I've always been natural but it wasn't until about.. 6 years ago that I truly started learning how to take care of my curls. And of course everyone and their momma used and recommended shea mositure. As a broke highschool student it was a bit hard to get price wise but i did invest in some products here and there or was gifted stuff by family. And at first there were quite a few products i liked, especially the JBCO line. BUTTT then they decided to play games and switch up their ingredients and labels, NOT tell customers, and then when confronted about the change, basically deny it. Ill never forget putting the JBCO shampoo in my hair and being sooo shook and confused when instead of moisture and slip.. immediate dryness and tangles... I literally cried cause it caused my hair to tangle and knot up and i ended up with a lot of breakage because of it.. i tried the matching conditioner to help it but that was just as bad... and the leave in?? it smelled different and was super runny. It was then that I read the ingredient lists and noticed they did not match some of the older bottles I still had. I stopped buying their stuff after and have seen their ingredient quality decrease since then.
I used to love SheaMoisture for my curly hair but for the last almost year.. more and more of my hair is falling out and nothing in my life has changed. I'm still a young adult and have very healthy hair (I have a friend who got fascinated by how strong it was when she touched and tugged it and loved the texture). I have to find an entirely new brand now.. I have no issues outside of just fall out which is bizarre. I used to have no issues with the product using it a couple years prior and it being my main brand I use (I only use the shampoo and conditioner and do not use other products in my hair). I'm guessing my head is NOT liking the formula change..
@@JohnIsaacXIV I did! I only wash my hair once a week (unless it gets dirty/greasy from whatever I did that day) with Design Essentials Oat Protien & Henna deep cleansing shampoo with Design Essentials "Natural hair" Agave & Lavender conditioner. I've been so happy to see some of my hair growing back.
Thank you. I enjoyed and appreciate the information you shared on the Shea Moisture company. I cut off all my hair June 2020 (over 20 yrs with locs at various lengths) and with that came the search for chemical-free products. Lush Cosmetics, Ogx, and Pantene were the products I used, enjoyed, and found effective over the years. However, I discovered the "Think Dirty" app which shows me the chemical content in products. That discovery eliminated all the products I previously used and most of the "new" products for curly hair as well, except for Shea Moisture. With every search in every category, they come up as the company with the least chemicals in their product. I would love to try some of the competitors because everything in the line does not work as well as I would like (as mentioned in your video the Curl Enhancing Smoothie does almost nothing for my 4b-c hair). I wish some of the new curly hair companies would consider the chemical content they add to these products.
oh nooo, I love shea moisture but I also noticed a change in the products since I started using them. It was subtle, but even the fragrances changed. I thought at one point my product had went bad, but once I bought more it was clear something had changed. So sad to know they are no longer Black owned.
I remember the switch in the formulas I was so sad. It made my hair tangled and dry. I was okay with Shea moisture cheap and nice. Then the white women came out with the commercial knowing their user base was black. Shame.
Its really sad what greed can do. It seems like its quantity over quality of ingredients now. It stinks when a succesful black owned business gets bought out. The products just aint the same amymore and im sad to say as SM was my first ever introduction with natural hair products. Now its like it just sits in my hair. The quality ingredients just are substituted and watered down with cheap fillers. I will only buy black owned hair care from now on. 🎉
I live in the Middle East. Shea moisture is actually quite popular here for curly girls. Not necessary black girls. When looking for curly hair products the main brands that I can find are cantu, maui then shea moisture. The two 1st ones can be find in the supermarkets while shea moisture you have to actually order online or go to a special shop. However it is the most popular.I’m in a Face book beauty page where most off the girls are not black, and a lot off them talk about this brand. Also when I travel to places like the UK, it’s one off the only curly hair brands available in the big shops equivalent to CVS. Off cause you can find all the other brands at the hair shops. Just wanted to let you know how they are doing abroad.
I was done with them when they discontinued the yucca and plantain line, literally the only products that worked excellently for my hair. They recommended that the coconut hibiscus line was just as good, it does nothing for my hair, I wish another company had this formula because I’d buy it in a heartbeat. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!
Instead of wasting money on all of these lines that no one cares for, they should take special orders for discontinued lines and produce only the quantities ordered. Win for us. Win for them.
