The video kinds hugs the Yorkist's nuts, when the reality was a lot more complicated and nobody was right. In fact, most everybody was an asshole. Here's the short version: English hate the French. Pro-war-with-France English faction hates Pro-peace English faction. Nevilles hate the Percys, and likewise. York (pro-war) hates Somerset (pro-peace). York's family has also long felt Henry IV stole the monarchy from them and they deserved the throne. English economy sucks, nobody is happy. 1422: Henry V dies the most Oregon Trail death possible, dysentery. Henry VI becomes king, problem is, he's not even a year old yet. Henry V was really good at hitting French people with axes, Henry VI as he grew up wasn't really interested in warfare, and the English loved nothing more than a king who liked hitting French people with axes. Other problem was the Hundred Years War with France was unwinnable in the long term for the English, but Henry V had fooled the English into thinking it was possible with his victories. 1448: Somerset gains power as Henry VI's main advisor, which comes with a corresponding loss of power for York. York hates Somerset. 1453: French beat the English, Henry VI falls mentally ill and turns catatonic, which York uses as a pretext to steal power from Somerset, succeeds temporarily until Henry VI wakes up. 1455: York murders Somerset, and his allies the Nevilles murder the Percy and Clifford family heads at St Albans. This starts several years of intermittent warfare, and a few leadership changes as York seizes power, loses it, seizes it again. 1460: Lancastrians (named after Lancaster, the historical holdings of the royal family, and includes allies such as the Percys and Clifford's son) kill York and his 2nd son at Wakefield battle, stick their heads on spikes. 1461: Yorkists, now led by York's son Edward get lucky at Towton and a snowstorm fucks up the Lancastrians' day. 28000 people die, Edward becomes king, Henry VI flees to Scotland. 1464-1470: Edward IV marries a lesser English woman instead of a Burgundian princess, now the Nevilles hate Edward and back Henry VI. Edward IV temporarily deposed, but gets crown back due to political pressure, then deposed again, Henry VI made king again... briefly. 1471: Edward IV wins battles at Barnet and Tewksbury, kills Richard Neville and Henry VI's son, then has Henry VI murdered. Edward IV remains king until he dies of an illness. 1483: Richard, Edward's youngest brother, claims Edward's marriage was illegitimate, locks up Edward's two sons, and they disappear, likely with a case of the murders. Richard III becomes king. 1485: Henry Tudor, a distant sorta-cousin to Henry VI comes back, kills Richard III at Bosworth Field battle, becomes Henry VII, starting the Tudor dynasty. Has son who becomes the infamous Henry VIII, and the rest is history.

Daniel if GoT really inspired from this, definitely Targaryen will rise to the throne in the end. because Targaryen is the ancient dynasty that once ruled the iron throne like the tudor.
It's more depressing when they say "War of the Roses is Game of Thrones" instead of "Game of Thrones is the War of the Roses". It's like saying that GoT was made first before WOTR happened.
Tragic that you forgot to mention the fact that George, the Brother of Edward IV, was executed by drowning in a butt filled with Malsey wine, even though Edward forgave him earlier.
We don´t have any proof that George was drown, only rumours. There were some executions by drowning in Scotland and France during the middle ages. So it´s possible. Edward regretted his execution but George was permanent threat, unstable, arrogant, ambitious with to many informations (pre-contract, etc.)
Well, Edward III, Edward The Black Prince, and Richard II are Plantagenets. The first Plantagenet King was Henry II who was the grandson of Henry I and great grandson of William The Conqueror, the vassal duke of Normandy France. The Platagenets were French nobles and when Henry I and his son died, Henry I's daughter married Geoffrey Plantagenet and campaigned against Stephen I who stole the throne. That's why England and France hated each other because Henry II and The English Nobles, who were French, still owned a lot of territory in France, about two thirds, controlling more territory than The French King. Philip Augustus, an ambitious prick who left Richard The Lion Heart in The Middle East to deal with Saladin, gathered his army to try an retake The English controlled French territory. Richard returned to France and launched a campaign to defend his holdings. When Richard died and under the reign of John Lackland, The French retook Normandy, Brittany, and Maine. Under the reign of Henry III, most of Aquitaine was lost and all The English had left was Gascony and I think Calais.
