Mistakes were made... In the process of making this video I inadvertently switched columns when entering data. The Scout 101 has a 150 mm rear tire not 180 mm, as claimed in the video. And I also switched the suspension travel for both bikes. The Sport Chief has the longer suspension travel at 100 mm on the rear and 130 mm on the front VS the Scout 101's 76 mm for the rear and 120 mm on the front. My apologies, I will endeavour to do my best to ensure these types of egregious errors don't occur again in the future... but for now, I'm blaming my age 😁

The sound of the thunderstroke with stage 2, indian cams is intoxicating! I’ve owned 2 Indians with thunderstroke 111, since 2017 and nothing else sounds as good! That pushrod air cooled engine has a ton of character. In my opinion these bikes couldn’t be more different! Both apples and oranges are round but that’s about it for similarities.

I have owned a Scout 101 for 4 weeks and am completely satisfied. I'm 184cm tall and the front foot pegs are perfect. A very relaxed ride. And the torque is absolutely sufficient on country roads - that's all it needs :-) The problem is in the minds of many (male) motorcyclists. Size, size, size. And Scout just sounds like a ‘beginner’ in the Indian model range. But that is absolutely not the case with the 101. It definitely towers over its big brother.

I had a scout before it was stolen and upgraded to the Sport chief. Its a big difference but I wouldn't go back to the scout. The extra weight and the larger frame of the Sport Chief might scare you away from it but its quite nimble and very controllable, plus tons of aftermarket support that can fit the bike to anyone!

I’m 6’ tall and I just picked up an Indian bobber 20 today with the forward controls and I fit perfectly on it. I love this thing.
Before this I had a triumph scrambler 900 and I loved it but I got t boned by a car a couple of weeks ago now so I had to get a new bike.
I found that I had to put highway pegs on my scrambler because the mid controls would give me a twinge in my hip now and again until that hip flexor scratched out. So I’m really digging the forward control.
It’s going to take a little time and to get use to them as I’ve been riding my triump for the past 5 years.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed stuff about the scouts being this or that.. and the seat being uncomfortable or slippy, but the only thing I’ve found that I don’t like is I hit a couple of I guess bigger bumps that wouldn’t have been an issue on my scrambler that felt like getting a punch in the gut lol. So there something I’m going to have to get use to. Other than that I love it

I had a Chieftain and for me the heat was a deal breaker and I replaced it with a Challenger. My wife has an older Scout and it's heat is manageable. I'm now considering a lighter bike as I'm into my 70s and the Scout 101 is on my shortlist. My mail complaint is the tiny tank size as where I live there can be larger distances between gas stations. One of my favourite rides would require carrying extra gas somehow.

If you’re the market for one and can wait til winter that’s what I would do if I wanted to save 1-2k USD.
Here in Texas, USA, I got the bike for msrp 16,999. + tax title licensing registration dealer prep and sales tax 6.25% brings my grand total to just under 21 thousand US.

The Scout 101 is definitely a valid competition to the Sport Chief with its lighter weight, more lean angle, DCT, more HP and more modular design. The aftermarket folks are going to love this platform and I'm sure in a few months a lot of nice goodies are going to be available. Same with tunes, with an aftermarket intake, exhaust and tune 125+HP will be easily achievable. While it certainly will eat into the sales of the Chief lineup, I think overall it's a win for Indian. They will attract customers from other brands, even if they lose a couple Chief sales to the new Scout. Also, Indian has to work on enhancements for the Chief lineup at some point anyhow. Many have been calling for a liquid-cooled Sport Chief, which would certainly be an interesting bike.

You have just provided all the power, torque and weight figures for the bikes.
I suspect that the torque of the heavier bike, is going to have it off the mark and halfway down the 1/4 mile before the scout has a chance to sneeze.
I think l know this because of the freight train type torque l had on my Yamaha XV 1900 road liner. I have ridden quite a few bike in my years of riding, and whike power at high revs has some advantages, instant torque is just unbelievable. I compare that to my BMW 1150 GS and my Suzuki Vstrom 1050.
But let's see what you found out.

I am a little surprised that the power output on the 1250 engine is so low. It is obviously aimed at the Sportster S. As a package though, even though the Sportster makes more power, I would likely choose the Scout if I were buying today (I own the Sportster S so I am not talking totally out of my arse). The 101 Scout is a really nice looking machine.

The only aspect of the Scout 101 that I don't like are the handlebars. I think they need to be pulled back more....somewhat like the mini-apes that was on the Scout Twenty. I test rode the Sport Chief a few months ago and really didn't like the bike. Lots of torque, but also a lot of vibration, including that front wind screen vibrating all of the place.