My finacee used to use Shea Moisture back in the early 2010s and loved the soaps especially. But right before the brand sold out to yt owned corporate interests she said the forumla in the Black soap felt more "gritty" and irritated her skin. I cannot imagine her using that now :/
I went back natural again in 2008 (for the third and final time). Because I discovered early on that my hair hated shea butter, I never really got into the Shea Moisture hair products. Anyway, I got back into a groove and no longer really paid attention to products and what was going on in the product world. Mainly because I got a bit lazy over the past couple of years, I've recently started watching videos again. Based on watching newer RUclipsrs, I've noticed that many of the products / product lines that were in the forefront from 10+ years ago, such as Kinky Curly, Qhemet Biologics, Oyin Handmade, no longer seem to be in vogue.
Thank you for this. I've been using the coconut and hibiscus line from shea moisture for years. I don't use the curl enhancing smoothie, which is from that line, but i use their shampoo and conditioner regularly. within the last few weeks, something happened. the shampoo doesn't lather, my curl pattern is getting looser on my already 2c/3a hair, and my hair looks insanely frizzy. so my digging took me to this video. has anyone else noticed the same thing? is this recent? i saw you took photos of the old and new ingredients, but did this happen in like 2018 and i'm just dumb? i mean, i'm caucasian, but i buy products frequently from the natural hair section because they just work better for me and i'm trying to do a curly girl method type thing.
Was looking through the comments and saw this. So I have 3a/3b curls and for yearssss since 2014 I was using Shea moisture specifically the raw shea butter shampoo and conditioner, and my Kinky Curly leave in. That’s it. I recently was reusing it all after having my hair in a pony for a year, and I instantly noticed my hair was incredibly stripped on my roots, my hair had a ton of wet frizz and my hair was much looser (wouldn’t spring up and clump). I no longer will be using Shea moisture products, they definitely changed their formula and everything I’ve been using recently is horrible. Super sad, they were my holy grail product for 7 years.
I remember when they only sold Lotion, shampoo, and liquid black soap back in 1999. The Lotion made the entire brand successful. We would sell out as quickly as we stocked it for months....truly a great product back then.
Great video girl. Thanks for the info. I always wonder why people wasn't using it like that anymore. But I still use them. Everyone makes mistakes. Hopefully it will pass. 🤷♀️💯❤
Mielle is no longer Black owned either. This is becoming a trend. I don’t begrudge someone their coins, Shea Moisture truly shot themselves in the foot with that commercial and changing their formula too often. The thing is, SM hopped into an even larger pool of competitors. Not smart. They should have gone down the road of creating a different line of products like Pantene did.
Their REFORMULATION sucks: I’m a male. Been using the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner for a while now. In my last purchase recently: I noticed that the shampoo does not have that natural, rich, awesome smelling, white and creamy consistency anymore. They’ve changed it to a shiny, clearer and watered-down formula that really feels like any other shampoo out there. But the worst thing is: IT’S MAKING MY SCALP ITCH LIKE CRAZY. The original formula was the complete opposite: it used to be so invigorating and moisturizing. They have failed to realize that they’re actually dealing with chemicals here. That those ingredients actually affect people’s pH balancing and levels. They think it’s a game that will go un-noticed. I’M GOING TO RETURN THE ITEM: and I will not buy it again if they don’t change it.
It was the formula changes and discontinuing lines randomly for me.. They have a lot of good products, the deep conditioners are the BEST. The only lines I ever use now are JMBCO and Power Greens.
My mom also used Royal Crown, ( yes, Royal Crown Hair Dressing, lol), Dixie Peach Hair Pomade and Sulfur 8 on me and my sister hair. We had long healthy hair We never had a problem with our hair until we decided we wanted a perm like the other girls and that's when the trouble started (those chemicals). We're both in our fifties now, we are both naturals and we will never go back to a perm, never. My daughters are in their twenties and they both use Blue Magic, DooGro and Sulfur 8 mixed together, their hair is long, thick and healthy. Sometimes old school is the best!!!
I'm an old school YT viewer who went natural in 2010. At one point I used SM products from head to toe. They were my first favorite brand! While I can understand that the business wanted to expand, they were very sloppy in its execution. That and changing the ingredients in beloved products hurt SM's brand.
