    Dude...Terra literally takes care of a bunch of kids in the World of Ruin. Celes’s famed Opera Scene was literally rooted in trying to use her looks and voice to get Setzer’s attention. I think you got FFVI backwards man.

      Yeah, I was surprised at his take on this. Terra found love with the children. Fits the mother trope to a T. Not once did she ever seduce anyone lol, was even confused when Edgar hit on her.

    • @peachesandcream8753
      @peachesandcream8753 6 лет назад +10

      I think I see where he is coming from. Celes didn't want to be in the Opera because, in her words, she's "a former general and not an opera floozy". Just because everyone else wanted her to play the role to get Setzer's attention doesn't mean she wanted to, she had her pride to protect. She's also very wise, calm and level-headed while Terra is not. Terra on the other hand had her "coming into her own" story which fits her into the Seductress role, she became more assertive, confident and found her own direction in life instead of being ordered around by others.

      So the 'seductress' role isn't about being flirty and sleazy? Well I guess that makes sense, but broadening that role means that easily defining these characters as a single trope becomes more difficult. The video even seems to struggle to identify some of them or outright admit that the mother and seductress role can and does flip from time to time within these games. Or perhaps that was the assumption (or subtle point) of the game devs to link sexuality and nurture. Sexual awakening gives way to motherhood.

    • @verfluchteblume
      @verfluchteblume 6 лет назад

      James Varble I believe he made it pretty clear about how some were quite mixed in their roles, and just gave his opinion. And he definitely doesn't put seductress as being lustful and slutty type. Just more as the outgoing types from what I saw. So he's not entirely wrong in the categories he put each in by his standards. But I definitely agree more with you in their roles for that one.

      I think that Tifa is actually much more like a traditional Japanese wife type who let's Cloud do whatever he wants. I think he takes advantage of this because I have a feeling Aerith would put up with his emo bitch personality for about half of smug statement from Cloud before she says something. Kinda makes her look like the American empowered woman. I can almost guarantee Aerith x Cloud would of happened had she clasped the on coming Sephy sword!

      I think people are confused because of Advent Children! Aerith because she died became much more of a protective motherly figure, with Kadaj even confusing her with his mom during his last moments. Just as with Cloud's personality (from dorky to taciturn, due to his traumas), the way it was shown and emphasized had changed a lot from FF7 to AC.

    • @lilli7040
      @lilli7040 5 лет назад

      I honestly thought that Aerith and Tifa are very interchangeable with the seductress and mother. I know that Aerith and Tifa personality wise fit what Prez had said but when looking at AC, Aerith definitely brought that motherly side she had her, to protect things that were important to her~ Also Tifa is very obvious on her motherly side :) But I feel that inside, Tifa wanted to bring out that bit of seductress that Aerith brought out easily :) So either way is completely fine~ Yuffie can never be changed though ;)

    For FF5, I wouldn’t exactly say Krile’s playful, energetic, or erratic. She’s pretty reliable and comes through for your party, and when she joins is dealing with grief over her grandfather. In the ending, she is sad, afraid she’ll have to be alone forever, until the rest of the party surprises her.

    Quite an interessting video ! And i'm mostly agree with you... Except for VI. All Terra's arc is about protecting someone, and litterally accept her role and nature of mother. MOther of mobliz's kids, but also of the group. She is strong and use her power to protect people. Celes on the other side, while strong and quite independant, she need love from someone, and accept that she can love and be loved. She is confident in herself... most of the time, and is alawys describe as a fiersome warrior. More seductress in my opinion.

    Doesn't the book appear to be talking about 3 fundamental archetypes within a woman's psyche, rather than 3 distinct character types,
    and how they all need to come together to form a fully matured personality, similar to Jungs idea of the Id, Ego and the Super Ego.
    There are still innocence and mother traits present within a seductress, or innocence and seductress within the mother archetype.
    I think you fundamentally misunderstood the entire point of the story.

    • @jaredrich3012
      @jaredrich3012 6 лет назад +8

      While you’re correct, the trope (which the video is about) plays up the archetypes a bit more. It’s much easier to see earlier on, but around 8 it starts to get more complicated and reflective of what you said.
      I do think the video (while good) somewhat flawed, but it’s In the breakdown of how sex appeal is used. I think Pez scored it too heavily towards seductress, when the wife should be having a solid sex life as well (it’s a bad sign for a marriage if sex life breaks down, after all).

    • @kmay1621
      @kmay1621 6 лет назад +5

      I thought exactly the same. Doesn't this sort of prove that either these FF characters are one dimensional, or that a player's impression of them is one dimensional? Both of these are problematic.

