The stereo is important to me. The base stereo in both the ES and Avalon does not meet my needs. It's pretty easy to find a 1200 watt JBL installed in a Limited or Touring. By contrast, finding a Mark Levinson 1800 watt system installed in anything other than a top trim level ES is nearly impossible. Though the ML is better, you're gonna be looking at an over 50K loaded ES F Sport to get that sound system. Crazy the back seats in the ES don't fold down. I think the triple beam head lights on the ES look great, and I prefer the ES exterior styling. The 19 inch wheels and adaptive variable suspension make the ES F Sport the only natural comparison to the Avalon Touring. Problem is the ES F Sport interior is either ugly red or black. That grey (graphite) interior color on the Avalon is beautiful. Avalon is a bargain.

Just test drive both of them. Whichever suits your driving style more, pick that one. None of these 2 is out of your budget if you have already locked down on a 40-48k USD.
Great video! I bought a used ES 350 base model. It doesn’t have driver seat memory. Very disappointing. A base model luxury sedan should have that, IMO.
Man the new avalon looks so freaking awsome i think its the best looking thing out there in its category plus it has some sportines to its driving dynamics compares to the ES so just for that il get the avalon
The overall refinement, build quality and smoother ride is always noticeable in the Lexus from the different models I have owned and driven compared to their Toyota counterparts. I know it's anecdotal, but I upgraded (in Australia) from an 07 TRD Aurion to an 08 Lexus GS450H recently and the difference in drive quality is remarkable. The GS450H is like driving on a cloud while the Aurion felt like any other generic sedan of it's type comparing driving experiences.
The European/Japanese ES gets better options than the USDM model. You can't get heated rear seats or reclining rear seats on the USDM model. JDM version has camera mirrors. The avalon is a better package. I mean your looking at $52k MSRP for a loaded ES vs 43k msrp for the loaded Avalon. For second hand, the Avalon limited I can find is for $35k and 11k miles vs es 350 ULTRA LUXURY at $45k with 3k miles.
The Avalon Touring is not the top of the line; the Avalon Limited is. But he possibly chose to compare the Touring and the ES Premium because seat material and other things are as "close" to each other in type as possible.
Actually Lexus isn’t expensive to service simply because it is a Toyota product. Lexus and toyota are interchangeably some of the least expensive cars to maintain.
Awesome comparison! In my opinion you should add 1 point to Lexus for its badge, even though it doesn’t affect the physical ride or looks, it’s more desirable because of status. Some would even argue that the Lexus bade makes the car look better.
A badge isn't enough to award a point. All things considered, power, comfort, performance, features, the fact that the Avalon has many features of the ES but at a lower price point, it could be argued that the Lexus should lose a point due to the badge.
@@travelseatsyellowlab but that’s the reason it deserves a badge… it’s literally “avalon is nice but for that price, i’ll rather get a lexus” which is why there’s like a million es but like 10 avalon (over exaggerating obviously, but es have double the sale). badge does mean things, especially for 45k+. they’ll rather have a badge then more features
I own an Avalon and I think the Avalon is better, in this segment video. However, this is the top of the line Touring Avalon verses an almost based Lexus ES. I wouldn't say that this is to say that the Avalon is better than the ES. But, according to the price by price comparison, you do get a better bang for your buck with the Avalon.
I'm not surprised at all. A buddy of mines mother had it in her head that she wanted a Lexus a few years ago. Really had her heart set on one. We all went to the car show that year and she spent the entire time there walking back and forth between the Toyota and Lexus displays. My friend pointed out that the Avalon, a car she had totally ignored up to this point, was very similar to the Lexus she was looking at for significantly less money. Long story short, she bought the Toyota and has been very happy with it. She also saved a lot more than the $1,400 dollar difference you had in this review.
not sure in the US but where I come from, Lexus holds a much better resale price down the road.so I give Lexus an extra 5 points base on this very important fact.
