- Okay, this is a follow up to my last video talking about eras which did not feature a Stanley Cup win, both by the Flyers.

Wayne Gretzky said the one time that if Pelle Lindbergh didn’t die, the Flyers would’ve won a Stanley Cup.
Also, that 0304 Flyers team they were the closest team I’ve ever seen to winning the Stanley Cup. Our defense was so banged up that year we had Sammy Kapenen who was the winger starting on the defence for us we also had Joni pitkanen and Dennis sedinburgh because Eric desjsardin was injured.
Never forget Primeau tying game 6
Primeau's goal in game 4 of the 2000 conference semi's was the goal I thought was destiny.
if pelle lindbergh didnt die, they prolly still wouldnt have won with the oilers dynasty still around then the penguins inn early 90s
I'm always happy to see a Flyers video. Even if it's about bad times, I like to hear what you think about it
I’m a Pittsburgh native Penguins fan and I’ve always admired the hell out of those 80s Flyers squads - they’re one team era I always look for hockey cards of whenever I’m at a flea market. Propp, Zezel, Lindbergh, Hextall, Mark Howe (Mr. Hockey’s own son), Kerr, Tocchet…they had a lot of talent and a lot of heart, especially coming together after the tragedy with Pelle Lindbergh.
There’s a great story about Hextall where one time late in a regular season game Gretzky had a breakaway and Hextall stoned him: Wayne looked back and said “Who the hell are you?” - Ron shot right back “Who the hell are YOU?!” 🤣
when i think 90s Pittsburgh penguin, i always think of Ulf, the destroyer of knees. this guy even knocked out wayne gretzky's wife janet at a rangers game lmao
People forget the Flyers did not have Tim Kerr in the 1987 finals. Might have made the difference for the Flyers.
H2P SON YEAHH
I still remember the game when the Pens broke their losing streak at the Forum
@@PFB1994But they had him 1989, scored 25 points the first two rounds.
It's too bad you weren't around in the 'Broad Street Bullies' Days! Man, those were some battles! Although I wasn't a Flyers fan, I admired their good luck charm “God Bless America” by Kate Smith, also Goaltender Bernie Parent a lot! Ed Van Impe, Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, Bill Barber, Rick MacLeish & company were a TOUGH bunch!
Cut my hockey teeth on those teams. I became a huge Parent fan when he joined the Blazers of the WHA then he went back to the Flyers. I still have a Jimmy Watson autographed pennant although the signature is barely legible now.
The Legion of Doom era was the first time in my life I can recall having my heart broken as a young Philadelphia sports fan. So frustrating.
That's some pretty incredible knowledge to just be able to pull "Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh" as the favorites which Florida beat right off the top of your head. Exactly why you're THG.
As much as I would have loved to see the Pens win game 7, they would have been curb stomped by Colorado as well
@@thomasw3285 That Colorado team was insane - they'd have more Cups if their dynasty didn't coincide with Detroit.
@@thomasw3285100%. Their whole m.o. was outscore the other guys, which is fine in the regular season, but does not work in the playoffs. They allowed 284 goals that season, the most by any of the playoff teams and 3rd worst in the entire Eastern Conference with only the Isles and Sens, the bottom two teams in the East allowing more.
I would have extended the first Era to 88-89. They did make it to the Conference Final against Montreal
The Devils/Flyers rivalry in the 90s was great… the flyers had some good teams but just kept running into better teams like the 90s devils, 80s oilers and islanders. It’s crazy how many times they got knocked out by the future champion. That 3-1 comeback by the devils I’ll be honest the legion of doom was a powerhouse. I always rooted against them as a devils fan but they kinda deserved one looking back. Boucher was good enough, it pretty much came down to Elias w a timely goal in game 7 of the Flyers might have won in 00. The devils were the champs and bear Philly in 7 but Dallas in 6.
You have to remember that in that Devils series in 2000 Lindros only played about 17 minutes or so the entire series as he was injured.
It sucked the life outta them.
The thing about the Flyers, is that if you discount Stanley cups, they are a top 3 team in every other statistical category. Most wins (except for the O6 teams, but they had 40+ years of playing) best winning percentage, years in the playoffs, consecutive playoffs, Stanley Cup finals, longest winning streak...
1. Thank you for whipping this up so fast. One of the many reasons I'm on Patreon with you.
2. I fully acknowledge my recency bias in weighting the Legion of Doom era ahead of the earlier one since I couldn't watch the earlier run as I lived in places like Alabama. So my personal experience and pain comes from being older and in places I could actually see them dominate on TV.
