    Few comments for those with a 2016 taco limited.
    Great video btw, would have taken me MUCH longer to complete without you helping so thanks a lot.
    I had to modify the grommets from the kit to fit snugly in the tailgate. They have this little knotch in the bottom I had to widdle away with a knife and a side cutters.
    The rubber grommet used for the running the wiring into the cab; its further in under the carpet in the driver's side rear. I drilled a 9/16 bit then forced it through. I still put a small bead of silicone on underneath.
    I tried running the t harness to the connectors in the pillar like in the video, but harness doesn't fit those connectors. I ended up running it to kick panel. I had about a foot left of wire so all good there.
    Fun little project!

    Hey chloe, nice video! Its a very useful mod which i did on my 2016 tacoma, i bought an unbranded motor though and its working great for about 3 years now, one hint for everyone and even you, i did the wiring on the passangers door so the actuator isnt locking and unlocking everytime you step in or out of the truck, only difference is you have to press twice on the key fob to unlock the tailgate. Keep up the good work!

      Man, that’s a great idea. Wish I would have read this before I ran the harness all the way past the fuel tank. That was a serious pain in the butt. 😢
      Update: I undid all the work to run the harness to the driver’s door and rerouted to the passenger’s door and then the Pop&Lock actuator wouldn’t work. Now I wish I hadn’t seen your post at all, lol.

    Thank you, your video was very easy to follow and made the job simple. I want to comment on the tailgate wiring harness and body wiring harness. My truck is a 2023 Tacoma double cab (4-door) with 5 foot bed. I didn't use the tailgate wiring harness. The body wiring harness was long enough with about 8 inches to spare. This way I didn't need to have the two harnesses connecting under the truck.

  • @kitop310
    @kitop310 3 года назад +9

    I went with the “OEM” kit, since it wasn’t back ordered. Only complaint is it was a royal pain to get the wiring connectors through the grommet hole. But then afterwards, having a beer, it dawned on me: “Hey dummy, should’ve run them down through the floor instead of up from underneath, yeah it would’ve meant more wire pulling, but would’ve saved you a lot of cussing.”

    This is one of my favorite mods. I ended up tapping into the rear door locks, so the hatch locks on a double click only. This will help with wear and tear, as well as, keep the noise to a minimum. The pop and lock can be loud, but the noise can be remedied with some sound deadener around the actuator. Thanks for the great videos. Please keep them coming.

    I bought the manual version before I saw this video. This is cool but not worth the hassle although she makes it look super easy.

    I put the OEM tailgate lock on my 2020. Not sure when they started offering it and if it works on earlier years. It was about $160, so a little more than the pop n lock.

      @@TomASwift yes. The 2020's don't have the wiring either (unless it came with that option, obviously)... you open the tailgate panel, install the actuator, run it through there and up/under the truck and under the front passenger seat, through the floor and pigtail the harness into the power door lock harness. All plug and play, no cutting or splicing.

    Chloe you have so many cool mods on your Tacoma. Off the top of your head, about how much money do you think you have invested in your Taco. I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I have a 2003 SR5 4x4 2.7 liter Tacoma that I bought for $10,000 about 10 years ago. I had to replace my 5 speed transmission and I've added Rancho 9000 shocks. Other than that, it's pretty stock but I still like watching your vids.

    Actually yes you can order the oem auto tailgate lock. They sell it for short and long bed Tacoma.

    I remember an older vid where you installed a home made/custom clamp to help keep thieves from stealing the tailgate. Do you still have that with this pop n lock? Do you think it would still be necessary?

    • @ChloeKuo
      @ChloeKuo  3 года назад

      Yes, I installed a hose clamp around the pivot point on the tailgate. That would be helpful in the event I forget to lock the tailgate (which would now mean I forget to lock the truck because of the pop n lock) all together
