Hello Luke greeting from Melbourne. Loved your vlog but some pro tips for you but first congratulations on completing your outdoors project.😊❤. It would be a wise idea to take the eucalyptus out of the bed as soon as possible and put it in a large pot. The reason is, it's a water theif and it will steal all the water from the plants in the bad and lawn and it will kill everything in the process, it will also send down a tap root and if it gets Into any below ground pipes it can cause thousands of £ worth of damage so it's best to grow it in a very large pot and sit the pot on a concrete paver. Next the lovely privit bush. In this part of the world it's classed as a noxious weed and not allowed to be sold by garden centres any more. Mainly because when it flowers it can cause major reactions with people who have asthma or hayfever so I would gift it to the plant recycle bin and chalk up the experience. Lastly your lovely conifer tree. Best to top it off, meaning take the central trunk tip and cut it off/out. This will stop it heading for the sky and becoming massive, to massive for your garden. Conifers are also toxic to other plants their needles make the ground very acidic so other plants struggle to grow in their presence. Next lift the base skirt of the tree up, (take out a few of the lower branches) but be careful when doing this unlike other trees when you cut a conifer it will not regrow back in the same location. By doing this you will let the light in around the base and you could nd in some fresh compost and plant some pansies, putunia, Lilly of the valley or violets in your ice le. Lastly your conifer likes a good feed and an old fashioned trick is to dissolve a tablespoon of marmite in warm water in a large 10 litre bucket, let it cool then pour it around the truck slowly a couple of times a year, it works wonders ( this tip came from a leading nursery man). Look forward to what you do in the house next, cheers and have a great week.😊❤🐝

Hi guys WOW spectacular looking garden, well done you two, you’re going to so enjoy chilling out there! Love the fire pit… bargain, tip for you put an old grill grid on the bottom, stops the burning through the metal gives you some extra life in it, also put some compost & manure mix in your borders 25:4 each year, I use a comfrey mix & nettle mix for my garden, it’s free! Put each in a bucket cover with water leave for weeks it will stink! When smell has gone bottle up, dilute & feed your pots & plants, Epsom salt mix on the laurel bush makes it grow quicker… a very slow one that! lol
Hope you got a melton pie, I wish I’d known you were mins from me, I would have filled your car with plants for you. 🥲but big pat on the back guys 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

You need another medal for moving that amount of gravel without a wheelbarrow. Good job. The plants will soon need to be spaced out. We are all guilty of wanting to fill space but shrubs can quickly take over, watch the laurels. Finally, only trying to help ,teak oil - Dispose of any rags used to apply it carefully as it is flammable. Thinking of wheelie bin👍

Keep the shed! Paint it black to joosh it up. You will find it super useful to store things in, or use it as a ‘greenhouse’ to grow your seeds on when you start growing plants from seeds (it’ll save you stacks)! In time, you may want to turn it into a studio. Endless options.

Hi Luke! Aww...why do I always get so sad when Mags and Ivy need to part ways again? 😔 My heart always gets heavy for them. On a brighter note the yard is coming along nicely and love the way it looks with the white gravel and black fences. I would suggest trimming off some of the bottom branches of that tree so that the trunk & new border you put around it is more visible. Will you be incorporating any raised planter beds for herbs & veggies? Have a fab week ahead guys! Much love from Fort Worth, Texas! 😊🦋☀️

Dusty Miller, Lamb's Ear, and Artemisia are nice uplighting amongst the plants. Their light chalky foliage brightens the area and fills in quite nicely to shade the roots of its neighbors, too!
The DM is a leaf like plant with texture and beautiful to cut for and instantly diverse and attractive arrangement.
The LE is so soft that it is most certainly an appropriate name! It adds softness to the beds.
ART grows taller and while looking rather prickly, they are as soft as silk. It's like cotton candy. Pretty when planted a little further back towards the fence for back light (read up on that, though, as I am not sure about the black fence).
I love them for their beauty, texture, and light the bring to my beds! And, they are perrenials!