The Raw extra_moisturizing transitioning milk is the only thing and shea butter that works for my high porosity, dry, brittle, kinky hair, and i have just called them today asking if that product has been cancelled, and guess what they have cancelled it.
I’m trying the miracle leave in right now and I might use the manukau and honey yogurt leave in again, but my main concern is the hair loss. I had so much hair loss when using the products that I’m not sure if it was the shampoos and conditioner or if it was all of the products. I’m currently using the Brigeo brand and I noticed I’m having hair fall again so I’m like does my hair not like natural products or am I sensitive to some ingredients? I’m sorry for this long rant, to whoever is reading this, I just had to get this off my chest XD
They don't work, over priced and I am still trying to figure out where his grandma got the name Tucker. May be she was one of the slaves that went back to Liberia after leaving the US. I am not sure...I just have always felt if someone makes a product we will support it. In this case they made multi millions and we are still looking for the right product.
I recently had starting using sheamoisture, as I was looking for ethical, quality products to use on my hair. This was a brand that came up time and time again in my searches. I had no idea about their fail campaign, even to me it's cringe-y. Maybe they needed to boost their sales in order for Unilever to buy them out? 🤷 I will continue trying other brands.
Do you think this brand is ok to use for a Hispanic or is it better for African hair. I’ve mostly seen black peoples use there products with tougher hair, more curly hair and frizzy hair. I’m Hispanic white so my hair is in a mix with mainly curly and a little wavy and straight but for the most it’s a curly hairstyle so even with mainly black people I hear them saying it’s to much protein and I feel like this is gonna effect me even worse but I don’t know I used the product once and I left my hair smelling nice and feeling nice but I don’t know if this is for white people
I just bought some product because of my curly hair having problems, I'm just trying a little something new but years ago I had heard it was (the company) sold to a mormon. Who ran against Obama in the election the 1st time. I will not mention his name here. So I was never interested in buying the products after seeing, she had sold to a Caucasian guy. But after seeing this video I wish I wouldn't have even bought the current product that I have. It's crazy to think she sold to a Caucasian. Where his religion teaches black hate, that black people is a curse. I was born into Mormonism but my mom had no idea what they were teaching. I am a woman of color and I can remember when they taught that black skin was a curse I was humiliated in front of everyone in my class. This is sadly their core belief I was a young girl very young taught this but thankfully now I know the truth!
They sold their line. Not sure why anyone would want to save a sell out (sorry not sorry). Unilever changing SheaMoisture ingredients everytime I purchase a new bottle. I have two bottles I purchased recently and it's a big change in the ingredients (I must have got lucky and found an old formula still on the shelf). My hair is currently breaking off thanks to the new formula. Yes we was lucky to experience high quality natural products in the early 2000s that seems to no longer exist.
The Founder of shea moisture is Original from SIERRA LEONE. West Africa. population of 7 million people....I want to thank everyone who have bought this product...I love the product. it works for me...my people if something is good for your hair stick with it....we all make mistakes....let us support ourselves as human being. Thank you all.
And allllll shampoos and products have changed through the years . But the last few years ALOT. Because they supposedly took the bad stuff out. And even though we do not want to use the bad stuff / chemicals and ingredients we still liked the older products with these things in them . Across the board , regardless of race. Funny 😆 they broke it down in this way.
Appealing to the white demographic? I’m white and used to love their products. There was a period of around 6 years where I couldn’t afford to purchase their products, and I’m just discovering the changes now after wanting to repurchase my old favorites.
Wait, so the issue here is sheamoisture needs to expand their brand but they tried that and people whined about them wanting a diverse customer base and they're surprised they're dwindling away in popularity? God forbid Caucasians use their products, right? Maybe we should just go back to the days where white and black people can only purchase certain items since some of you all want segregation so bad. I was a fan of theirs until the formulas changed and they apologized for wanting me as a customer. 🙄
Alison I had no problem with the commercial because I’m young and new to Shea moisture. But it seems there has to be a middle ground for wanting a diverse customer base. Bring in new customers without forgetting the ppl who were here first. Ppl want representation, and that’s not what Shea moisture showed. Basically a representation of all hair types and not the ones you see all the time.
