  • Planning and prioritizing can be quite a challenge for ADHD Brains -- so when our external structure falls apart (heyyy, COVID...) we often need a lil help rebuilding. This video, I partnered with Owaves (owaves.com/how...) to show you their incredibly ADHD friendly app on iOS, which makes it easy to visually structure our day -- and their new feature "My Moai" lets us connect with others to see their day, too!

    Hello Brains! If you do try out the app and you like it, and you wanna leave a review, use #HowtoADHD - 2 reasons: 1) they’ll donate to the channel for every review, 2) I’m really curious to know what you guys think. If I know what my community thinks of this app - I will go through and read those reviews - then it helps me make better content for you guys in the future! For ANDROID users -- it looks like Owaves is planning an Android version, you can sign up to be notified here: owaves.com/android/
    In the meantime, several of the brains have recommended Sectograph :)

    Here's how I plan out my day: have a to do list I rarely stick to, procrastinate something super important, have a mental breakdown over not having completed that super important thing weeks ago, begin that super important thing through tears of stress, realise its easy to continue once ive begun and finish it.

    I try to have three priorities in a day.
    First priority is something urgent, unpleasant or mentally exhausting (say bills, taxes, that one phone call or email I've put off forever). I'm allowed to spend 15 minutes with it, no more. If I've not finished by the time the timer goes off, no problem, I'll continue the next day. If I spend that 15 minutes crying and shaking in a corner because I just CANNOT do it that day, that's fine too. When the time's up I don't have to worry about it for the next 24 hours.
    The next two priorities have to do with study/work and pets/home. These I do after the urgent one. Not everything gets done everyday. But I've not ran out of socks yet.

    • @noh-1386
      @noh-1386 3 года назад +40

      This actually seems like something I might try. The concept is something I've played with a little recently (got some seriously stressful DPS business taken care of, only took a couple of meltdowns, lol.) but 15 minutes is actually a more accurate timeframe than the hour I was stressing myself out with. I'll try it your way.

    • @gr8dvd
      @gr8dvd 3 года назад +23

      Very smart... give yourself permission to spend only 15m on a dreaded task. BTW I’ve got a similar list (plus healthcare insurance/provider research/selection).

    • @sushuis6247
      @sushuis6247 3 года назад +46

      @@noh-1386 My reasoning was that it's much easier to commit 15 minutes than say, an hour. Plus if the task is gonna take me an hour total, I'll be done in four days instead of procrastinating with it for weeks and months because I don't know where or when to start. I actually tried with an hour first and yeeeah, this is definitely more doable. :D
      Also, if I don't know the steps involved in doing the thing, the first 15 can be spent trying to figure those out or doing some research. Do let me know if you deside to try it out and how it goes.

    One think I've found helpful when scheduling is to always give myself more than one option for each block of time. 10-11 am can be Coding / Reading Essay / Exercising, and then 11-12 can be Gaming / Napping / Reading fiction. This makes it so I don't think about a schedule as a shackle but instead just a selection of important things that I can choose from ad-hoc instead of wasting time on things that are not important (social media)

    • @patchouliodonovan9529
      @patchouliodonovan9529 2 года назад +21

      @@natashatuskovichcoworking This is something that it's pretty standard to write into a behaviour management plan for people with autism spectrum disorders or other disabilities that have neurological impacts. Routines are the absolute key, but we always offer choices whenever we can, because it turns the task into a positive experience that the client chose for themselves, rather than a negative experience that was forced upon them.
      Even with tasks you think are non-negotiable like brushing teeth, the teeth brushing part is non-negotiable but we can offer the choice of now or later, choice of toothbrush, choice of toothpaste, whatever works. "Hey, would you like to brush your teeth with the mint or the bubblegum toothpaste this morning?".
      If you can include lots of little choices throughout the day, it helps to feel like your day has structure, without feeling overly controlled.

