    I'm a righthanded person. I've split my closet with a small drawer unit in the middle. The clothes on the left side I hang facing the right, and the clothes on the right face the left.
    When I was young, my mother would hang up our dresses and we had to wear the dress in the front and the fresh cleaned clothes went to the back. That helped to make us wear all that we had. Thanks for sharing.

    I think rolling your items works best when you are accessing them from vertical storage units, like shelves! However, for dressers and drawers, where I am accessing my items from a birds eye perspective, folding (Marie Kondo method) works best because you can see everything at once and I feel like more stuff fits! Both methods work well!

    Plastic shoe boxes with lids are terrific! To my eye, seeing the shoes in them is a cluttered look. I print out labels for the boxes with descriptors like “white trainers,” “navy satin heels,” “retro sandals,” etc. - whatever the words are in my head for that pair of shoes.
    I use a large font, then cut the paper so the label takes up the end of the box. I tape the label inside the box with clear packing tape. When complete, the shoe storage area has a consistent look that feels calmer to me. It could also be done with a profile photo of the shoe for those who prefer an image to words.
    The clear shoe boxes are so useful that I use them all over the house, labeling them in the same way.

    I like the flimsy hanging storage units for certain things. Even on the better quality ones I don’t like the droopiness of the “shelves,” so I customize them by cutting a piece of foam core board to fit in the bottom of each compartment. They’ve lasted for years, adding strength & structure to the storage. You could even double the boards if needed.

    My closet is very neat, organized and ready to wear. I ditched all the black velvet matching hangers! I hated the dust catching on them. I used to take a lint roller and clean over 250 hangers 4 times a year when I cleaned for each season. I found slimline gray rubber hangers and bought all I needed and extras for my closet. I did the same for my husbands clothes as well but I bought all black rubber slimline hangers for him. Now I do not need to lint roll them anymore.

    My husband cannot hang a shirt on those velvet hangers , can barely hang them on any hanger 😂 so I hang all his clothes on the clear plastic hangers they come on in the store, the kind with the twirly hanger hook at the top. I used to ask to keep them and most stores will let you or used to anyways. All his hangers are the same and look nice in the closet but I just didn't have to pay for them. You can also find them at thrift stores.

    Matching hangers made me feel so much better about my closet lol. We have the basic plastic ones from Walmart but they are great. Kids have white small ones, my fiancé has white full size and I have black full size. Easy peasy. Once the kids get into full size hangers, they will get black or white.

    This video reminded me of what my grandma used to do. Each hanger was a dress or outfit, that hanger had a little bag that hung on the neck for all the accessories for the look. Rarely did she wear the same accessory twice. It was for that dress/outfit! So when she died my sister and I gobbled up all the vintage costume jewelry, my cousins didn’t like most of it. Now that I am building a new house,with a giant closet, I am making space just for the vintage jewelry and other accessories.

    Rolling vs folding..... how do you roll without folding first? Would love for you to show that. Also, having a place for empty hangers is important. Whenever I take something off its hanger, the hanger goes to the "empty hanger" spot and then eventually to the laundry room when I get a chance. Thanks, and love the video!

    Huggable hangers are great! I also love the look of consistent hanger types throughout the closet. Daily life taught me I have a quirk that relates to hangers: I wear polo shirts to work and mornings are always rushed. I like to whisk that polo shirt off the hanger, which means I need a slippery hanger. Pricey varnished wooden ones work well for me, so I collected them over time at stores like Marshall’s for reasonable prices. Now most my closet is wooden hangers. For some things they’re *too* slippery, so I add adhesive-backed foam strips or rubber bands wrapped at the ends of the hangers for traction.

      If you don't have room for a dedicated rod for a few long items you can hang a hook on the wall of the closet or on the back of your bedroom door to hang a few items on hangers. OR you can fold the long item over a velvet hanger with a crossbar.

