    Hi Toby. Great tip about using the asterisk to toggle servo focus on! I thought I'd share with you how I use the new "nub" button: I have it set to allow AE exposure compensation and the reason is that this allows me to use AUTO ISO and still be able to tweak exposure even though both of the dials are unavailable. when in AUTO ISO, you press the nub in and while holding it, spin the index finger dial to bring exposure compensation up or down.

    Excellent info .. Just changed a few of my settings and what a big difference .. especially the registering of the fp from horizontal to portrait position. The changing magnifying on the left to the SET button is a god send...Thanks heaps.

    A much better way to configure the back buttons for one shot/ai servo is to custom control each for metering and AF start then press INFO for detail set and change the AF operation on one button to to 'one shot' and 'AI servo' on the other. No need to mash two buttons at once. You can also change the entire AI servo configuration at the touch of the DOF preview button while using AI servo. Custom controls - DOF preview button - switch to registered AF function - Info for detail set and program your scenario. You can even choose a different AF area selection. Very convenient for wildlife.

    Excellent video. I have always used the DOF button (with my 5D3....now my 5D4) to toggle from "One Shot Focus" to "One Shot Servo"...I find this very convenient, especially when the bride is walking up the aisle. I originally changed the DOF to another function because my finger would often hit this button by accident (while holding the lens) causing my flash to go off, which was annoying at a wedding reception..Now I get double benefit from reassigning the DOF button....

    On my 5D-III I also used to make the SET-button perform magnify function. Additionally, I change image review settings to enable zoom-to-100%-at-used-focus-point when I hit magnify. This gives an immediate focus check with a single button press without needing to touch the back screen. You can tap magnify again to zoom out to see the full image.

    Can you change the way the joystick operates so that its a) faster to move, and b) doesnt need to be flicked every time to move one point across - it would be nicer to just hold left and have it constantly move left until you unhold ... hope that makes sense!

    I did many of the same things you did, but I didn't set up back button focus. I also assigned that new little nub for my iso so now all I need to do is hold that in and spin that top dial to change it. I am coming from the 60 d so I am enjoying seeing videos on how some of these buttons work etc. I am really loving this camera. I don't usually do much video so am not concerned with that aspect of it. Plus our internet service is so bad that I could never upload a high quality video to say You Tube nor could I watch it.

    I prefer to use * for AF start, a modified back button focus setup. It feels more natural for my thumb to press that button than to move further left and press AF-ON. The habit started when I was using an EOS 1D Mark III, and then it carried over to my 5D Mark II and now 5D Mark IV. At this point I've disabled the AF-ON button entirely because I don't use it and don't want it activating a change mid use.

    Nice to see others making use of the HP function! I have 2 setups I use depending on the situation. For both I make sure the selected and registered focus points change/save with the camera orientation, I set AF-On to upper left third, and the * to use the registered focus point set to the upper right third area. After saving both landscape and portrait orientation, I can quickly focus near the L or R rule of thirds areas by just pressing either button. I usually have my depth of field preview button set to the Continuous - One Shot setting as well, which lets me change any of those points temporarily to continuous while holding it down as you have.
    Since the registered HP remembers the type of focus point as well, I also have used a setup that can quickly choose single point or full continuous tracking mode. This works well for fashion/runway events, as I can track the subject down the runway, and then use specific point focus at the end to zero in on the eye or specific outfit element.

    Hi I am having a challenge with the registered focus point custom numb button- the square flashes in the spot I want (for portrait vertical)once but the main focus is still in the middle- the middle over rides it. when I zoom to check focus it goes to center focus not far right for vertical Do you have to hold the numb down while taking photo? I tried it several ways-- no luck.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  7 лет назад

      I never use that. I do know others do. Can you share a little more how it works for you - to set exposure before you recompose?

    • @tracybarr7308
      @tracybarr7308 7 лет назад

      PhotoRec TV I like it because once you push "*" it will stay at that exposure and you can take several pictures at the same exposure until you push "*" again and it turns AEL hold off. Usually it stays on for a few seconds. You shoot one picture and have to wait until it turns off. If I were taking a picture and my subject was in the shadows with the background bright. I can set AEL hold, set my exposure, and shoot away. It works great combined with spot or partial metering modes.
      Also when exposing for the sky or for the grass.

    I tried this with using the * for going from from one shot to Ai servo, but it seems you have to hold it in for it to be in Servo? That's kinda hard when you have to press the Af-On to focus and have another finger on the shutter. Is it a way to make it stay that way when you change between the two?

    • @AstroPinoy
      @AstroPinoy 6 лет назад

      Tommy, you have to turn on the half button shutter AF on function so when you press the "*" you dont need the back focus AF , just use the half press shutter for AF on.

    I have a question. I own a EOS 5D Mark III. Recently, I took a series of pics in high RAW res (25MP). But By the next session the next week, the camera was taking pictures in low RAW (12MP). Unconsciously, I am pretty sure I accidentally change the resolution, pressing some buttons (maybe a shortcut button I dont know about), but its driving me crazy because I dont know how it could have happened. Does said "shortcut" exists? Help me Obi Wan Kenobi.

      The af-on button isn't set to Al Servo, it's set to back button focusing. AI Servo would have to be changed through the drive button.