He suffered twelve different wounds that led to his death so maybe Henry got one in. He was also unhorsed and it doesn't require excellent swordsmanship to ride someone down.
I love Game of Thrones but I want to know more and more and more about this amazing war in our history without relation it with the show/book. Thanks for this video
War of Rose is actually one of the few historical aspects to inspire the "Song of Ice and Fire" book series which would later become a TV Show called "Game of Thrones"
I'm an old Yank. Just got back from Cornwall, Tewkesbury, etc., and now I find myself interested in this. I would have thought it crazy a year ago, but the wife and I fell down the pit of becoming interested in period British TV and quite frankly, it makes my brain get sore just trying to keep track of the names. Anyway, thanks very much for doing this. I go back and re-watch periodically when my wife is sleeping. This way, she wakes up the next day and thinks I've got a clue. - Thanks again!
Man I'd be awesome to see a video about Burgundy! Its demise, Philippe the Bold, its contribution to the Renaissance.... See my pic? The original country to bear was not spain, it was mighty Burgundy!
I was listening to the Blood and Wine soundtrack on my phone when I decided to play this video. As you may know, iOS pauses the music and plays the video, so I started watching it. Once I played it I was concentrated on it when I hear Wine Wars (the first song that played in the video) playing in the background. I was freaking out because I thought some update allowed me both to listen to music while watching videos but then I realized that Wine Wars wasn't the song I was listening to before playing the video. I deactivated the music app and replayed the video, the song was still there. Then I read the comments and saw that it was officially music from the best game ever. I'm so thrilled, problem is, I can't concentrate on the video. Anyways, great video!
this is based on the Tudor version of history, The discovery of the remains of Richard the III have raised a lot of questions of this last portion. As records concurrent to Richard the III's reign were actually very favorable to him, and Henry's actual Lancastrian descent is far more removed. The Tudors looking to establish their power base took measures to propagandize Richard the III into the monster and raise Henry the VII as a legit king despite a decent from a page who married the widow of Henry the V.
Frahamen Tywin Lannister is actually inspired by the Earl of Warwick; the latter was said to be the richest man in England, a political mastermind and nicknamed 'the kingmaker'.
If anyone wants a fairly accurate fictional account on this read the Sunne in Splendour. It’s a 900 page beast but it really fleshes Richard III and Edward IV as real interesting characters and getting to see basically the entire saga play out in all its glory/horror in 900 pages is fantastic
Your channel is destined to be huge! So glad to have found you. I would love it if you did a video on the Bronze Age Collapse - the first systems collapse of a globalised "world", back in 1200 BC. It's interesting, I promise - and you can cover badass bros like Ramses the Great, Suppiluliuma king of the Hittites, the Assyrians, and the Trojan War. Plus it's criminally under-taught.
HoscoFelix Oh that’d be great really, definitely a turbulent and chaotic time period for the “Old World” centered around the Mediterranean. The after effects were even felt all the way to China, would definitely love it if this great channel would also make 3 other videos about the Assyrian Empire’s rise and fall, the fall of classical civilization(s) and on an unrelated note the Zulu wars.
I feel like it's slightly important to note that George (the king's brother who who wanted the throne for himself) was married to Warwick's DAUGHTER, Isabel. Warwick's other daughter, Anne, ended up married to Prince Edward and then to Richard of Gloucester, who became Richard III. Say what you will about Warwick-- the man knew how to play his cards. He's not called the Kingmaker for nothing, kids.
No mention of Salisbury, the Percy's or the Battle of Mortimer's Cross. Edward wasn't a boy when he went to London, he was 6 ft 3 and had just defeated and killed Sir Owen Tudor.
James Spencer Could you tell me what happened to George, Edward IV’s brother? And why Richard III, his smaller brother claimed the throne instead of him?
