I have Iron Maiden music, but only have one good Maiden “story.” In the mid-1990s we had Xmas Gift Exchange at work & my Secret Santa got me the CD Stone Free (multi-artist tribute to Jimi Hendrix), but that cost more than the $10 we were supposed to spend (plus he bought it at the mall, so paid list price). As a thank you I recorded 2 VHS video tapes for him. One was compilation of TV appearances by different artists. The other was the 1983 MTV Heavy Metal Concert w/ Iron Maiden (w/ Paul Dianno), Black Sabbath (w/ Ian Gillan), Ratt, and Dio. He & his friend just stood there wide-eyed. Was afraid maybe they thought Ratt wasn’t heavy enough, since they already busted my balls for including Winger on the other tape. Instead they said they literally were talking about that concert a week earlier and lamenting that neither one recorded it, so after that long would probably NEVER see it again. Yet here I was as Santa dropping it into their laps! Said he didn’t mind AT ALL paying list for my CD. 🎅

I think people need to get out of the habit of saying if a bands albums are good or bad. I think musical taste is a very personal and subjective thing. It is perfectly reasonable to suggest that people can grow out of liking a band or the direction in which a band is progressing musically, while others can grow to like a band based solely on recent material and not really get into the earlier albums. I personally have never understood why everyone raves about Seventh Son. In my opinion it has a string opening and lulls you into thinking that you are getting a concept album. But the concept in this album is so loosely stitched together and seems so out of order that it may not even be a concept album at all. “Can I play with madness is one if the most ‘unmetal’ radio-bait songs they’ve ever recorded. Surely this song about a profit who fortells the coming of the chosen one should have come first on the album, but it is so flacid and lacking in guitar solos that it would have left the album dead in the water had it been an opening track. “Evil that men do” seems to have no act in the concept. Seventh son has the two minute prog rock that I’m sure many records were scratched and cassette tapes were streched by those who tried to skip some of the meaningless repetitiveness. Then the last two songs again don’t give the concept any closure and have so many time signature and key changes that one could be forgiven for thinking Maiden were trying to rival the Bside of Abbey Road by the beatles, by just stitching together a load of unrelated snippets of verses, choruses and solos. Don’t get me wrong I listen to the album and I enjoy it. But I don’t think it’s the masterpiece so many people make it out to be. However, thats just my opinion. Considering No Prayer for the Dying album, when I first bought this album I was actually hoping it wouldnt be like seventh son. It wasn’t and I loved it. Ten songs that are completely unrelated but which give you balls to the wall HEAVY metal with solos that make sense and are fun to try and replicate. The only song i really didnt like was the title track. In fact, I disliked it so much that I timed how long I needed to fast forward the cassette for to be able to skip it. I HATED the Xfactor. So much in fact that I returned the CD to HMV and got my money back. I also really like the newer maiden material, but I can fully see why some find it hard work and overly progressive. I agree that the live album playthrough for A matter of life and death was a massive mistake. I thought the album was amazing. I went to that gig and it seemed more like a recital than a rock concert. The crowd was flat and gave the courtesy applause after every song, but nobody was really enjoying themselves. It actually turned me off of Maiden and I missed the release of Final Frontier and Book of Souls until I was given the latter as a Christmas present. I loved it. Bought final frontier and loved that too. Then felt gutted that I had allowed my one bad experience and knee jerk reaction to prevent me from seeing the live show for these albums. I am Now a fully committed Maiden fan again. Like I said, i think it’s a personal thing and it’s perfectly okay for people to fall in or out of enjoying a bands material. Essay over.

Wow! GREAT Essay! First of all, you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT... I should have named my episode something else or less negative... I myself correct people when they say "that song sucks, or that band sucks" when In fact they should be saying "That song is your least favorite, and that band is your least favorite..." Bad part on me there! As for 7th Son, I like it (as you can state by now) but I did not always like it... took me a while to get into it... NPFTD for me is where it falls flat... song wise... The rest I've explained myself in this episode, but I do appreciate someone defending or explaining themselves in the proper way which you did! Great read! Loved reading it! Brave New World was the last classic album. What happened to Maiden through the 90's was that Steve had ran out of ideas, Adrian leaves, then Martain retires, and Bruce leaves as well.
Loosing 2 of your main song writers leave and the primary song writer has no new ideas, and the guiding force who shaped their sound is also gone, this was a respire for disaster.