    I just store my shoes in the original boxes. I don't have too many, so it's easy to know which pair is which and I know what to go for. Didn't make sense to me to buy a shoe box when they came with one. I do however buy the same hangers. Switched to the huggable a few years ago and loved them. Lost in a house fire and went with plastic ones to replace and wish I had stuck with the huggable. But having the same hanger is a nice touch.

    MANY excellent ideas here like rolling vs folding (tees on a shelf). Having an "interloper" area is HUGE (thank you!), which totally eliminates several related maintenance categories you have to think about! Having a rod or spot to put things on that you intend to wear is also very helpful. Another idea I read about is to hang sweaters because when you put them in a drawer you forget them. I now neatly fold and drape them over the top of a hanger and slide the sleeves into the lower rung of the hanger and cover with plastic "shoulder" covers to keep dust off.

    I switched over to the huggable hangers 2 years ago and I love them. As I have some heavy winter coats, I kept a few heavy duty plastic hanger for the coat closet only. I have out of season clothes in a storage tote on my closet floor plus a bin of purses, along with my donation bag and laundry hamper. My shoes & boots (10 pairs total) are on a shoe shelf in my room. My main accessories are jewelry (I hang my necklaces on a small hook rack). I do hang all my clothes facing the same way and I hang about 85% of my clothes. My sweats, pj’s, & intimates are the only things folded. I also hang my clothes as soon as the dryer stops. I hate wrinkles and not only does putting them on hangers right away stop any wrinkles, it also stops the clothes from piling up everywhere. I recommend to everyone to try putting away the laundry as soon as the dryer stops for 1-2 weeks and just see what a huge difference it makes!! (You’ll thank me later 😉) I’ve used the backwards hanger trick on a seasonal basis and found that it really helps me realize what I do not wear. I donated a ton of winter clothing when I switched over to my summer wear. Its a continual process on reducing the number of clothing items I have but I am striving to keep only the items I love, feel comfortable in and those that fit me right now.

    Kay, love your videos and suggestions, plus Clover is super cute.
    I love the hanging shoe shelves from Ikea for storing my sweaters. I roll them and one sweater is put into each shoe cubby, so when I pull a sweater out, it does not pull any other sweater out with it. The caddies are long, so you get a lot of space, but can be cut down if you have less hanging space (they are pretty inexpensive, and they are fabric). I am a very visual organizer, so keeping sweaters in drawers does not work for me, and hanging draped over the hanger takes up too much valuable rod space. Try it, you may find your aversion to hanging shelves is changed simply by changing how you use them.

    Funny story..I love organization & I pride myself on my organized closets especially. I follow most of the tips you recommended because I've learned a lot of these excellent tips over the years, but the one about, "If you're right handed the clothes should face right & if your left handed they should face left" threw me for a long minute. I had to really think about this, because my clothes are technically backwards according to this tip, which seemed really odd to me. I also distinctly remembered helping my mom with her closet (she's right handed) & chastising her because her "clothes faced the wrong way!!" Then I remembered having the exact same conversation with my right-handed husband multiple times. Thankfully, he now hangs everything the direction I prefer, but because I'm the organized one, therefore of course I'm right, right?! but now you have me questioning that because of course you're the expert. So, I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I could be so off/backwards on this point??..and then it hit me!! 💥While I do almost everything right handed & I consider myself right handed, I am a tiny bit ambidextrous. Not fully, like my cousin who can use both hands to do everything equally well, but I do quite a few things left handed, like cartwheels (when I was a kid), I prefer to shoot skeet left handed, I left hand mouse when using the computer & turns out, I pull clothes out of my closet with my left hand!!😳🤣 So. I learned something new about myself today & had to call & apologize to my mother.

