This ride first opened in 1986 at Six Flags Magic Mountain, where it was called Shockwave. As part of the Ride Rotation Program, it was removed in 1988 and relocated to Six Flags Great Adventure in 1990 under the same name, and operated there through the 1992 season. In 1993, it was relocated to Six Flags Astroworld as Batman The Escape. When the park closed in 2005, it was shipped to Six Flags Darien Lake, but was never built there and sat in storage until it was scrapped in 2018. A clone was built in 1988, called Stand-Up at Skara Sommarland in Sweden, and relocated to La Ronde in 1995, where it operated as Le Cobra until 2016. It sat SBNO until it was scrapped in 2018.
I loved this ride soooo much. I also remember when the mountain was the Alpine sleigh ride..... Right????? Thanks David for making all these wonderful videos!!!!!
We got stuck at the very top one time. We were sitting there very uncomfortable for an hour in the hot summer sun. Then we had to walk the stairs down one by one because there was just room for two people and one had to be a guide Hey they gave us a free drink and a free pass for another day lol
I rode this coaster in the 80's as Shockwave at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Unfortunately, in January of 2019 Six Flags Darian Lake sold off this classic to the scrap yard. A sad end to a true classic. The world's 1st standup looping coaster. R.I.P (Shockwave, Batman The Escape) 1986-2019
@@johngriswold4303 moneys tight right now with this pandemic and there was never any plans to open up that ride anytime soon so it rotted away for awhile and it probably wasn’t salvageable anymore so I don’t think they should burn in hell
It's a shame this ended up being left to rot. Did no one really not try to sell it? I'm not a fan of stand ups, but it's still a intamin stand up that looks like a B&M, someone probably could've used it in their park. Heck maybe even got it and put sit down or floorless seats on it. Feel like it could've worked. I know part of the reason it rotted was when Six Flags ditched Darien Lake, but why leave it to rot, as said? Also I could very wrong but tbh this looks funner than most of B&M's stand up models when they became their own company.
@@jennifermartinez2367 well nobody "bought it," it was meant to stay in the chain. And as it turned out, there was some damage to replaceable but costly mechanisms. Darien Lake then was not owned by six flags so it wasn't like they could "reposses" it and send it somewhere else. They then chose to just leave it there, which even now with la ronde removing cobra (which was indentical in layout), still to me was a bad choice. If anything because sadly la ronde is treated like garbage where Darien Lake just has better stuff in general and is kept up well too, a "almost a B&M" would've been a fine thing for there line-up and also shortened the "no new coaster" time as well.
I understand. Unfortunately, you could not pay Giovanola to subcontract for Intamin to re-create it, since Giovanola went out of business. Maybe you could pay Walter Bolliger and Claude Mabillard to replicate it (since they designed and engineered this ride when it originally opened in 1986 while they still worked for Giovanola before they left a year later in 1987 after a change of management to form their own company: B and M).
Darien Lake to invest $5 million for 2018. Call me crazy, but the. expense of refurbishment+cost of floreless/sitdown trains=approx. $5 million I'd guess. So this coaster might actually reopen next year. It looks like it has a solid layout. Nice forceful looking loop, awesome looking airtime hill, which knowing that the design is Intamin, even though the track style is B&M, I could see it actually providing airtime as Intamins usually have some airtime on inversion centred coasters.
really wish they had, I think of what six flags darien lake is missing before "what it should get/deserves" and the fact nothing B&M related is there is a shame. At least, with the track style that became B&M, perhaps by now they could've used floorless or sit down seats and had a solid coaster and also a third within the last idk how many years besides just the moto-coaster and tantrum the eurofighter. I see them RMCing Predator but that doesn't up the count exactly.
0:55 I love hearing people have a great time while riding a coaster. :)
Yaaay
It's sarcasm. That part of the ride is extremely boring

Only one Intiman stand-up remains, Shockwave at Drayton Manor in England.
May I use your footage in an upcoming video on Astroworld's history? I will give you full credit.
Funny how four years later you talked about this very coaster
Those were the days😎👍
I hated to see Astroworld go to the graveyard. RIP😭
Because of numerous issues like 9/11, the park becoming outdated, competition with the new stadium and high crime.
Thanks for uploading this!! Always wanted a POV of this
Can’t believe this was filmed in.. what 2005? The quality looks amazing!
That was the final year for it.

It's unfortunate that this is sitting outside at Darien lake. I saw it about a month ago in pieces and it doesn't look so great...
How did you see it?

Wish they build it because Darien Lake is my home park

There are several of them.
Classic! Rode it once, not bad, yet the inverted Batman ride at Six Flags Over Texas is way better.
That thing gave you such a headache.
My favorite ride..and the first to ride when we got to the park.
This ride last resided at Six Flags La Ronde in Canada.... it's gone now. This ride needed a corkscrew though
The La Ronde ride was a clone (originally opened at a park in Switzerland before moving to La Ronde in Canada and later closing).
me too!
Another ride I sadly never got to ride due to my childhood fear of roller coasters (was 10 when it was torn down)
I lived in Houston when the was running...it honestly wasn't that good. It was VERY rough

Who bought this ride? Why buy me it and leave it to rot lol doesn’t make any sense

OneAndOnlySound okay understand
The theming on this was decent in the queue but it wasn't exactly thrilling even for back then
Ok! I’m willing to spend a ton of money to rebuild that!

the one rusting at Darien lake
stand up
I've seen it lol
nice! looks awesome! what kind of coaster is it?
Intamin Stand Up
A used roller coaster.
Is this the one in Canada or the one rusting at Darien lake?
Rusting at Six Flags Darian Lake.
Forgot how jerky this was. It hurt your legs
Thought it was white no?
It was for a decade.