    As a law student with ADHD, my biggest strategy has been keeping a future calendar - for example, as soon as I get an email that has to do with a future time commitment, I throw that in my calendar. Then, I keep lists of tasks that don't have specific times but I need to do. Mid week, I'll see all the tasks I need to do and check off what I've already done. I can also block out time in the future to finish a task. For example, I had a problem with my electricity bill this month. I picked a day 3-4 days ahead to call the company when I knew I'd have enough time, and I remembered to do it because I had a calendar notification. Also, I was more mentally prepared to tackle this task since I had planned to do it. This helps me break down an overwhelming day/week into manageable bits.

    • @jessicahoude8637
      @jessicahoude8637 Год назад +1

      I do this too and it has worked long term! I use todoist to keep track of tasks. The key for me is to not make due dates unless it really needs to be done by that day. I have to use calendar appointments for real appointments and rare scheduled tasks so it’s always good information. Too much or wishful thinking planning and I’ll just ignore the whole thing.

    Jessica,
    You have been such an inspiration and drive for me to better myself as someone who struggles with ADHD.
    For years growing up I never felt like I "clicked" with anyone. I was too loud, too energetic, too "random". But watching your videos not only teaches me how to deal with my ADHD, but also teaches me things I didn't realize about myself. More so than that, showing anyone can have bad days makes me feel better about my bad days. I struggled a lot in my early adult life with negative thoughts and emotions. I would lash out at people, and to be honest, it's a work in progress. I know I still have much to do to be the best version of myself, and I know that somehow I will get there, because I have you and your videos.
    So thank you for making this channel, and thank you for embracing your ADHD to show the world that ADHD isn't a curse, it's a superpower!
    Sincerely,
    A very appreciative viewer

But that's really not much to do with the job you are doing, so why do so many places micromanage it as long as there's not a safety issue or what have you? It's like places don't expect employees to be humans sometimes. I'm glad your job is cool but it reminds me of places that are way too rigid. I worked for someone once who told me not to write down instructions. And for someone who said I had to be at my station by 8 a.m. (reasonable) but I couldn't get there five minutes early to make my tea and have the buffer of time that I need to make 8 a.m. consistently. (Not ADHD but definitely a space cadet with terrible organization and sense of time.)

    I've been researching ADHD a lot because my friend was just diagnosed, and when I found this channel, I was so impressed by how perfect everything was. It was so professional! Then, I saw this video, and it makes me feel so validated. I'm not even sure how to explain. Everything is still amazingly professional and I'm so impressed by the quality still. But I have a lot of perfectionistic behaviors and habits, and this helps me realize and see that I don't have to have perfect eye contact to make an incredible video. Now, me making an incredible video is still likely not going to happen because of other beliefs and limitations but at least now I know that eye contact isn't necessarily something I need to do 24/7 lol.
    So, thank you. Thank you for making so many high quality videos, especially this one. I feel like I understand ADHD a lot better, and that as an educator, I can support students with ADHD in a more effective and informed way.
    Thank you for not making eye contact. Thank you for being here even when so much has been happening in the world. Thank you for all you've helped me understand.

      Honestly yeah I've tried out a smartwatch and it's not generally for me, but if there were such a thing as a watch device that was dedicated specifically to an app like this and worked well with it, then I would probably go for it if it were affordable. I'd rather have a dedicated device for this app, that makes the circle view the default display, than a full smartwatch. Far less distracting.

You schedule 50-minute video call sessions with an accountability partner, who is there to silently work alongside you so you both get things done. The pressure to show up for my accountability partner and to follow through on the task I tell them I must complete is like magic! 10/10 highly recommend 😄👍🏻

    I totally feel having that want to to learn something for years on end. I've been trying to learn Japanese for years and it wasn't until recently that I felt like I've started making progress. Couple things that helped:
    1) Being crystal clear in my head as to why I want to learn the thing, what I can do with that skill, how long it takes to learn that skill, and any other question that might pop up in my head. **Ask yourself LOTS of question!**
    2) Have a goal that you can't fail at. I tried doing a daily quiz on Anki, but would get distraught when I would get the same question wrong 5 times in a row. I'd just think I was an idiot. Now I'm instead going through a textbook that has me write out a lot of sentences to drill it in and I just focus on doing them, asking myself questions along the way.
    3) Know roughly how long the thing takes. Just throwing out an "Oh I want to finish this in a half hour because experts do it that fast." That hasn't worked for me making progress. The textbook I'm going through right now estimates people take 2 hours on the chapter and so I do that and add some extra time for my ADHD. Then I have to imagine what that looks like during the day and make sure I do it at a time that doesn't have something right after it just in case.
    This is what I've learned so far. Also the 3 things a day Jessica brought up, Billionaire Tony Robbins is also a big proponent of if you want to look more into how to apply it to yourself.
    www.tonyrobbins.com/podcasts/3-steps-breakthrough/#:~:text=In%20this%20episode%20of%20the,for%20any%20success%20or%20failure.

