This is one of the best videos EVER.
now here's a man who loves his atlatl. and you're not mad, mate.
"Humans need to throw things!" And "A sh*t load of groceries." Omfg XD
We never screwed up.
Nothing that led to the creation of this video could be considered a screw up.
Izzy Garcia Why?
'I gotta go take a leak.' Most casual ending ever.
My social studies teacher showed us this today, he said it would either be the best video we watch all year or the worst. i still haven't decided yet.
i just spent two weeks making one, carved it by hand out of a pine block ~2' long. I then harvested bamboo, trimmed it, cut it to 7' & 8'. Then i straightened a piece or two over a flame by straightening everyother segment and then the joints. I then split a pheasant feather, trimmed it and superglued the three feathers around the base of the bamboo dart. Lastly i cut into the front end, into a joint area for support and hafted an obsidian arrowhead i knapped. went 110ft by arm, 183ft via atlatl
The fact that this video was required viewing for my college level Anth class delights me more than words can express.
"what this sums up to... a shit ton of groceries"
just awesome
Good lord I love this. I feel like this is a Bizarro version of a Steve Brule video. I never had considered the acceleration resistance and wave-forms of -why- the atlatl is such a dope piece of tech, just accepted it as a superior projectile platform. Thanks for the brain-food!
re: "if ancestors had guns..." You're right in some cases. We know this from archaeology: tthere's LOTS of examples of our ancestors destroying the local ecology to the point of wiping themselves out. The tribes who SURVIVED were the ones who adopted crucial survival tenets like "Don't eat human meat." and "Respect the environment because you're PART of it, bonehead."
we watched this in school today
This is the second best video I've ever seen.
Bob, you're a genius with the Society, and you're a genius here! Bravo!
Thanks for sending this. I love back to basics topics.
I never expected this to be shown in a College class. Very good video.
Love this video!
This video,in composition, mood and editing was stellar for it's age and it's quality coupled with such a low view count is hereby declared a bonified slept on classic... Just like the actual Atlatl itself. *Stamp*
i hope you know that this video made an after school event soo entertaining
Loved your presentation. Others may takes issue, but SCREW THEM!!
Well done sir!
Atlatl Bob= new favorite person.
Love it.
I want more of this guy.
Love this video! I am working on making my first atlatl. Been using YT as part of my research tools.
This guy is nuts .. you have to like him... i'm inspired to learn more about the Atlatl
Awesome video!
Very informative and entertaining bob ... greetings from the philippines .
thanks for explaining the importance of flexibility in the dart! I was doing it wrong. Could you tell me something about the effective range of an average atlatl?
The senior years are some of the most fulfilling. The increase in life span has lead to the development of complex music. Imagine if bach lived only 20 some odd years. Life would just be a lot of pain, hunger, death, and just a little sex. I don't plan on reaching my prime until fifty.
i hecka love this guy!!!!!!
"I gotta take a leak."
Classy. I love it.
"they said that i'm a mad sceintist but i'm not mad just a little disturbed"
bob Atlatl
I love this guy
this shit is beyond funny and informative. zteo my favorite things
That guy nailed the civilization shift!!!
Great video!
This is a actually hilarious
I liked this!
"This is a real fucking word."
Let me put this into perspective. Much experimentation has been done with AtlAtl's. Interestingly enough, comparison of rigid throwers verses flexible throwers of THE SAME LENGTH have been made.
THE OUTCOME: increased dart speed (projectile energy) in the flexible thrower.
If it were simply range or "freedom" of motion responsible, then the two throwers of equal length would produce equal energy, yet this is not the case.
Bows and crossbows both work with stored spring energy as well.
To put it simply, force = mass times acceleration.(F=MA) Since we are talking about the force imparted to the dart, we are talking about ITS mass (the dart, not the atlatl or the arm wielding it) times its TOTAL acceleration. Acceleration comes from energy applied directionally over a period of time.
This is true of ANY projectile from ANY device.
I am running out of room so will continue with another reply.
