They have played an integral part of my soundtrack growing up as with a lot of people.
Thanks to the interview Phil I’ve given the album a listen on line and thought it sounds really fantastic.

I feel that with "=1", Deep Purple have returned to their trademark heaviness, their riffing and constant interaction between guitar and organ that were missing like 30 years now. Simon & Don are obviously working a lot better together than did Steve & Don. I would go as far and say its their best since last Ritchie's "The Battle Rages On", perhaps even more. People are still complaining about Steve Morse, but he was never really able to play and collaborate with Don as Simon does deliciously here. This one here is full of memorable songs already. I really suggest people to unwax their ears and replay their older stuff, this is heavy / rock as DP never played in decades. What an album to start their MK IX era! Thank you wholeheartedly for the sweet review. Cheers!

The interplay with Morse and Lord and Airey is on full display on Purpendicular/Bananas/Rapture of the Deep/ What If/ - just listen to Nothing At All from Whoosh - it’s amazing

    • @kasper3545
      @kasper3545 2 месяца назад

Totally agree, the rapport between Don and Simon is a lot better. What is more important is that the riffs are now much more Deep Purplish, and this get Paicy going a lot more than Steve's backward grooving riffs.

I totally disagree. The Steve Morse years are amazing!!! (28 yrs.) He only left to take care of his late wife who had cancer. A stand up and great person! I hope he returns to Purple in the not so distant future!

    • @teec3557
      @teec3557 2 месяца назад

Agree. Morse was a difference maker for Purple saving a band that was about to fall off a cliff
He brought musicality and expert musicianship to the band that gave them a fresh evolved sound.
If I want a band that sounds like the seventies I’ll listen to the 70s not a band or album that is attempting to sound like the seventies.
=1 cannot hold up to the 70s and Ezrin’s production again is “small”. He has gutted the growling ever present Hammond sound from the band that we saw with Lord and Airey with his first couple of albums. Hell the 1st 3 songs have a mood solo - that isn’t 70s Purple

Hi Phil. You feel and think the same as me about this album. Even your favourite track is the same as mine!! Now You Are Talking is incredible, just Speed King + Highway Star + Bananas all into one. I found the instrumental part to be quite similar to Police's Demolition Man. And Big Ian scream on the minute mark is so imperfect as well as funny... probably happened on the fly. Thanks to Mr Ezrin for leaving it as it was. Deep Purple gave us such joy and hapiness at this point in their life... So much grateful I feel, so happy, and there are not many reasons to be happy in today's world. Such a joy to feel that way and share it to you and your community.

All these years of listening and living Deep Purple I realize that no Ian Gillan no Deep Purple. He is the voice of DP. Without him there will never be Deep Purple we know. His trademark voice is making Deep Purple easily recognizable. You immediately know it’s Purple due of his vocals. Ritchie left in ‘93, Jon in ‘01, many lineup changes… It’s still sound like Deep Purple. Ian Gillan with his arrival is shaped a sound the band. And of course Ian Paice and Roger Glover another key figures of Deep Purple sound. Great album 💿

Totally agree Phil, with Sharp Shooter. Fantastic riff. Real In Rock sound. Superb stuff. And as you say, Paice is on fire throughout. Great to hear him play with real enthusiasm, again.
McBride is superb. What a player! He and Airey are really locked in, and their solos are inspired.
Personally, my only criticism is Gillans vocals and melodies. I know it sounds harsh, but I feel these songs are so good, that they deserve a......fresher rock vocalist singing on these tracks, with better melodies. I don't think Ezrin has helped Gillan by making his vocals so dry and upfront in the mix.
Still got to give it another listen, as I didn't really take-in Glovers contribution to the album. But overall it's certainly a thumbs up from me. The riffs are back and they sound inspired. Great stuff.

