- Image and temple worship form the center practice for many Hindus. However the strange rituals and ideas can often be judged as primitive and pagan.
But as this video explains, Hindus see God not only as transcendent but immanent in creation. Through the science of ritual and faith the infinite and omnipresent Divinity can be awakened and enlivened even in inanimate objects.
The ancient Upanishad scriptures provide the theological and spiritual basis upon which Image worship is based; and once this is understood the reasons for seeing the Murthi (temple image) as Divine becomes clear.
The beauty of this, is that by seeing the Murthi as God and not just a statue, the devotee is gifted a portal through which he can contact the Divine first hand.

My own guru is muslim from practising muslim family and beside practicing Islam they were influenced by Vedantic school of Hinduism. Even though he now follow Hinduism but still maintain his muslim name as he think at core level all religions are same.

very nicely explained again. not all hindus do murti pooja though, some sects don't believe in this form of worship. hinduism gives freedom to choose way of worship and this is what differentiate hinduism from other faiths.

Idols are essentially symbols. Alphabets are symbols too. Bending and facing a particular direction is also a crude form of symbolic worship. Fraud and shallow terms used for manipulating fools.
Whether it's symbolic worship or non symbolic worship /meditation, hindus don't need lectures from Abrahamic /Islamic clowns.
Idols (murti) are considered as symbolism for the absolute but not the absolute, or icons of spiritual ideas, or the embodiment of the divine. They are a means to focus one's religious pursuits and worship (bhakti).

I am very new to Hinduism... and I waiting to be bring statues of my beautiful Lord Ganesha and gorgeous MahaLaxmi to my local Hindu Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to be consecrated...but I cant cos Malaysia is under Covid Lockdown at the time I am writing this.
From what I have heard from Dr Pillai (well known Ganesha Expert), The Statues are actually like 'SATELITES' that transmit and receive information from 1 dimension/ realm to another dimension/realm. We do not 'worship' the statues...but the ENERGIES of the Deities they represent.
This video is extraordinarily helpful to understand why so many people have murti worship part of their lives, and in fact, part of every day life. Seeing this as a portal into a shared experience with the Divine was a major inspiration for me; modern life now seems such an isolated and fearful place without such a practice in it. Thank you for outlining it so clearly and representing the ideas so effectively.

My Muslim flat mate in London came from Iraq as an asylum seeker and don't know where his parents are all he has is his parents one picture. He everyday kiss that picture and sometimes cry.
I am not very religious and hardly pray but, I love Hinduism. One day I was praying and kissed a picture of Krishna and he was like that picture isn't your God. I replied true it's just a physical representation of my Lord which reminds me of my duties and makes me feel better safe and connected with him. Islam is a disease. Even if someone is worshipping idols what is the problem? At least they are not blowing people up in the name of Allah. When anyone worships images, it is the God that is being worshipped, and not the image itself. Hindus worship animals and trees as well. This is because they honour life, and believe in the true omnipresence of the God, and that God is definitely not the false Allah. If the God is omnipresent, he is present in everything, and thus, anything can be worshipped because everything is the abode of God. Krishna said in Geeta no matter what you worship, how you worship, your prayer would reach me. This is the nature of a true omnipresent God. He knows as he is the only God, and present everywhere, it is practically impossible to pray anybody else, not like imaginary sick Allah, who is always jealous of others. I just hate Islam.

@dream31 Personaly what I beleive is why the idol worship is not appreciated in muslim and sikhism is that it wants to make sure that people should not just cling to the physical form but understand that ultimately we have to go beyond physical form. Although it's not so easy to explain Dharma, but let me try in capacity of my understanding:
Dharma is based on Righteousness which in the core is based on the principle of "Minimization of Harm". Harm of what? Harm of 'Prakriti' which is neither 'aatman' nor 'brahman' bcoz aatman and brahman can't be harmed or unharmed. Prakriti includes everything in our behavioural life that we have to deal with, both living & non-living. So it includes Human society and it's Dynamic Value System, Animal Kingdom, Plants, Water, Soil, Sunlight, different Celestial bodies and everything remaining in this physical world which I might be missing here.
Making it more simpler, I would like to explain it one line or two:
First analyzing one's strengths and weaknesses according to a given dilemma situation of either conflicting responsibilities or non-conflicting responsibilities (that need to be prioritized), one should take that decision (or even at least think of it because one's intention also comes in his/her Karmic fold) at that moment in the capacity of one's intellect, experience and understanding; which would bring the maximum 'benefit' to the 'Prakriti' in whole for the larger amount of time possible. Now this 'harm' and 'benefit' requires a very detailed subjective analysis that changes from one situation to another. Dharma evolves with time on the principle of 'least harm' and harm from challenges that also keep changing with time.
For an example, let us take about 'peace'. Today to maintain peace in this age of war of faiths and civilizations, Dharma too has evolved by eliminating the principle of "One way Tolerance irrespective of what comes in return" and adding the concept of Poison Pills like Mutual-Respect and even Scriptural changes based on some minimum qualifier i.e., Mutual-Respect.
Take any other real life examples like Vegetarianism, Best World Order, Democracy, Economy, Corporate Dharma, Feminism, Freedom of Expression, Diversity in Unity vs Unity in Diversity, etc and try to critically analyze it, and you would understand what Dharma is indeed.

