  • In today's video, I modify my Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road to 1) have an AC outlet in the cab, and 2) keep the factory inverter at 400W while driving! This is possible with a plug-and-play kit from Guild Outfitters. What do you think?!

    The 'New Car Features' document Toyota has on the Tacoma has two precautions for the inverter system:
    (1)" When using high power electrical equipment (100W and above) with the power outlet system, do not use other electrical components (headlights, wipers, etc.) at maximum capacity.";
    (2) "Avoid using high power electrical equipment (100W and above) with the power outlet system continuously over an extended period of time while also using other electrical components (headlights, wipers, etc.). This can drain the battery."
    So it appears Toyota is likely concerned about the alternator being able to keep up. If you're driving, you're more likely to be using headlights/wipers, so that may be why the inverter cuts to 100W when in motion. If a drained battery caused the engine to stall, that could be a safety issue depending on the situation.
    For people asking if both sockets (bed and this new one) can be run at the same time, keep in mind the inverter, the inverter wiring, relay for this circuit, etc. were not designed for a 800W load. I wouldn't do it. While the inverter does have thermal protection, if you fry it you're out $400.

    • @nalinification
      @nalinification Месяц назад

      How do you figure a 400W inverter will ever be putting out 800W as you describe. If you plug a 10000W appliance into the outlet its not going to burn anything up, its just going to do... NOTHING.

    Thanks for the vid. This will be cool for vehicle fridges. However, 100W, when the vehicle is in motion can’t keep fridges cool and you still connect and use coffee maker with a 400W. Better off installing a power inverter.

    I’ve been a big Toyota fan for over 30 years and a year ago I went to buy a new Tundra and I found out that there were no more V-8 engines, I couldn’t believe that they quit making them and everything they make now is 4 or 6 cylinder engines. With turbos. So I bought a new Ram Power Wagon with a big block Hemi . I can’t drive a full size truck with a 6 cylinder in it.

  • @hemobreak
    @hemobreak Год назад

    Nice. This might be a cheaper method for getting higher power to recharge my ECOFLOW Delta 2. DC Charger Plug is DC 120W. A Victron Energy Orion 12/24-Volt 20 amp DC-DC Converter (DC 480W) cost $160 vs $100 for this upgrade kit which provides AC 400W anytime.

    • @nickknack5884
      @nickknack5884 Год назад

      This might not work for charging an ECOFLOW due to the modified sine wave issue from the factory inverter. The ECOFLOW needs a true/pure sine wave on AC charging. The DC-DC Converter is still your best bet.

    • @hemobreak
      @hemobreak Год назад

      @@nickknack5884 Thanks for the info. I'll double check the AC input requirements for the ECOFLOW. I can also try charging directly from the truck bed plug. But I don't want to do anything that might damage the ECOFLOW.

    • @hemobreak
      @hemobreak Год назад

      I checked some of the Tacoma forums and people have tried AC bed plug with their ECOFLOW and Jackery solar generators. So it seems safe to try the 400W output with the ECOFLOW. With 100W output the inverter overloads and shuts off. There was some mention that the inverter gets hot. Tinkerer's Adventure tried the AC bed plug and mentioned that the Delta 2 (input AC charge rate limited) did not charge due to the modified sinewave output. Anyway I will give it a try since it doesn't appear to damage the ECOFLOW.

    • @hemobreak
      @hemobreak Год назад

      The Delta 2 doesn't charge from the AC bed plug @400W. It did not overload the bed plug. So the best option for faster charging is DC-DC Converter.

    How secure is the outlet when you're pulling out the plug? Doesn't look like there's any support holding the outlet in the compartment, Im afraid when pulling the plug consistently, overtime the compartment gets weaker, and hole gets bigger from the pulling and eventually the outlet just pops right out.

    Whereas it sounds good, I’d still be a little weary on why Toyota went to the extra expense of limiting it in the first place. If it limits when driving, then the alternator may not be big enough to supply power to both the engine and the inverter at the same time. The new model probably has a different alternator to handle the draw.
    Interesting question though.