    • @danielbaljeu3669
      @danielbaljeu3669 3 года назад

      2 other things I remembered later that have also helped:
      4) Of those 3 things, at least 1 thing should be able to be done in a short amount of time. Even if I don't have the 2 hours to work on Japanese because life happens, I still have 20 minutes to do my exercise routine and have accomplished something of meaning towards my goals today. On the flip side, also don't schedule yourself to work on something for 10 hours Saturday. Unless your life is actually on the line, you'll put it off for 5 hours in the morning and the thing never gets done.
      5) Rearrange/Decorate the house to be a helpful reminder to do the thing. In order to do my goal of exercising, I'd have to rearrange my bedroom every time to make sure I had enough room for a yoga mat. After a week I gave up. However when I took my desk that I'd been slouching in out of my bedroom and kept enough space to have a yoga mat always there, I was a lot more inclined to do it. To remind myself to study Japanese, I got a fake Bamboo tree to decorate my room behind the TV. It's big and more fun than a sticky note on the door.

      If you frequently forget to eat, you'll frequently be tired. That being said, the jar metaphor is particularly important for folks with low energy/limited stamina. Without consciously choosing what the most important things are, we run the risk of running out of energy before we get to them. I frequently overestimate my mental and physical stamina (they are very different, and often don't align). By taking time to sift through priorities before getting started, I'm more likely to be able to get the most important things done.

    Aww man kinda wish you'd started with "this isn't on Android" lol. I watched the whole video getting really excited and then felt pretty disappointed when you mentioned it wasn't for Android.

    OMG!!! Thank you so much for this! I’ve struggled so hard with remote learning bc my ADHD-ness has been like “bro you don’t have school today...” meanwhile my semester is currently a total dumpster fire. This is exactly what I need!
    Thanks for your willingness to share and advocate for the tribe!
    P.S. you have no idea how many times I rewatch your videos (especially your TED talk)! ❤️

    You should look into David Allen's book getting things done. Short summary: Capture any thought that comes to mind because you will forget. Assign an importance. Give it a date. Give it a time duration most importantly - It could be 1 minute or 1 hour.
    This helps you see what you can quickly get done while you have some extra time or don't feel like taking on an intricate task

    TL;DR: My "big rocks" are three routines which I use a fun app called Timo (not tiimo!) to walk me through with timers. For sleeping at the same time each day, I use Sleeptown
    Long version: I use a few apps over the course of a day. To stay engaged with something it has to be fun in some way so I've ended up with a toolbox full of gamified or made for kids apps, which is fine! The cornerstones of planning my day are Timo (not to be confused with tiimo) and Sleeptown. Timo is an app made for kids that lets you save 3 routines- morning, afternoon, and evening- which are a list of tasks each with an associated countdown timer. It looks fun, sounds fun, and even though it is centered around countdowns it is very forgiving- there's even an option to pause for 10 minutes that you can use three times during each routine. My three routine setups are breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they include everything I need to do to stay alive, basically. Eating, showering, taking my meds... You get rewarded stars which you can use to buy clothes for your little avatar. Very cute!
    The morning and afternoon (between my Timo routines) are for tasks and work. I don't really timetable this time, but I set a small number of to dos for each day using my BuJo.
    Sleeptown rewards me for going to bed before a certain time, and for getting up at a certain time. The game aspect is building a town, one building per night, and similar to focus apps like Forest it will detect if you use a different app during the time you say you'll sleep, which is a great encouragement to put my phone down. I don't want my little houses to be demolished!
