It's an interesting question. I don't think they all suck, but I also think they don't all have to be over an hour. I can see preferring the older albums for the conciseness. There is a tendency to romanticize the older stuff that I don't agree with. For instance, most people think Powerslave is flawless but I think it is pretty spotty. Great video, Keith!

    • @AttackFromDownunda
      @AttackFromDownunda  Месяц назад +2

I was just thinking how some bands we give a pass for doing long songs and others we don't.
I think at a younger age listening to those classic albums from Maiden we found our sweet spot.
Usually about 8-9 songs with a tight 40 -50 minute length.
Now they have gone quite prog. and drag out these songs. We are the C.D generations so we need
more music to fill out a C.D.
      Thanks for watching Scott!.

I first got into maiden in 82. I'd say their peak was between 82 and 88. I was a massive fan and still play the old stuff. But every album since has disappointed me.maybe it's the songwriting or maybe it's that Bruce's voice has changed a great deal . But for me they've never matched songs like NOTB, Trooper, hallowed, evil that men do etc..

As an Aussie feller born in 1968 I bought "Killers" in 1981 on cassette because it has the version of Skyhooks "Women in Uniform" which made the album unique to Australia. Then bought "The Number Of The Beast" in 1982 with it's killer fast and furious pacing and their two great songs "Run to the Hills" and "The Number of the Beast". Then got "Piece of Mind" and loved it to as it expanded their sound and well read subject matter but still kept the songs to the point. I then got "Powerslave" which was a letdown and a chore, long songs, instrumental, boring subject matter about fencing...but two great lead tracks. Then "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son". The thin sound and synth made songs vapid sounding except for "Can I play with Madness" and seemed they were deliberately going into a more pop/rock/prog direction. I gave up after that and never returned.

    A very interesting question, indeed!
I would answer this with a 'No', but there are a few albums that I think DO suck! All of their 90s albums are bad, in my opinion, but with the return of Bruce and Adrian, Brave New World is one of my absolute favourites. Dance of Death is great, apart from the incomprehensibly bad artwork, but the next 2 are forgettable. I agree on Benjamin Breeg, though. BRILLIANT song!
My only problem with Book of Souls is the artwork. I can't fathom why they didn’t use the middle section of the trifold as the cover, and I'm the same with Senjutsu. I must admit I still haven't given that album a fair go, yet. I need to change that.

You mention some great Maiden albums Simon. Brave New World is one I enjoy, yes some of the
songs are somewhat repetitive - especially the title track.

It's all subjective. What I do think is that the writing suffered after Adrian Smith left and resulted in two patchy albums (NPFTD and FOTD), both of which as you point out have a couple of decent songs. I'm in a different frame if mind to the Blaze era which I think produced one decent album (,X Factor) and one ok album (Virtual xi). Had those not been released under the Iron Maiden banner and listened to without prejudice I think they would have been regarded better. Personally I like them. I don't mind the long songs and for me Maiden have made the transition into proggy waters quite well. These songs go down a storm live and form, alongside the older tracks an incredible live experience. I've seen them 14 times over the years and they only failed to really deliver once and that was the tour in 93 which went ahead after Bruce had announced his leaving, a very odd atmosphere on that tour.

    • @AttackFromDownunda
      @AttackFromDownunda  29 дней назад

Yes I hear after Bruce decided to leave those concerts were very awkward.Awesome you have
seen Maiden 14 times, i'm sure a lot of their longer songs translate better live than on the album.
Book Of Souls is one i could name that does for me.
Every artist i guess that has been around as long as Maiden will produce the odd patchy album.
At least in the 90's they did not try to jump on the Grunge Band-wagon.

Im into Maiden since 85. I think their best albums were made in the 80s. Ive spun Piece of Mind so many times ive worn the record out. My favourites are Piece of mind and Powerslave. For me it was the speed and rawness of those albums. 7th son was brilliant. S in time I didnt care for at first but is a classic to me now. N O the Beast and all those leading up to it are great especially Killers. Those albums for me were the magic of Maiden. Of the prog stuff Brave New World is very good. The X factor was a brutal album and Blaze for me was a mistake for maiden. No disrespect to the man. After brave, there are some great or ok albums with more like stand out songs in them but I would never consistently listen to an album. I miss their speed and balls to the wall riffs and solos from the early days. Like the 8Os stuff. I always wished they got back to their roots. I would love a Piece of mind or a Powerslave 2. But I still love the band.. Thanks mate

Well, ''suck'' is a big word. But I agree that the albums after ''Seventh Son'' are less classic. For me, there is Maiden before 1988 and after. If you take the best songs from each of the albums that followed '88 and put them all on one CD, what a freakin' great compilation! Bruce's solo career where he further sharpened his claws also helped perfect Maiden's style when he returned.