One key point that's left out... Lexus are made in Japan exclusively vs Toyotas that are made in America... Both vehicles are a lot better and more reliable when made in Japan even though you don't see many Toyotas made in Japan anymore.. You get a better warranty with Lexus as well.. I purchased a 2003 Camry that was made in America that was terrible... Did the required maintenance but had to have the engine replaced and brake issues etc.. was a big disappointment ! The car definitely was not up to usual Toyota standards ! In addition the maintenance program on the Lexus is a lot better because they give you a loner car if they ever have to keep your vehicle overnight or longer.. Compared to other luxury brands Lexus cost less to maintain
Diagonal screen size is misleading unless the aspect ratios are the same. A better measure is total pixel area. The Lexus 12"+ screen is long and short whereas Avalon is more square. I am willing to bet Avalon screen area is > Lexus. This is obvious in the video shot of birds eye camera view
PLATINUM there is no comparison. One will leave you on the side of the road with a bad transmission while the other one will get you to wherever you need to go.
I'd like to know the actual percentage of CVTs that have problems, I feel like people only come online to complain and others just bandwagon and it makes them sound a lot worse than they are, even if they are bad
Fun comparison as I just went through the decision my self and opted for the Avalon Hybrid Limited w/ Advanced Safety pkg (the only option as it if FULLY equipped already). MSRP $45.582. Similarly equipped Lexus ES300h Ultra Luxury model, FULLY equipped would be would be about $53-55K. Both cars local dealers were offering ~$2,200K discount. The Avalon was in stock w/ exact colors I wanted so went w/ that. Lexus wasn’t & an order would take 6-8 wks they said. I probably would have gotten the Lexus if it were in stock. The touch screen on Avalon might be easier to operate than the mouse on the Lexus. Entune is clearly 2nd rate compared to BMW’s & Audi’s.
Such great info...and useful! I wish you had included NVH as well as amount of sound insulation differences with dB of quietness and comparisons to each other. Additionally, Toyota offers laminated windshields and side glass to quell noise and road speed. Not sure if either of these cars would include it at this price point. If you are stuck at this price point, the Videos are key! Thanks so much.
Ill say im happy with how this video turned out. It's no surprise these days that the full size sedan segment is pretty much making sure they're called "flagships" for a reason. The 2016 Maxima I think started the trend of super upscale interiors. Definitely no comparisons to be made by competitors back in 2016 or 17. Glad to see Toyota step up to the challenge and even sneak in an extra 1 horsepower just to say they did it. I would take an Avalon over an ES all day and that'll most likely stand until Lexus figures out what to do with that touch pad... it's just a huge downside. Sometimes it's not so bad to just be like everybody else. Make a nice, high quality knob that rotates and moves in a nice, satisfying way and boom, you can begin to justify a Lexus over an Avalon. That logo up front isn't good enough for smart people buying cars... we gotta go where the bargain is. If your mainstream brand is more luxurious than your luxury brand. Fix that lol
I actually liked the joystick. I like the screen being far back so you don’t have to look down from the road to see navigation and stuff. I am less fond of the touch pad. I find with Touch screens I am always reaching forward to press buttons. I don’t have to do that with the joystick.
@@djplonghead5403 reaching forward yes, but you're getting the task don't significantly faster when you can just use your finger. Many automakers excused their choice for not going touch, because they deemed it safer to interact with while driving. I'd argue the fact it takes longer means your attention is diverted for longer periods which doesn't really seem or sound any safer to me. I'd rather just do what I wanna do nearly instantly and be back at full attention ahead as fast as possible. You as the driver are responsible for deciding when a good time to mess with your screen would be. Shouldn't be the manufacturers imo. This is before you even get to the other, maybe even the dominant fact on the ground. All of these cars had adaptive cruise control back then and most new cars sold today have the feature or option the feature. . . This was GOING to happen. So it's not blatantly unsafe to look a little lower on your dash when your car is braking for you and making sure to keep that safe distance from the car up ahead. It was a bad decision back then that they went with the less efficient route. It's worse that new cars to this day are doing it. Acura for example, still a touch pad. Mazda's are still only touch screens when they're using Apple Carplay. Or when the car is parked I believe it can be used by touch as well. All unnecessary.
I completely agree with the comparison, and it was an eye opener for me. For the price of ES 350, you can get a Porsche Macan ($49,950) or a Mercedes SUV GLB. Lexus increased the price on the ES a lot, and it cannot compete with other premium cars on tech and value. ES does not even have LED headlight as standard, you have to pay extra for it, wat kind of "luxury" car does not have LED headlight? For me, the deal breaker is the big hump over the instrument panel, it restricted my view and I think it is a safety hazard.
