This is quite common. I had a neighbor who was wearing a Vasco Da Gama jersey one day and I asked if he knew what it was, since he wasn't much of a football fan. He said that on a trip to Brazil a man gave that shirt to him and told stories of Roberto Dinamite while they were drinking beers in Copacabana. I told him "yeah, that's right. Dinamite was a key figure to Vasco's renaissance in the 80's. Very nice. Glad you like it" and he told me "I asked the Vasco fan who gave me this shirt if this Dinamite guy was the best player he saw in the pitch and he said no" and I went "oh! Really? What did he say?" And then he told me that the guy said to him "don't let my wife hear this, but although my favorite player is Pelé, I watched very few of his games. The big name for me is Zico. So glad you did this video. It’s unbelievable that nobody talks about him as a top 10 of all time. I’m British, but as a 14 year old I cried for days when Italy beat Brazil in 1982. It was the death of traditional Brazilian stylish football.
@v-gun That match, Brazil vs Italy in the 1982 world championship, I have always remembered and regretted it and while I am sharing this with you I am still regretting it! At that time referees didn´t deal with the unsporting italian tactics of rolling over the grass, faking injuries over the slightest touch.
I never saw this guy playing, but he is one of my idols in football. His persona, everything he represents for us Flamengo fans is just another level. As some people would say: "If Zico never won a World Cup, well... too bad for the World Cup".
Zico is among the all-time top 5 best Brazilian players ever and I don't think youngsters fully understand how incredible this guy was. Maradona was certainly the top player of the 80s, but this guy was certainly the second greatest of that decade... His performance in the Intercontinental Cup against Liverpool was not merely a masterpiece, it was a massacre. Liverpool were completely shred to bits by Zico in just one half of the match, in a breathtaking display of amazing footballing skills... During WC 1982, he was the best in a team of grand masters. Every single goal from that team was a piece of art and he was involved in most of them... A truly great player that didn't manage to get football's ultimate prize, in the same fashion as other past greats such as Di Stefano, Puskas, Cruyff and Eusebio...
He was not the Brazilian Maradona. That's just crazy, because he was before Diego. He was known originally has "the white Pelé". A title he hated.Zico had everything has a footballer. Dribbling, passing, speed, heading, free kicks, playmaking, free style skills, prolific goalscoring. Never lost a match against Maradona. And out the six games they played against each other. He won four of those matches & matched Maradona skill for skill in all those six games. What cost him in terms of a PR goated legacy, was never leading Brazil to a world cup trophy win & not playing in Scudetto extensively like Platini & Maradona. Bossing the league like them. Still, he was the best South American player of the 1970s & second best South American player of the 1980s behind Maradona.
Well said, I rate him above R9 and R10. Zico for me sits in the pantheon of all time best ball players comprising: Di Stéfano, Pelé, Best, Cruijff, Maradona and Messi. I've no doubt if he had won the World Cup he'd be in most people's T5.

He will never be forgotten by anybody. He is a football hero. Nobody can deny it, only a fool. To speak is name is go mention a legend. Who can argue this?
@@fernando-loula For me, he is easily in the same class as Garrincha, Pele, Socrates. In England, we do not think of these guys as normal, but kind of football gods. My father's nickname in his younger days when he was a football player was "Zico". As far as I know - Zico is well respected in Bulgaria especially from the football enthisiasts! Absolute genius!
Zico is easily the greatest player without a World Cup title. If he had won the title in 1982, his name would be mentioned in the same train as Maradona, Pele and Messi. It wasn't Zico's fault that Brazil went to the World Cup without a goalkeeper and without a defense. He was one of the few footballers who was able to outplay the entire opposing defense all by himself, and in series. Only Messi, Maradona, Pele, Ronaldinho, George Best, Cruijff, Roberto Baggio and him could do that. And no one else. Besides, he was a complete player; Two-footed, athletic, fast, strong dribbling, strong passer, strong in the air, acrobatic. In all my lists the man is in the top 10 of all time!

