To those criticising the hosts - they're just reflecting the questions the vast majority of the audience would have - they aren't there to please SW fans, they're trying to make him accessible to ordinary people. And they actually get some pretty good answers out of him (e.g. the comparison with cutting favourite scenes from a movie).
No, no, and absolutely no. The hosts were not prepared and asked insanely stupid questions, such as "there are no words?" That shows they couldn't be bothered to watch two short music videos before having him as a guest. That is a level of non-preparation beyond anything excusable.
I've been a fan of Steven Wilson since Stupid Dream. It's surreal (in a great way) to see him getting exposure outside the rarefied world of prog. So well deserved.
Rarified world of prog? what the heck, I've known average rock fans who listen to Porcupine Tree, they are not that unkown, but unknown for sure for a morning show audience.
The best part about Steven being discovered by the world is that he did it without selling out an ounce of his spirit. This album is as solid (if not more) as any random piece in his career. Thanks for uploading this.
Steven is so articulate here, its a pleasure listening to him. He totally deserves every ounce of attention he is getting. It's long overdue I'd say :0
Great to see Steven getting some exposure on the BBC. Funny to see both sides somewhat struggling with the setup though because neither know really what to expect. Two different culture colliding. Great interview.
RIGHT!?!?!?!?! "There are no words" No shit Sherlock. I love how Steven even says something about it like "Yeah there's words, but for some fucking reason you chose the part that didn't have words" Like ????
@@Deadlikenny The mainstream moguls like the BBC et.al don't want the likes of SW having success people like him could'nt be manipulated and used by the likes of Cowell and his ilk.So it's not surprising they messed up the playing of the clips,it was as if they were delibrately trying to ridicule his music, and remember mainstream music and tv are all bedfellows, they pander to the lowest common denominator.
How on earth could they do that? "Let's see how stupid we can appear!" was the attitude? Amazing. Steven's on top form though. He says so much with just a few words.
It's actually a very deep statement; as in it doesn't literally just mean "you're stupid for dreaming about wanting to swim in stacks of money by selling music", but rather it questions what music really is. In the sense that music is the journey which one creates it; whether others listen to it, like it or not doesn't matter but yet it matters, though the most important thing is the quality and mastery in the music's respective context. And the topic about money and fame where most people look at them as final goals or life goals without understanding that at the end of the day, money and fame are merely tools to pursue your mastery in music itself. And in Steven Wilson's case, getting more popular or viral meant that this gave him a higher volume of audience + money, which ultimately funnels and fuels his journey to make more music that's to come. Lastly, he could be saying that it's a futile and pointless dream to make music because who knows if you can sell it, but he still does it regardless. It's sort of that moment where you go "fine if I die and didn't manage to win, but I'm still going to do it and die trying" sort of attitude. Obviously in this case, he needs to be able to sell it to a certain extent because if not, he wouldn't be able to dedicate most of his life to music. He could probably still do it like sidelining music whilst having a day job, but what's the point really if you truly look at it? So all in all, that statement is a big paradox about music, money and fame's relationship itself and also a confession about how stupid everything is, but you still would want to do it. Maybe I'm overthinking it but that's how I look at it.
The singing is so powerful, evocative and essential to the meaning of the song! If you're going to ask what the song is about why leave out the lyrical part? Very strange!
The 1 man on the planet that really should be a billionaire! Thanks for all the wonderful music you've made Steven Wilson... I have enjoyed it immensely "CHEERS"
Steven Wilson is one of the hardest workers not just in prog rock but in music itself and deserves every bit of the success he's acheived, he's more than earned it and it's really good to see him making TV appearances on the BBC. I went to see him four years ago and it was one of the best shows i have been to, if you haven't been to see SW, i highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
No words in the second song? That proves even the hosts don't know his music. I like it BTW that the fans are real fans who understand and absorb the music. Quality fans for quality music
Beautiful duet work with Ninet... but they cut all of it out for a minor instrumental break. It's like the producers of the show didn't even listen to the song, they just queued it up at a random time without any preparation. I wish I could put such little effort into my job and keep it.
Steve Wilson makes good music, and he is one step ahead of the game. Furthermore, the thing I respect about him is that he does what he wants, and he ain't never sold out.
Steven is amazing, i mean, he's music preception is incredible. Im lucky enough to like he's prog phase and he's now pop phase. Eventhough speaks about an concepctual album, with lyrics. But i hear the rythm, feeling of the music, im in love. With this new album, it happen the same thing with insurgentes, which was an incredible album, along with the raven that refused to sing. Although, the song that touched to my core, was i drive the hearse (by porcupine tree), with lyrics, the albums he's made, have been amazig!!!!!
I met SW in Liverpool after a show in about 1995 with PT.. Absolutely delighted to see this and the progression he's made with his solo career.. Shame on the BBC for this, shambolic journalism..
SW says it takes him a “long time” 2 years between most of his solo albums, and he does more in 2 years than most bands can do in 4-5. Constantly evolving. The 3.5 years between to the bone and the future bites have yielded his best work yet. The album itself is only 9 tracks, but if you dig around here on RUclips you can find the bonus and B side tracks for a whopping 24 tracks! And that’s not even including the demos and instrumentals!
If I'd never heard of Steven Wilson before then it was the second clip that would have made me sit up and take notice as it is a beautiful piece of instrumental music - the first clip is in no way indicative of what he is about - the man is a genius
What a beautiful person, actually I always love to hear him speaking. I'd like him to make videos speaking and sharing himself more than musically, like Devin Townsend does, because the interviewers he speak for are never prepared to make him the right questions
Sometime I think to myself how the hell did some of the people who get there get there, "So, there are no words?". I was like wat wat wat. You're interviewing someone, and the clip is that you've chosen, you haven't even seen it. -_- The many likes to this post are solely because of Steven. Insightful by him.