In Saudi Arabia, the Lexus ES 2019 4 cylinders without any options is more expensive than Avalon 2019 with all options. If I get the lexus I'll lose so many options with paying more money, the base Lexus ES is like buying a 2010 car unlike the avalon. If you go for Lexus make sure you buy the full options or not get a Lexus
Me being someone that has driven , the Camry the Avalon the solara and a couple different Lexus , I have g14 classification to say this . The Lexus IS the better buy . Slightly better parts and you have the recognition of buying and driving a Lexus . That’s if you care about that . In this particular case I would take the Avalon fully loaded .
If you put all the $10,000 of extras that make Avalon a Lexus ES on the ground and really look at the parts. Are all those parts just laying there really worth the $10,000?
Great comparison and yes I would take the Avalon at this price point not only that it has more {(quirks and features) Doug lol} but it looks elegant and very matured and those LEDs are hypnotic
Drive an Es and then drive an avalon. Whatever differences they have on paper dont even compare to how they feel irl. My friend has a new avalon and I have the older ES and the ride quality as a whole is honestly better in many aspects
Lexus is slightly different in the chassis even though a lot of the component are the same. They added extra braces around the ES so that it makes it rides and handles better than the Avalon and that's the reason ES don't have 60/40 folding rear seats. Also don't know if this is true or not but the Lexus have more laser welds when compared to the Toyota, also not mention in there is the Avalon does not have Panoramic Roof while the ES have it with the higher trims. Sound system wise ES have 10-speaker, 296-watt Pioneer audio system that comes standard, but an 1,800-watt, 12-channel Mark Levinson system is optional. The Avalon's 14-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL system is standard on the top two Limited and Touring trims and is available as a $680 audio upgrade on the XLE and XSE
Good video but you failed to mention driving the ES is so smoother and quieter than the Avalon. The ES can take bumps in the road with ease while the Avalon you need to grab on to the steering wheel a bit and hold on. Either way, they are both good cars, it just depends on your budget and what you are looking for when you drive.
The Avalon is the best value, but the fit and finish on the Lexus is simply unmatched. You also get cornering lamps, AUTOMATIC heated and cooled seats, and better sound insulation. Lexus rides much better
For some reason, the current LS was a disappointment. It was rated as one of Consumer Reports top buy but the current LS500 sits at the bottom of the Large Luxury segment. It seems Lexus ruined their sweet formula when they tried to make their sedans more sporty and aggressive. I wonder if the removal of the V8 in favor of a turbo V6 played a big role in this.
I used to think that but you have to look deeper, I know that design is subjective (I prefer the Lexus over the Toyota), look at the little detail like how the temperature slides instead of flicker, the little clock, the texture on the leather, the fit and finish and others smaller detail. Yes if you want a car to just drive from point A to B those my not worth a cent to you, but I love car design, I'm on the road for hours everyday and when you spend that much times inside a car those little detail can be important!
I like both but the deciding factor for me would be the resale value. Avalons typically tank in value around 10-15 years old where as the Lexus retains some of that value. For example I drive a 2003 ES300 and my grandma had an 04 Avalon. Her Avalon got totaled with 73k miles on it and the insurance company offered her 4k for the car. If my ES had the same mileage I would've gotten at least 5k but probably more if they were having a good day.
Only in the last generation of Avalons have the began closing the gap with the ES in terms of safety, technology, quality and pricing. With the Avalon offering essentially the same car in their lineup as the Lexus offers with an entry-level ES, the depreciation gap will likely prove little difference between the models in the future.
@@travelseatsyellowlab To the Avalon's credit, it appears to be actually holding its value better than the ES. I did a quickie lookup on Kelley Blue Book on used car prices of 2019's. It was not quite apples to apples because I compared the top-trim Avalon Touring to the second-from-top ES Luxury, but the Avalons were valued at $32k and the ES at a barely higher $33k. Scarcity might be a factor here, of course.
The dynamic turn signal on the Avalon gets me everytime, it's so nice
Even though the Avalon is the better deal for some people it’s about the badge and would rather go with the Lexus.

