Definitely. Sasuke sacrificing himself for Boruto and Boruto being focused exclusively on saving Sasuke...that is great writing. It means that not only does Boruto have to save the world, he has to save it maybe at the expense of his own wishes to save his sensei. My boy is in the hardest of hard places and all he wants now is to get his life back. A life that he took for granted at every turn. This is what I always thought Boruto should be. Boruto being a rogue and having no help from his parents or friends. I thought that it might have been better if Naruto was forced to exile him for his own good, but damn if Kishimoto didn't come up with a way scarier version of that.
This makes me so glad to see your own character development in regards to Sasuke.
Saskues character build up is literally represented in the story. A tree grows strong, withers in the winter, then comes back stronger in the spring,while the new generation of trees begin to sprout and spread. How long does it take for a tree to grow to its full potential? Give it time....

@@dking6950 I agree its a breath of fresh air to have Sasuke have a personality, as one of the most frustrating things about Shippuden Sasuke is that he either had none or was just going insane.
One thing I would argue against is the idea that Sasuke is in any way written as a husband, but simply a father who now has the human emotions necessary to try and be a father.
Kishimoto has made it clear that Sasuke is not the romantic type, when Kishimoto approved of the filler version of the Sasuke Shinden, almost all the moments from the Light that were clearly written by SasuSaku writer were completely removed, incidents of Sasuke caring for Sakura were, like in Boruto and even sometimes Naruto, merely scenes of him being protective of one of his best friends, as Sakura is one of his closest friends and that is the end of it.
As for the ring scene, Sasuke proposed to Sakura as it was simply the most logical thing to him in accordance to rebuilding his clan, and then left Sakura and a newborn Sarada without a second thought for a decade. There's no romance.
Sakura was fully aware that Sasuke had no heart for romance when she faked a wedding photo.
He actually understood Sasuke's character after he made that 500k special video. It's hard to understand him when you watch Naruto just to finish it & start new anime or something.
He hates Teen Sasuke but not the last & Adult Sasuke, that's what we can see since then

Won't happen tho, sasuke is meant to mirror naruto so if naruto did do this sasuke wouldn't coat his susanoo because his susanoo is meant to mirror the kurama avatar or sasuke would get a replacement for susanoo and it just seems a bit complicated to me also because I think they're going to keep the plot point that you keep susanoo after u unlock the ms and it would just he weird to have sasuke inherit a single rinnegan which is what the shinju sasuke has as opposed to some combination of sharingan and rimmegan

I think it'd be completely ridiculous for Naruto to emulate the True Thousand Hands as a Kurama avatar. It'd be cool, for sure... but ridiculous. You may as well just call them Chakra Arms at that point because that's all they would be. The orange coloration of Kurama's chakra would be kind of a moot point by then.
I'd rather see Naruto just use the True Thousand Hands jutsu as it was, but maybe incorporate his tried-and-true Multi Shadow Clone into it. Or maybe give each of the hands a Rasengan to smash into the enemy, like a Many Spiraling Spheres attack that Naruto has done in the past but on steroids.
Boruto is the second or third, good character development, a great display of new and old techniques. You manage to empathize a little more with him.
Having Naruto and Sasuke at the end can also narratively "rhyme" with the Kage in the 4th war - the story is all about cycles.

You get it, I hated Sasuke in OG and Shippuden but through his relationship with Boruto and Sarada he has become one of my faves.
Not because of how much he fights or the big feats he does but because of how caring he now is with them.
He was central to make Boruto the man he is now, he cares so much for Sarada and Sakura and he has done so much to pay Naruto back for all the shit he put him through.
So do you hate OG Sasuke less now since you understand where his character development was going?

Its great that he grew past that as a character but it doesn't feel as dynamic or needed that he take that road to develop to where he is now as others did.
It felt more like a 180 shift happened after the war arc.
Compare that to someone like Zuko in Atla, Scar in FMA, etc where the development in linier and dynamic etc.

I think he has better and more interesting character development than Naruto just because of the issues with the village/society he attempts to address, which Naruto still kind of has no answer to.

Highkey I feel like this is the way Sasuke should have been written. Despite all of his hardship and despair in his life, he learned to appreciate the people he had, rather than the ones he lost. But unfortunately, Sasuke decided more power was better than coping.

