Divorce + empty-nest, and you continuing to live in a too-large home filled with 'yesterday' does not = happy, exciting new phase of your life. So good for you for making the tough decision and committing to all the mental and physical energy it takes to make such a huge change. (sound of applause!!!) I have to pay for house repairs and someone comes 3 times a year to trim back trees and shrubs. But my yard is small and I love being out there everyday. Fortunately I am healthy and love gardening. I can so relate when Angie said that gardening use to be her joy and now she thinks about it and she just feels tired. It is bittersweet that chapters in our lives close like that. But, I also think part of the tiredness comes from being single and taking care of the big house. My husband use to take care of so many things that are now all my responsibility to you have less energy left over for hobbies.

    • @kimberlybellefontaine1215
      @kimberlybellefontaine1215 3 года назад +1

      You are soooo right! I completely agree with you about the tiredness. Two yrs ago, I went through a rough divorce (aren’t they all?🥺) after 21 years of marriage. And even though my ex-husbands job (commercial airline pilot) took him away from home a lot during all those years of marriage, and I had the majority of responsibility for all things from raising the kids to taking care of the house, still, after he was gone and it was just me and the kids, just the realization that I was now solely responsible for EVERYthing myself and no longer had even just backup support was tough, not gonna lie. When you’re a single homeowner of a fairly large home with kids still living at home, there’s always something that has to be done. ALWAYS. And yes, it can indeed wear on you and cause fatigue. Absolutely.

    • @kimberlybellefontaine1215
      @kimberlybellefontaine1215 3 года назад

      @Charley Mack yes, I have seen that movie! But I don’t remember that particular line. Wow, it couldn’t be more true. And you’re absolutely right .. most ppl assume a divorce is just a divorce. Not that I was ever expecting or looking for pity .. but unfortunately, no one will ever understand the losses and emotions surrounding divorce unless they experience it themselves .. and I wouldn’t wish it upon ANYone. Yes, we’re always told “hey, look at it as a great “opportunity”to (fill in the blank here .. make a new life for yourself, discover yourself, RE-discover yourself, take up a hobby, travel, redecorate(!), etc). “. Sometimes it’s almost absurd what I hear lol. We’re expected to simply push years or decades of marriage, along with life as we know it, behind us and “move on” as if we hadn’t just lost almost everything - our marriage, family unit, the most significant other in our life (spouse), all our hopes & dreams for our future as a married couple and as a family, our lifestyle, financial stability, many times our homes & everything familiar & dear to us, and even sometimes our very children. And all because someone else made the choice to leave, or betrayed us, or stopped loving us or stopped being committed to the marriage or made the marriage toxic, unhealthy, and/or abusive or otherwise impossible to remain in. There are just so many losses involved in a divorce that it’s almost impossible to list all of them. And you’re right .. that one movie line is pretty validating. I’ll have to watch it again for maybe the 4th time. It’s a great movie. I remember how much I cried the first time I saw it .. and how much if not more I cried all the following times I watched it. It’s funny that I don’t recall that line though .. especially because it’s so terribly spot on ..

    Such a beautiful 'historic' home. I so understand how you're feeling about gardening being tiring. I moved into a villa (condo) community after living 24 yrs in a 2 story, 4brm house with big yard and pool. At first I felt really displaced. But then fell in love with a smaller home, no grass cutting, snow shoveling, etc. I still pot flowers for my deck, front and back landscape. It's just not nearly as tiring. What a beautiful old home. And huge. In Germany, houses are much smaller. I always marvel at things like mudrooms and laundry rooms and walk-in closets. Not to mention the giant kitchens everyone seems to have and all those bedrooms.
    I can see, how maintaining all of that plus a large garden would be a lot of work, though. How do women do that, while raising kids and often working at least part time? I don't think, I would have the energy.
    Hope your move goes well and you settle in quickly!

