    Looks like a group of bugs to squash. Ah well. Greg went out on his own terms and i hope they named the providence after the man. Heck 88 should be Greg's sector.

    Bay of Greg? Greg Bay?…I’m partial to the first one. But I hope his statue says something like, “Greg, Slayer of Xenos, Tamer of the Mountain Fire, Giver of Rocks”

    Great story. But you never send people alone. Even something like a simple foot sprain becomes deadly if you don't have another person to help you in the wilderness.
    The story could practically be the same. You just don't send people alone.

    • @noppornwongrassamee8941
      @noppornwongrassamee8941 Год назад +9

      Indeed. And l leaving people alone for months or years on end in remote outposts is both inefficient and psychologically damaging.
      The story would have worked just fine if everyone lived together in a single settlement and the protagonist had gone to a remote automated outpost alone due to overconfidence and complacency to fix what initially looks like a small technical glitch.

      That much time in isolation would literally drive people insane. There were prison experiments that stopped because the isolation was breaking down people's sanity.
      That said, there are ways to defend your own mind. This was discovered by analyzing the techniques / strategies used by prisoners of war who were not treated well. Mental defenses are possible, but not easy.
      50 years of sustained psychological abuse would produce significant side effects in all of them, and some would break. When a human mind breaks in such a small population, the potential damage they could do . . .
      Of the more powerful nations, Russia has (so far as I am aware) invested the most in the study of human psychology in relation to space travel, including long-term isolation of individuals or small groups. Terraforming a new planet would be a multinational effort. It is reasonable to expect several countries with space faring experience to be involved.
      *** *** ***
      Nit picking a bit,
      While fresh water showers *would* be rationed, salt water showers should be practical, at least near the coast, to remove dirt/dust.
      Water is a big deal for humans, and increasing the available fresh water would be a priority, I would think.

      It might be the case they simply didn't have enough volunteers who qualified for the job, and considering how he said the political situation back home was straining to get people off Earth, they might have sent what they had. Scattering them across the planet to do the job that a group three times their size was supposed to do might be their shot in the dark.
      I would agree with you that I'd definitely want at least a three-man team at each site, but it's not impossible to imagine a situation were you could end up resource strapped, short on personnel, and under immense pressure to make something happen that you could end up in this situation.

    • @feldamar2
      @feldamar2 Год назад

      I mean, sure. Wave enough magic wands or lore and/or have enough idiots in charge and you could do that.
      My point stands. You get more done with 1/3 the groups but 3 person teams. Over a 20 year period you WILL have an incident. And having someone right there who didn't just get a sprained ankle makes one heck of guarantee the project will happen right.
      Even better. The statue would have had 2-3 people staring up at the stars instead! @@benjamintherogue2421

    God damn that was good, I love the irony of the aliens saying that we can’t play god and revive a dead planet and yet they are the one trying to play god and stopping us, because if there were gods that didn’t want us there they most likely would have stopped us before the aliens even could

    Interesting, but kind of strange as well. I can understand the limitations but considering the very likely injuries that would occur I would think it would be a standard practice to have teams of at least two, if not more. And just what were these creatures trying to stop the terraforming? If the world was dead, where did they come from?

    • @Elmithian
      @Elmithian 11 месяцев назад

      Probably subterraneans. They live in the crust rather than the surface.
      Might be a species that was running away from sort of world eaters, like the tyranids, that consumed the galaxy of most biological life, likely explaining the lack of planets with any fauna or flora beyond the most early forms of it.
      Would explain why they didn't want the humans here and why they told him to go home to die (as they probably still assume the swarm that eats life is still present) and that the humans were really painting a target on their hiding spot.
