    This is not the typical furniture only created for one space we usually see on this channel. This is an apartment with realistic furniture many people can afford and have easy access to. It shows what you can do to a space that has a good base without stripping it completely. Maybe the nearly renter-friendly version of the other videos on this channel. 😂

      I agree. Whilst I love the designs featured on this channel, they rarely feel accessible to those of us who couldn’t afford to pay for an architect/interior designer to design and construct these interiors.

      I agree with the OP & @bedbug. They used furniture/ fixtures which can be bought by us "mere mortals", like IKEA upper cabinets for the kitchen, the sofa-bed looks like something from IKEA or similar, same with the bed, dining table & movable kitchen island. I liked how they all put the pieces together to create a warm & inviting space.

      Thank you so much The lounge chair in the living room is designed by my husband Jeff as part of his House of Antwi African homeware collection and made in Brooklyn, and the arch chair in bedroom is locally sourced as well. Otherwise the sofa bed is from Article and dining chairs from TJ Maxx - so I would say a balance in artisanal, locally sourced furniture and some of the high street brands. 🧡🛖

    This home seems so warm, calming, and loved. It also looks very livable, realistic, and not overly renovated/designed. I would not change a thing (except maybe add some plants to the outdoor terrace). I wish pocket doors were a standard feature in American homes. They save so much space. The furniture looks very comfy. I also adore the rounded edges and curves everywhere. They definitely soften the space. Bravo!! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

The earth tones truly make the space a warm and serene place to be in. I really love the African stool in the corner of the living room with the flowers on top - what a solid piece of heritage to keep in your home! The only feedback I have is the Japanese coffee table. For this space, I think an end table on each side of the couch makes more sense in terms of flow and usability. If it were mine, I would remove the work desk in the bedroom and work from the dining-room or kitchen table just to keep work out of my mind when I am trying to get to sleep.
    Again, as NTS usually does, the lights are _described_ as 'warm,' but we don't get to see them lit, which I understand is probably an issue when filming, but I think in some cases would help flesh out the spaces shown and how they look at night.

      I love the way they designed this place, but yeah I agree with you. The woods and the light fixtures and maybe the terracotta, other than that I don't really see much of a African vibe. Even the wood, African woods are hard and dark and these woods are more bright, which work very well for a small space. @@OyinAntwi Such a list of cities! I completely understand the need to keep things to a level where what you have is what you need. I am just so used to seeing minimalism that is cold or cool, even with woods.
      Your place is much more inspirational because I love warmth, and I think what struck me is that you do have things where it is important. For example in your kitchen cupboard use - so many! Lovely things kept, but not intruding.

    I still can’t get over that Bedford-Stuyvesant is a nice neighborhood these days. When I was in my late teens and early twenties it was not too unusual to hear gunshots at night. I’m very glad people are making it a wonderful neighborhood to live in and this is a terrific example of that (as mind-bending as it is for me).

      So my husband Jeff was born here in BedStuy and raised in NYC and he talks my ear off about this 😅 I do the same about Peckham in London - like man, these neighborhoods have changed!! But now living in Brooklyn for the last 13 years myself since Grad School, I realize it boils down to the block associations and local governments that ‘change’ the neighborhoods. Even in my 13 years here (let alone you, who remember it from teenagehood) I am incredibly proud to see the positive safety, urban planning, and community engagement initiatives that come from joining your block association. I am a proud member of mine and always promote it, especially if you’re buying in Brooklyn 🙏🏾🧡

    Really nice space, especially the main living / dining area. Genius to use the bat window for the table. Excellent use of warm wood in the feature wall and as accents in furniture. The warm and earthy colours and the natural looking fabrics would be what I would link to a West African inspired approach-with the clean lines of Japanese design and the appeal to light and white of Scandinavian. This design found the point where those 3 influences can successfully converge.

    I am African and the title drew me in but all I see about the Afro is just the beads on the table, is all. Mahn I had high hopes for this because I love Scandinvian and Japanese styles, I was so waiting to see the fusion with African elements, escp once she said she's Nigerian coz West-African cultural elements are profound. Oh well...

    • @deborahkemunto1433
      @deborahkemunto1433 4 месяца назад +2

      My bad, the beads are not even African, they look much more like what either Indian or Budhist monks would use because we don't use have such rope or twines with our beads, and West African beads are mostly colored, very rarely wooden. The only thing African about the house is themselves, and I guess that can count.
      Actually even for the rest of the style it's much more of a well-designed space with furniture pieces that have elements of Japanese and Scandinavian(at this rate I doubt if I have actually seen anything like that again-the style is much more of modern minimalistic than anything afro japandi, sigh). And yes again it is a well done space but it lacks the elements in terms versatility and innovative storage solutions that this channel is good for. Well, it's a well designed small space, I guess that will pass

    Hi, several people have already commented with the question about whether the rooftop terrace is included in the square footage. As someone who enjoys watching NTS and finds it fun to compare how big different places appear, I would love to better understand how NTS comes up with that number in general. After some quick googling, I can see that there are some standards: for example, closets are included in the total area, but "unfinished" spaces and spaces with height less than 7 feet are not included. However, these seems to be US standards, and this is an international channel.
    Can anyone with knowledge of this please comment? Thank you!
    By the way, I love how this couple added storage space and other details to make their apartment more functional! :)

      @OyinAntwi 4 месяца назад

      @@rolandcharriez7631 yes! Mixed feelings and my husband I talk about this often - growing up in London and now living Brooklyn, there’s this dichotomy of feelings I have where I’ve seen these traditionally working class and oftentimes historically black and brown neighborhoods with beautiful brownstones, limestones, and row homes being affordable now only to the super wealthy and oftentimes white homebuyers. As you know, these row homes in Bed Stuy now go for upwards of $2million and may STILL need renos, and only they really are able to afford the restoration of the original architecture and design. While the supply and demand issue for the working class is leading to developers converting one row home to a 4-6unit condo building where we now can only afford a piece of the pie and do our best with it to add character and design. So thank you for knowing this is worth recognizing how we can still bring beautiful designs even in these smaller footprints of what was 🧡🛖