    The only home I ever owned was sold in 2006. It was a corner townhome. Perfect size for my husband and I. What I miss most is my garden. (3 sides I worked on effortlessly) Used to come inside after hours upon hours, covered in dirt, and so happy.
    Your beautiful, historic, and large home is quite a treat for the senses I am sure. And the outside area is truly a magical playground. Good wishes to the new owners, and more importantly, all best wishes your way Angie as you downsize and let go of some burdens. New, modern, condo living isn't so bad. I am very surprised that the realtor didn’t suggest painting the entire inside of the house a neutral color. Especially these beautiful old homes. My cousin also owns an old home like this with about 10 fireplaces, and when they were considering putting it on the market they told her that first of all dark colors are very out. Of style and she painted the entire inside of the home with a neutral color and suggested adding accents of colors with pillows and drapery. Well to make a long story short after they updated the kitchen and did all the painting she feel back in love with her old home and brought it back to its glory days. Staying true to the homes history. I have to say the home is stunning. Thank you for sharing your home and its history with us. I wish you all the best in your new place. Every time I visit I feel I’m home again.. my mom kept so much of our stuff in our old bedrooms.. So many memories .. Your hone is absolutely beautiful, the tour was perfect .. Wish you and your family all the best in your new hone.. New adventures await ❤️

      @@AngieHotandFlashy SO TRUE about the garden and lawn maintenance. We, too, had a family home - 1986 to 2018 - we moved across the country (an only grandchild can do that to a person) & bought a modern townhome with a tiny yard. Never looked back, never once miss the upkeep of the gardens and lawn. Plus, we moved from Wisconsin so had lots of snow (MUCH less here, in the Pacific Northwest, although climate's changing out here, too). BEST OF LUCK. LOVED THE TOUR

    So special! In my experience, it's rare for older houses to have original house features that are intact. I've lived in a few New England houses where the fireplaces were boarded up and often the house had been divided up into apartments. It is wonderful you've kept the original features. They are super sweet!

    What a beautiful house. I grew up with a baby grand piano in our living room. It took up half the room. There were seven kids and none of us knew how to play the piano. I think it came from my dad’s parents house. My mom gave it to my cousin’s husband, who was a great piano player. Your house is much bigger than the one I grew up in.

    Wow Angie. What a beautiful home. Full of wonderful memories raising your family. I'm thinking;" how's Angie going to leave this gorgeous home?!" But you are. As did I 3 months ago. My family home, my first home where even one of my five children was born in, is gone. Forty years I lived there. I too loved my garden. Fishpond, water lilies flowering everyday....BuI sold it 3 months ago. For me the transition has been monumental. The amount of things, treasures I'd accumulated in forty years, most of which I had to relinquish. I bought a smaller place for my two daughters to live in. I moved in with my friend, and this has all been huge. I wish you every success in the sale of your home. And every blessing as you moved forward into a new life and abode. Be gentle on yourself. 💜🧡💜

    Hey, Angie, I missed you last week! Yeah, I hear you, tired. My gardens have gone to the weeds, the perennials have to fight for themselves. Too bad spouse doesn't want condo living. I could totally see myself in a modern condo. I used to go out there with a pickax and have at it, bending the earth to my will. Never again.

      I agree, it's a shame b/c it is in good working condition. It is great for someone who wants it for the vintage charm, but it is not suitable for a child who is learning to play or an accomplished player - it won't hold a tune, and the action doesn't go fast enough to keep up with an accomplished pianist. They were not made as fine instruments, but very useful for family entertainment or a ladies tea time.

    I was born in MA so it was wonderful to see the breezy, lush outdoors ~ something you just don't get in Calif. Loved the house tour too .. I was just fascinated with each room and the fireplace with the brick oven. And speaking of tired .. as we age, you sure don't want to deal with three flights of steps. So as I could feel your sadness of leaving such a beautiful house, your condo is a great move. Onto a new chapter in your life!

    Beautiful home! I can tell you filled it with lots of love. Older homes have personality, we grew up in an old home on Long Island, built in the mid 1700s that bordered an apple orchard. Servants rooms, hidden closets - nooks n' crannies. Expensive to maintain, but great fun for a bunch of us kids to play hide n' seek. We had an old piano, statuary out front. Best wishes to you in the new home!

