Agreed!!!! I do think its according to what "era" they are from... OR the avg age group of their shops clients. I have a good friend whom I went to high school with 82-86..so you'd think she'd be all into doing the layered/shag/feathered cuts of our day. But she always seems to cut these very long layers that pretty much do nothing as far as movement. If she didn't give me such a huge discount, I'd probably find someone new... but I get roots, highlights, lowlights, wash, cut & blowdry..and I have a ton of hair..takes her like 3-4 hours most times...but I cant beat the price so..🤷🏼♀️
So today I had an appt with my hairdresser but they are closed due to lockdown so I watched this vid 5 times and cut my own hair using his technique. I may never pay for someone to cut my hair again people. Lookin goooood sistas :)

I am asked for shags all the time. The key is to modernixing is to angle it back to much and leave that angle for the front face frame, as to not create a mullet. I razor these a lot, too. Very rock n roll vibe. They look great on so many people..
The shag haircut is timeless. I love it and want my hair cut into a shag. Its been a long time since I wore it that way. I remember when I was in High School in the early 70s and my older teenaged brother came home asking for a shag haircut. Yes, when they originally started, they were unisex, or both sexs. Anyway, my mom, who cut our hair whenever it needed it, asked how to do it. My brother had gotten the directions from a friend. In those days, pre-internet, you learned things from other people. So he explained to Mom how to cut the shag, according to what his friend told him. This haircut was SO popular that everyone wanted it and it was a good thing that it was easy to cut because no one could afford to go to the salon to get it. Anyway, this is how we used to do it: Take a section of hair and hold it straight up. Determine how long you want to cut it. Once you have determined how much to cut off, pull all your hair straight up into a ponytail. Now cut it straight across. Thats it. You may have to go back in and clean it up a bit in some places, or not. It depends on your individual taste. Also, it may be shaggier than you want on the bottom, so if you don't want it real shaggy at the bottom, cut the length where you want it and leave out a thin layer when you make the ponytail. Viola! A REAL 70s shag haircut!
BTW- my brother, a handsome guy anyway, was even cuter in a shag haircut! Its a flattering style for pretty much everybody!

Yeeesss! I love it. I love a good shag.....cut lol 😂 but yeah you did a great job. Lol I love your sense of humour too. Also even though it may be outdated/ not in fashion so people say it doesn’t mean people can’t get this Cut when ever they want. I don’t agree with the whole sheep follow the world thing. I think we should all just be ourself and if we like it then get that cut even if it was an 80s cut who cares hey 🤷♀️

I sometimes blend like this and sometimes cut a shape over a shape with a disconnection that is visually "connected." I love this cut.
Exactly! I have never followed the crowd. When I find a haircut that I like, I do it and it stays that way until I find another!

Now I have long hair again and it looks so much better - maybe I will try this cut on myself. And I hope other hair stylists will watch and learn too!

I just got this shag cut today . I love it . I am 70 yrs old (young ) . My hair color is grey/white and I think it’s the best haircut for me . My hairdresser is good , but she’s been cut hair for 35 yrs too ….she knows I like this style shag look.

Fantastic. I would like to see you do this with bang and some shorter layer on top. I have a diy low density shoulder length culy shag that I put together watching several of your vids. It's the heavy bang and lots of layering on top that I would love to see a Pro do.
Your vids are so good, and shags are really popular right now. With COVID I've made 1 stop in a salon, and she didn't handle for hair well (lots of twisting and the gently cutting into.them to 'add volume😑). I really want to see a heavy highly textured bang and crown. Keep up the great vids.

I’ve gone to the salon soooooo many times and always ask for this haircut and no one gets it right! This is literally the image in my head but no one can execute it until now in your video. I don’t want to offend a hair dresser but heck I’m just gonna show them this next time
If you try to cut the sides like that on hair that's longer then shoulder length it's going to look like a mullet. You'd need to angle the sides and blend them the way you did in the back to keep the length on the sides similar to the back.

This seems like it would be a great haircut for a naturally curly person. My curls get really heavy on the side and back. Curious what you think? I have thick natural 2C/3A curls and a very coarse hair

For anyone trying to learn this I recommend watching many many of his videos. Because he has a pattern. Watch his lives. Watch his tutorials on real ppl. Watch his lives on mannequins. Watch them a hundred times until you know what he’s going to do next. Then watch so many times you recognize what other stylist are doing and then you’ll recognize what they aren’t doing. If he moves and you can’t see, he has a million other videos where you can see.
By the way, I love this one because to me it’s an exaggeration of how to cut layers. Instead of seeing a little hair coming off and being not sure what he cut it’s clear because of the amount of hair he’s cutting this time. I wouldn’t cut this on myself but it’s very educational. Try to watch videos even if it’s not the exact cut you want. It’s about gaining knowledge on HOW to cut hair. Instead of just trying to copy and not really understanding what you’re doing

It looks like a grown out mullet...and I bloody love it. Was waiting to find a style like this to ask my hair dresser to do but the only examples I could find were very extreme.
It's not even in the category of mullet...

@@nadia4067 i know what a mullet is....changing the name doesn't create a new perceived shape. Shags have been a hair creative statement since the early 70s at least, been there, cut them. Not a mullet.

@@nadia4067 no need to apologise...I suggest realising that the label mullet could be a label for almost any haircut short at the front and longer at the back. Just because someone states it as such for lack of a better description....doesn't make it true.

ABSOLUTELY! I did it when I was in college in the 90s. I had a short shag, reminscent of Mrs. Brady on the Brady Bunch, a tv show in the 70s. My short shag was awesome and everyone LOVED IT, including me!

@@ultracalicokittycat Ever hear the saying, " If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all?" I used the Mrs. Brady example tho my hair was cut in an updated shag. Unfortunately you have to be careful saying your hairstyle is a shag because some people classify hairstyles that look nothing like a shag, as a shag. So I used the hairstyle that people would be most likely to recognize. As a Rock Vocalist, I've probably sung more Joan Jett than you and no one in any nightclub has ever told me I looked like Mrs. Brady. ;)