I did get a chuckle out of your "I'll be the one wearing the black t-shirt..." LOL FUN FACT: when I went to see Mercyful Fate with Pascal over a year ago, I decided to wear a PINK shirt... then during the show, i decided to look around and see if there are other pink shirts... Excellent review! Thank you! I would say that 1988 was the last one focused and concise album - 45 min bum! To make the rest better I would have to drop one song or two to make it listenable. Make the albums longer was definitely a wrong choice regardless of what Harris and crew wanna say to us from music and lyrics standpoint.
Funny enough I do like Book of Souls and exactly for the same reasons - I liked how they played songs from this album live. After the gig Id have to reconsider my thoughts and despite its length I can listen it as a whole afterwards with probably the last song dropped out.
The artists used to think in 45 min albums pattern which helped them to filter songs for main release and singles.
With Senjutsu I guess Harris wanted to repeat BoS success but I would rather prefer smth different. They just not like Yes or any prog band from 70s with full of ideas to stuff them in 20 min epic. Remember we love Maiden for epic songs as contrast to short ones ))

They're doesn't suck, but Iron Maiden is an 80's thing.
Harris' compositions are needing a clean-up. Probably Martin Birch was the only one that could say this to Steve🤪
Also, where are the twin & triple lead guitar harmonies, and why Steve is playing chords on the bass in a band with three guitarists??? He used to play basslines on the old stuff where he is still fiercely reproducing live.
So in a way, musical values and arrangements got poorer in Maiden's music after the 80's.
Someone needs to answer on this.

      @@AttackFromDownunda thanks!
But I don't think Andy is suitable for Maiden. Roy Z. said he would love to produce Maiden if only for once, if he had offered the job.
All of these guys would give Maiden this kind of modern, super pumped-up production - while what Maiden need, is an organic, more "natural" sound, the way Martin did. But I don't think Maiden's main problem is the sound or mixing, as I'm seeing mentioned so often.
Kevin is giving to them a proper modern sound, and that's OK.
The main problem is that Harris need a short of musical editor or advisor. The guy who would be a fan and would say to him "not that chord progression again - you did that before" or "add a twin guitar harmony there" or "do not repeat this part too much" etc.
While Bruce is singing better than ever on the album's after the Reunion, the music mostly on Harris compositions is a case of "it could have been better" and Steve is often repeating a mediocre formula of his most miserable ideas from the 90's.
"No Prayer" was an ugly surprise for me : it was like someone suddenly closed the tap of inspiration for Maiden - and God, I hated Bruce's raspy vocals. The "back to basics" approach was rushed and poorly executed.
I might add that for Maiden's misery in the 90's wasn't neither Janick's or Blaze's fault.
No band can't be inspired or can stay on top of the game forever - is just so hard.
For me "A Matter Of Life And Death" is my favorite Maiden album after 1988 - not perfect, but it does capturing the conceptual consistency they had in the 80's, in a better way.

There are some great tracks on these later albums.I'm also very comfortable with the 80's albums,
what a run of fantastic music! in the 80's.
Took it for granted back then.🤘

Absolutely not. Matter of life and death is amazing. X Factor is underrated. Virtual is questionable but with some hidden gems. Dance of death is great fun and brave new world is strong too. No prayer is raw and gritty and a slight back to roots album
Final frontier, fear of the dark, senjutsu and book of souls are closer to the bottom though 😂

Absolutely not. They all suck after 1986. Somewhere In Time was the last great Iron Maiden album. Sorry! Self-titled, Killers, and Number of the Beast are A+. Piece of Mind and Powerslave are A. Somewhere In Time is an A-. Seventh Son is a C+. It's Ds to Fs from then on.

I tend to agree. They had a sort of revival with Blaze, despite everybody or almost everybody criticized him... but it took a lot of time to them and Blaze to get used to each other. When they finally started getting a new sound and a new formula (Virtual), they fired him and went back to Bruce, giving illusions to everybody. Brave New World gave some expectations, but it was just a 7 IMO. Since then it had bee a slow & constant spiraling into a musical nonsense. The replacement of Martin Birch with K. Shirley doomed their sound and sound engineering definitely. The firing of Derick Riggs too had a huge impact, IMO. The artwork was as important a part to me, as the music. A Life of Matter and Death is the only one that has good vibes and power, IMO. But lyrics suck!

Kind of feel sorry for the raw deal Blaze got. Whatever he did I don't think he could win in the end.
Some good comments there about the production of these later albums.
I do think a new producer would be a good idea for their next album. As they need to get out of
their comfort zone a bit, and Steve take more of a backseat productionwise.
But Maiden has always done things their way forever. So I don't think they will want to mess with
      the current formula.
      Cheers for watching🤘