Now the speed in the Avalon is a little faster than the Lexus only because I purchased the 2018...the 2019 has more speed like the Avalon....but as I told my husband I'm not into speed like that....I hope this helps some. The leg room was the only reasons I didn't go with the Camry was they didn't have the white and black front to back sunroof with red interior and the leg room on the lot that day.
Just test drive both of them. Whichever suits your driving style more, pick that one. None of these 2 is out of your budget if you have already locked down on a 40-48k USD.
Silent Refusal this is True
Although I'm not a big fan of both, but you get more for your money in the Avalon versus the ES.
Seriously best comparison I have ever seen. Reviewers over complicate comparisons lol, genius
Thanks!
The rear end on the Avalon is next level design.
Great video. IMO the Avalon offers enough of luxury to save yourself a little money. You just don’t get the Lexus badge which means a lot to some.
Thanks 👍
The overall refinement, build quality and smoother ride is always noticeable in the Lexus from the different models I have owned and driven compared to their Toyota counterparts. I know it's anecdotal, but I upgraded (in Australia) from an 07 TRD Aurion to an 08 Lexus GS450H recently and the difference in drive quality is remarkable. The GS450H is like driving on a cloud while the Aurion felt like any other generic sedan of it's type comparing driving experiences.
Plus the F sport suspension and adaptive dampening for the ES 350
What an excellent review, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it! You're welcome!
Lexus for me, great vid
The European/Japanese ES gets better options than the USDM model. You can't get heated rear seats or reclining rear seats on the USDM model. JDM version has camera mirrors. The avalon is a better package. I mean your looking at $52k MSRP for a loaded ES vs 43k msrp for the loaded Avalon. For second hand, the Avalon limited I can find is for $35k and 11k miles vs es 350 ULTRA LUXURY at $45k with 3k miles.
This is the best side by side comparison Only thing missing was the overall length
The Lexus is second to base and the Avalon is the top of the line
The Avalon Touring is not the top of the line; the Avalon Limited is. But he possibly chose to compare the Touring and the ES Premium because seat material and other things are as "close" to each other in type as possible.
Very well produced video comparison, I'd take the Avalon just based on the fact that it costs less to service.
Actually Lexus isn’t expensive to service simply because it is a Toyota product. Lexus and toyota are interchangeably some of the least expensive cars to maintain.
@@stefanb.5154doesn’t matter. If you go to a Lexus dealership they will charge you more.
Avalon is what the Lexus ES should be
Lexus all the way, pretty much the same car but i like how the Lexus looks more.
Both excellent vehicles. Toyota still builds the best you can buy
@@travelseatsyellowlab He added a half point for the metal trim around the key fob. The badge should definitely count for at least a half point.
@@scoot5642 superficiality and stupidity reigns supreme.
It's ES for me ! Anytime
Great video, surprising result and I've actually been wondering this for a while now. Subscribed!
Thank you! We appreciate it!
I know that Lexus is a great car but I will go with the Avalon which is great for someone as tall as I am.
You forgot about the Avalon cornering headlights
The ES350 does the same
They just keep getting better. Avalon has great value.
Another knock for lexus is that you cant get a 360 camera on it. The Avalon you can. That decided it for me.
Marco Deo they finally put it on the 2020 ES
Toyota is poor man’s Lexus...but it doesn’t mean it’s garbage. It’s still a nice reliable car. I like both.
not sure in the US but where I come from, Lexus holds a much better resale price down the road.so I give Lexus an extra 5 points base on this very important fact.
The lexus ES costs $7500 t0 $9000 more than an Avalon. So, as far as resale value it damn well better be worth more
That's false Avalon actually holds better value
I like your review style, well done!
Thanks!
With folding seats, Avalon WINS. No folding seats the car basically uses less!
Uses less what?
The ES is gorgeous but depending on your budget, the Avalo is nice just don't at the lower grille
Excellent idea for a video, I was thinking about this very same comparison! Nice work.
Thanks friend 🙂
It’s 9 inch display for Avalon not 8
Diagonal screen size is misleading unless the aspect ratios are the same. A better measure is total pixel area. The Lexus 12"+ screen is long and short whereas Avalon is more square. I am willing to bet Avalon screen area is > Lexus. This is obvious in the video shot of birds eye camera view
I would love to see the 2019 Maxima compare to the Avalon 🙃
PLATINUM there is no comparison. One will leave you on the side of the road with a bad transmission while the other one will get you to wherever you need to go.
