That, is worth an oscar.
I agree
You mean headed south?
Your comment is worth a correction.
Headed south, not north.

''Catholics claim angels swept down and saved these rightheous men, protestants say they fell into a pile of shit.'' That line made lol xD
Well, there realy was a bunch of shit in a cart down there.
but they actually fell on a pile of shit and that's why they survived
a very shitty Assassin's Creed style of leap of faith
The angels swept down put a pile of shit under the window, God works in mysterious ways!

Whats a "smiple"?
"Morally subversive, economically destructive, socially degrading, confused in its causes, devious in its results, it is the outstanding example in European history of meaningless conflict" - C.V. Wedgwood, author of The Thirty Years War
Not to mention it threw Germany back a century in developement by civilian losses alone.
Shift to professional armies, emergences of the nation states, secularization of politics and religious tolerance make this war not pointless.
If you want to see a war that didn't solve most of the causes which made it happen, just look at WW1. Now that was a meaningless conflict.
How the fuck have i not read that book yet?
I highly suggest it. It's highly detailed writing over the entire affair.
Marko Antic But that took a huge toll. Germany was set back nearly a century culturally and lost around 20% of its civilian population. The war could have been prevented if the Habsburgs just tolerated the Protestant princes and not raise tensions so much between the two parties.

France definitely wasn't the sole "winner" of this war. Swedish history considers the 30 years war to be the road to the Swedish Empire. After the war's end, not only had Sweden established itself with one of the most modern armies of the era, but gained new territories on the continent which, although small in size, held important trade lanes which filled the Swedish coffers.
Not only that, but the war was very important for the Swedish image, and would shape it in a way that lasted centuries. The 30 year war was the first great conflict in which the press took a notable role, and both sides (though particularly the protestants) were known to employ heavy propaganda through these new papers.
To the protestants in the Holy Roman Empire, Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus) became a hero and was dubbed "Der Löwe aus Mitternacht" - The Lion of Midnight, alluding to the fact that Sweden was often referred to as the Midnight Land, but the title was later turned into the now more commonly known "Lion of the North". Just shortly after his death a chapel was planned to be erected upon the ground where he had fallen, but the plans never came to fruition. Though the king entered the war for political and economical reasons rather than religious ones, without Swedish intervention the German Protestantism may well have been eradicated.
To many Catholics however, the Swedish king became the devil incarnate. Although the Holy Roman Emperor said he regretted to hear the Swedish King had died, rather than been brought to the negotiation table, many parts of Catholic Europe celebrated when news of Gustavus' death reached them. In Spain, the bastion of Catholicism, Gustavus was known by such epitaphs as "Monstruo de Stocolmia" (The monster of Stockholm) and "Tirano de Suecia" (The Swedish tyrant).
But Louis 14 > Swedish "Empire"
Swedish “Empire” was pathetic.
@@JordanG4117 No it wasn't. Sweden had a population of approximately 2.5 million. Russia had 14 million, Poland 9 million Holy Roman Empire 20 million, Denmark 1.3 million. Sweden was always the underdog.
In the great Northern war, Denmark, Poland-Lithuania and Russia had to ally to defeat small Sweden. That if anything is pathetic.
Swedish alliances, 85 000 man strong. Russia Aliiances 260 000 man strong.
@@JordanG4117 how?
WitheredKnight no it wasnt, you mad that they were a dominant power in europe against denmark?
I swear my European History teacher said the same angels pile of shit thing word for word 5 years ago...
Myself and him must think alike.
after the reformation the (quite newly invented) guttenberg printing press let to a massive increase of written satirical and politcal pamphlets. i guess these are the words from some of these pamphlets (or its english translations of the german words).
Well my European history professor isn't even referring to the 30 years war so yeah good for ya.

Wow, great content dude. Found you through Jabzy. I find this conflict so fascinating.

Feature History I found you randomly
the quality of your vids are honestly great, I was surprised you dont have more subs
You forgot the Danish war against Sweden (Torstenson War) and that Sweden occupied most of the HRE, even reaching Praha and capturing everything bar the citadel. Saxon and Brandenburg armies fighting against Sweden were completely wiped out, and their state treasury's collecting nothing, having no control over their own land. Also, the Spanish came very close to taking Paris in 1636, before they withdrew and then the French stated to severely damage them. This led To Portuguese and Catalan Revolts.
The Thirty Years War on my favorite period it has many interesting characters Ferdinand II , Gustavus Adolphus, Albrecht Von Wallenstein, Count Tilly, Cardinal Richelieu, Olivares , Louis XIII,Philip IV, Louis Conde etc . Great Video although you mentioned Cardinal Richelieu and Olivares.
All Hail Gustavus Adolphus
He did the bidding for the French, and Sweden got nothing but dead Swedes. Spain sent its military cast, Conquistadors, which ended in their demise. A mass exodus of Spanish men migrated to the Spanish American colonies to avoid conscription. Spain also bankrolled the thirty Years War, since Ferdinand was a Spanish Hapsburg.
Actually some modern findings show that a vast part of Gustavus' army consisted of german mercenaries... yay?
Mr BigCookie Protestant and Catholic mercenaries. Habsburgs also used Protestant mercenaries and borrowed money and bought weapons from the Protestant Dutch.
You're Spying In the Thirty Years War, Poland chose to fight the Ottomans instead of the Protestants. The Protestants sold weapons to Ottomans and Ottomans gave money to the Protestants to fight the Holy Roman Empire.
Tahuan Tinsuyo so what you're saying is that like every other major european war it was a logical and political shit-fest? x'D
I initially thought the narrator was british but the "Heych-Ahr-Ee" gave away the aussie accent.