    • @SobrietyandSolace
      @SobrietyandSolace 6 лет назад +6

      My exact thinking was that hopefully a video like this would highlight the (indeed problematic) fact that some of these characters are horribly one dimensional, and some aren't but some (particularly male) still get that linear, stereotyped impression of actually more complex characters. It's hinted at by the narrator stating that htey are pigeonholing characters into 'broad-sweeping generic categories' in a way they don't entirely see as justifiable but others might. The only issue is these characters' complexity has to be subtle enough as not to threaten certain players, but if it's so subtle that they don't notice, it won't make them reassess how they percieve these character and thus how they categorise women in real life.This is like a more diverse version of the virgin/whore dichotomy, which is less black and white, less extreme. It makes it harder for peopel, particularly men, to realise that whilst a woman might not necessarily be a literal virgin or literal whore, that aspects of her character and how she presents herself fall into the spectrum of those traits and thus illustrates the fact that women can be all things to varying degrees. It's easier to justify demonising the literal whore than it is to acknowledge that a 'good girl' can embrace her sexuality. It's too scary and difficult to comprehend and accomodate that. When it comes to fictional characters it's much better to picture your pur einnocent waifu as being forever predictable in her behaviour and thus she can never shock or disappoint you by 'acting out'.

    • @Krisenaa
      @Krisenaa 6 лет назад

      The idea is that even though they are initially three different personas of the same person, they can be split up and manifested as three different characters. They don't need to be one-dimensional, because you can flesh them out after you've split them up, while still making them retain the archetypes as their dominant traits.

    • @awakenow7147
      @awakenow7147 6 лет назад +1

      Little Wolf Taima I can see where you're coming from. Considering many of these games are made by men, it would stand to reason that the stories would be seen through a male lens. However, this is not the case for Final Fantasy in a lot of scenarios. Tifa, Rinoa, Yuna, Lightning, and Terra are huge examples of multi-faceted female characters who have spent time on multiple sides of the archetypal spectrum. In regards to "embracing sexuality", it is not a theme that is expressed very often within Final Fantasy stories. For example, the potential sexual pasts of both Tifa and Rinoa are merely hinted at, but they are of no importance to the overall story. Whether Tifa had sexual relations with 1 or 20 guys before the events of FFVII is not crucial to what the main story is trying to get across. Very few female FF characters are stereotypical "waifu" material, nor are they super sexually expressive women.
      The same could be said for male characters. Male characters are in fact multi-faceted and not bound by gender roles. For instance: Cloud has spent his entire life trying to prove that he is a hero...a real man. He create an image in his mind about what a "man" should be. A man "needs" to go to war. He "needs" to be a hero. He "needs" to save the girl. But what happens to Cloud? He doesn't become the warrior that he thought he would, he becomes a brainwashed pawn of Sephiroth, and he is saved by both Tifa and Aerith on multiple occasions(women). The entire crux of Cloud's development is that he does not need to fit the distorted image of what a "man" is. You can take foolish characters like Snow. His heroic acts get put on blast on multiple occasions.
      At the end of the day, we could choose to see Final Fantasy as a male-dominated series that provides narrow stereotypes of men and women. Or we could see Final Fantasy as simply a collection of stories in which different archetypes are used in different ways. Is there sometimes an unbalance? Sure. But that is natural. On a deeply subconscious level, both men and women are going to see each other in a certain way. There are going to be biases. There are going to be times when we "wish" that the other gender would act a certain way. We see this everywhere we go: People pleading for their GF/BF to be "different"....more archetypal perhaps. This cannot be stopped. We cannot truly control the thoughts and emotions that we have towards other people. We can only really decide how much attention we give such thoughts and emotions. Sometimes we are not aware that we can make that decision to shift our attention to something more wholesome, so our subconsciously programmed biases can seep out in how we treat and perceive others(gender etc). Its a constant balancing act and we can't expect everyone to "get it".

