I liked Handy Dan stores back then. It was sad to see them closed. They had a huge sale at the Pasadena store on the corner of Spencer and Shaver Streets selling everything in the store. I bought a couple of items then noticed a fire extinguisher on the wall. It wasn’t for sale but I took it to the cashier, but when there wasn’t a price tag on it she sold it to me for 50 cents. What a deal. The area around that intersection has completely changed. It’s unrecognizable to what it used to look like. Catty-corner to the Handy Dan was an L-shaped shopping center. It had clothing stores, restaurants, a music shop and at the left end was a Western Auto. I went to that music store to buy my first electric guitar, a cherry red Gibson Melody Maker. I got a Fender amplifier to go with it. I went back to that store to get strings and picks through the years. There was also a Ponchos Restaurant in the mall. At each table was a Mexican flag on a short pole. If you needed help you raised the flag and a waitress would come to help you. I don’t think Ponchos is still in business but their food was great.
@13:41 Thunder River was undoubtedly my favorite attraction at AstroWorld. I loved going on repeat rides at the end of the day when there were no lines. Keep up with the vintage stuff, ABC13! 🙂
@@ABC13Houston my brother did an interview with Bill at the rodeo probably around 1989, how can I get a copy it was for the Houston rodeo and maybe big brothers and sisters program
Thunder River- Greased Lightning- XLR8-Excalibur- Cars-Twister one forgot name, Wagon Wheel- Bamboo Chute All my favorite! Cyclone too Jerky and that drop ain't for me, there was one green, had a tube you went thru viper I think - those were my favorites! My cousin and I spent many days there ) Kroger had our company Picnics there - I was so sad to see it go, and I wish my son could have experienced it. He was only 3 when it closed and he loved the commercials with the guy dancing ! Fright night '- Waterworld- even if they brought it back it would not be same unless they brought these classic rides back. Oh and dungeon drop. I legit thought I died. Did penny trick. The blue sleeved baseball style t-shirt with the Thunder River logo on the front was an employee exclusive t-shirt given to employees in March of 1980.