Argument 1: “No Romans, No Salvation”: They say “Jesus died to save you from sins” but Jesus wouldn’t have died if the Romans hadn’t killed him. Therefore you should thank/worship the Romans for salvation before you thank Jesus cos after all, Christianity is all about paying gratitude, right ?
Argument 2: If you don't give credit for Salvation to the Romans, then it would mean that Jesus died on his own without anyone's help/interference, which means “he killed himself” - and killing yourself is called "suicide". Then you rather change your slogan to "Jesus committed suicide for you" - but wait, isn't suicide a sin in Christianity ? Jesus Christ!! Jesus was a sinner!
I have a great respect for Jesus Christ as a human, but since I have seen so many Christians in my day to day life and here in this comment section too not wanting to accept the win-win concept of Mutual-Respect and keep on saying Hindus worship demons and 'satan', let me respond to them in reciprocation since I don't believe in one way tolerance at the cost of no matter what comes in return that You, ur God, ur religion & ur people became my enemies the day they declared me, my God, faith & people enemy. This is not idolatry. Because idolatry means you are going after fame or money or sex or something very pleasure and more important than God to you. But if you people call ideology as idolatry too, then we Hindus can't help you because Abrahamic faiths are also about ideologies in one way or the other. But when you repeatedly say that you're going to heaven, I certainly feel pity for your EGO.
What they say idols is actually symbolism which is present in Christianity and Islam too. The only thing is that you keep it unknowingly whereas we keep it knowingly. Now let me tell them why symbolism is important. Notice that I say 'symbolism' important and that too in the initial phase of consciousness, but not mandatory. We believe in evolution, be it scientifically or spiritually, and therefore what we mean by 'Dharma' is not 'Religion' by the Western understanding. But that's another topic. So my point is that if the Abrahamic cults still want to say symbolism as idolatry, then please let them keep on because we are mature enough to handle disagreements decently because we believe in open architecture. But since we don't believe in bloody Tolerance(which seems very insulting to me), therefore we have our own principle of Minimization of Harm & Mutual-Respect which says that we will keep on respecting them genuinely regardless of their belief-system or faith only if they reciprocate the same for us.
Symbolism (idolatry) is important for a beginner to concentrate. It's like you need to understand all the fundamental concepts of finite numbers (& discreet) before you try to understand the universal behavior of Infinity (& continuous). Don't you try to master in Arithmetic first before you jump to Algebra? Now this infinity may be analysed in both infinitely bigger or infinitely smaller aspects of cosmos. Therefore we have both outward (Science) and inward (Spirituality) looking approach in Hinduism unlike exclusive Abrahamic faiths which believe only in scriptures and neither in outward seeking nor in inward seeking. The only difference is that we believe in evolution and hence updates and reinterpretation of our scriptures is natural because there's no EGO in our Sanatana Tradition, whereas they think their scriptures as perfect...hahaha

This does not denigrate the worshipper of “ another god “ . It just says , all worships done with devotion ( shraddha) , will be accepted by Bhagaban Krishna , even if they are not done as per the regulations of the usual and accepted religion ( in this case Hindu religion ) . This puts the devotion of a person as the most important object , more over the creed and the rituals . Here we find a very confident God , who is not afraid of people worshipping “ Other Gods “ . Although it's not so easy to explain Dharma, but let me try in capacity of my understanding:
Dharma is based on Righteousness which in the core is based on the principle of "Minimization of Harm". Harm of what? Harm of 'Prakriti' which is neither 'aatman' nor 'brahman' bcoz aatman and brahman can't be harmed or unharmed. Prakriti includes everything in our behavioural life that we have to deal with, both living & non-living. So it includes Human society and it's Dynamic Value System, Animal Kingdom, Plants, Water, Soil, Sunlight, different Celestial bodies and everything remaining in this physical world which I might be missing here.
Making it more simpler, I would like to explain it one line or two:
First analyzing one's strengths and weaknesses according to a given dilemma situation of either conflicting responsibilities or non-conflicting responsibilities (that need to be prioritized), one should take that decision (or even at least think of it because one's intention also comes in his/her Karmic fold) at that moment in the capacity of one's intellect, experience and understanding; which would bring the maximum 'benefit' to the 'Prakriti' in whole for the larger amount of time possible. Now this 'harm' and 'benefit' requires a very detailed subjective analysis that changes from one situation to another. Dharma evolves with time on the principle of 'least harm' and harm from challenges that also keep changing with time.
For an example, let us take about 'peace'. Today to maintain peace in this age of war of faiths and civilizations, Dharma too has evolved by eliminating the principle of "One way Tolerance irrespective of what comes in return" and adding the concept of Poison Pills like Mutual-Respect and even Scriptural changes based on some minimum qualifier i.e., Mutual-Respect.
Take any other real life examples like Vegetarianism, Best World Order, Democracy, Economy, Corporate Dharma, Feminism, Freedom of Expression, Diversity in Unity vs Unity in Diversity, etc and try to critically analyze it, and you would understand what Dharma is indeed.