      I also am right handed, but do a lot of things the way a left hander would do. By the "rules" I hang things up wrong, but it works for me. Where it really shows I go against the norm is when I try something on in a store, like a jacket, when I put it back on the rack it is going the wrong way😄

    • @hlu777
      @hlu777 3 года назад +2

      @@Kay-fv7cw Yes! So sad that that's completely true. The ambidextrous cousin I referred to in my op was born in 1971. He was forced to write right-handed in school in the 70's & even the 80's, because teachers would tell him it was "evil to write with your left hand". Even more disturbing, teachers told him he was an "evil demonic kid" just because he wanted to write left-handed and because when one had got tired he'd switch to the other hand. I thought that was so cool! & even at 6 y.o. when he told me these horrible things, I remember thinking what utter bs that was. I still can't believe anyone would ever say that to a child, ever! but it especially blows my mind that it still happened in my lifetime. Hope they didn't say those hideous things to the person you know.

    Hello from Vancouver, BC, Canada! I now have a name for the clothes that sleep with me on the other side of the bed....interlopers!🤣 I've been binge watching your videos. On another video you suggested setting aside a portion of the closet for the interlopers. I actually jumped off the couch and did just that. What a game changer! I also have an Ikea hook that could become my valet, if I can get my head together to figure out what I'd like to wear the next day. :) Really enjoying your videos. You're inspiring me to value my home.

    Left handed and all of my clothes face left due to my own OCD thing. And I had to move everything off of the floor for air flow, otherwise we have mold in the closet. It is a southern problem. Hangers for almost everything. I do not fold. When I pack for a trip I put each outfit rolled in a small bag to make getting dressed easier. :-)

      So, I’m in the south too and there’s a product you can buy specifically designed to pull moisture out of small spaces like closets. If I recall, this packet or jar of dehumidifier looks like crystals and you won’t even believe how much water it collects (you replace it periodically). Hope that helps.

    I changed all my hangers, thanks to you and it looks so much nicer. I do however still have all my shoes in their original boxes. I know exactly what every box is, because most have a small picture on them showing the shoe style. I also group them by types, such as heels, flats, boots, sandals etc. I really don't like the look of the clear plastic shoe boxes, but I do have a few clear acrylic pull out drawer shoe boxes and 2 fabric pull down front door boxes, both from the container store.
    I'm left handed, but I hang the reverse of what you said because I am ambidextrous.

    Love love love this video, some great tips. Would like to see more like this, for what not to do when you organize dishes, pantry, linen/utility closet, under the kitchen sink, bathroom cupboards or lack thereof...I'm a folder/ball it up/stuff it in whatever drawer or flimsy folding fabric shelf is available/leave it with the rest of the clean clothes in the laundry basket and grab as needed 🤭

    I personally find for me, I have 2 sizes of hangers, the reason for this is I use fatter hangers for my pants so that the hangers don't bend and eventually break, but this is often not necessary for my shirts so I use regular size hangers for them. I don't wear sweaters so that would be the only time a fatter hanger would be helpful with a shirt. I separate my clothes by what they are, pants, shirts, tanks, and so forth, then I color code each section which then each section is separated and labeled. I use a freestanding shelf to organize my extra medical supplies that are stored in my closet since I only own 3 pairs of shoes and I do not wear alot of accessories. I have a hook in the door about midway since I am in a wheelchair. This gives me easy access each morning to getting dressed. My caregiver helps me at night with choosing the following days clothes, and putting up everything when it is washed.

      Same problem. What worked for me was to use suction bags, and store out of season clothes under the bed. Yes, it's a pain to have to get everything out and steam each season, but it also stopped me from over buying clothes. I now have a capsule wardrobe and wear all my clothes. Either this or steal closet space from another room or if you have a basement, attic or storage room. Just be mindful of the temperature of wherever you are storing items, especially leather shoes, bags, etc.