Its truly excellent and the rockiest for years. Simon McBride has injected a new lease of life into the band. And as others have said he works so well with Don Airey. Gillan is in great voice and Paicey is bloody excellent along with Roger hollding it all down. My boxset surprisingly arrived a day early on the Thursday and i did wonder what it was in the cardboard box. Now into my 7th to 8th listen and its gets better every time and got so many great songs i cant give comment on favourites yet. Definitely one of the albums of the year. Vinyl sounds excellent and great pressings too. Love the live 10" albums of live tracks. All round a brilliant box set .. just get it! Long live Deep Purple 🎸🥁🎤

Great review Phil! Really loved 'Woosh' and thought if that was to be their last album, Purple would go out on an absolute high. However, the guys managed to top that with =1. I just cannot stop playing the new album. Simon is a massive massive player - really fit like a glove, and just like you said, he somehow morphs Ritchie and Steve, yet brings in lots of his own sound. The playing is exceptional throughout. Usually i'm a bit careful with all the hype that typically comes along with new releases of seasoned bands. And for the most part i fare very well with that attitude. And with their last abysmal album i already wrote Deep Purple off. But to my honest surprise, they kinda convinced me otherwise. The new album is great. It's powerful, it's varied, very well produced and new guitarist Simon McBride is a breath of fresh air. It maybe is a couple of minutes too long, but that's just whining at a high level. Good Job Deep Purple! 8/10

Love your thoughts Phil! I have to agree - the album is stunning. I think it's the best thing since Perfect Strangers (though I really enjoy Whoosh). Now You're Talking, Pictures Of You and I Will Catch You are my favourites that I keep going back to - but I played the album through four times as soon as I got the packaging open - this is an absolute classic. Thanks for your review. I got the limited edition purple vinyl version of the album but also listened to it on RUclips a couple times. Love it. Now You’re Talkin’ is probably my favorite song also. Reminds me of the wildness of the Gillan band. A Bit on The Side, Sharp Shooter, I’m Saying Nothin’, Pictures of You, and Bleeding Obvious are also favorites. Overall, I think it’s very addictive listening and I find something memorable and meaningful in all 13 songs. Lots of deep grooves and guitar firepower. Love Paice’s performance on these tracks and I think McBride has rejuvenated them. This one’s gonna have real staying power for me and could end up ranking quite high in their discography.

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough review of the new DP physical product(s) and the music found within. I have been listening to the new 50th Anniversary Edition of Machine Head and its 1974 Quad Mix so that was the most recent DP that I still had ringing in my ears so that was my "baseline" when I got around to listening to '= 1" tonight. All I can say is "WOW". I haven't enjoyed listening to an album clear through as much as this new release in YEARS! I found myself wishing that there were "hidden" extended versions of damn near all of the songs found on the first 2/3 of the CD! So my only suggestion would be to release a deluxe edition with extended versions and for a stand alone High Rez/ATMOS Blu-ray release. This album is a MONSTER, a playful, swinging monster but a monster nonetheless.

Hi Phil. Have been looking forward to this review, and thank you. Whoosh is a great album and almost a celebration of the band's less heavy tendencies. =1 sounds like a reaffirmation of how heavy Purple can be. The live tracks they've premiered sound fab on the various videos on here. (Surprised you can't order box-sets according to your shirt-size! I'm X-L now, so can order without worry.😄)
Purple's full hiatus years, '77 - '83, didn't prepare anyone for today. Ian Paice was still young but semi-retired between PAL and Whitesnake. Now he's one of the busiest musicians going, with Purple! I remember going for a long walk in Dorset in '79, the year Simon McBride was born and Gary Moore was full-time with Lizzy, and wondering if DP Mk.2 would ever reform, and what new song titles they might come up with. Now they're the UK's biggest working band. Incredible.