We pronounce H the same way though.
Captain Earthquake Nah we say "aych" instead of "haych"
It took my Cherokee speaking ear a while to get what he meant--HRE. It sounded like Haycheree to me, and I was wondering what the hell that was in English lol. We don't learn about this in school where I live, at least not where I went, so this is all new to me.
This - this is good! To condense and animate a complex topic such as the 30 Years War into a 10 minute intro, is no mean feat - plus adding a dash of humour. I salute you sir. +1 subscriber here.

Another result was that Sweden became a dominant power in Europe!

The Russians offered peace to Carolus Rex but he did not accept. Instead, he marched on Russia.
Fumblerful peace where they would get swedish land.
I thought Russia offered a white peace deal at one point.
Subbed. Your animation/art is really great and smooth when playing. You should do ones on wars that are quite often over shadowed but are quite important like the Russo-Japanese war, Xinhai revolution, Italo- Turkish war & Spanish Civil war etc. Keep it up man!

You forgot sweden getting land and fiefs.
pommerania, oldenburg, Rostock(?).
Sweden got land and fiefs. But most importantly: Sweden gained the respect of Europe, invaluable military experience, one of the strongest military industries in the world and a large number of battle-hardened veteran troops and generals.
The 30 years' war is what laid the groundwork for the next 100 years of Swedish military domination in the Baltic region.
And it needed a massive coalition to bring it down. It's certainly not the largest coalition but given Sweden's size and population, the coalition against it was near overkill.
They gained Livonia, Swedish Pomerania (the other part went to Brandenburg), Wismar, Rostock, a bit of Danish Norway and Bremen-Verdun.
And then we got Bernadotte... And he just "we don't want anything to do with anything south of Scania (Skåne)... And that is why we have so many Von-families in Sweden. people fled en mass to the main country.
When we had those territories, many prospered and due to the freedoms that were granted to them had great scientific and philosophical advances.
Got a sub! This is amazing

Hopefully you'll reach Extra History or CrashCourse levels of content! Perhaps you can explore other periods of European
history such as the Italian Wars, Hussite Wars, Great Northern Wars, or the French Wars of Religion.
Oh you compliment me so. But really, thank you. I'm very much open to doing those conflicts in future when the time is appropriate, but for now, perhaps I should prevent myself getting too comfortable doing only European Wars.
Nothing about Transylvania in the Bohemian Phase? The Transylvanians occupied everything that is present day Slovakia and at some point even sieged Vienna. 7 counties of Austria got annexed into Transylvania.
Thank you for putting the music in the description!

"Sweden tags in France" was my favorite part lol
What was Croatian role in this war, did they fought in any major battle?
As far as I know, I believe they were in a personal union under Austria and supplied a large portion of cavalry to the Imperial Army.
I've heard story's about Croatian light cavalry been feared all across HRE cause they were murdering and robbing everything.
This is amazing... high quality and extremely interesting
Nice artwork and very informative! You deserve more views!
You have plenty of mistakes in your video, although I like the format. Just to highlight a few, during the French phase, the Swedes were still very much active in military affairs. Torstensson almost Marched to Vienna for example and won plenty of important battles. Also, you would need to add Sweden as the winners of the war, as they gained hegemony over the baltic, and a status as a great power in Europe as a result of the war. All this well after Gustavus' death.
Jari Oksanen and it is "Cuius REGIO", not "cuius regno"

kind of disappointed that you didn't mention sweden in the outcome of the war, as they gained a huge benefit from the war and later became a powerful empire.
Ellen
>Sweden bacame powerful empire
Well, for few decades only and I wouldn't say they were as powerful as France or Austria. After great initial success they lost II Northern War after all. During the reign of Charles XI Swedish influence in Europe greatly diminished and Charles XII reign was in the end disastrous and definitively ended Swedish dominion over Baltic.
It was a little bit more than a few decades.

The ''Lion from the North'' is more fitting for this war.
I disagree. The 30 years' war was not glorious, it was not epic. It was slaughter. Lion from the North is an epic song about Gustav II Adolf and his conquests, but it does not fit the theme of the entire war. IMHO.

Why do so many videos about the Thirty Years War make the absurd claim that France "took over the fighting bit" after 1635? The Swedes neither ceased nor reduced their military effort.
I don't know. Sweden reached as far as Bohemia by 1648, and laid siege to Prague, although they failed to take the entire city.
Well, of course the swedes army kept fighting. It was already there. But the country didn't send anymore reinforcements or logistics, meaning that on a strategical level, it was just a chevauchee, while France provided a national effort to the soutern front.
Saw you at jabzy's. Subbed, great content!