    • @lynnetrue4103
      @lynnetrue4103 3 года назад +1

      Same here. I made use of all the space from the wood shelf that goes from side to side above my closet rod to the ceiling and put premade narrow shelves on each side to store purses and fabric boxes stacked on top each other in the middle to store out of season clothes. I removed the one long hanging rod and because I have room on each side I hung a rod on top for tops one halfway down for pants folded over hangers. On the other side I hung a high rod for jackets and shirts and under that I fit a store bought shelf for shoes. If you don't have the room on the sides to do the high low rods hang all your shorter items on one side of the rod so you can fit a small storage unit under the short items on the floor. Hope that makes sense.

      @lynnetrue4103 3 года назад +1

      @@MyCrownstar love your space bag idea. I save myself the steaming step by dampening a couple cotton flour sack dish towels and throw them in the dryer on low with the items that need dewrinkling. You don't need to leave the items in till the towels are dry just run awhile and then take each item out one at a time and keep the dryer running for the other items while you hang each item on a hanger. The dampness takes out the wrinkles in one fell swoop. Hope it works for you

    One thing I did I stead of turning hangers was just wear all my clothes without doing laundry and see how long I can go before I run out of options I like/need. I end up rewashing pants and undergarments of course, but the last shirts and dresses told me a lot about either my taste or the season/weather

    I have a t-shirt shelf and for that, I fold. I feel like it looks neater, and I've maintained it for quite some time now. I have some small containers for like...tank tops or camis, and again I fold those, but I "file" them Marie Kongo style. Now outside of the closet, my jammies are in an old dresser and those I roll! Much easier to see in the weird, deep drawers, I don't have to dig, and I can see everything when I open the drawer!

    I have only a tiny dresser for underwear. The top drawer is miscellaneous tech things but then it's socks, underpants and bras. I hang everything else. I have a rod, not a double rod and everything but coats are in the closet, even my jewelry and my workout equipment (weights, bands, exercise balls. Not the treadmill.) My shoes are in boxes on the shelf. My jewelry is in a hanging jewelry organizer. I use three different hangers because it works best. All my tops, and dresses are on while hangers with grips on the shoulder area. My skirts and pants are on clip style hangers and are thick metal and wood. I refuse to replace them. Nothing works better. The white plastic versions all broke. I store my clothes drying rack, iron and ironing board in the closet. My closet is super colorful as I wear the rainbow of SOLID colors. I own nothing with a pattern other than a single summer dress that is great when it's hot. When it wears out, no more patterns. I don't like patterns much.

    I store my shoes in clear plastic boxes as well, but when I took a pair of heels to have them retipped, the repair man said that storing them in closed boxes shortens the life of the glue that is used on the soles/heel tips. Not sure if that is true, but I now have open clear boxes on a shoe rack.
    Oh, and I’m a Kondo-style folder. 😂

    I am a folder, possibly partly from having worked in clothing retail for a bit and partly from Mari Kondo. Definitely agree though that it's about what works for you - whatever doesn't isn't going to give you that ‘feel’ of being in a space you can move through and use easily.

    You are so right about the hangers! The dry cleaners hangers are immediately replaced with the huggable hangers when brought home from the cleaners. I also remove empty hangers from the closets and hang them in the laundry area. My husband and I place our dirty clothes and towels in the hampers after use. There are not any piles of dirty laundry in our bedroom, bathroom nor closets.

    Thanks Kay! i would like to take a nap too Clover!! I have found that I while I also use the same hangers you do, I like one color for my dresses which are on one side of my closet, another color for my tops and jackets, and another for my pants. Because then I can see at a glance just how many of those things I have, and if I put them back in the wrong place (heaven forbid!), I can easily see that and right that wrong. As for the interlopers, I turn those inside out so that I don't forget they are interlopers. I've made the mistake of just hanging them back otherwise. Love the valet hook idea! I also bought TCS clear plastic drawer kind shoe boxes so that I can stack and not have to take a lid off. But I put them on the floor. I have photographed them and put them on the front so I can see them much easier. I used to do this even when I kept shoes in the regular boxes. Oh...and I am a folder.
