Do not apologize for talking about running your marathon. It requires a lot of dedication, discipline, and courage to put in the hours required to train, run, and recover. I know. I've run three. I was 50 years old when I ran my first. Congratulations, Luke. Your family and friends are especially proud of you. Stick your chest out and strut like a peacock. You deserve it!

You want to line the planter with a weed barrier & put small stones or gravel in the base. Lining with plastic will retain the water & will get water logged & kill the plants.

Be careful when buying garden tools, the inexpensive ones can be a false economy, they are not robust, I've discovered this to my cost! Take out a few of the lower branches of you big conifer, this will tidy it up and highlight the stones underneath, I saw Chris Beardshaw (famous gardener) do it on TV, what a difference it made. Happy gardening!

The planter box is very nice. Maybe if you ever redo it, you could use landscape fabric at the bottom. I would be just a little concerned about the runoff water staining your patio tiles from the soil because the planter and pots are sitting directly on the tiles, but it looks very pretty there. And, if you do start having issues, you can buy pot feet to lift the pots up a bit and maybe some bricks to lift the planter. Your outdoor table seems very nice! I hope Zara is feeling better by now.

You can grow plants under a fir tree you just need to do a lot of research and plant the right things. I moved into my house 8 years ago and there was fir tree in the corner with a big dead garden under it (nothing but weeds and fir needles) and a gardener friend told me to get the tree chopped down. But it provided so much privacy I just couldn't so I did a load of research, threw a load of compost under it, planted hostas and ferns and violets and heuchera and azaelea and helebore and spider plants and every spring I add more compost and plant a load of impatiens and begonias. It is the most lush colorful area of my garden now and I adore it. Maybe just remove a few of the lowest limbs on yours to give any underplanting a bit of space.

Sometimes when you tube channels grow they become more about advertising and grabbing the latest thing which is out of many peoples reach, wants and desires. Love your channel so calming and lovely to watch and learn from ! Deb x

I would take out the plastic and use a proper liner such as Hessian, plus stand the planter on small wooden blocks to raise it off the slabs and encourage proper drainage, your plants will appreciate it, it won't take 5 mins to empty and redo it, also Bunny Guinness does not advocate using stones in the base as the soil dries out quicker. 🤗

Would be a good idea to top the conifer to keep the height down. Nothing will grow under conifers so a good idea to put slate down. Cotswold stone is expensive so wood bark may be another option? With a sore knee the worst thing you could do is digging in the garden, take it easy.

Re that connifer/fur, i think it would be a good idea to take the lower branches off with a lopper or saw, it'll let the light through, and give a sense of space. It IS a good idea to prune and shape them, and is also nice for neighbours hecause theyre stuck with a tree they havent chosen too, with all the needles dropping etc. I only say it because i had them, amd have lived with neighbours trees too.

    Lots of great ideas!
I would butt the end of the table against the house, about 2 inches away for airflow, right under the kitchen window, leaving the chairs in the same placement.
That way you can hand things straight out the window to the table.
Then put the new wooden planter at the other end of the table, towards the grass, with the solar lights in it among the plants.
It makes a sort of definition of the table space.
With table moved in, bring out all the pots you had against the house there, and they’ll get better light.
Don’t put gravel round the tree, but use bark mulch instead, if you haven’t already done so.
    Better for the ground.
Gravel gets lots of weeds and changes to ugly colour.
Mulch is softer looking, not so jarring esp if you’re going to put gravel elsewhere.
Also, perhaps “limb up” the tree, ie cut off some of the lower branches to tidy it up a bit and open up the space.
Maybe up about 2 feet off the ground.
Less places for animals to hide under it.
Use a saw or loppers that you have cleaned with alcohol first to prevent disease.
It’s going to be a wonderful garden…..so clean since you washed the slabs!
BTW: there is no such thing as “just going to look only”, at garden centres…..😂😂
    ❤ from 🇨🇦

Yes my partner made 3 similar troughs to attach to our pagola and we lined ours , constant rain and wet soil would very quickly rot the wood if not , also as advised layer stones or gravel inside the bottom before adding the compost , also i would advise raising off the floor ever so slightly with some little pieces of wood or similar ❤

Hi Luke, love the wooden planters, just a thought when it comes to putting the compost in ,how about putting a couple layers of cardboard in the bottom and fill about half with sticks and pine cones that you can collect when you take Magie out for a walk in the woods and then fill the rest with compost, this way compost will go further and you can always top up with more compost when and if needed,
Large containers could also fill so much with broken bricks to save with compost but be mindful that can be heavy if wanting to move pots or planters around x

Just one bit of advice that you may not need now, concerning weed surpresser. There are lots of different grades and prices, the cheaper thinner types will eventually let weeds grow through, do yourself a massive favour and get the thickest best quality you can afford, it will save you so much work in the future. Idea! Have a bring a spade party, and get help digging out that area for the gravel! payment can be a BBQ and some beer! THNX for the Vlog I still enjoyed it even tho I am a week late seeing it! x

Think garden content is my favourite! Can’t wait to see you and Zara outside at the table rose in hand! Looks great so far.
You can get original Victorian edging tiles from reclamation yards. Not too expensive but in keeping and will last forever. X

Hi Luke. Nice to see you and Zara are feeling better! I love the informal/slice of life vlogs. As far as talking about the marathon, I was a runner so I completely understand how it makes you feel. I smile every time I see some running. I really miss it and you are inspiring me to get back at it.
Love the garden box. It would look lovely if you added some tumbling flowers around the edge. A pop of colour, if that suits your taste.
Was so nice to see you and Iwan getting out and about. Have lovely week!! Looking forward to your next cooking video

Firstly, congratulations on finishing the marathon! Love the idea you have with the tree and the gravel. I would suggest taking the lower branches off and opening the bottom up. It would a) make it easier to do the gravel and b) you would see through the garden but not loose privacy. Isn’t gardening fun?? Feel better soon Zara, and hope your feet heal quickly Luke xxx

Luke please be wary about putting the Laurel in the ground unless you keep it trimmed back because they grow into a big tree

Hi Luke glad to see you back up and running 😂 pardon the pun… re the conifer, they sap all the moisture out the ground grass will die further in as the roots get bigger, they get so tall over time if you don’t keep lopping them.. in fact there a headache if you plan to stay there long term… plenty other options for screening your neighbours im sure xxx