Man this is why I love this channel. I don't really take time to watch anime or have a big interest in it but I grew up with the Naruto universe and have been obsessed since I was a kid. You dig deep, you go beyond what is right in front of our eyes, you see all the storylines in such a unique way to everyone else. Nick really went full circle in this video. From verbally ruining Sauksue every chance he had to openly defending him in Two Blue Vortex. That’s massive character development 🙌🏾
Sasuke has been one of if not the best character in naruto for a long time. I think the problem w sasuke is that bec is a secondary protagonist and we get a lot less of his story as compared to naruto and shippuden we see a lot of his actions superficially. In reality he is remarkably well written

The gohan take is eh. Gohan usually rounds the end of an arc on the upper end of power relative to everyone else except (but also even tho/when) he is a child. As like a 17/18 yr old he becomes like top 3 in the verse until super and barring fusions. And if you think buu absorbing is fusion then he actually is the strongest non fused character in z. He lives up to his potential but he fumbles closing altercations.

Has anyone gave the thought that even though it hasn't been given a "Look Here" moment, yet it kind of have with the revelation Boruto has learned Flying Thunder God. Who is to say he wasn't trained by Minato after his newly awakened eye allows him to either travel to the pure realm or to speak to those who are in the pure realm which would both show another way how Boruto trained himself so he doesn't take the chance of being put into the spot of having to use Momoshiki and proving his determination once again

completely agree that sasukes dinosaur story was good for fleshing out his character, he needed it, he was barely present in naruto compared to the rest and was only about revenge, he needs to develop beyond that, i'd even argue that his story in boruto could have been fleshed out more; i really love the one where he goes back in time with boruto too (even though its also a bit dumb) and gets to interact with jiraiya and respect him as a shinobi and not just a pervy teacher naruto used to have; also to talk with young naruto and realise the effect him leaving had on everyone. I love these moments and he is also one of my top favourite characters, I love his development and hope this tree thing does him justice, as with naruto.
I do think naruto and sasuke have sometimes been nerfed but defintely agree that if you're trying to protect someone or are fighting a new unknown enemy anything can happen no matter who you beat in the past. Power isnt linear and exponential, you can have good and bad days, strong and weak moments, and distractions like people you love maybe dying especially when you allow yourself to value it (past sasuke didnt value anyone or anything other than revenge) make things harder

I am a Sasuke fan but, naratively it makes sense to seal him away, for now. Obviously he is going to get his rinnegan back likely from the incomplete divine tree and his right arm. Which honestly would be awesome to see because with how skilled with the sword he is I was always curious how he'd fight with both arms since that implies he'd strike harder with both. Much like real life when you two hand a sword. Also he being healed and getting a 6 paths level chakra amp AGAIN would be insane considering he alreadu has significantly more chakra than the sage of 6 paths like he did at the end of the war arc around 3 x as much which is probably significantly more now.
That being said I am rooting for natuto to become sage of six paths 2 electric boogaloo but the youth of this story do need their character to be fleshed out too. Love the video 👍

Sasuke has the best character development in the story. His philosophy constantly changes in response to the ever-changing shinobi world and his motivations as a character are justified and compelling.
I’ll never understand how people hate on Sasuke and ignore his outstanding characterisation just because he’s “edgy” and “emo” .
Maturing as a person is realizing Sasuke was always the best character and we just hated him because he was mean and got in Naruto’s way

@@BeefLover11 Well said. I don’t get how people say he was “flip floppy” in his beliefs. That’s not true at all. Every time he changed his motivations he got new information.
At first, he wanted to work with his friends to become strong enough to kill Itachi. But then when Itachi beat him down so easily he realized it wasn’t enough and made the decision to go with Orochimaru.
Then when he realized he didn’t need Orochimaru anymore, he cast him aside.
After he found out the truth of Itachi, he wanted revenge against the leaf village.
And after seeing Itachi continue to protect the village even in death he wanted to know why Itachi would go so far so he talked to the hokage.
Then he came to his ultimate conclusion of ruling the ninja world as hokage and taking all the hatred upon himself. And to do that he first had to defeat Madara and Obito.
Finally, after seeing Naruto not willing give up on him in their final battle, he was brought back to their side and chose to believe in Naruto and Itachi.
I don’t see how someone could possibly think Sasuke was “flip flopping” without just completely ignoring the story.

If I’m being honest, when I first heard about Boruto I was initially worried that the sequel to Naruto was staring his son and his friends’ children.
The reason was because I knew that Naruto realistically should solve all of his son’s problems. And there shouldn’t be any threats because Naruto brought world peace.
And when hate on Burot was at its peak, I began to think that it made more sense that a sequel to Naruto should’ve taken place in an era where the original main cast was long dead. That way, the new main cast didn’t have, as nick put it, “a walking plot device” to solve all of their issues and have Naruto and Sasuke be Legends like 1st hokage and Madara. It would’ve also open the door for Edo Tensei versions of them.
But that’s what used to think. Now kishimoto has manage to make the story very compelling and keeps us on our toes every new chapter that comes out.