@@БоянМихов-м9э George switched to Margaret's side for a bit during the wars because he wanted to become king and as such Edward had him executed on charges of treason (allegedly by drowning him in wine)

The history of Richard and the "princes in the Tower" was written under Henry Tudor's patronage, and made most famous by Shakespeare. But history provides no evidence that people were shocked at Richard's usurpation over his illegitimate nephews, no evidence of them being missing or imprisoned in the Tower, no evidence of their murder. Indeed,, it is more likely that Henry consolidated his hold on the throne by murdering the princes, and blaming it on Richard. History is written by the victors. Read: The Daughter of Time. It's a novel about a 1950's detective investigating the disappearance of the princes, but the history in it is quite solid. And it's also the consensus of historians of the period.
If the princes were only killed once Henry VII took power then why did Richard not disprove the reputation the Lancastrians had given him as a child murderer by publicly displaying the two?
Celestine Cassus Richard was killed in battle remember - a battle that, if I remember rightly, is documented as happening three days before it actually did to come before Richard’s coronation and make him the usurper
The daughter of time is a biased novel written by a Richard iii fan girl, not an academic description of the events. If the boys were murdered, Richard is still the strongest candidate for the deed. And regardless, he was still a usurper and actively took part in the defamation of his own brother and the ostracism of his own nephews; murderer or no, he was still a snivelling little shit lol

For anyone fan of The White Queen/The Hollow Crown/Game of Thrones and mangas/animes, an anime adaptation of the manga Requiem of The Rose King is in the process. I cannot wait to see this beautiful anime animated 🥀✨
i hear that witcher 3 music in the background
I've been playing it so long I hear it everywhere I go
same! easily one of the best soundtracks of all time.

apparently so did youtube :(
Warwick = Littlefinger
I honestly felt like Warwick was more like Roose Bolton, in that he supported the king until he married a commoner in secret (just like Robb Stark did).
Rambard noooo, Roose Bolton had already betrayed Rob during the battle of the blue fork. It is said in a books that the outcome of the battle didn't matter to Roose. If he won, he would be a hero. If he lost, he could claim the north for himself
Warwick is walder frey smh 🤦♂️
I can totally see how Gorge RR Martin came up with A Song of Ice and Fire from this
Yeah, Edward the cruel child and his mother Margaret?
Wonder who that inspired....
I chose to do a school project on the subject, and therefore decided to take notes from your 12 minutes long video, and I have to say, I've gotten a whole new understanding of just how much work you put into your videos. Keep up the good work, i love you're videos! :D
"In 1337 the game changed" I see what you did there
DannyBoy NeverDies Dosen't EU4 begin in 1444?
Gaurav Mishra no 1337 is leet
@@patrickmacready1779 what?
This truly is a game of thrones! 😉
Daniel What do you think inspired the plot?
Daniel The Tyrells took more than a little inspiration from this and Lancester and Lannister sure isn't a coincidence in naming ;)
Daniel if GoT really inspired from this, definitely Targaryen will rise to the throne in the end. because Targaryen is the ancient dynasty that once ruled the iron throne like the tudor.
Tedx has a video about rose war and GoT
razhor ryan Technicly only for 300 years. Before that, the kingdoms were seperate.
I love the current abundance of new history channels popping up on youtube, as a history nerd it is a dream come true
Literature teacher: The novel isn that confusing...
The novel:
I would've definitely liked to see this as a TV show or a movie!
There is a series The white queen then after that you have The white princesses
Gonna have to watch this a few times
Try the German Unification, there was some very good scheming involved.
Bismarck bashing everyone to submission, in the end?
So basicly, war of roses are game of thrones, only with no ice zombies (scotish) and no dragons
Lord Orio You do know George RR Martin used War of the Roses as a base for game of thrones :)
Aye but the Scottish are portrayed in GRMM's works, they are the wildlings from beyond the wall (Hadrians).
Yeah well we all pretty much know that by know (if you watch got), that war of the roses was a big inspiration.
its pretty depressing when people decide to associate the middle ages with an adult fantasy tv show on hbo...
It's more depressing when they say "War of the Roses is Game of Thrones" instead of "Game of Thrones is the War of the Roses". It's like saying that GoT was made first before WOTR happened.
Keeping up with the lancasters
Tragic that you forgot to mention the fact that George, the Brother of Edward IV, was executed by drowning in a butt filled with Malsey wine, even though Edward forgave him earlier.
