I cant thank you enough for posting this! After watching your video 5 times, I went to my local Toyota dealership, bought the kit, and had it installed in just over 1 hour! It works like a charm on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport!
Received the kit today. Took a couple hours to install, with McGivering the no harness to attach too issue. Worked like a charm. Thanks for your original video steering me in the right direction.
Picked up my power tailgate lock for my 2020 TRD OR at the dealership yesterday and because they were slow the Service Dept. offered to install for me, they quoted 2.5hrs of labor/$387.50, I politely said no. Thanks much for the detailed video. Took me over an hour+ to get it installed but well worth it
Hello, I would like to inform you that I was able to install the genuine powered tailgate in my 2023 access cab using your video. Although the grommet location is slightly different, everything else was quite similar! Thank you for the video!
Just did mine, Your video was extremely helpful. The cheap locking washer was the only thing I didn't like about the kit, other than that much better than the pop and lock. Thanks!
Great video, thanks for posting! There have been some minor revisions to the instructions, mostly just clarifications. My kit did not include instructions but the local dealer was happy to email me the current Toyota installation instructions, so it might be worth asking when you order the kit.
Installed on my 2021today. Thank you for sharing your video. It’s relatively easy to do. Just to let others know that the 2020/2021 kits are not Toyota POPnLOCK as they were for 2018, these 2020+ are a truly a Toyota manufactured part.
Awesome, thanks for the straight forward step by step walk-thru and especially the ordering options. Wonderful! I just bought a brand new 2020 and the automatic rear lock thing is the only thing I really miss, so this video is very helpful. Side note - really nice that the rear led bed lights are so easy to install now. On the 2020 Tacomas Toyota has pre-wired them to connect to the tail lights, instead of needing to running all that wiring forward.
Just received the factory kit for Christmas so this definitely helps my installation on my 2016. I too was going to do the Pop and Lock until I saw the factory kit, I wasn’t a fan of cutting the stock harness.

After watching the Pop n Lock video and watching yours, it’s a no brained to use the Toyota OEM harness. Well worth the money. Although I found one about the same price. Note: One supplier said the long bed version “-35jl0” was back ordered not due til February 2021! Check around the with others however.
Enough said! I’m returning the pop n lock. Factory system is only a little more expensive. Quality of parts and ease of install is worth the price difference!

Yes. But it runs up the drivers side. Problem would be the existing harness i bought is likely too short to cross over and back if I can even find a good spot to do that.
Yes there are the 2 connector blocks inside the panel in the same location as shown in your video. Also, I found a string on “Tacoma World” that confirms there isn’t a harness on the “SR” models. Will have to figure a way to zip tie through the holes in the frame rails I guess.
I folded them back over themselves and made sure the tails wouldn’t rub on anything to prevent problems. I was thinking of the technicians in the future like me that have to fish my arm up around that muffler. Lol

I have a 2020 Tacoma SR5 double cab short bed and my camera wire runs under the drivers side. Do I try to follow the camera wire to the driver side or do I mount the wire on the frame of passenger side?

There are different kits for the long and the short bed with different length wire looms. The part number in the description is the one for the short bed. Surprised it worked in the long bed like the video. Must have not been any slack leftover! You'll even see at 0:48 when he takes it out of the box that it says it is for the Short Bed.
Tim I said the same thing when I opened the box. I even checked twice to make sure that the kit I ordered fit the long bed. I purchased from Toyota and they told me it was for the long bed so I check the harness length and it was perfect. I would not be surprised if Toyota only has one kit that fits both because you can always roll up the extra for the short bed. If you have a different part number for a long bed kit please share!
@OhioLiving Out curiosity: I have 16 Sport DCSB. In theory, I'm believing this would work. I doubt much of the wiring has (or had) changed in 4 years. Do you believe this might fit for my truck?
I don’t know why Toyota doesn’t list all third gen (2016- current) Tacoma’s on their parts listing. It only shows 2018-2020 figment. I would look over the video and verify the tailgate latch, harness connector and hole in the floor are the same and then I say go for it!
@@playdixie just out of curiosity, how did the install go for you for the 2016. I read on Tacoma forums that it should work perfectly. Just bought it for my 2017 tacoma. let me know, thanks!
Looks like you ran it to the passenger side to connect. Was the wire long enough? I'm considering getting the long bed version for my short bed to get the extra foot of harness. Thoughts having installed this?
Kevin I would imagine that it could work on all third gen Tacoma’s (2016- Current) however Toyota’s parts listing shows it only working for 18-20. Look over the video and verify that the connector for the harness, tailgate latch and hole in the floor are the same and if so I would imagine it would work

I have my door locks set to unlock with one push of the button. Will the tailgate open with the door locks every time or do you always push it twice to open the tailgate? Also, from the video it sounds a lot quieter than the pop and lock. Is that just the video or is it really that quiet? Thanks for the upload. Seems pretty straight forward.
It will trigger on the passanger doors so if you have them set to unlock on one push it should. I have never used the pop and lock so i cant say but this is very quiet

@@RecBuddha check out this link and read it parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_2020_Tacoma/Remote-Tailgate-Lock/91139371/PK3B635JS0.html
@@OhioLiving Dug a bit on TW forums and found it - PK3B6-35JL0 is the part number for the tailgate lock kit for the dual cab long bed.
Were you able to find installation instructions?
Sorry just found your link
Hopefully it still works
50k for truck and use key for tailgate? Not me
50 K ? I’m not sure where your shopping if you think a Tacoma costs that much.
@@OhioLiving thanks for the reply! Appreciate the insight.
No problem!
@@OhioLiving I decided to take the plunge and bought a kit. Guess we'll see if it works or not when it gets here. *fingers crossed*
@@playdixie just out of curiosity, how did the install go for you for the 2016. I read on Tacoma forums that it should work perfectly. Just bought it for my 2017 tacoma. let me know, thanks!
Great video! Definitely on my to do list
Thanks!
Will this work for 2018 ?
Looks like you ran it to the passenger side to connect. Was the wire long enough? I'm considering getting the long bed version for my short bed to get the extra foot of harness. Thoughts having installed this?
If you have a short bed and you want to use the long bed harness you will have a lot of extra
From the video, you ran the power to the passenger side?
Yes the harness should run down the passenger side
Do you have any idea if it fits a 17? Why is it only 18-20?
Kevin I would imagine that it could work on all third gen Tacoma’s (2016- Current) however Toyota’s parts listing shows it only working for 18-20. Look over the video and verify that the connector for the harness, tailgate latch and hole in the floor are the same and if so I would imagine it would work
Did you get the kit for 2017 and worked?
I have 2017 wondering the same.
I have an access cab do you know if I need the long bed version or short bed?
Either will work
I would go with the short bed version
Did you bought it from Toyota or is there a wed site
I ordered it froma toyota dealer online
thank you
Your welcome!
Where did you order this kit from?
Part numbers are in the description and I just found a Toyota dealer online and ordered from them. Shop around by part number and you will find a dealer running a sale
Thanks you made it look easy, I could use a bit more detail ,but maybe it will seem more obvious when I actually install my new kit.
Let me know if you have any questions when you get the kit and I will be happy to help
Never mind I just saw it....
Would be better if you showed everything instead Of passing things up.
What was passed up?