Zico is the greatest idol of 9 out of 10 Brazilian professional football players, due to his skills and also his behavior on and off the field. The ultimate players' player.
I was 10 in 1982, at school in England when we played every day at break time everybody wanted to be Zico. There would be arguments "You were Zico yesterday, it's my turn today" then when you scored "Ziiiiiiiccccccoooooooooooo!" He was the man. When I wasn't Zico I had to be David O'Leary.😢
He's one of the unrecognized legends for sure!! Man, I seriously love your content, the flow of the story, and everything else in between...Keep it coming!!! :)
Zico will always be the best in my eyes. I still to this day if I’m playing football with my son aim for the top corner of the goal and think I’m Zico 😂. A truly amazing player. He would cost £150,000,000 in today’s transfer market.
The only thing that's missing in this (otherwise very good) video is the fact that, after returning to Flamengo, and after two of those knee surgeries, he still managed to lead the club to a fourth national title in 1987, alongside Bebeto, Jorginho, Leonardo, Zinho and Aldair, and thus helping pave the way for the generation that would bring back thw World Cup to Brazil, in 1994.
Thanks for making this video....til this day Zico is still the most important player ever for Flamengo supporters and he is the reason I became a Flamengo fan back in 1979
You've already made videos about two very good Brazilians, but unknown internationally, Zico and Alex. One suggestion, there is a very high level player but probably even less known, Ademir da Guia. He deserves a video too.
It’s good you explained how he was the best player in the Italian league. More effective than both Maradona and Platini, in a worse team. The best midfielder of all time.

Zico had a much bigger career than Maradona. Maradona was amazing for a short period of time, Zico was outstanding for a whole career. Accolates, numbers... you name it. And before you say "Maradona won the WC", remember two words: HAND BALL.
Dale no seas culoroto... por algo el diego es el diego y zico es zico. Estas mal de la cabeza si crees que el mejor zucci estoico cerca del mejor diego. Aparte hizo 2 goles ese día el diego y en el otro esquivo medio equipo
There were so many great players in that era for Brazil. They just didn’t focus enough on defending and also never had great keepers then like they do now. If Alisson was around then they might have won in 82.
December 1981. I was 10. Liverpool was the GOAT in my mind. Then, I witnessed Zico & Flamengo utterly outclass Liverpool. By WC82, I knew he was the GOAT. The two through passes against Argentina are forever etched in my memory. A true visionary..
As a Flamengo fan; I can easily say that this is maybe the most respectable homage someone ever made to Zico. There is a saying that claims that March 3rd is Christmas to we Flamenguistas (flamengo supporters are called like this), because Zico was born that day. Flamengo was born the very first minute Zico worn our T-Shirt for the first time; and Flamengo will die the day Zico dies... Thank you man, you made me proud and happy with this video of yours
If Zico had won a World Cup, no one would remember Maradona, because Zico performed better, because he was more objective than the Argentine... he delivered much more GAs as a midfielder.
If he performed better he would have won the World Cup. Maradona scored 5 goals and 5 asists how is that not effective. And he was top scorer in Italy too as a midfielder in the toughest league.
He is without doubt one of the greats, but you’re delusional if you think he was better than Maradona. What he did in 86 cannot be surpassed. Brazil had the better team in 82 I agree and Zico their best player, but Diego was on another level.
@@prometheustv6558Totally agree with everything you say. What he did in 86 and esp at Napoli cannot be underestimated. Winning two league titles in the same era where Milan were at their best and dominating Europe. Napoli had won nothing before him and only won their third ever title two years ago.
@@1972dsrai did you watch the video? How can you say that Zico and Maradona aren’t in the same level? Either you didn’t watch it or you are just pretending you didn’t. Just so you know, I’d argue that the Brazilian league back then was as strong, if not stronger, than any league in the world, inclusive the italian. Just look up some of the players that played here back then. From the 90s on that the best (and 2nd tier) brazilian went to Europe, due to the huge money difference.
