Plus southern and south-western Bohemia (Domažlice, Třeboň, Tábor) - Prague is simply a city with people all over the republic and the original population there is lost and most parts of Bohemia have lost their German inahabitants after the WW2 with a lot of newcommers in 50s, so it is hart to keep some cultural heritage there.

A small correction, and an interesting fact: Svíčková would likely not translate as "candle sauce". The actual translation would likely be "beef tenderloin sauce" or "fillet sauce", as it is named after the beef part that is used for its preparation. The full name of this dish is "svíčková na smětaně" which literally translates to "beef tenderloin on cream".
The confusion arises from the beef part being named after a candle ("svíčka" -> "Svíčková") and etymological speculations about the dish maybe being named after it being eaten during the traditional journeymen's candlelight dinners.

    • @boredinczechia4382

I've read that i's called svickova because it looks like a lighted candle. It's a cone and it's cuts are butt, the center-cut, and the tail.

@@boredinczechia4382 That is likely why the MEAT part is named "svíčková" in Czech, yeah.
However, the meal is named after the meat, not the candle, so it makes much more sense to translate the meal based on how the meat from which it is made is called in English. As the meal is literally named " 'this type of meat' on cream".

Me as a Slovak tend to find the biggest difference in the mentality of the two nations. Czechs are much more reserved and controlled in their behaviour, which is definitely a sign of a strong influence from Germany and Austria, while the Slovaks are much more emotional and unpolished in terms of our behavour. And there's one more thing that I noticed during long years of collaboration with Czech people in my field of expertise (I work in marketing): the Czechs tend to speak A LOT about the work, instead of focusing on doing the work itself. This is not something to undermine Czech work mentality, don't get me wrong. But many times during endless 3-4 hour meetings with Czech colleagues, me and my Slovak pals were just looking at ourselves like: "ok, when do we actually start working?" :)

Thats also a cultural trait coming from Germany and Austria. We tend to spend hours creating systems and planning how to do the work to be perfect, while Slovaks just jump into it and plan on the road. Both have pros and cons. I have problems with this, because sometimes I overthink too much about doing something, that i end up not doing it enough.
Its also coming from economical differences - Czechia for centuries was based around industry, while Slovakia around agriculture. So Czechs had to use a lot of theory, planning, preparation and Slovaks just woke up and went working. Also as video says, Czechs are more stoic, reserved thinkers while Slovaks are more spontaineos, warm.

    • @casicadaminuto1
      @casicadaminuto1 2 года назад +5

@@Aggoenix that makes sense, actually. However, what I was referring to, was not really about Czechs being meticuluous and detail-oriented (which they are, definitely), but about their tendency to waste much time by just talking about a problem, instead of working on it, sometimes :)

Compared to other countries in the region they offer way more activities for kids and there are also hundreds of family-friendly restaurants and cafés with small playgrounds, even in smaller towns. The traditional dishes are also very nice with svíčková and bryndzové halušky being my favourites. The fact that goulash is a stew there is a bit weird for me, but its also great :)

Furthermore, I am from wine region Znojmo, and people here are more into wine than beer - the same would be in Mikulov and Slovacko. 🥂 But overall, you did a good job, thank you so much for the video! ❤️

You can try to go to Moravia (not only Brno please xD but I recommend - Olomouc, Pálava, Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Zlín...
Cuz the moravians have a more few things in common with slovakia, then the rest of czechs. We are more traditional (you need to visit in summer cuz of Hody which is event that a lot of cities and villages are doing with traditional folk dresses and music). we have drink Slivovica and actually before Czech kingdom there were Great Moravian Empire, where the center was in the border of cz and sk. In this era became this area christianized and it had border from now germany to now hungary. And because of Hungarians that came here from asia and destroyed this empire, the city of Olomouc was more in the west, so it don't get destroyed and now thrived. So soon the king of the cz kingdom choose Olomouc for the center of moravia.

I'm a Dutchman and my boyfriend is Dutch-Slovak and raised bilingually. He's my interpreter when we're in either Czech Republic or in Slovakia. In my experience, the Slovaks are easier accessible, friendlier, a tad warmer. The Czechs are more reserved.
However, the Czechs love it when foreigners speak their language. My boyfriend speaks broken Czech and his Slovak is okay; his Dutch is obviously the more dominant of his two native tongues. But every time I notice how much the Czechs open up when they hear someone speak in Czech.
One time we got a guided tour, at Moser glass factory in Karlovy Vary. The lady who gave the tour, initially thought we were German. I guess that in Czech ears Dutch and German really sound alike. This lady even spoke to me in German and when she learnt that my German is quite shitty (it's quite rusty, it's a language I didn't maintain well after high school was over) and that I'm Dutch; "Nizozemsko Pánska! Nejsem Němec!" (LOL) This lady defrosted at once, she was welcoming, cheerful, and really friendly. Certainly when my boyfriend started talking in his Czech-Slovak mix. We even got to see some special things which were usually not included in the guided tour.
I was especially charmed by the friendly and down to earth Slovaks.

Actually, you are both right and wrong.
In English language any European territory eastwards of the former iron curtain is called "Eastern Europe"
This is their terminology and they have the right to call it that way because usage of any terminology is purely based on concensus of people involved.
The fact that in our languages (CZ, SK) we call it differently only mean exactly that.
We call it differently than them and they call the same geographical area differently than us. Not a big deal.

A nice and true comparison. I am a Slovak and I wll add one more difference. For children (and people generally) in Slovakia Czech language is not a classical foreign language. Slovakia is mountainous country and therefore terrestrial broadcasting of TV is quite poor. Therefore almost every family in Slovakia has either satellite or cable TV. And since dividing of Czechoslovakia in 1993 Czech TV channels are obligatory part of Slovak broadcasting firms. Reason is simple: without Czech channel no Slovaks would be interested in any offer. Reason si partly in the past, when Czech Republic had 1 commercial TV channel 4 years earlier than Slovakia. But more important reason is much more channels in offer. So in Slovakia you can have about 100 channels and maybe 2 thirds are in Czech language. But no Slovak has problem do understand Czech, because they the follow movies and fairy-tales from the moment, they are able to follow TV (maybe 2 years of age). I can say a strange and paradoxical sentence, that during existence of Czechoslovakia the Czech language had been more "exotic" language than after dividing of Czechoslovakia. Reason is simple. During Czechoslovakia there were just 2 TV channels - 1 was federal (some programs were in Slovak and some in Czech language) and the second one was national. Now Slovaks have tens Czech channels.
In Czech Republic it is completely different. Slovak channels are not offered in broadcasting companies as a standard, so contact Czech people with Slovak language is much more rare.

So a very good comparison, quite accurate. One difference is missing. Slovaks tend to pull out more, brag more than true. I can give 2 examples as proof. More Slovaks will buy an iPhone and will always bring it to the table to show everyone that they have an iPhone, even if they are in debt and will be able to buy a maximum of 1 beer in the pub. The Slovak is happy to buy an Audi and will live in a one-room apartment with his mother. The Czechs would rather live alone and drive a company car which is usually Skoda.
For accuracy, I was born in 1982 in Czechoslovakia. My mother is Czech, my father is Slovak and I live in Prague, I have both citizenships. I have a Czech mentality. According to one test, more German. However, I must admit that over the last 20 years, both countries have undergone major changes and the younger generations are more European.
There is no point in commenting on the Czech president. He is a traitor to the nation, a puppet of Russian agents. At least the Slovaks have chosen a decent woman.