I love how Boruto was going to a downward spiral until Kishimoto went "fine I'll do it myself" and got back on the wheel.
It's truly unfortunate that actually compelling discourse about Boruto gets overshadowed or completely inhibited by the stuff Nick is referring to in this video.
I have friends who I occasionally give updates on the series to and when I explain key moments such as the reveal of Rasengan Uzuhiko, they get caught up on how absurd "Boruto uses the rotation of the earth to make someone dizzy" sounds. While, for me, the concept of Boruto building on the nature of the rasengan: harnessing the power of raw chakra through increibly controlled motion, by relating it to the ever spinning nature of the Earth, and then weaponizing it, is an incredible but subtle progression of the narrative. Thinking about him and Kashin Koji and/or Sasuke meditating on how Boruto can improve his arsenal, and the concept of nature energy flowing in a spiral motion comes up, and they relate that to the Rasengan and philosophy turns into one of the coolest Rasengan variations; just good writing.
I do feel like these narrative concepts should be more tangible, but that's an issue with all anime/manga. Theres an amount of digestibility that is required to both be palpable by a wide audience, and to be practical to produce.
I think JJk does some revolutionary things with its narrative that every shonen should reflect on in the future, but it can be hard for that to be noticeable through the lens of an action show.

lmao cmon bro there’s no way you think the writing is good just because Boruto made a new big Rasengan. You need more than that to have a compelling story.
Boruto is one of the best selling manga/anime in the world right now, it does appeal to a wide audience, it’s just that it’s poorly received by most of the original Naruto fanbase. I think the reason for that is it lacks what made Naruto special…there’s no compelling villains, the story feels poorly thought out like it’s being mostly made up as they go along, and the power scaling is so whacky that at the halfway point Boruto is already stronger than all the Kage combined. The traditional Japanese aesthetic is gone, and it’s stuck in this weird in between cyberpunk aesthetic that it feels like it wants to be but doesn’t fully commit to….
There’s no more cool jutsu because everything just gets absorbed or negated, the fights are just 90% Taijutsu, none of the supporting cast can even contribute anything because of the bonkers scaling…these are just a few of my complaints but to each their own.
@@donovan4222 I didn't think it was necessary to explain that giving a single example doesn't mean that I only have a singular reason for finding the narrative compelling.
The things that you described having an issue with would contribute to a much better discussion than what the loudest critics are voicing, but I still think they miss the point in some ways. The scaling relative to Naruto was very clearly noted by Nick in this video. This era is very intentionally supposed to be rapidly surpassing the previous. I'm not going to restate all of Nick's points on that.
With regards to the relevance of the side cast I do largely agree. Boruto and Kawaki's story is compelling, but the rest of the cast feel like they haven't really had the time or space to come into their characters.

@@TooFast4uzz Sure I agree that fans are dumb and they will usually be bad at criticizing stuff. Star Wars fans are a great example of moronic fans hating bad movies for all the wrong reasons. But I think there are still plenty of people laying out legitimate criticisms of Boruto.
I don’t think every generation really surpasses the previous in Naruto because the strongest characters in the series up until Naruto were Madara and Hashirama, who were characters from like 4 or 5 generations ago. Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine, but I don’t like when the MC is near instantaneously the strongest character in the verse, especially when to get to that point the MC had to surpass Naruto and Sasuke, who are supposed to be god reincarnations that spent the entire series building up to be the strongest of all time. Then they just get surpassed by a 13 year old in one generation? I don’t like that. I would much rather have Boruto and Kawaki surpass Naruto/Sasuke at the end of the show if they are going to do that.
Also, similar to JJK, I’d rather see them just have Naruto and Sasuke busy doing something else or have an in story reason for why they can’t help Boruto in every fight, rather than just making Boruto surpass them this early. I think Naruto/Sasuke should be treated similar to Gojo where they are a benchmark for power in the story and no one really compares, while Boruto has to deal with lesser threats and work his way up to their level. Now that every villain is Otsutsuki level, it just feels ridiculous that any regular Shinobi like Sarada or Mitsuki or Shikamaru can contribute to a fight at all.
You're the reason I came back around on Naruto and part of why I can look at Boruto without scrunching in disgust (The Special Story in Connections helped me like Boruto along side you). I'm not a Sasuke fan in OG and Shippuden. Glad you make content to inform those about stuff that they didn't know like myself.