Agree Indian needs to go to work on the Sport Chief / Thunderstroke to bring its performance on par with the 101 and perhaps more importantly the HD softail line. Particularly the very successful LRS or Low Rider Sport.
I think the looks of the Chief line and Sport is good and on par. Handling suspension & comfort should be looked at but isn’t the key short coming. Yes they are all 3 cruisers not sport bikes but they are sport cruisers. And as such they should have some muscle. Especially relative to other cruisers and yes to each other. This is the main thing Indian needs to revamp about the Sport Chief.
You gave it a generous 90 HP estimate at too short 4,200 rpm’s. Indian has already gave it a bigger bore for displacement & breathing and bumped the compression to 11-1 for more but still safe efficiency. This is on par with the similar m8. So what is holding it up? In a word breathing. Better cam yes and probably something that makes peak HP around 5,200 rpm like the similar motor and latest 117 m8 instead of 4,200. ie still a torque monster but not one that runs out of breath too early to make HP. To go with that and more importantly heads intake & a filter system that doesn’t restrict it. The old adage is the power is in the heads. I think the heads need a serious revamp that takes full advantage of the newer larger bore of the 116 and appropriate cam. Probably 4 valve heads as the others for greater total valve circumference for deeper breathing while keeping low rpm velocity.
I have a 114ci m8 that in 2019 using all HD parts including same 11-1 compression. Warranty & U.S. EPA compliant tuner, cam, and S&S 2-1 pipe with catalyst which made, at the wheel
    118 HP
    122 TQ
No reason the 116 TS could not do the same.
Lastly I think review your comparison the Sport should come standard with forward controls like the 101 with mid controls being a dealer available option. No way the smaller 550 pound 101 should more comfortably fit a taller larger person than the larger torqier 668 pound Sport.

101 sounds like a bargain put up against the Chief, but then the BMW r18 is like 25K AUD. The 101 seems to be quite different to the rest of the Scout lineup, the Bobber, Rogue and vanilla Scout all look like they have previous models rear suspension, and same instrument cluster if you don't pay the additional fee. Have mixed feelings about bikes that are highly stylized from the factory. You can't really modify them as it defeats the purpose and thus they all eventually look the same once they start appearing on the road in any volume.

  • @DonMachado

I currently own a Scout Bobber 20 which I love, but there is no comparative build in the new Scout lineup. In order for me to take a Scout Bobber Limited +tech, then add the upgrades that would turn it into a similar Bobber 20 style, the cost would only be just a few hundred dollars short of the Chief Bobber Darkhorse, Between the two, I would probably opt for the Darkhorse. As to the comparison between the Scout 101 and the Sport Chief, the Sport Chief suspension is superior to the 101, at least in the US. The numbers are reversed with the Chief having 100mm of rear travel, where the Scout has 76mm. The Scout has about 10mm more front travel than the Chief which seems negligible to me. Also the quoted horsepower for the Scout is 111bhp. Since the Chief has no published HP, you have to use the dyno and they tend to measure whp. That's not exactly a fair comparison. I also think forward controls on the Chief could help mitigate any discomfort taller riders might have using mid-controls. Cheers!

The Scout has a large PEAK hp to weight advantage. Engines make power across their entire rev range. It's the sum of all that power across the rev range that tells the story.
Torque to weight is meaningless. Torque is only meaningful if the rpm at which it's measured is given. For example, Sport Chief makes PEAK torque at 105.2 ft lbs at 2410 rpm. That means it's making 48 hp at 2410 rpm. The Scout is making less power at that rpm, but you really need the power curve to know by how much.
The Scout 101 makes its peak torque of 82 ft-lbs at 6,300 rpm. So, the Scout is making 98.4 hp @ 6300 rpm. IOW, it takes twice the power from the engine and to the rear wheel to make 82 ft lbs of torque at 6300 rpm than it takes to make 105.2 ft lbs at 2410 rpm. The Chief will definitely be easier to take off from a start with a fat lady on the back without stalling.
I just demo'd the Classic version of the Scout and may buy one. The guy leading was on a Chief and it pulled a little faster off the line if I just accelerated normally. If I wanted to rev it up and dump the clutch, I think I would have left him. Way different engines though. I love big thrummy twins. Very relaxing. This Scout is smooth as a cue ball and its revvier nature makes the bike feel sporty. I don't think one is any better for daily riding than the other, but it's different and it's fun riding bikes that feel different. Keeps things interesting.

When it comes to cruiser motorcycles, I am disappointed by the limited lean angle. It’s not because the chassis can’t handle it; they intentionally make them low to look “cool”. It’s a shame; even a Suzuki Burgman can lean 40 degrees. Imagine both of these bikes getting whooped by a Burgman in the twisties - hahaha.