3. This was awesome info.
4. That Detroit Finals season, my one memory was the goalie flipping throughout that series.
5. That rumor about Hart being one of the charged could make sure their troubles with goalies continue.
Great video! I would even include the '88 and '89 teams as part of that great '80's run - even though they weren't great in the regular season those years, I remember they lost a heartbreaking series to the Caps in '88 (blew a 3-1 series lead) and then in '89 they took a great Montreal team to six games in the conference final. Huge upset win over the Pens in the second round
While they didn't win a Cup, from the late 80s when I was a little kid through the end of the pre-lockout era (2004), the Flyers were a perennial contender (with the exception of a few years in the early 90s). It was frustrating, but hope sprang eternal. The past 10 years have been really challenging as a fan. I'm really glad they've finally embraced the rebuild.
If your Lindros Era started with the 92-93 season, you'd think that Mark Recchi was there the whole time, too: he had two solid seasons as part of the "Crazy Eights" line with Recchi (#8), Lindros (#88) and Brent Fedyk (#18) in 92-93 and 93-94 seasons. What's wierd is that Recchi was part of the trade with Montreal that brought LeClair to the Flyers. Wierder still is that Hextall was one of the players that was traded to the Nordiques for Lindros. 90's Flyers were something else.
Oh it makes me so nostalgic thinking about Legion of Doom😂
I remember, albeit very slightly, the Legion of Doom era for Philly. I remember them beating us 4-1 in 2000 in the quarterfinals, and then the next year us beating them 4-2 in the quarterfinals, with an 8-0 win to close it out 😉
Lindros, Leclair, Keith Primeaux
Great call on this one! Was thinking about this from the last list video.
I remember I had just graduated high school we were drinking at a buddies camp my cousin brought a TV and atena and we watched the flyers hawks final inremember Patrick kane scoring the goal no one knew was in on that old fuzzy TV
I feel like you should do a series comparing different eras in teams, like the Oilers during the 80s to the Oilers now or something
80's,Legion of Doom era-now it's Gritty's era !
I need to see The Hockey Guy do a preview for the Flyers in the Cup final PLEASE BRIERE
I've always felt bad for Cechmanek. In the loss against Ottawa in 5 games, the Flyers scored a total of 2 goals. If he didn't shutout the Sens, the Flyers would have been swept. Flyers fans put way too much pressure on goaltenders to carry mediocre teams.
Yup, they were Fedotenko and McGillis scoring the goals. Ottawa had their number back then. I was there for the home games, they were painful.
excellent presentation.
it'll happen again, it's inevitable that Philly will lift another cup.
My two thoughts as a Flyers fan. Sadness and bring back the jersey worn in the video. The new one for this season is close but still not it.
The People Have Spoken..and Shall Recieve!
Madness board without magnets :D
If it feels like you’re picking on Philly, to be fair, they have the second longest Cup drought right now.
Winnipeg since 1896. 😉
"Toronto made it out of the first round because there wasn't a salary cap" - brutal lmao
Any true Flyers fan recognizes the team's faults and failures. Not like we have any say on the matter, so don't sweat it. No one's harsher critics of the team than we are :D
Tim Kerr did not play in either the 85 or 87 finals. Maybe if he had, he and Propp would be in the Hall Of Fame.
He played some games in 85 finals.
THG can't read TEG handwriting, typical
No argument here. Those teams in the 80’s had higher quality players and had to challenge two different dynasties with basically entire rosters of Hall of Famers. Those Finals seemed to be more of fight than anything since.
If they could have stayed healthy that Legion of Doom would have been a dynasty
The term Legion of Doom was coined by Jim Montgomery. Very interesting
Remember what Lindros' first named line was?
@@Rockhound61658
Can you do the Mario Lemieux Era (1990-91 through 96-97) against the Crosby Era (08-09 to 2016-2017)?
Bobby Clarke
I was thinking about it but realized as good as the LoD era was, it was so brief.
You missed the most significant part of the Legion of Doom streak of failed Playoff runs: they did it in mf style. Those jerseys...
The Philadelphia Flyers : losing Stanley Cup finals since 1976 (0-6).
maybe next year lol
Finally for the first time in the franchise history they’re committed to a rebuild and hopefully Danny B is able to put a Cup winning group together, not just very good
In the 1980 finals Nystrom was not off side, but the goal earlier was one of the greatest blown non-calls in sports history. I'd also like to point out there was another controversial goal early in the series where the Isles had a goal knocked in with a high stick, albeit not as blatant as the game 6 issue. i think it was in game 1, possibly Denis Potvin, but gotta check that. Bottom line is the Flyers gave the Isles too many power plays; that was an awesome team on the PP those Isles.
Flyers 80's chances died the moment Pelle Lindbergh's Porsche hit that wall. But, yeah, the early 80's Flyers were such a disappointment. Losing 3 straight 1st round series' bookended with the finals losses to the Islanders and Oilers. 1988 sucked losing to the Caps and the official death of the Broad Street Bullies came in the 1989 conference finals when no one came to the aid of Brian Propp who was drilled in a dirty hit by Chelios. Whether or not they win a Cup with the dynasty Islanders and Oilers I don't know. I often wonder that if Bernie's career doesn't end on February 19, 1979 do they beat the Islanders.