Your fire pit I had one similar and every time it rained it would fill up and it went rusty I found drilling a few small holes in the bottom. It kept it from filling with water, the ash is good mixed in the soil great food. Crushed up egg shells are also good xxx

If you've still got the plant labels I would urge you to read them regarding the width and spread of each plant.
Looking at your boarders I'm concerned the larger plants like the laurel will establish much quicker (laurels are quite thuggish) and will dominate the smaller items. Personally I'd move those Acers because they are so small, and there looks to be quite a lot of dead in that Leylandii and that will never grow back and look good.
Also check on the soil requirements for plants.
I'd suggest checking the ph level of your soil - you can get kits (and I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it were different under the Leylandii to the rest of the garden).
Lastly, if you are keeping the fire pit outside, it needs drainage holes to prevent water collecting in it and go rusty.

    • @katbar6066
      @katbar6066 3 месяца назад

Didn't notice your comment at first but 100% agree about moving the Acers. I wasn't sure if maybe they were different varieties to what we get in Australia but if not they certainly need to be moved before the roots get set. Luckily they have plenty of room to move them to a more suitable position- all par for the course while learning about planting.

Making your garden your own is so satisfyingly! When you buy plants, make sure you are reading the tags for plant growth size and planting spacing. If you plant too close you'll spend the next few years redoing the work. It is hard to do, but leave more space than you think you should.

You've been bitten by the gardening bug and will find yourself wanting MOAR plants. Please please look into shade gardens for under your conifer. It's such a rewarding type of gardening, creating a lush jewel where you wouldn't expect to be able to garden. I've just purchased a bunch of hosta and clivia to add to mine so I'm looking forward to beautifully variegated hosta leaves and bright orange clivia flowers in spring. It's winter here in New Zealand but I've still got loads of color and interest with a pink/purple variegated ajuga and a load of stripey spiderplants. In spring I'll pop in dozens of annual impatiens and have a riot of flowers all through to autumn. Please at least put in some impatiens under your conifer, guarantee you'll love the bright spot in the dark under the tree - especially with your black fence it would look stunning

Well done you guys, it is all looking so good! You will find if you do not put something to seperate the flower bed and the lawned area, that grass will encroach over time into the flower bed, and you will be forever haveing to pull it out. Might be an idea to get something put there, I liked the brick idea. Old terracotta roof tiles if you can find any will look good too! Anything really as long as it is good and sturdy and does the job of seperating between the two. Keep up the good work, you're doing well x

Random suggestion; since Luke has mentioned wanting to remodel the kitchen down the line to make it more connected to the outdoor dinning room and make the space more conducive to entertaining, perhaps as an in-between step, he could switch out the kitchen window to make it a pass through window? I've seen other houses with these windows in the kitchen and they open so that drinks and dishes can be passed directly from kitchen to the outdoors. This could allow Luke to cook while guests are in the backyard and not feel separated from the party. I can imagine him mixing up drinks and passing them out like it was his own personal bar! Now, I don't know if this type of window is too drafty to be useful in the British climate, but it might be a way to temporarily get some of the connectivity they're looking for.

Love your garden, looks neat and tidy. Just one thing of advice: The trees you planted need more space in between, and it is difficult to replant them further apart when they have grown. Just plant some annual plants to fill the gaps!

Hi Luke love the garden but I felt I had to tell you that you would be silly to dispose of your shed . Think you should repair the roof and then paint it black and it will fade into the background, you will need it for storing your garden furniture for the winter your table and chairs need to covered so the shed the perfect space also some plants need to go under cover ( I’m talking about some of your pot). Hope this is an idea you will think about❤

Greetings Luke - That young eucalyptus - I don't know how it will grow in the UK, but if its anything like the way they grow down under, it has every chance of being a Triffid. It can become a very very big tree, very quickly (and that includes an extensive root system). At the moment those leaves appear to be juvenile form - they will change shape as it "adults" So keep an eye on it and if it starts to get excited - it may be better contained in a tub.