    It's always so heart wrenching leaving your memories behind. I'm selling my house also, but this house not only has joy, but tragedy & loss also, so I'm not so sad to see it go. I have found two lovely bungalows next door to each other. So I bought them both. I will be living in one & renting the other. I love the little red bungalow with it's covered front porch. Lovely flowering dogwood tree midway between the house & sidewalk. Original wood floors. Smaller, cozier, and less maintenance and upkeep. I loved it the minute I saw it. Always loved it driving by, but had never seen the inside. It just spoke to me. It's walkable to downtown, shops, antique stores, and restaurants. I feel lifted. I pray you feel the same about your new home & you will be very happy there. XOXO

I loved this because I grew up in the 60's in a home and neighborhood very much similar here in San Diego, CA, beautiful vintage homes as yours...Halloween and Christmas looked just like postcards !! Bet yours did too especially with the snow there!!! Your home would easily go for 2 million here in Southern California!!! You and yours did a beautiful touch to many areas...man, that's a big home! YES, gorgeous yard I can and do appreciate, being semi retired as a hortorculturist and landscape designer, loving what I do working still 2 days, so NOT bad, after losing my husband 10 years ago from a fatal fall 😪. One day will do exactly what you are doing and down size from my house. Your yards looks breath taking, mama and baby robins and all. Your fur babies have had a lovely, huge yard!!!! Your pool looks so pretty with all the green and ornimental color. Your 2 pups WILL be fine and adapt greatly with a smaller space in your modern condo....all they need is YOU 🐕🦮💕. By the way, I know you'd be happy for me...I had to say goodbye to my beautiful female English Yellow Labrador 15 months ago, my heart's been in million pieces...but...Im over the moon, Im bringing home my new little male English Yellow Labrador, my little polar bear baby in late September, early October!!!!!!!! Its going to be a lot of work by myself this time raising a puppy alone but I CAN DO IT!!!! Anyway dearest Angie you are quite the accomplished woman !!! It WILL be tough saying goodbye as you close those front doors for the last time. Im so happy though for you moving on, to your new chapter in life, where there will great new "firsts" such as hitting 1000,000 subscribers, seeing your daughters complete their education, the one becoming a doctor- Dermatologist, the other, becoming very successful as welI....weddings, son in laws, babies, etc!!!!!! Thank you, Angie, for showing us your beautiful antique home. It is lovely. Wow, the staircase is really steep, can't go up there with too many drinks in you. ;-) The yard is absolutely beautiful. Yes, I can see you missing that wonderful space. But I know what you mean about it making you tired just thinking about the amount of work it takes to maintain it. We also have a big yard (well for eastern MA, not Mid Western standards) and now that I just turned 67, I really don't care about it anymore, it makes both my husband and me tired thinking about maintaining and shoveling our lot. We think it is time to move to a townhouse condo and have someone else do the yard and the shoveling, but quite frankly, in Massachusetts there are not that many affordable condos for seniors. I think we are stuck here until we need assisted living. :-( I just had to put my beloved 18 year old cat down last week, he was suffering from dementia, so I just want to throw everything out and start new, a fresh start somewhere else, without all the old memories surrounding me. Just get rid of most of the stuff I have accumulated through my years here and start a new chapter, as you are doing. Both our parents have passed and I inherited most of my parents' things (my brother didn't want anything) and some of my mother-in-laws things. I just feel like donating everything and getting a new home and new things, like you are doing. Good luck in your new home. I look forward to seeing it and you in it, and enjoying your new life. :-)

    I'm a year older than you, and 3.5 yrs ago when my l/t relationship broke up, I left the big house on 1/3 of an acre, and bought a 2 bdrm condo, and especially after a lifetime of taking care of other people, it's the best thing I've ever done. Now it's just me and my 2 little dogs, and I'm really good with that. When I moved in, I jettisoned almost everything except a few small antique-y things I love, and the Ikea Kivik sofa I used when I staged my old house. I can clean up the new place in less than half an hour, and if/when anything not inside my front door needs attention, I just email the HOA management company, and it's off my to-do list and onto someone else's.

In Plymouth, America's Hometown, when I moved back to Hingham to be closer to family with my kids after my husband passed. I had 6 bedrooms, but very cut up, steep staircases anfd skinny hallways, like a maze. Now have open concept. Big difference. Thank you for sharing your lovely historic home with us. Wow what a beauty! Our friends that sold their 3 story home in Evanston, Illinois said the 3rd story used to be the maids’ quarters. We used to stay on the 3rd floor when we went for a visit and it was a work out, especially if you seemed to forget things and had to go up and down over and over! I’m sure it is bittersweet to leave behind so many happy memories, but the maintenance on a place like that - yikes! As an empty nester myself, feeling like the mama robin. So wishing happiness in your next phase of life, Angie! You deserve the best.
