Napoleonic Wars are actually eleven different wars. Seven Coalitions, plus Finnish War, Peninsular War, Russo-Turkish War 1806 and the Russo-Persian War of 1803. The Franco-Spanish Invasion of Portugal and the early Anglo-French and Anglo-Spanish Wars can also be seen as wars, adding the count to fourteen.

    • @sandmanhh67

See I have it the other way - quicklime is like a puff of smoke, where carcass is like napalm. Especially good at frying troop blobs, scaring off elephants, and turning wall breach choke points into barbecue pits. I love it. Then again I try to run "gun heavy" with two units of heavy cannon and two units of howitzers per army. I go light on cav and skirmish, and always try to make sure I still have some pikes around to keep cav off the arty.
Im hoping the upcoming CA TW historical game is "pike and shot" (1450 to 1700)....would love to see a Wars of Religion/English Civil War/Thirty Years War game.

Can we all just step back and appreciate that Frederick the Great not only stood his ground against four of the five major powers of Europe at the time, all but alone. Not only that, he faced for the five major powers of Europe and came out the other side with more territory after the fact...
After saying that imagine if Fredrick had been born a few decades later. Image if Napoleon's Prussian enemy was Fredrick himself. That would've been the equivalent of Patton vs Rommell, or Sun Tzu vs Hannibal. I'm unsure who would've won, but that battle would never be forgotten.

    • @Brambora121
      @Brambora121 7 лет назад +190

It would be a great battle indeed! Even Napoleon himself admired Frederick the Great very much. When he conquered Berlin, he visited his grave and said to his crew: “Hats off, gentlemen! If he were alive, we would not be here.”
And I hate to say that, since Frederick the Great must be my most favourite figure in history… Napoleon would probably won. It would heavily depend on the battlefield, the conditions and so on, it would be a close battle, but Frederick the Great was known to be heavily impatient - that's why he lost battle of Kolin and Kunersdorf after all.

For what it is worth, Choiseul when negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1761 was very surprised by the will of the Brits to eliminate the French from the Americas. He said :
"I'm surprised that your grand Pitt (British PM) gives so much importance to Canada aquisition, a territory too scarcely populated to bear any threats to you and which, in our (French) hands, could be used to keep your colonies in a dependance from which they won't hesitate to get ride off the day Canada will be given to Britain".

I admire how you add the correct flags to all states, and how the guns which some states are given are reflective of what weapons they used; for example the Mughals were given a musket that was of an Eastern design and a miquelet, similar to the kind they used. France couldn't win the Seven Years War in America.
To give you the scale there was only around 80 000 french in Norther America compared to 2 millions british at the beginning of the conflict, it was just a matter of time before they took the land.
France could have prevented this if they actually populated their colonies during the reign of Louis XIV but he preferred to spend money to go at wars ( successfully though) against his neighbors in Europe and build the Versailles Palace
Louis XV is often blamed for being the one who launched the decline of France but the reality is that the heritage he had to manage was pretty heavy.

And it's important to know that this lack of great population in French colony was the result of very high level of mercantilism, which completely crippled their colonial growth. While the British had a higher level of economical freedom in their colonies, which could lead to better investment and growths.

hey thanks for this video. as a Canadian the seven years war is something that gets talked about a lot as its one of 2 wars ever fought on Canadian soil(not including the American Revolution, we don't talk about that.) However it's only ever talked about in terms of the North American conflict and only vaguely in terms of European conflicy. really interesting to hear about the broader conflict.

I have never understood why this was never considered the first world war by many historians. Let it be remembered that Europe in the 1600s-1700s weren't made of tiny countries. (PLEASE don't take that the wrong way, just think of HRE as one big country for now, instead of an empire of small puppets) Since most of the world powers were involved, this could be considered the legitimate ww1...

@@vulpes7079 Because I guess the idea of revolting against the rule of a colonial, monarchical power was "revolutionary" at the time (which of course it wasn't). This was also because the AWI occurred right at the end of the age of enlightenment, so the enlightenment thinkers that comprised a few of our founding fathers could also be associated with revolutionary concepts like Thomas Paine's "The Rights of Man" which served also as a justification for the more appropriately named French Revolution.
TL;DR: Because we want to call it that.