DP bang on form on the new album, i bought the purple vinyl edition, very good sound, excellent pressing no flaws. McBride is the perfect choice for guitarist, amazing skill and fits in with the band perfectly. I would miss Ian Gillan, love his amusing lyrics and still sounding great as always. Brilliant album highly recommended! I didn' t get the box set with the garter, toothpicks, coasters, place mats and tee shirt, the tee would probably have ended up as my wife's nighty anyway. (-:

This album is still too new for me to know where I’d slot it in amongst a DP discography ranking but I must say I’m very, VERY impressed with it.
However, I’d like to share a few things I’ve noticed. Firstly, Simon McBride. Talk about a round peg made for a round hole. He has fitted in SEAMLESSLY and he’s bought back a much heavier sound to Purple that has been missing for a while, (not bad for a guy who wasn’t even born during Purple’s initial lifespan).
In turn, this has brought out a masterclass vocal performance from Ian Gillan, who for the last few albums, seems to have been content to settle into the older statesman of Rock role, rarely pushing his voice to the levels we used to know him for and on =1 he seems to be a lot edgier and getting that heavier sound that I feel I heard last on The Battle Rages On.
Don Airey has at last come out of Jon Lord’s shadow and we get a lot more synth sounds and not as much Hammond organ. If you look back at Airey’s career from Cozy Powell’s Hammer, through Rainbow, Ozzy and Whitesnake, it is clear he has always favoured the synths and this gives him a more natural sound rather than trying to get him to play Hammond solo’s, (which no one can do like Jon Lord anyway).
This is one of the most complete Deep Purple albums for some time. It brings together so many elements that made up what Deep Purple were brilliant for and why we love them so much. Whilst I doubt it will ever be compared favourably to In Rock, Machine Head or Burn, it is certainly going to become a favourite.

Phil, thank you so much for this very solid track by track interview. I listened to the singles and I had no doubt that the rest of the album would be great. I purchased it on vinyl at $44 USD which, GOOD GOD, I find quite pricey. There were only a few copies at my local record store which were on clear vinyl. Now that I know a DVD was included, I'll need to purchase the CD. I was a little upset by the lack of portraiture on this album but feel the minimalist artwork symbolizes maturity and sophistication of what this band has become which I really love. Unlike you, I was not a big fan of the Steve Morse era, so this record has been a long time coming for me. I think Simon McBride is one of the most intelligent additions to the band. He's young, and I believe he's the key to keeping this band fresh and relevant. He's not only brought his own style to the music but he's helping the band maintain their legacy. I'm happy to see that this record is receiving so many positive reviews.

    Wonderful revue.
I totally agree it is a genuine follow on from Steve Morse and not, as so many are saying, a return to the banjo player’s style.
    This is simply DeepPurple.
I thought the vocal part of “Bleeding Obvious” after the proggy musical bit, sounded like the 60’s and Episode six.
I also agree it is just amazing and wonderful that in 2024, we get a new DP album.

This is an amazing album. I am blown away how well Simon fits in. Great songwriting and very innovative. There’s one song (forgot title) that sounds like a reincarnation of Rosa’s Cantina from Purpendicular. But it’s more of a power metal version rather than Texas blues.

Enjoyable video, nice to see all the stuff in the big boxset, I only got the deluxe CD myself. They really should offer sizes on t-shirts with these things, so many must just go to waste and never be worn as they won't fit the owner. I've had the DVD on, and it is an enjoyable hours viewing, though thought they could have maybe added a few extra promo videos or interviews, as obviously there is more than enough space to do so on a DVD. First couple of listens of the album are very favourable, is a good time to be a fan of Purple, roll on the UK tour later in the year.

Purple is supposed to play 90 minutes away from me in Atlantic City here in the US at the end of August. The current Yes lineup is opening. I have every intention of going. I have put off seeing too many artists and ended up regretting it many times. I will definitely play =1 a few times between now and then.
Very cool that Never Before was your introduction. I love that song. I remember getting a used copy of Machine Head as a kid and my dad getting a kick out of hearing that song again for the first time in years when I played it. (Weirdly, this itself was an event I am recalling 20 years later.)

I'd like to hear this new line-up do 'Jack Ruby', 'Ted the Mechanic' and 'Watching the Sky' from Morse era, as I think Simon would bring them a few steps closer to mainstream DP, whilst letting them off the leash!
    Nice review!