I am a Flamengo fan and I appreciate the meticulous way in which you researched the career of one of the greatest players in the history of football. Thanks
This guy is also extremely respected as an icon and person even by our rivals, as he has always respected all teams. If (and I know it's a big "if") he had won the World Cup, people would admit he was better than Maradona
Well no. It does not matter too much who wins what because it is a teameffort. Maradona won in 1986 with a mediocre team, Brazil would have one with a team with great players. So that woul dalways be a difference. Maradona won with Napoli, again one of the weaker sides in a fierce competition in the 80s from the best teams in the world. Then when we look at their individual skills I think we also see that Maradona was simply better and better than anyone I ever saw. And easily so. Zico was fantastic, a joy to watch but he was not as good as Maradona. Maradona carried a team, was an example on the pitchj, was a leader etc...he was everything you need in a player to win games.
So, listen to this: the only people who doubt him are the ones that did not see him play. He still score freekicks with amazing precision into his seventies. He beat a 40 year old Dejan Petkovich (BTW great on freekicks in his own right) to the surprise of no one. Half of Brazil just wanted to turn their backs on him, that was expeceted. It would be the same with Maradona in Argentina if he played there for a club as large, it is the same today with many players from Flamengo. And, let's face it: every kid in Europe begs for excuses to erase non-europeans from their lists. Just saying how it is, if Maradona, Messi, Pelé or even Adriano just happened to be from England, for example, it would be a whole diferent level of recognition. If Zico had, as his brother did, left Brazil as a teenager and went to play on his father team in Portugal (Sporting, if I am not mistaken) he would have won the Champinos League (whatever it was called then) probably more than once, and would be a whole diferent story. Saying that 78 cup had "serious acusations of match fixing" is a bad joke, the undestatement of the century. Never before and neveer since have I heard of a referee ending a game with the ball in the net, or even in midair on it's way to the net, as ou your eufemism. Anyway, what the world saw on that cup was just a taste of what was routine especially in Argentina and Uruguay on the libertadores. As for the match of 5 red cards, you seem to have forgotten that of the two back to back red cards, the first one to Reinaldo might reasonably be considered overly strict, the second came right after the restart after minutes of Athletico not letting the game go on to complain about the first when Eder trying to move the ball for a foul when the ref was positioning it, zidaned his head to the referees chest (also something I never saw before or since). It was a bad referee, a bad day of game (had a lot to do with trying to end that tradition of violence in the libertadores), and the rest is history. What he did to Liverpool, known to many in Europe as the best team ever really speaks for itself. As for the world cups, 82 was a bad day for the best team ever. It is a part of the game, that is why it is magic, this heppens. In 86 the coach did well to put him, it was from a pass of his that the penalti came, but it was a mistake to choose him for kicking the it. I cannot overstate this, but it was not Zico's fault. He could and maybe should have played 90, and I think he would have made a diference, but who knows what would have happened. André Kfouri, a journalist from Brazil said the 3 most underrated players he ever saw were Ronaldo, Messi and Zico, and I agree. They did the extrordinary on such a daily basis that people began to demand it from him. Fourtunatly the game and especially referees improved a lot, but it was the violence in general that shortened Zico's legacy. But to the ones that did get to enjoy him, the japanese and the Flamengo supporters like myself it will always be Zico, Flamengo, God ans then the rest.
I remember seeing him play for the first time in Copa Libertadores in 1981. He would take the ball from the mid field, and it was like a video game. He would dribble passing defenders like nothing.
in libertadores 1981, there was NOTHING really, for CORRUPT ZICO: THE CARIOCA "REFEREE" J.R.RATO (aka RAT) EXPULSED 6 PLAYERS OF THE OTHER TEAM (Atletico Mineiro) IN THE FINALS ....ZICO AND FLAMENGO (aka VAR-MENGO) THE MOST CORRUPT PLAYER/TEAM IN FOOTBAL HISTORY