Shut up Alison you guys have 5 f**** aisles dedicated to your hair needs and always have since the birth or should I say Hijacking of this country.. I don't know if they can come back to the shine from which they originated, but think they can still keep producing (and stop taking my favorite products off of the shelf ;) )
Did you find any new curly hair products? I'm in the same situation as you.
This works great for my low porosity, super thick and curly/wavy hair. If you also have low porosity hair, it may work great for you too! I love that I don't have to use a lot at all to get the job done plus they aren't super expensive. With them I haven't had to use extra products in my hair either and I noticed SIGNIFICANTLY LESS hair fall in a single use of them in the shower. I've been so happy to see some of my hair growing back.
instinctively threw away all my shea not cause they were bought but bc the formulas have changed and results not the same
Yeah inthink she is specifically talking about within the black community
I was done with them when they discontinued the yucca and plantain line, literally the only products that worked excellently for my hair. They recommended that the coconut hibiscus line was just as good, it does nothing for my hair, I wish another company had this formula because I’d buy it in a heartbeat. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!
Instead of wasting money on all of these lines that no one cares for, they should take special orders for discontinued lines and produce only the quantities ordered. Win for us. Win for them.
@@KC-ed1dj Exactly!!
My finacee used to use Shea Moisture back in the early 2010s and loved the soaps especially. But right before the brand sold out to yt owned corporate interests she said the forumla in the Black soap felt more "gritty" and irritated her skin. I cannot imagine her using that now :/
Even back in 2013-14 shea moisture was king. I used the curl enhancer smoothie for my waves
I loooove Shea moisture! I have very thick and frizzy Hair.I Hope they come back with a lot of Succes !
I love Shea Moisture hair Dye but cant find it anywhere
It was the formula changes and discontinuing lines randomly for me.. They have a lot of good products, the deep conditioners are the BEST. The only lines I ever use now are JMBCO and Power Greens.
Before Shea moisture we had blue magic
Right. I just went back to old old school and my hair is THRIVING!
Me and my sons hair started falling out..
I fee like the old formula didn’t work for me at all. Since they changed, it seems that my hair has never been better 🤷🏽♀️
I still use it, but now they've added wax so I'm moving to Not Your Mothers and Curlsmith. Sad, their products do a fabulous job on my curls.
Wax?? Is that a bad thing? Also which products have wax now?
The Raw extra_moisturizing transitioning milk is the only thing and shea butter that works for my high porosity, dry, brittle, kinky hair, and i have just called them today asking if that product has been cancelled, and guess what they have cancelled it.
They really want to go out of business.
Dag, today is 12/01/21 and I see the difference. Well, I will have to find new products; not the same
I’m trying the miracle leave in right now and I might use the manukau and honey yogurt leave in again, but my main concern is the hair loss.
I guess to appear to the Masses, he had to have a European western name.
I was wondering what happened to their hair color system.
Did it work for you?
@@cfoster6804 yes, I love the Manuka mask. 😭 And the hemp leave in spray
The smoothie is very overrated 😵
So what hair products would you refer for 4a hair for a 6year old with hair down her back and not mixed
Is Shea moisture safe to use?
it has just got affordable in my island so it's all I use now 3B hair
I still use it. I have my favorites.
Can someone suggests good leave in for high porosity
I have not bought a SM product in 4 years. Mielle is next after catering to white women.
I just saw this video. I didn't know. I just bought some shea moisture lol 🙄
My hair fell out badly… Cancel them
Kinky is curly just saying it isn’t different
Thats the problem with yall you come into black spaces giving your opinions where it really doesn't matter, you didn't even know wtf shea moisture was at one point because the products wern't originally made for your hair type, so go get you some "Pantene" which was originally made for yall and shut the hell up. Sheamoisture was originally MADE for and BUILT up by black people so this is a black issue between sheamoisture its "core base" .. Don't come up in here with that white entitlement that plaques your people and always has since modern humans existed. Yall are so obsessed with black culture you follow everything we do but will never admit it to yourselves, and if I'm lying you wouldn't even be in this comment section saying something slick when its a BLACK owned brand were discussing on a BLACK RUclips channel🤔🤫. So we shouldn't even be having a convo right now..Go do that in your own white space..
Girl...SHUT UP. You don't know what you're ranting about. That is not why black women got mad.
@@Deklectic You gave her that WORK!🤣🤣🤣