I feel Simon almost took inspiration from Tommy Bolin and the MkIV Era of Purple on some of these tracks and riffs, especially that funk section in Track 5. It was TREMENDOUS to hear the fresh air being breathed back into this band. Ian Paice's drumming definitely echoed his 1974-1976 style a lot, and I very much enjoyed it. Hope this lineup goes on for a long while.

Good you've mentioned that the vinyl is a 45 rpm, so I'll purchase the CD+DVD version of the album despite the sound.
I think the album is a bit "back to the 70's" after Whoosh! without being a copy of the old DP.

There has been suggestions that this album harks back to the band's prime time early 70's period. The song titles even suggest this e.g. Portable Door = Knocking At Your Back Door (okay that is '84), Lazy Sod = Lazy, Pictures Of You = Pictures of Home and Money To Burn = Burn. Okay this is a bit of a stretch but some of the riffs sound familiar. The band have produced an album that is sharp, to the point, energised with less 'progressive tendencies of say Purpendicular and Now What?! although the final track Bleeding Obvious is multifaceted. Simon McBride is a more 'straight ahead' player than Morse and is reflected in the more concise song structure. Reinvigorated and re-energised this is a powerful album that is however sympathetic to Gillan's more restrained vocal delivery. For me Ian Paice is the star turn with his best drumming performance in a long time. Just listen to A Bit On The Side and Now You're Talkin' (my personal favourite). Totally agree with Phil for those stating 'no Blackmore no Deep Purple' are missing, in my estimation, the band's most creative period under Morse in terms of song structure arrangements. Let's be honest the musicianship within this band has always been of the very highest order whoever the members are.

Hi Phil - may I add a couple of comments? (1) The particular guitar chord with a pedal effect in Bleeding Obvious somewhat reminds me of Tommy Bolin. (2) As with Whoosh, the band is showing songwriting mastery with creative and melodic middle 8's throughout. (3) Don Airey has been proving album after album, what an outstanding addition to the band he is. Ok, Deep Purple is my all time favourite band - not only because of its 'classic' material, but also because it has remained relevant with constantly good albums, which sometimes (as if this one) are exceptional. Despite loving the 70's stuff (obviously), I wouldn't mind a Deep Purple gig with material exclusively post 1996. So much output of the highest calibre from these guys over the past decades.

Brilliant album... just a couple of 'boogie-woogie' numbers of the kind Pete Pardo doesn't much like; I'd include Now You're Talking among those. Sorry Phil, I can't agree with you that this is a better opener than Show Me, which, IMO, is a perfect number one track.

Just reading these comments about DP being heavier and reverting back to yesteryear for their sound. I challenge anyone to gear up their headphones: listen to this album then listen to songs specifically from Bananas (a less respected album by many): Sun Goes Diwn/Silver Tongue/ Pictures of Innocence/ I’ve Got Your Number/ walk On/ Bananas and tell me that’s not DP. Some of those songs simply blow away what is on this album plus the organ sounds so much better achieving a heavier sound plus the interplay and soloing with Morse and Airey is very good (even gets better on Rapture of the Deep)
For all his criticism Bradford gets to me he created a better sound for DP (though the mix on Rapture of the Deep was off) by creating a more powerful organ sound and creating space between the instruments. In addition, he really emphasized the soloing of DP and longer more relaxed songs. Ezrin has turned purple into a 3-4 minute song band plus his production or mixing can be muffled or condensed.

Just have to say I enjoy your podcast and your love of music esp your love of Deep Purple. I enjoy all aspects of DP. I love Come Taste the Band. Burn blew me away. Perfect Strangers as an album thoroughly disappointed me. Purpendicular for me became a top 5 purple album. Stormbringer is still an oddity but sometimes I really enjoy if I’m in the right mood. This new one has some good moments but sadly I do think Gillan is fading and despite what people say it doesn’t sound anything like In Rock. Unfortunately Ezrin and Airey gutted the power of Jon Lord’s organ😳