I agree most are good/great until we see the tour and after it’s disposable. Like another listener mentioned they are not much different to their peers. Metallica? Crue?Kiss? The up to Seventh Son albums were all solid front to end with a number of songs that rose above the average excellence. Up through Dance of Death I've felt they had the songs that rose above but the average was much lower. Since then they basically seem to just run together without the high peaks of the past. My preference in music has changed without a doubt but I can still listen to the first 8 albums real easy. I think a lot of it is that Iron Maiden was doing stuff no one has done(or they were the first I've noticed), now it's a lot of 'been there, done that'.

  • @astralcrab

Being a fan for 32 years now has given me time to develop ideas and what i can say now is that. Martin birtch was a key piece in the classic-Maiden era that ends with SSOASS, not underestimating Derek Riggs! not music but his paintings were awesome for the Maiden world that they built for us.
Maiden should have used other classic-rock sounding -Bob Ezrin for example- producers who would have stand up to Steve harris and constrain his ideas of long songs, and most of all, give them a CLEAR sound that have lacked.
Musically the X Factor was great, deep but the mix is horrible, guitars are too weak in comparison to drums.
Most of Kevin Shirley's albums sound "muddy" for my taste.
Virtual XI has good, straighforward songs and sound, but suffers from too much repetition.
Every album has it's bad things!

Hell on Earth from Senjutsu was epic live, not Rime of the ancient mariner, but had that song been released in the 80's, people would love it I think. Book of Souls has good songs, but it's just too much, too long and not memorable. Final Frontier is a "meh" from me. The X factor is very underrated for sure. I dare say that The edge of darkness is better than any song they wrote after. Virtual XI was weaker. But I really can't get into any album since Bruce returned. I think their sound got softer albeit more epic. Bruce's singing couldn't keep up either, then the cancer made things worse. He is still a good singer, but sadly a shadow of his former glory.
I feel they simply ran out of ideas at some point, like most other classic metal bands.

However, much of their later period, more progressive sounding pieces fall very short for me, as I find them very boring, predictable and just not very musically exciting. That's just my opinion, of course! I think they had two apexes. Ther first being the killers/maiden japan period, and then, of course the powerslave, 1985 tour, which yielded Live After Death. 5 star albums to one or two stars for me, really. Ha ha you give them even more credit than I do. I love everything up to Seventh Son. I think Seventh Son might even be my favorite album. Infinite Dreams is my favorite Maiden song for sure. And I wish they would have stayed in that direction as far as writing goes.
After Seventh Son they were no longer interesting to me. I think my musical tastes were probably changing at the time. I was discovering so many great things musically that their 3 listenable songs per album just wasn't going to cut it for me.
A band that has taken the essence of what was great about Maiden and modernized it is Avenged Sevenfold. If Maiden would have consistently progressed to be a modern band, that is what they should sound like. But they just sound outdated to me.

Brave New World was a decent album but every other release can not reach the hight's of the first eight Maiden recordings. Senjutsu is by far the waekest. Getting rid of Derek Riggs was also a mistake because Eddie is an important part of Maiden, I'd say he's 50% of their success. People bought Maiden records just because of the excellent album covers. At A Matter Of Life And Death, Eddie can only be seen in the background. I wonder what that's all about? Ed must be recognizable over a large area.

Too simplistic mate, you can't base 2 eras on the age of the people buying the albums. Guys who were 17 or 18 in 1979 were in there 20s in the 80s, hardly pimply youths.