He looks so good for a 49 year old. The Johnny Depp of prog in some ways. Ive heard somewhere that he eats alot of dark chocolate. Plenty of antioxidants in that.
“So there are no words...” possibly the funniest thing the BBC have ever done (note to presenter: they are called lyrics). And showing ‘permanating’ a wonderful track but hardly the most representative piece they could have chosen. I can imagine a whole bunch of Bollywood fans going out to buy Raven or watching Routine and thinking “what the hell?” The presenters were totally clueless.

Yes and no Paul. They were obviously not well prepared, and did ask some very inane questions.
Whatever. The hosts are idiots, and I'm damn sure that lady is not polite. How stupid she sounds
Where he (the host) seemed quite interested in his guest, she was rather impolite and hostile...i had that feeling at least.
finally someone who gets journalism

And I don't believe it will change him. I think he's much too intelligent to fall for all that crap.
He's a genius and seems like a nice guy too
Well, you Get All You Deserve
Who else thought the whole second clip "so there are no words" part was friggin hilarious!
You can tell that interviewer who said that clocks in and clocks out everyday with zero prep.
I wouldnt be too hard on her. Its just seems like such a typical "normal reacts to prog rock" comment.
Soo much annoying
Cringeworthy
Yeah that was stupid as hell, WOW OMG THERE ARE A FEW INSTRUMENTAL BARS :0000. Idiots, lmao.
Host: So, what is prog rock?
Steven: I have no idea
[internally: wait! these people are nowhere near ready for this!]
Uh actually, it's like this...
dude you killed it! I lol-d :D
Exactly what happened. This is the tradeoff for making "in the charts."
I'm not sure Steven knows what Prog Rock means!

Forget the hosts, the real muppet of this segment is whoever chose to play the instrumental end bit of Pariah instead of the parts with vocals.
there are no words hahaha. Pretty much why you can't use pieces like this to get exposure. No prep time done by these hosts.