2:35 From what I'm hearing I think people don't want a character's consistency to be sacrificed for character development.
Like, if you wanna take a character in a direction, do so, but don't weaken the character, strengthen the adversary. It's unsatisfying to see him struggle with what we know he can do, whether or not he has to because Kishi said so.

I personally, which I know many disagree, don't think Sasuke is really struggling past what he should be struggling with. The fact of the matter is the dude is also Chakra drained, which I get it, is absolutely annoying. But he is constantly using space time abilities which have from the beginning. Been mentioned to require an absorb amount of chakra. I mean if we base it off the statements from the 4th GNW, then even naruto would have only enough chakra to use the ability 3 times. And he has more chakra then basically everyone combined.
The being said. I do think Sasuke fights are underwhelming. But I don't think it's as bad as people say. Concidering the show itself is more underwhelming then OG and Shippuden Naruto fights. They don't have the Rizzoli anymore XD

Can we talk about how all of the villains in Boruto absolutely pale in comparison to Naruto? They all have the same generic bad guy personality with no interesting philosophies or powers whatsoever. Going from villains like Pain, Orochimaru and Madara to bumshiki and dumbshiki and code the doormats is pretty bad.

Technically, he isn't meant to escape the tree, it's not like he used some Jutsu to regenerate, he was attacked and stuck in a tree. I feel like the only reason Sasuke's actual body would regenerate, is for the shinju, not Sasuke.
Honestly, the biggest issue with Boruto is how quickly it scaled up the threats that Botuto and his team would face. It makes their powers feel less earned because they surpassed what basically anyone in pre-Shippuden Naruto could do basically by their own chunin exam. I like the idea of having the looming threat of the otsusuki going on in the background while Boruto and team face off against threats more their level. Orochimaru and the Akatsuki were a thing since early Naruto, but Naruto and Sasuke basically only fought them to get jobbed or show how far left they still had to go. Kakashi and Jiraya would stand off against them, the third Hokage fought Orochimaru, it wasn't always Naruto facing down the big bad. That was part of what made OG Naruto so good. It clued you in to the bigger threats without ever pretending Naruto would be much more than a distraction. But that doesn't really work on the scale that the Otsusuki are at, because they aren't gonna be releasing Naruto or Sasuke from a jutsu just to dodge a kunai thrown at them, and they're not gonna test the kids for their own pleasure and let the kids go all out, or crush their confidence to convince them to get stronger. They're not gonna give Boruto the chance to flex what he can do cause they wanna put a curse mark on him, he's already got his Karma and Momoshiki didn't search Boruto out to test him for that. That's the thing, they brought the kids into the fights with the big bads and had to make it seem like they weren't totally worthless, so it made the bosses and Naruto and Sasuke feel weaker to not be able to one shot the enemies that were unable to one shot the kids.
There was a lot of scaling difficulty with early Boruto cause the writers clearly wanted to establish threats that continued to usurp the power levels of the prior threats from Naruto, but it makes the show come off like if Naruto were to be dragged along with Hiruzen in his fight against Orochimaru, or worse. Maybe as if Kakashi had brought Naruto from the end of the Land of Water arc to the battle against the 10 Tails during the 4th Great Ninja War. Naruto has had a problem with scaling really ever since Naruto had to fight Shukaku and win, and especially as the power levels of Shippuden continuously scaled up and up on an exponential curve. Boruto really needed to take its time rebuilding the curve from the ground up, but it overshot its load, just by having Boruto always there with the God tier threats and not instantly getting taken out or used as a way to finish off Sasuke and Naruto from the word go. Especially with the speed feats people claim Naruto, Sasuke, and their enemies supposedly have. I like that Sasuke got hurt protecting Boruto, but he should basically be constantly having to protect Boruto or Sarada whenever he's fighting within a mile of them cause their enemies should be constantly trying to exploit Naruto and Sasuke's weaknesses of having to protect others and be defense for them. It's one of the reasons I liked the standoff with Code where Naruto was held back by him threatening Shikimaru the whole time. It'd be a boring show if that was literally every fight, but it honestly should be whenever anyone who isn't Sasuke, Sakura, or a handful of others are at the scene of the battles

Scaling has been an issue with Naruto since around Pain's first fight with Jiraiya and the introduction of Susano'o to me, just cause they had to escalate so far above what happened in those fights by the end of the war (and to make the very few enemies that were Obito, Madara, and Kabuto a legitimate threat for all of the villages and the samurai). But it was fine cause the characters could naturally flow into it. Bortuto resetting the story with a bunch of Genin really had an issue because it was also continuing into that post Kaguya level scaling

To be honest is a little weird that Sasuke was captured.
For example when Boruto lost his eye protecting Sarada looked really forced. Sarada could easily block that strike or Boruto as many other times. But probably Code ambushed Boruto and Sasuke.
I agree, just because character development is happening doesn’t mean it’s being executed well. Thats what Nick seems to be misunderstanding.
I mean Konan almost won against Obito , if not for the plot device called izanagi. Or how Madara was backstabbed by Zetsu which I think the weakest nammed character I have seen in Shippuden.