Garden is looking fa-bu-lous, well done Luke and Zara. 👍
Have you considered lighting yet? You can definately sit out later into the evenings if you have some lighting.
My house is on the market and after 40 years living in London I am about to move home to Ireland and have just had my offer on a cottage by the sea accepted so I'm already planning what I'm going to do with my new garden which has a raised terrace seating area as it's built into a hillside.
I've been looking into how to put lights around the terrace and have come up with the idea of using metal electrical conduit as poles, as it is far cheaper than buying ready made garden poles which are really expensive.
What you need and how to do it :-
As many metal conduit pipes (10' × 3/4") as you need to go round your space.
Rustoleum automotive primer spray paint to paint it blacking if that's your colour scheme.
A metal string light cable kit - to prevent lights from sagging, about £20 off Amazon.
10' x 1" plastic PVC pipe - for pushing into the ground for metal pipe to go into which you cut into 2ft lengths.
Some metal pipe straps from the same place you buy the metal electrical conduit poles.
Drill a hole 3" down from top of pole.
Fix the pipe straps (hooks) using a screwdriver or drill.
Buy conduit caps to seal the tops of the pipe for a more finished look.
Bang 2ft lengths of plastic pipe into the ground (covering the top of the pipe with a piece of wood first so the pipe doesn't split) leaving about 4-6 inches of pipe above ground.
Insert metal conduit poles into plastic pipes.
Hope this helps give you some ideas.

Everything looks so good! I can't wait till the furniture arrives, and you are able to lay down and appreciate your space whilst reading a good book and having a delicious and cooling beverage!
I bought a one sprig pot of Eucalyptus and planted it among my Rose's. It was wonderful to cut anytime I cut a rose for the look and smell.
Also, friends and I would preserve it for holidays and floral arrangements.
It grew huge! Into a tree taller than my house! I had it cut down several times, at quite a cost. And, I could contain it for a while, but it would take off again!
I finally had to have it removed completely, as the roots were impeding under the foundation. I miss it terribly, bc it was one if my favorite features of my garden.
I'd just keep an eye on it. If it begins to grow larger than the space you have it in now, you could move it and let it grow into a tree. They are regal!
Maybe on the left fence offset from the pine ... but, that is when time tells.
I would reccomend a rose bush or two for cuttings with it and the other flowering plants you have. With the care you will certainly give your garden, you will find they are not difficult to maintain.
Pick a day of the week to fertilize every week with Miracle Grow or other bloomers and greens food.
I just heard recently a master gardener say he has "Fertilizer Fridays"
I always planted my plants with a three month slow release granular fertalizer when they go in the ground.
Go ahead and that too. Either plant under the plant first or pour it around existing plants and tossle it into the first few inches of soil to the dripline. But, I never fertilized consistently like that.
My Grandmother would fill a five gallon bucket with water, measure her Miracle Grow, mix it up well, and use an old small sauce pot (maybe a quart) to dip in and give each plant the same amount. She'd give more or less if it was a really big plant or a tiny tot. I loved watching her, and I fertilize that way to this day! Pour the water directly on the ground at the bottom of the plant.
Also, be sure to water in the morning or evening during the week. Adjust how often according to rain. Just use the end of the hose with no nozzle or sprayer ... keep those for washing the car, deck, or house - never the garden! Hold the end of the hose to the ground to water at the base of the plant. You can circle around or do half circles. Just keep it close in to keep the water directed to that plant and off of the leaves. I count to eight for each plant. Or, eight again for a bigger bush. It's the dancer in me!
A thought for the wisteria, build a narrow (1-2ft) trellis in front of that tree at the back left and let it climb it? I'm not really familiar with them even though they grow everywhere here in the South. Then, it would be a little further back, you could build a bed out a foot or two for Maggie's safety, and that back corner would shine!
I am so excited and proud of you and Zara! Your home is turning into a showplace! I'm thinking the next thing you may want to look into is a sail (not sure what y'all call them there) that will stretch over that seating area in the tough heat! They are big here in all shapes, sizes, and colors over patios, yards, pools, etc. And, they can be taken down and put up rather easily. Now, ready to see the finished (well that never happens, but still) project soon! XO