    This was a fun, creative and rather thought provoking video! I think u made some pretty astute observations of the FF Ladies. In particular w/ FFVII, FFVIII, FFXII and the FFXIIIs. Characters like Aerith and Tifa. Selphie and Rinoa and Quistis. Penelo and Ashe. And all the XIII gals, especially Lightning, not all fitting into the category they seemed to at first, or fitting into multiple categories. Such as Lighting being the character of mother/wench (lol) due to circumstance, but may actually be a seductive maiden at heart! Again, very cool video idea :)

    It gets interesting when you look at FFXIII when all the male characters also get this treatment.
    But the trope goes back even further to "Maiden, Mother, Crone".
    But seriously, you tend to get specific archetypes for the female characters as wel
    1. The immature commentator: The young character that acts either as the counter-culture perspective to the cast. They're often orphan as well of some sort.
    2. The love interest, who comes with idealism and is hugely centered on a the lead character's motivation
    3. The Mourner: Usually a character who is older, may have interest in the main character, but also has a background where she's lost a loved one, as well as a major disconnect with society either due to background or said loss.
    When you look at the cast of XIII, each of the male protagonists (Hope, Snow, Sahz) fits into these categories perfectly.
    1. Hope is the most negative person, and the first person to point out the counter arguments to everyone's motivation. Lost his mother.
    2. Snow is the ONLY character with a canon (acknowledged) love interest. He's the idealist, and inversely is motivated BY his love for Serah.
    3. Sahz is a widower, and the oldest character who not only loses his wife in the past, but has also lost his son essentially for the majority of the game, making him the most tragic character of party.

    This is such an interesting study of not just the characters of Final Fantasy and Japanese writing for character development but also the philosophy and psychology of past and current social trends and relative mindsets on the ideals and archetypes for how we see women. This was so well done, because there is definitely a parallel between the conception of 'The Three Faces of Eve' and the classic tropes for characters - even men too - in literature and media. It kinda of reminds me of the 'Hero's Journey' by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (a book that inspired the Star Wars trilogy too). Like Leia as well, Luke starts off innocent, naive and ignorant of the world (well the galaxies in his case) troubles and strife happening outside his safe little bubble. He eventually has the chance to become more but at the cost of losing his innocence - his aunt and uncle - just like Leia lost her whole home planet. By the second movie they're becoming more confident and experienced to be either a Hero or Villain. At the end of the third movie and also in the the current Star Wars movies, they are transitioning to the last stage of a War Veteran, Leader and Icon in their causes, looking after the younger generation or literally teaching them to become the next Heroes.
    I feel like there would be more dynamic in movies and games if characters were allowed to evolve as all three of the Innocent, Seductress and Parent figure. If not be all of these characters at once without it seeming like a mental disorder brought on by Multiple personalities. (Calling Lightning and Ashe a Stoic Wench was hilarious!) Though Lightning has more depth than most characters in FFXIII because she has played all three roles in the series and I think it's ironic how she wasn't a fan favorite in Japan but Serah who also has some character growth to her - was a fan favorite in Japan even from game #1 when she didn't do much except ignite the match the started the game. She only played the Innocent in that game and they automatically loved her. I'm confused.
    But the summary is: this was a great video of the philosophy of FF females characters and the three standard archetypes for women in literature/media, so thank you.

    For FF14, I guess you could do this in groups.
    Scions of the Seventh Dawn:
    Lyse - Child (though in Stormblood, she becomes more of a seductress)
    Y'shtola - Seductress (though has mother qualities)
    Minfilia - Mother
    Eorzean Alliance Leaders (easy):
    Nanamo - Child
    Merlwyb - Seductress
    Kan-E-Senna - Mother
    Far Eastern characters:
    Cirina - Child
    Yotsuyu - Seductress
    Yugiri - Mother
    And then there's Ishgard (I nominate Ysayle, Hilda and Lucia for this one) where I'm stuck... xD

    Interesting, it's kinda neat how this sort of works for so many of the games. I would venture to say with FF6 Terra can really embodies all 3 aspects of this trope. As she is a very innocent somewhat naive and meek individual at the beginning, awakens to her more psychical, wild Esper self later on, going completely nude and giving in to her uncontrollable power and becomes a motherly figure towards the end with her taking care of children, coming to terms with her own origin and taming her power.

    The amount of waffling and hem-hawwing you do in this video to enforce this framework indicates that 1) the series doesn't actually follow the trope very well without writing paragraphs of explanation. Tropes, if they apply, should be obvious since tropes play on intuitions by definition. And 2) the "3 faces of Eve" itself is a tired and outdated trope that doesn't really describe female characters or female humans for that matter. A character who is solidly ONLY one of the three for the entire story is a boring character---hell, even in the original film, Eve embodied all three archetypes. And that's to say nothing of the fact that you had to invent a 4th archetype to even begin categorizing some of them. It's clear that there are more than 3 types of female characters and characters flow between roles all the time as part of their natural development and the progression of the story.