Hey Hockey Guy, I've got a video idea for you! How about a video about the number of players who have their jersey number retired by more than one team AND players you think are candidates/surprised don't.
I had been a hockey fan before, by my Pens fandom really took off watcher Kasper knock Lindros into the boards, really changing a lot of hockey history
There was no offside on the Nystrom goal.....never even a question about it.
Have you considered about the 1996-97 bruins
Every Penguins fan liked this.
thank you for covering my entire childhood lol
Hextall was a choke Master when you needed him most he would let in beach balls😢 I never liked him in Philadelphia have no matter how good he was
Imagine being a hockey team in PA with only 2 Stanley Cups LOL
Well, not everybody had their team lead by generational players for over 30 years
Imagine being a fan of a Kansas hockey team.
Imagine being a hockey team in PA that would have went bankrupt if they didn't get gifted Crosby and malkin
Now imagine living in West Virginia. Things could always be worse 😂
@@yourneighbour2401 Don’t forget that Pittsburgh absolutely intentionally tanked seasons to get generational players in return!
Ah the 97 team where even Garth Snows "Optimus Prime" shoulder pads couldn't save the day! Imagine the legion of doom with Pelle Lindbergh or Bernie Parent. 🤔
rip pelle lindbergh, and i always wonder what would have happened had Parent not gotten injured
What if Lindbergh didn't have the accident? (I wonder about this)
@@jchristner82had parent not gotten injured, had pelle not died, had Eric Lindros and bobby clarke gotten along, had the covid bubble not happened, the flyers really have such a tragic history
Bernie would have mentored Pelle the way Jacques Plante did him in Toronto.
@@se7ente3n You could throw in Barry Ashbee in that mix.
Was there a more underrated dman than Philly-era Mark Howe?
It's pronounced 'Check-mon-ik'
I can never hate the Flyers because they were the ones to beat the Soviets and in epic fashion.
Great video as I grew up falling in love with the mid 80's Flyers & more in love with the Legion of Doom of the mid 90's... I just wished they somehow could've combined the LOD top line onto the 80s teams with their solid defense, stout goaltending, forechecking prowess & overall grit and then they themselves would've been a DYNASTY that rivaled the actual dynasties they encountered in those Stanley Cup years of 85, 87 & 97 [i.e. Oilers & Red WIngs]...
And to add a not-so-fun fact, in their other three Stanley Cup losing seasons in team history (1976, 1980 & 2010) they also succumbed to eventual "dynasties" in the Habs, Isles & Hawks :-/// What Sht luck haha!!!
The problem the Flyers have had since the 80s is that they’ve always run into a dynasty.
You’re not being a jerk, Shannon. You’re calling them like you see them. It’s hard work being a Flyers fan; but I’ve become conditioned to accept that it will still be a while before that Cup gets back to us.
Interesting thing that I stumbled over: there were only two players who represent a through line from '80 through '87 on the Flyers: Brian Propp and Al Hill. That's a pretty high rate of turnover.
The 80's Flyers weren't as big, but they were grittier.
5 Finals since 1975 and zero wins, not even Bruins have been this cursed
Cursed? One way to look at it. But look at the teams they lost to, all incredible teams. And I'm a Rangers fan who hates the Flyers saying this
@@gregromano7355 Thanks Bud👍 and yes it’s about perspective because there’s plenty of teams in this league that you can pick on who have not even made it to the finals let alone winning a Stanley Cup! I embrace the good & bad with my Flyers as I’m sure that you do the same with your Rangers! ( Would I like more Stanley Cups of course but one thing that I learned watching the NHL for a very longtime now that it is hard to win in this league )
6!
@@SverigeiSverige yes 6. I stand corrected. And all top teams
Dave Poulin in 80s was thee best defensive forward in the NHL.🏒
In the 80s Isles, and Oilers were too dominant. In the 90s Scott Steven clocked Lindros number.
they were no match for the red wings in the late 90s
nah its cuz they traded away everything
Scott "cheap shot" Stevens 👎
Shannon - Now we need a video on the Russian Five ;)
Flyers fan here. The '80's Squads mostly had 'heart and grit'...the 90s Teams with the Legion of Doom were (sorry), largely lightweights with only one solid line who all but disappeared in the 97 Cup Finals. That Cup Final made it abundantly clear that the Flyers were way out of their 'league', with Yzerman & Company putting rings around them at-will. The only player on the Flyers who showed-up was Rod Brind'Amour...one of the few showing a solid effort throughout that series.
One thing, however, has remained a constant: The Flyers have been the 'stepping stone' for Cup- opponents, who later launched Dynasties during their Cup Reigns (Canadiens...Islanders...Oilers (85 and thru 90)...Red Wings, and the Blackhawks).
We always bring out the best in our opponents at the worst possible times.