BTW, we even worship stones, rivers, cows, monkeys, snakes, birds, insects, mountains, etc in gratefulness bcoz we believe that creator is not separate in manifestations from creations. We believe God is one, but we don't believe he is in the sky hanging there and watching all from above. haha..Btw why one GOD, we believe in half God, 1/10 God, or even minus infinity God, what's your problem? We don't believe in discreet God, rather we have faith in continuous God that can't be explained in numbers. So better shut up and remain happy with your God without intruding into our affairs. Otherwise you know we will not be tolerant to the intolerant ideologies on the Dharmic principle of Mutual-Respect...Hahaha
This is not idolatry. Because idolatry means you are going after fame or money or sex or something very pleasure and more important than God to you. But if you people call ideology as idolatry too, then we Hindus can't help you because Abrahamic faiths are also about ideologies in one way or the other. But when you repeatedly say that you're going to heaven and non-belivers into hell permanently, I certainly feel pity for your EGO.
An image is an appropriate mental intermediary that "bridges between the inner world of the mind and the outer world of material reality", the image is a vehicle between sensation and reason. Idols are useful psychological catalysts, they reflect sense data and pre-existing inner feelings. They are neither the origins nor the destinations of thought but the intermediary in the human inner journey.
What they say idols is actually symbolism which is present in Christianity and Islam too. The only thing is that you keep it unknowingly whereas we keep it knowingly. Now let me tell them why symbolism is important. Notice that I say 'symbolism' important and that too in the initial phase of consciousness, but not mandatory. We believe in evolution, be it scientifically or spiritually, and therefore what we mean by 'Dharma' is not 'Religion' by the Western understanding. But that's another topic. So my point is that if the Abrahamic cults still want to say symbolism as idolatry, then please let them keep on because we are mature enough to handle disagreements decently because we believe in open architecture. But since we don't believe in bloody Tolerance(which seems very insulting to me), therefore we have our own principle of Minimization of Harm & Mutual-Respect which says that we will keep on respecting them genuinely regardless of their belief-system or faith only if they reciprocate the same for us.

Symbolism (idolatry) is important for a beginner to concentrate. It's like you need to understand all the fundamental concepts of finite numbers (& discreet) before you try to understand the universal behavior of Infinity (& continuous). Don't you try to master in Arithmetic first before you jump to Algebra? Now this infinity may be analysed in both infinitely bigger or infinitely smaller aspects of cosmos. Therefore we have both outward (Science) and inward (Spirituality) looking approach in Hinduism unlike exclusive Abrahamic faiths which believe only in scriptures and neither in outward seeking nor in inward seeking. The only difference is that we believe in evolution and hence updates and reinterpretation of our scriptures is natural because there's no EGO in our Sanatana Tradition, whereas they think their scriptures as perfect...hahaha

So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before Yahweh.

Then Abraham approached and said, "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

Perhaps there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous that are there?

Far be it from you to do such a thing, killing the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be treated the same as the wicked. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?"

Yahweh said, "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake."

Abraham answered and said, "Look, I have undertaken to speak to my Lord, even though I am only dust and ashes!

What if there are five less than fifty righteous? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" Then he said, "I will not destroy it, if I find there forty-five."

He spoke to him yet again, and said, "What if there are forty found there?" He replied, "I will not do it for the forty's sake."

He said, "Please do not be angry, Lord, so I may speak. Perhaps thirty will be found there." He replied, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there."

For we are about to destroy this place, because the accusations against it before Yahweh have become so loud that he has sent us to destroy it."

Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, the men who had promised to marry his daughters, and said, "Quick, get out of this place, for Yahweh is about to destroy the city." But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Get going, take your wife and your two daughters that are here, so you are not swept away in the punishment of the city."

But he lingered. So the men grabbed his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, because Yahweh was merciful to him. They brought them out, and set them outside the city.

When they had brought them out, one of the men said, "Run for your lives! Do not look back, or stay anywhere on the plain. Escape to the mountains so you are not swept away."