What he was getting at is that the bow and arrow lead to overkill, and was a huge step forward in the human progression to civilization. He probably would have preferred if we all stuck with the atlatl and stayed in touch with nature all those years ago.
hahah, that was a great video! 5/5 and bookmarked! ;D
lol "i gotta go take a leak" intresting way to end a video
Don't send him money
That was awesome
HAHA Thank you for getting me through this anthropology lesson haha
Hey it’s Atlatl Bob!!!!!
I was 5 years old when this video was posted
"what this sums to....is a shitload of groceries."
this guy rules.
@crispyfritters That's an interesting opinion. Are you sure that bows, atatls, and spears are three different weapons?
This was great! Kuddos!
We get to live well beyond our prime into the boring midlife and senior years!
this was so funny when he starts talking about the bow and how thats the reason for taxes hahaha
I made atlatl as a kid, we used river cane for darts and goose feathers for fletching...I'm an avid archer, but every once in a while I build an atlatl just to stay in practice.
Right on Brother!!!!!!!!
Let us examine this another way, for better understanding.
The arm imparts force to the atlatl equivalent to its mass and its acceleration at point of contact. The atlatl stores some of this energy equivalent to its mass and rate of acceleration.
The atlatl imparts force to the dart equivalent to its mass and its acceleration at point of contact. The dart in the same manner stores some of this energy equivalent to its mass and rate of acceleration.
Again, continued.....
how many of you came here because your history/anthropology/archaeology prof. asked you to? one of the better homework assignments iv been given tbh..
Both the bow and the rise of agricultural society came about roughly at the same time. And around the time that argiculurisation came about, cities expanded, and with cities, came taxation, because cities and towns are not cheap to upkeep or maintain. What he is basically saying, is not that they are related, or based on one another, but that they both came about around the same time and from the same indirect circumstances. Long Live King "Atlatl" Bob!
The addition of a weight to an atlatl was explained 4 months ago. you can change the optimal point of release by adding it.
-note: looking again, atlatl flex is much smaller than dart's.
"What this sums to ... is a s#!tload of groceries."
Buahahahaha! :D
As a life long arcger I am offended. I'll get over it though. I'm a traditional archer and I have a great interest in atlatl and darts too. It was the invention of the firearm that really messed things up.
If you are having trouble visualizing what I'm talking about, think flails, nanchaku, and trebuchets... If you analyze them with principle of least action, you will find that there is a point where most of the energy of the system goes to the ball.
The assertion that you are actually getting energy out of the bendy atlatl violates energy conservation. If anything, energy would be stored in bending the arm and in the harmonic motion of the projectile. In a practical sense lost.
Well considering the oldest bow ever discovered was only 15,000 years old which is around the time the people of the fertile crescent discovered agriculture during the Neolithic Era so I can see why this guy feels this way about the bow also another interesting fact is that the oldest bow found in the America's is only 3,000 years old yet they have found Atlatls way older than that in North America which means the bow didn't make it to the America's till 12,000 years after it was invented but it also makes since that the bow would only be 15,000 years old because that's when animals got smaller, faster, and more paranoid so a bow would be more useful in that situation since it's more stealthy
he never says why bows are bad
I wonder what would’ve happened if we never made the bow
legendary
I was hoping to see an actual demo of the atlatl. This video only gives brief glimpses of him using it in the dark, and it doesn't show the dart hitting anything.
arrows shot from a warbow didnt occasionally penetrate, it was a regular occurance. guns only quickened the demise of metal armor.
"what this sums to....
...is a SHITLOAD of groceries"
best. line. ever.
i love atlatl bob
I would say we screwed up as soon as we left the trees and started breading like rabits. True, the bow was more distuctive than the atlatl. However the big horn sheep in california were huinted to extinction. The weapon of chioce - the atlatl...
very true.
If you look at the flexible atlatl and dart system in an actual slow motion throw, you see that the atlatl and the dart are both bent at release. The dart's wild oscillations show that this is a fair amount of energy (which might have gone into translational kinetic energy).
Why then are atlatls/darts flexible? Could it lower the amount of rotational energy in the dart at point of release? Possible, but it's way more complicated than your statement.
4 statement 4 months ago see atlatl weights.