In Shippuden there are several moments where I really hate Sasuke but in Boruto he is spectacular, apparently he only had to be a father to be a good character

I don’t think anybody want Sasuke to have the spotlight for a major battle but people also don’t want him to be the embodiment of an out of chakra meme.
I think Boruto went behind Sasuke's back/disobeyed orders and went to go prematurely fight Code. I think during that time Boruto was getting his ass handed to him being unable to tap into Momoshiki power due to fear of losing control. Boruto probably pulled up to Code and his army and Sasuke jumped in and fought Code. I think Boruto was the one who originally almost got bit by the grime but Sasuke maneuvered him out the way and took the blow/bite from the grime. I think Sasuke had a good 3 to 3 and a half years to train Boruto and then once he became a tree Kashin Koji took over as Boruto's master.

Sasuke’s character is not being fleshed out very well in Boruto at all. Just because they are doing character stuff doesn’t mean that the character stuff is done well….his mentor role to Boruto feels very forced and kind of clashes with his role with Sarada. He barely has any conversations with Boruto, and doesn’t teach him much of anything. It doesn’t feel like Sasuke and Boruto have developed much of a meaningful relationship at all, but the time skip just assumes they have one.
The relationship with Sakura is also done very poorly…we had 2 entire mangas of Sasuke treating Sakura like sh*t only for them to somehow get together at the end, and then Sasuke is just a deadbeat dad for 15 more years…but we are expected to believe Sakura has some deep love for him? It just makes Sakura’s character seem pathetic and Sasuke seem like a d*ck. And yeah, I know this was supposed to be addressed in the Jurassic park Sasuke novels, but you shouldn’t need an extra light novel for 2 of the main characters of the series to have a believable relationship…if the manga is relying on light novels for character development I don’t think that’s a sign of a good manga. They should be extra reading for people who want to know more details, not required reading for the relationships to make any sense.
Yeah that's basically where I'm at too. Tbh I think I've just grown out of this franchise, a lot of it is not Boruto's problem per se but creative decisions made long ago back in OG Naruto and Shippuden that might be impossible to overcome for some viewers like myself. I'm looking for a kind of story that wasn't there to begin with.

There was absolutely no point to make Sasuke this mentor character when he has a daughter . No sense whatsoever. Boruto had a whole father he could have developed a relationship with.
@@withlove312 I think the biggest problem is that it feels like Naruto was supposed to end with Shippuden, but they rushed out a sequel without even having a story planned out and are kind of just winging it as they go. Naruto felt like it was constantly building toward a final climax with a definitive ending, Boruto feels like they are just throwing stuff at the wall hoping something sticks.
Also, I think the worst part of Boruto is the lack of interesting villains. One of Naruto’s biggest strengths was the villains with complex motivations, interesting philosophies/personalities, and unique power sets. Now that’s all gone and the villains are just generic alien cyborg bad guys who punch hard and want more chakra. It just feels like Boruto forgot everything that made Naruto special.
And the power scaling is out of control, which despite what Nick says, does matter. Imagine how whacky it would be if after the timeskip Naruto already had sage of six paths powers from training off screen, and just dog walked the akatsuki. Pretty unsatisfying, and that’s how Boruto is lol

This is a good thread. The best they did was the parent/child day episode because it showed how Sarada's feelings could affect him, and it makes sense that they would.
Unfortunately, the entirety of Naruto simply wasn't well planned out. That's why in the og series, Itachi used tsukuyomi with base sharingan, because mangekyo wasn't fully developed yet. It's also why we went from the trichotomy of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, to Naruto and Sasuke being reincarnations of the 2 sons of a demigod-like figure, and Sakura. The fact that so many things have to be made up for in mini-arcs and whatnot just kinda proves that the author isn't good at managing lots of different characters long term. Or romance lol.
I’m not sure if the next generation is always stronger than the last really fits in this, madara, kakashi, itachi, hashirama, and generally anyone who survived the first 3 ninja wars are examples of this. When madara comes back even even remarks that the average power of shinobi has declined since he was alive.