I feel offended by the idea of calling Zico "brazilian Maradona". Maradona is a mediocre player who is only known because he comitted an horrible act of cheating and bragged about it and sullied the World Cup with it. Maradona can't even lick the boots of Zico.
Listen I love Zico to bits, but you sound like a sore Brazilian. Maradona in 7 years with Napoli won 2 leasute titles (the only league titles in history till 2024!), 2 second place finishes, an UEFA Cup (a really serious competition in those days as 2nd of each national league played); 1 coppa, 1 supercoppa. Zico with Udinese managed mid table finishes with not much change before and after Zico. Zico didn’t win the world cup with an all time great team. Maradona won a world cup and finished finalist next time with pretty average teams. Yes, as I said, Zico is great. I have great respect for his name and I include him with Maradona and Platini as the best players of the 80s; just above likes of Gullit, Van Basten, Mattheus etc. But to say Maradona is only known for an act of cheating is the most ridiculous statement ever made.
Great video. The only people who doesn’t recognize the greatness are the people who hates Flamengo. If he was playing for a club like Santos he would be loved by everybody with cup or not. This and the fact that Brazil doesn’t love football, Brazil love winners. If people want to understand who Zico is just need to watch other Brazilian players talking about him. He’s the idol of the idols.

My friend, thank you for this precious jewel. This is one of the best summaries of Zico's difficult career, the one who was been elected by FIFA as the best midfielder in all history. You only missed to add that after 1986, Zico, with an inflamed knee and full of pain, led Flamengo to another national title. However, due to political issues, the Brazilian federation (CBF) prevented Flamengo from playing in the Libertadores in 88, which took away Zico's last chance to seek a new World Championship with Flamengo.
Zico was the complete player. Both the bow and the arrow for Flamengo, not to mention his leadership. When he left for Udinese, Carlos Alberto Torres, then the team's coach, reacted quickly upon hearing the news from the club president. He simply said, "Well, now you’ll need to get me two players: a midfielder and a striker." His numbers as a midfielder is just unbelievable.
Zico just the name tells you he’s going to be special and special he was i remember the Brazilian team 82 World Cup and every player was brilliant and not just the starting eleven but Zico was just breathtaking.
Its incredible that not much is spoken about him in the UK. I remember doing a bit of skill in training or a match and just shouting 'I'm Zico' and people would ask who Zico was. We only got to see him in World Cups. No internet and every match available in those days. But what a player and the fella who broke his leg should have been jailed.

I was just a young kid in 82, but that Brazil team was breathtaking and Zico the clear star of the team. At that time only Maradona was better.
Yep. I only watched compilation of him six months ago and was stunned how RIDICULOUS the guy was -as good as any GOAT I've admired!!!
well... Zico never losted a single game against Maradona!
Ahead of Platini then?
I'm not trying to be pedantic either. I just am never sure how I rate those two compared to each other. 😅

He should never have gone to Udinese though
He was a truly amazing player and everyone in Europe remembers him for the Brazil team from 82 and he was the star of that amazing team.

Well said, I rate him above R9 and R10. Zico for me sits in the pantheon of all time best ball players comprising: Di Stéfano, Pelé, Best, Cruijff, Maradona and Messi. I've no doubt if he had won the World Cup he'd be in most people's T5.

I think he plays very similar to Messi. They both have close to 1,7 m and Run with the ball in a very similar way

Zico is the greatest idol of 9 out of 10 Brazilian professional football players, due to his skills and also his behavior on and off the field. The ultimate players' player.
Zico was the first name I wanted to change mine into as a child. ❤
I was 10 in 1982, at school in England when we played every day at break time everybody wanted to be Zico. There would be arguments "You were Zico yesterday, it's my turn today" then when you scored "Ziiiiiiiccccccoooooooooooo!"
He was the man.
Garrincha, Zico and Pele. and Johan Cruyff - my favorite players back in the years. the best of the best!
Perfect video. Absolutely perfect! Thank you for all the hard work.

He was not forgotten at all, those of us who are 50 years old and above, remember him very well. In fact, we called him "the White Pele"...

In Brazil there's not even a debate, he is a legend, respected by every club and every football fan in the nation
Aparte hizo 2 goles ese día el diego y en el otro esquivo medio equipo
zico and socrates are stars who mustn't be forgotten
There were so many great players in that era for Brazil. They just didn’t focus enough on defending and also never had great keepers then like they do now. If Alisson was around then they might have won in 82.
Great vid as always, I've been watching for years...love your work dude😊❤
December 1981. I was 10. Liverpool was the GOAT in my mind. Then, I witnessed Zico & Flamengo utterly outclass Liverpool. By WC82, I knew he was the GOAT. The two through passes against Argentina are forever etched in my memory. A true visionary..
Finally he does Zico one of my favorite players and is also underrated
That 82 wc team was one of the best ever and he was the star among many stars.

"Here We Go"
"So.... Listen to this"
Two most iconic words in football history!
Zico is the best Brazilian player after Pele.
Ziko and garrincha are two of the best players to watch whilst also being unplayable.
Been waiting for this one. Brilliant!
I didn't forget him still kept him in my pes squad
I remember seeing him play for the first time in Copa Libertadores in 1981. He would take the ball from the mid field, and it was like a video game. He would dribble passing defenders like nothing.
in libertadores 1981, there was NOTHING really, for CORRUPT ZICO:

I feel offended by the idea of calling Zico "brazilian Maradona". Maradona is a mediocre player who is only known because he comitted an horrible act of cheating and bragged about it and sullied the World Cup with it. Maradona can't even lick the boots of Zico.
‘’Maradona a mediocre player?’’😂 Get out of here.