    I'm so glad you put Aeris (I'm sticking to this version no matter what anyone says!) in the Seductress role because that's where she firmly belongs! Squeenix have seem to have forgotten what her personality is like outside of the original FF7, they've made her into "The Innocent" crossed with "The Mother" role when she was never there in the first place. Aeris, even as a child, was seen to be free-spirited, confident and independent so I have no idea why they decided to change her completely into this "holier than thou" figure who is softly spoken and angelic; that's Tifa's role!
    This video was hilarious and had me laughing a lot. I was wondering when your next video was coming out because it's been a while.

    • @Xeldiane
      @Xeldiane 6 лет назад

      I think that's what's great with Tifa and Aerith, they can belong in all three categories because they are such complex and well developed characters! Tifa is innocent in Crisis Core, Seductress in the early game and Motherly from midgame to end. Aerith seems seductive at first especially in Crisis Core, innocent at some points, and ends up holy mother figure because of her death.

      @@Xeldiane I wouldn't agree that Aeris becomes the Mother because of her death. She still had the aura of mystery around her so she still stays in the Seductress role. Tifa is the Motherly figure from start to end because of her relationship with the other characters, she instantly takes the "make sure you come home safe. Don't hurt yourselves" stance, and when she dresses up to seduce Don Corneo, she seems like she is doing it in a mature way unlike Aeris who treats it like a game.

    Disagree with VI, simply because Terra's growth came from love as a mother rather than as a romantic love which Celes fits very well. Terra is more analogous to Lenna and Celes to Faris so it should rate them the same way.

    To be honest, in regards to FFVI, I wouldn't be opposed to putting Relm in the Seductress category, too. She's certainly confident and flirty enough. And Terra had moments of being in each category, with Motherly taking the fore-front in the World of Ruin.

    Watching the Lost In Translation of FF7 I can definitely see Aerith being more of the seductress in the Japanese translation than in the English. Her sassiness and self confidence doesn't come across quite as well in the English release.

    The mother is ALWAYS the love interest or lead character. It's the only archetype that's considered "worthy" of success/happiness/a happily ever after. The seductress is just a male gaze fan-service lust object and the innocent is comedic relief. Neither are ever taken seriously.

  • @uncletimmy6092
    @uncletimmy6092 6 лет назад

    I think with a lot of the characters part of their character development is their journey from one to the other, or navigating those aspects of their personality/identity. The innocent is definitely the most easy to pigeon-hole for most of the games though.

    1. Celestial weapons - going into depth on the insane difficulty of acquiring them, maybe ranking them by difficulty or discussing which ones meant the most to you to finally earn.
    2. Taking every playable character from FFX and comparing him/her to their most similar character from another FF game. I think a Seymour - Sephiroth comparison video would be cool.
    3. Most interesting npc ranking video from FFX
    4. Ideas or what you'd like to see if there ever happens to be a FFX-3
    5. Ways FFX could of been better. Which characters could of had more dialogue or a different arch? How an open world would of changed the game. Where did you want to see more or less detail? Which parts of the game did you want to be longer or shorter?

  • @lukew1383
    @lukew1383 Год назад

    I'd say this works well for 4, 5, 7, and 9. You've got slam dunk seductresses in (older) Rydia, Farris, Aerith, and Garnett, and slam dunk mothers in Rosa, Rena, Tifa, and Freya. The child character is almost always easy to place as is shown in the video, but for the characters in 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 13 the "seductress" and "mother" role is never dominated by one person. Terra and Celes, Tifa and Aerith, Lulu and Yuna, and Fran and Ashe really do a tightrope walk on that line between the two. And I think that's a good thing. It makes for deeper characters and a better story.

    Honestly, I'd swap Terra and Celes around in your choices. Terra as the mother and Celes as the seductress. Terra actually becomes a mother figure to a bunch of orphans at some point and Celes is the object of desire for both Ultros and the love interest of Locke. She also plays the love in the in-game play and is very much the 'desire' of the characters in that play as well.

    I think Terra being the Main Character of FF6 actually travels along these throughout the game. She begins an Innocent (even brainwashed child) to Trancing or Sexually Awakening and then she becomes the mother role of the Orphans of Mobliz. Celes on the other hand solely plays the seductress/Jane role even getting her infamous opera scene to show this off. No question Relm/Remu is the Child/The Innocent. Keep up the great videos!

    I would not categorise Terra as a seductress. She's definitely a mother figure in the second half of the game, when she takes care of all the orphans. Hell, they even call het mama. There's also an argument to be made that Celes fits the seductress archetype a little more. She dresses up like and opera singer to lure one particular guy into kidnapping her and then agrees to marry him if she looses a bet.