I'd like to know the actual percentage of CVTs that have problems, I feel like people only come online to complain and others just bandwagon and it makes them sound a lot worse than they are, even if they are bad
Corey I’ve seen nissans with ~30k miles have their transmissions replaced...
RIPPLE RICHIE really? I feel like you’re trying to justify your purchase.
No doubt here, the Avalon is better in every way.
What about cabin quietness and ride quality? Lexus should be better in those regards.
Congratulations on the new car! You can't go wrong with either choice!
Just bought one! Love the grill; yes it has a wireless charger; and it runs on REGULAR gas; 87 octane!
Which one? The Avalon, or the ES?
It's the Avalon that has the wireless charger.
IAmJustLordFarhan: The Normal Dude Avalon. You can’t put 87 in no Lexus
@@mikebrandon3100 the ES has wireless charger too
@@eastside313yahdig.2 its the Same Engine Willis
avalon has a better name
This is what I need. Great review. Thanks.
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!

Yes it does have led headlights standard
@@andybub45 exactly. It’s the triple beam led that’s an option.
What do you think my friend about the lowest cotgorey in avalon XLE , is it worth to buy ?
I think cabin noise should be a consideration in future videos
It is now in all our comparisons from the last year or so 👍
I go for both ES and Avalon, but I personally I go for Toyota Avalon. It’s a gorgeous flagship.
Not being picky ..I would take either one. Big grill no grill any grill.
Great comparison even though Lexus is more luxurious prefer the Avalon thanks for the video Drew
We're both glad you enjoyed haha
Wow, what an awesome video. Very well made and explained. Thank you so much for the comparison!
Thanks!
On which?
@@hatzuling ES of course :)
Michael Schuler
The es is a lot smoother and the avalon is sportier. If you prefer a luxury vehicle, the es is for you.
They ride the same if avalon had Lexus badge ypu would not be saying that. People are dumb man
Lexus is slightly different in the chassis even though a lot of the component are the same.
Also every Lexus coming of the assemblyline is quality-checked while only like every 1000nd toyota is (according to my local dealer at least)
They didn't mention the options because they were comparing at a certain price point. Options only mentioned if the feature was standard on Avalon.
If you compare 42,000$ Avalon to the 42,000$ Lexus ES you will get more in the Avalon.. that's a fact.
laser welds are the same for both since they are the same platform just different clothes.
I dont like either grills but the Lexus is at least tasteful to a degree. I'd still take the ES but I much prefer the 2013 interior and grill.
The Avalon is the best value, but the fit and finish on the Lexus is simply unmatched. You also get cornering lamps, AUTOMATIC heated and cooled seats, and better sound insulation. Lexus rides much better
Nope they ride the same
Nope they ride the same
Avalon have this options
bought 3 es already。。。hope can afford a LS500 soon or later...
For some reason, the current LS was a disappointment. It was rated as one of Consumer Reports top buy but the current LS500 sits at the bottom of the Large Luxury segment. It seems Lexus ruined their sweet formula when they tried to make their sedans more sporty and aggressive. I wonder if the removal of the V8 in favor of a turbo V6 played a big role in this.
the avalon reads speed limit signs as well and has lane keep assist.
They should have used the Limited version of the Avalon I have a 2014 analon Limited and it has fully leather seats
Agree
Avalon looks more aggressive. More like an Audi. Lexus has to much chrome.
Excellent review! What do both of these have for a spare tire?
Yes I think so
Nice review
Great job on a review
How would sound deadening and sound especially on highway compare?
Could you do camry vs avalon comparisons and other Toyota product comparisons with each other?
I love the 2019 Lexus ES350 BUT it's slow 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds. Even the Toyota Camry's same engine gets going in 5.8 seconds.
6.6 is not slow for something that big
I love toyota and lexus
Lexus charges more for (basically the same) parts than Toyota does. Keep this in mind before buying a new or used Lexus vs. Toyota.
Thank you.
This is a great video.
Great review my guy!!
Thanks!
Very professional
Toyota looks better
Zachery Haga ya damn right
You forgot the Avalon touring has AVS and you would have to go to the F Sport on the Lexus to get it.
Love your videos!!!👍🏻❤️
Thanks, Micheal!