Lovely to see your garden coming along, such a lovely place to be.I know you get lots of tips, just a thought, you have a curvy border round the tree by the shed, maybe have another curvy border/path nearer house to mirror it, will make your garden seem longer, and create a restful, natural look 👍😊

I love love love the yard! So many smart touches: The black fence paint is stunning, the G-word is beautiful and well worth the pain, and that lip to keep it off the grass is genius! You two deserve such a beautiful oasis! 🌹🌹

I wonder if there'd be enough room for a small greenhouse next to the shed once it's been moved. I don't know if you'd get enough sun at the bottom of the garden but might be worth considering. I'd definitely watch you grow food and then turn it into a delicious dinner. 😊

The garden looks amazing you have done a great job we also had an area put down to gravel and used gravel master but we we’re lucky enough to have a great experience with them we were out when they delivered but the driver left the bags neatly to one side of our drive close to the fence and as near as he could to the garage as possible, we were pleasantly surprised 😊

Stunning Luke I k now what it's like to shift a bag of gravel not fun, would you consider painting the neighbours wall when it's fixed in a terracotta colour to give it Tuscan vibes just a thought not sure it's your vibe but I have seen people put plates on it, you already have the lovely blue vase some Italian ones would be nice it really is a fab transformation and what a bonus those chairs off Iwan they look like they would of been expensive ones best wishes to you both

Your garden is coming on lovely. I miss having a garden or some kind of outdoor space. I miss drying clothes outdoors. And I look at all the plants that are currently outside our morrisons wishing I could buy some and plant them. I had to leave behind a fushia.

Every leaf in our garden has been eaten this year, I have never seen as much damage in the 30 odd years we have lived here must be the weird weather we have had this year. Melton Mowbray is the home of Pork pies.

It doesn't matter how young or old you are or how experienced there is always something to learn about gardening. When looking at your border with the Acer trees they could be too big for the area you have planted them in. I'm going by the ones we get in Australia so yours may be different but I think you said they grow to 200cms? tall so they will probably be 90-100 cms wide and you can never trust the tags as sometimes plants grow even bigger than stated. I would probably move them while they are small and pot them until you can find a better spot for them. Something smaller and lower would be a good replacement such as the Lavendar or maybe more Agapanthus. That will stop overcrowding and ensure all of your plants are shown to their best. You are doing really well with the plants you are buying though as you have an excellent variety of leaf colour and shape making it interesting to look at.

Hi Luke, the garden is looking amazing. It's more satisfying and enjoyable when you've done all the work yourself. Good job! You could get some more of the tree edging and paint it black for the edge of the border then it will merge the wood tones together as it meets the sleepers. Enjoy your week, let's hope we get some more sun so you can enjoy your long awaited personal outdoor space. ❤❤

So lovely outdoors now! You’ve worked very hard.
I bought a eucalyptus in a 4 “ pot once, put it in the ground and 18 months later it was 20 feet high…..so beware!
Also ,wisteria needs a solid pergola or frame as it gets so strong and huge.
Don’t train it up the fence as eventually it will pull the fence down!
You two should start watching BBC Gardener’s World each week on tv!
It’s wonderful and you’ll get even more garden knowledge.
It sounds like you have good neighbours!

Good job ,eucalyptus will grow mad you need to put it somewhere in garden where you want a large tree to be,it grows quickly and very rooty and withtime wont allow you to plant anything in and around, lovely ! But note problems you can have in future ,you have popped in a few plants that are not suitable for small border like youre also Laurels grow like mad and will need pruning every year get woody eventually ,do your homework before buying and bi look for suitable plants for an area you want to fill 👍Lizzie

Looks very nice. One hint, for now, don't plant mint unless you are going to keep it in a substantial pot. You can plant the pot but keep it trimmed or it will take over your entire garden, yard and house. It's almost impossible to get rid of it. There are many other border creeping plants. I'd as someone at the store to help you. Good Luck!!!

I got one similar to yours, but, I used the plant stand as the legs. Metal frame plant stand with round bottom and top is round with 3 metal bars between the 2 circles. That's how I raised my firepit.