John Riggs: What's this about pink sheep?
I've been doing archery since I was about five years old, so I know a thing or two about it. The fletching isn't whats stopping the arrow, I assure you.
I heard this is preety effective if you attach a gun cartrige or some explosives at it's end, since it's preety accurate if you know how to use it.
I agree: religion and taxes suck but the atlatl is awesome. I have an atlatl made by him. It is much fun and a work of art.
Besides bullsh..ting about the Golden Age and harmony with Nature - awesome.
It might appear there's some correlation rather than causation... bow and arrow is just a product of technological advancement. It would have been used sustainably for many thousands of years.
Add to that the fact that finding suitable material is MUCH easier for a 30" arrow than a 72" atlatl dart.... Also, a small quiver of ten or so arrows is much easier to carry than a HUGE equivalent bunch of darts......
I do not think the atlatl's demise was usability, I think the bow gained favor due mainly to equipment material labor/cost, transportation, and portability.
hey he didnt explain why we screwed with the invention of bone arrow!!!??
it seems that many of the people who have commented on this video don't understand how Professor Perkins' is communicating. in the description it says "three [alter] egos collide" ...so some of the things he says are coming from different points of view.
DeMint started the bow and arrow
The atlatl predates the bow and arrow by over 13,000 years don't get me wrong I love the bow and arrow but I'm just telling you the facts of what came first
If you miss with your dart, then that big piece of lumber with an attacked point is far from useless. If a big bear is at the entrance to your home, then a spear is much better than a dart.
A spear also makes a good club, if you don't want to kill an opponent.
Atlatl bob can I buy one of your Atlatls
nice work
I have seen an African atlatl. That was different to that is introduced here. Dart was short (40cm) and thick,t had heavy, Ten cm length brass point, and on the othed end was another conical point, which accomodated to a conical hollow in the throwing tool. that tool was supple, flexible thin and light weight. instead of the dart's suppleness, tha throwing tool was supple. That was much more compact, than those long darts.
cool!!
yes they did. if you look up medieval weapons the trebuchet, vid at your local library the only thing stopping the arrow from going straight thru was the feathers. tahts more than enough to kill a man. and if you look up warbow on youtube you will see plenty of examples.
dude, they found atlatl heads in the middle of mammoth skulls, your bow couldnt do that
The sidebar says "atler egos." was that a Freudian slip, lol?
I wonder if there is an atlatl hunting season?
Absolutely fascinating weapon and we have Bob Perkins to thank for re-discovering its mechanics.
That being said, the atlatl was the weapon humans used to wipe out the Pleistocene megafauna (especially in N. America.) The bow seems to have been adopted as humans were increasingly forced to hunt smaller game; so much for that "in balance with nature" jazz.
Also (for what it's worth) the atlatl was likely the main weapon modern humans used to exterminate the Neanderthals (just my $0.02 mind you.)
lets compare the atlatl to the single shot musket, i'll place my bets on the atlatl
For shame, Bob, we screwed up when we stopped using the baton de commandement and ceased to dye our sheep pink!!
At 2:46; "Accelerates down range"
Ouch Atlatl Bob, a.k.a. "Atlatl physicsist", the dart has no way to accelerate once it leaves the Atlatl bearing.
@cainsummers mmmm been thinking about that one, a bow would take longer to make, plus you'll need to have some degree of skill in making them, bow's tend to be a standing platform, but more accurate?? If all your arrows weighed the same. A atlati would be quicker to make and master,,, i guess,,, and could be used in the cocked position whilst stalking or running??
Thoughts,,,,,,,,,,,,
A bow will penetratefurther than an atlatl, but nonewould penetrate a mammoth skull.
as have i. only i also fletch, forge arrowheads, and make bows as well. the arrow lost enough momentum only to have the friction of the fletchings stop it. thats still 24 inches of penetration. more than enough to kill a man.
atlatl atlatl atlatl atlatl
i like the bow, its a lot of fun. Speaking without experience Id say its probably a bit more accurate than the atlatl... Though the atlatl does seem fun, i think i shall make one soon