We don´t have any proof that George was drown, only rumours. There were some executions by drowning in Scotland and France during the middle ages. So it´s possible. Edward regretted his execution but George was permanent threat, unstable, arrogant, ambitious with to many informations (pre-contract, etc.)
Drowning in butt sounds quite forgiving, to be fair.
I would like to write a thesis on this period. Thank you greatly Feature History for your epic take on this English saga.
You could do one on just the changes in armour and weapons.
This would be so much easier if there were more than 3 names back then (Edward, John, Henry)
All I learned from this is that, the French is always at war with England.
Margaret of Anjou is french lol
@@gfilmer7150 John Lackland lost a big part of Southern England too, am I right ?
@@Pratyush2124 John lost his territories in Northern France (Normandy, Brittany, and Anjou). His son Henry III lost the lands in Southern France.
@@gfilmer7150 no no, I'm not talking about territories in France. I'm talking about England. He lost a big chunk of Southern England. Is this true ?
@@Pratyush2124 No. The French King might’ve taken that territory during The First Barons War but it was most returned when Henry was crowned King.
I'm pretty sure Henry VII, a relatively inexperienced swordsman, did not personally kill Richard III
He suffered twelve different wounds that led to his death so maybe Henry got one in. He was also unhorsed and it doesn't require excellent swordsmanship to ride someone down.
Everyone knows Richard III was killed by Prince Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh aka "The Blackadder"
It was Rhys Ap Thomas
@@taptapuyo2714 You are correct, Sir. He was rewarded for killing King Richard the Third with a blow to the head delivered by his halberd.
That´s because Henry was just sitting on his horse and watch the battle.
10:06 " York Power was restored and the War of the Roses had finally ended in a Yorkist Vict- *PSYCHE* " I fucking love this channel
I love Game of Thrones but I want to know more and more and more about this amazing war in our history without relation it with the show/book. Thanks for this video
Isn't this conflict the pretty much inspiration (or among those that the book/series is based upon) behind the Game of Thrones.
War of Rose is actually one of the few historical aspects to inspire the "Song of Ice and Fire" book series which would later become a TV Show called "Game of Thrones"
The War of the Roses pretty much IS what a "Song of Ice and Fire" is just add dragons and ice zombies into the equation lol
So Henry Tudor is Aegon 'the young griff' Targaryen?
pretty much ( I found another book reader yay me )
CarolAnnePoltergeist he’s king in the north! A right proper lad
i think William the conqueror is aegon
@@parthivsen9219 nice catch never thought of that!
henry tudor is jon snow
both were kinda raised in exile
both turned out to be the heirs to the throne
I play EU4 too...
However it may be I'm pretty sure the other two were much more used than the Cross
Can you do a video on Alexander the Great's conquests or the Wars of his Successors?
Dan Carlin is your man.
John of Gaunt (Lancaster) is my 21st great grandfather, passed through his daughter Elizabeth Lancaster 😄
and you're ruining his legacy with that dreadful fake tan
This helped me so much with my homeschooling. Also, I love the edits and the comedy and the pictures. Really helpful rather than reading 27 pages.
this is based on the Tudor version of history, The discovery of the remains of Richard the III have raised a lot of questions of this last portion. As records concurrent to Richard the III's reign were actually very favorable to him, and Henry's actual Lancastrian descent is far more removed. The Tudors looking to establish their power base took measures to propagandize Richard the III into the monster and raise Henry the VII as a legit king despite a decent from a page who married the widow of Henry the V.
got to be my favorite Era In English History
A Lancaster always pays his debt!
Frahamen Tywin Lannister is actually inspired by the Earl of Warwick; the latter was said to be the richest man in England, a political mastermind and nicknamed 'the kingmaker'.
The delivery of this apparent historical documentary is diabolical.
Hahaha The scrubbings of the rectal variety hahaha
HoscoFelix
Oh that’d be great really, definitely a turbulent and chaotic time period for the “Old World” centered around the Mediterranean. The after effects were even felt all the way to China, would definitely love it if this great channel would also make 3 other videos about the Assyrian Empire’s rise and fall, the fall of classical civilization(s) and on an unrelated note the Zulu wars.
