That dam as you mentioned it, is one of the many constructions of the Dutch Delta-werken project. It's called "Oosterscheldekering", is 9 km long and has some 64 sluice-gate-doors that can be closed in case of high sea levels during a storm. Check it out if you're interested.

Hate it because we fought for 1000 years against flooding and lost more people to flooding than wars in that period (including by the way the longest war of independence in history).