Can't agree with A Matter of Life and Death...loved it. Book of Souls...amazing and Senjutsu can give any pre 88 album a run for it's money. Think of these songs from the earlier albums that are good but not great...Gangland, Innocent Exile, Prodigal Son, Invaders, To Tame a Land, Sun and Steel, Quest for Fire, Strange World, The Duellists, The Prophecy, Heaven Can Wait, Sea of Madness, The Clairvoyant, ..all pre 88 and none as good as If Eternity Could Fail, Speed of Light, The Red and the Black, Empire of the Clouds, The Writing on the Wall, Hell on Earth, El Dorado, ...etc every album has some songs better than others....I suppose a measure of an album are songs you would skip...Senjutsu, BofS and AMOLAD for me...none, and I bought Killers as a 10 year old when it was released and love the old stuff.

To asnwer the question.. NOPE.. Been a Maiden fan since the mid 80's My first album I ever bought with my own money was NOTB. I was like 11-12 at the time. I think a lot of people in my age group can't accept that bands change. They're artists, why on earth would people expect a band as great as Maiden to keep putting out the same sounding stuff evey album. I remember when SIT came out and die hard fans hated it, now of course they love it same w/ 7th because it's all considered part of that "classic" Maiden sound, which is crap, cause ST and Killers of course is way different than the other Maiden albums, SIT it is completely different from any of the previous 5 albums and 7th is different as well. So we could already see they were growing, stretching and trying different things along the way.i will say this w/ Bruce on vocals No Prayer is my least favorite. Even back then and now it's hard for me to really get into. I thought Fear was a way better album and of course completely different sound than the others, so again they were already evolving and trying different things along the way. When Brave came out of course I was stoked and I loved it, cause it wasn't classic sounding Maiden, but theres just something about Bruce and Adrian being in that band. i thought Dance of Death was a good album, some really good songs on that one too. When Life and Death came out I thought that was their best album since SIT personally. And again musically evolving from the other albums. Final frontier for me is my least favorite post Brave (reunion) album. I still have a hard time sitting down and listening to it all the way through. the last two I thought were solid. People need to realize that these bands that stick around for 40-50 years aren't gonna be sounding, writing or playing the same way they did when they were young. People change, bands change, the music scene changes, technology and they way they record now has changed, everything has changed so why wouldn't they music? And let's be real.. the worst three albums by Maiden to me are still far better than what most metal albums are today.. But again this is all my personal opinion. and here's my opinion as well..And here's my honest gonna get crap for sharing opinion.. I never really cared for 7th son. Just never really did anything for me. I thought it was over produced at the time, to shiny and none of the songs really grabbed me. Here's my complete list by favorites. I listed it by most played, most songs on each that I really like and if I can connect to it.
    1. Piece of Mind
    2. Somewhere in Time
    3. # of the beast
    4. Killers
    5. Matter of Life & Death

    7. S.T.
    8. Dance of Death

    10. Powerslave
    11. Senjutsu
    12. Book Of Souls
    13. Virtual XI
    14. 7th Son

I seem to have gotten into Maiden about the same time you did... i was 10 in 1982 when I got TNOTB... :) As for 7th Son, ya it took me a long while to get into that one at the time.. Iron Maiden albums are all really patchy since Seventh Son. That's the last album where every song is at least good. Even the really deep cuts that never got played live. Since then the albums have all been a really mixed bag.

'No Prayer for the Dying' is one of my all time favorite Maiden albums and it definitely doesn't suck. Songs like 'Tailgunner' and 'Run Silent Run Deep' are more than solid, while the title track is a sheer masterpiece. From a musical, compositional and lyrical standpoint the title track is as great as anything this band has ever released (Steve Harris as a songwriting genius). Furthermore, the title track of their next album (Fear of the Dark) is also brilliant. Just because their music stopped being as 'heavy' as it used to be, it doesn't mean that it was no longer good. Was there a change in sound after Seventh Son? Yes there was, and fans usually don't like the change, I can understand that. But change is not a criteria for anything, whether good or bad. You either accept it or you don't...(by the way, for me personally, everything that came after the Fear of the Dark album is something I can happily live without)
