When the owner of the bar I work at bought the bar 5 or 6 years ago, one of the bourbons we had on the shelf was Blanton's. The owner is a Maker's Mark guy but he said Blanton's was a good mid-level bourbon .....the packaging was unique to say the least. At the time I think his cost was $35 a bottle. We sold a shot for about $4. If I'm not mistaken Blanton's was a sponsor of the Kentucky Derby. Fast forward to today and Blanton's is almost impossible to find......and I've seen it being sold for upwards of $300 per bottle. We're back on the distribution list for Blanton's and I believe his cost is around $56 per bottle. But though we order 6 bottles a month or so....we rarely even get one. At $35 a bottle, Blanton's is a great bourbon. At $60 a bottle it's a little below average. At $300 a bottle, it's a terrible waste of money....unless you're a collector and want the neat packaging. NOTE: as you know, each Blanton's cap features a horse in a particular state of gallop....from a dead stop to full gallop (as well as a letter from the Blanton's name). It has been said that if you collect all the bottles....from dead stop to full gallop, and knock the neck and shoulders off a bottle of Blanton's .....the horse actually appears to be galloping. Haven't been able to collect them all yet.

I buy a lot of Wild Turkey 101 (it is my go to), and I find pretty big differences in taste between bottles even though it is a blend of barrels and not a single. I often prefer the 101 to my Rare Breed bottles, but it depends on the day and my pallet; I like the dryness of the 101. You've always been consistent on this, backed up with the blind tastings. For my part, like any crotchety old bourbon drinker would say, I've seen a serious drop in quality since, say, when I first started drinking (and absolutely loving) Blanton's around 2000. I would seek out Gold on trips to Europe - as an American traveling back to the US I bought more Blanton's Gold at La Maison du Whisky in Paris than I ever did Scotch! - also at Duty Free. Then later would grab Straight from the Barrel (I don't remember seeing SFTB until 2005 - maybe even much later?). Loved them both.
When I moved to Germany in 2019 Blanton's Gold and STFB were literally my first whisky purchases - probably 3-4 bottles of each across 2-3 different retailers (in Germany), but unfortunately from the same couple of barrels. They weren't only bad, but really, sadly - almost undrinkable. Scared that I'll get bottles from that same dump, I haven't bought another Blanton's in over a year, but hoping that the upcoming US releases are a return to form.

I was at BT last week and picked up a Blanton’s for $63. Only one per person every 3 months. Also picked up EHT SB for retail. Do yourself a favor and just visit the Frankfort area for a week. You’ll get a crash course in bourbon and pick up all sorts of gems. (ESP since you can’t find any of them in TX) That said, everyone should buy a bottle of Blanton’s at least once. Is it a premium single barrel? Depends on the drinker. Lots of other bottles to try that are readily available.

You hit it just right when you said that no two bottles, unless they came from the same barrel, are going to be the same. I certainty do not think anyone should be paying more than retail, I certainly never will, no bourbon is worth paying the sometimes outrageous secondary market prices. There are just too many great bourbons to drink. I do agree that Buffalo Trace, which you can find nearly everywhere for $30.00, is a close second to Blanton’s. I also love Wilderness Trail bourbon.

I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment. It’s a $25-30 bourbon in a $100 bottle. Simple as that. I’m not crazy about BT Mash bill 2 anyway, vastly preferring the MB1 (eagle rare, for example.) Where Blanton’s really shines is when I can pick it up at MSRP ($60 where I am) it makes a great Christmas gift to friends and family who can’t thank me enough. I can think of probably 15-20 bottles of whiskey in the $40-$50 range that I would eagerly buy before Blantons.

Then why is so hard to find? Why does it constantly get snagged up then? You can hate all you want but it’s a damn good bourbon at its MSRP price. I would not pay more than $60 for it. The main reason is consistency, especially among larger distilleries that have established brands that people expect to taste the same every time they buy a bottle. By blending whiskey from different barrels you can create and maintain that signature flavor profile. On the other hand, the inconsistency of single barrel whiskey is definitely a point of attraction and interest for many.

Vodka does not suck! Perhaps try Stoli Elit! Fantastic vodka; great flavor profile and exceptionally smooth. I challenge you to give it a shot and report back, I bet you'd be surprised how wrong you are on this this my friend!

@@big_whiskey7376 The weirdest thing happened. I was on a stock forum and I befriended a fellow investor. One day, I saw him telling another user that he would send him a bottle of Blanton's for free. The user said, "what's that?" I chimed in to the convo and told my friend, " hell, this guy doesnt even know wtf he's getting! I'd kill for a free bottle of that." He then said, "whats your address? Ill send you a bottle too. Blanton’s is not a true single barrel product. Even though Blanton’s is technically a single barrel product, they run those single barrel samples through HPLC/GC-MS as well as taste tests and reject barrels that are too off profile compared to previous releases of Blanton’s, so if you do like a particular release of Blanton’s, contrary to what Fred Minnick says at the end of the video, you will likely be able to find another one just like it.

So many big name bourbons are way over rated and too expensive. I’ll put Woodinville, Stranahan’s or 291 bourbon over any Buffalo Trace product.

  • @Temperdgrump

Never liked it. I prefered EC12, Elmer T. Lee, Rock Hill Farms, or SB EH Taylor. However, since the rest of you also ruined those, Blanton's will have to do because I can still find it.

Only things I know about Blantons:
    1. I've never seen Blantons in any stores I frequent.
    2. Only tried it once because I had a good friend who shared with me.
    3. I'm perfectly content drinking kirkland small batch, bib, and single barrel, imagining it's Blantons.

Blanton’s is so overhyped and it’s not that great. I worked at large liquor store and people would come in all the asking for “Blanton’s”, “Blarton’s” etc.I would show them something better on the shelf, and they would turn their noses up. People are ridiculous.
Paying secondary prices is asinine, totally not worth it.

Another thing to upset everyone that’s true knowledge is that blantons whether it’s blantons gold, red, Japanese are all the exact same blantons in the bottle yes the exact same blantons in the gold and such bottle as the single barrel $68 msrp bottle yet your paying more on msrp for it to have a slightly different design on the but with the exact same whiskey in the bottle as the original blantons. Also people seem to believe it taste different but go ahead pour two glasses of regular and a gold or red or whatever other blantons you have and smell them then taste them both with know they are the same in the bottle I bet it taste no different than the other. It taste different to some because the packaging says hey I’m more expensive I should taste better etc etc but in fact I have a $38 bottle of eagle rare single barrel I will choose over this bourbon any given day and never turn back.