9:00 henry the fourth
Shows "henry VI"
HOTD really nails the cinematography! Can't for season 2 its going to be 🔥 with a heavy coat of🩸
This so far the only channel I ever saw that made dr.Phil look like a professional politician.
Yes, but where does House Blackadder fit into all of this?
6'4 actually 😉but yeah you're right on the other things
James Spencer Could you tell me what happened to George, Edward IV’s brother? And why Richard III, his smaller brother claimed the throne instead of him?
@@БоянМихов-м9э George switched to Margaret's side for a bit during the wars because he wanted to become king and as such Edward had him executed on charges of treason (allegedly by drowning him in wine)
George turned traitor and was executed.
Holy shit this is the first video to make this nightmare semi-comprehensible. Thank you.
While watching this video I was reminded of Game of Thrones for some reason. Decided to look it up, and the house/family quarrels of GOT mimic the War of the Roses. Thanks for the video!
The Lancasters send their regards.
Anyone else thinking the War of the Roses should have it's own TV show?
Aren Teodoro totally agree. they did a Tudors show so why not one about this
Game of Thrones was somewhat based on it
It does, though only Edward IV onwards. The White Queen & The White Princess.
the wars of the roses has two shows about it! one is the white queen and the other is the hollow crown.
Read Conn Igguldens books. Should be based off those.
It’s actually still quite controversial in England, people still ask you whether you’re a Lancastrian or Yorkist. It has torn families apart.
"It all goes back and back, Tyrion thought, to our mothers and fathers and theirs before them. We are puppets dancing on the strings of those who came before us, and one day our own children will take up our strings and dance on in our steads."
no1 gives a shit wdym
most people dont even this happened
You’ve never met an Englishman have you
Where do the Lannisters fit into the picture? I wanna know what happens to Tyrion!
I wasn't sure at first if this was witches music in the background but I'm thrilled it was. Great video and great music. Thumbs up from me.
What the feature did you just history me? I'll have you know I watched 300 feature history videos and flicked my bean to every second of it
So was the black prince really black?
No its cos he died
No he was named after the british WWII tank
he supposedly wore a suit of black armor.
He had black hair. People with black hair were described as black at the time as there were likely no or at most very few Africans in England then.
DAS RITE
this is basically GOT like the lancasters are the lannisters and the yorks are the starks and margaret as cersie and etc totally subbing dude love the vids cant wait to see more
SaberNoticsGaming187 GRRM Martin based the names ofo of them. And its more similair to the blackfrye rebellions in GOT (eg centuary long conflict between two branches of the sane family)

Can you do a video about the Yugoslav wars?
Or Balkan wars?
To much flamewars.
Declan Newton Every video about ethnic tensions will have a flame war in the comments but just because of it doesn't mean you can't make a video about it.
But it would be nice to hear his commentary on this topic.
done
And it's also the consensus of historians of the period.
originalhgc if that was true, why marry the sister of the princes of the tower?
If the princes were only killed once Henry VII took power then why did Richard not disprove the reputation the Lancastrians had given him as a child murderer by publicly displaying the two?
cool story, Richard still usurped the throne, disinherited his nephews and triggered the events that would lead to their murders.
Great video! I have some suggestions for future videos: Israelli war for independence. You could pick any of the Arab- Israeli wars, but this is the one that started it all.
The Great Northern War. the first time Russia smashed a European empire
The War of the Triple Alliance. The time when Paraguay thought it could beat 3 nations at once.
Haitian Revolution. the first time slaves were able to beat a European power.
The Russo-Japanese War. the war that allowed Japan to ascend to Great Power status.

lancaster = lannister?
MusicSprint1080p York=Stark
GoT is based on War of the Roses RR martin confirmed it, Lannister and Stark come from Lancaster and York.
The Red Wedding is also based on an event in Scottish history called the Black Dinner. Martin has often said how he takes inspiration from actual history.
And, when, you turn the GoT map upside do, you would see that it’s actually just a map of Britain and Ireland.
yorks=stark
