Funny story Back in the 90s, Irelands manager(I think it was Bobby Robson)found a loophole. He called up every good player who had even a remote connection to Ireland. During a wc qualifier, the Irish anthem was playing and one player who they called up said "this anthem is shit, isn't it?" To Keane. He replied, "Shut the feck up, it's ours"
Keane wasn't a defensive midfielder. Him and Scholes were both box-box, Scholes was just a little more attacking minded and known to score from outside the box or with late runs. Yes, Keane wasn't shy with a tackle, but his game was balanced between defence and attack... whatever was needed in the moment. An 8, box-box. Keane could also play. He wasn't just a rough tackling guy. If the opposition just wanted a game of football, Keane would play nice. If they wanted a bit of rough and tumble competitive spirit... Keane was always up for that side of the game.
I think thats true originally, that he was a box to box midfielder, but I think after his cruciate ligament injury he started playing more defensively bc he couldnt run as much
@ReplacedScroll Keane was still a good runner and one of the faster players in the team. Perhaps because he had a wiser head on his shoulders, as most players do later in their career... he played more in his head and reduced unnecessary running all over the place. The 99/2000 season was Keane's most prolific scoring season for Utd. That was after his knee injury. He was only 1 game of bad luck away from elevating his status in the legends book. Utd vs Real Madrid, champions league quarter-finals. First leg 0-0 in Madrid. Return leg at Old Trafford, first goal was an own goal from Keane, and later in the match, he had a somewhat open goal to aim for, but his shot went over the bar. He didn't play badly, these are just 2 fractions of a second that went badly against him, and Utd lost 3-2. Besides. Keane wasn't an all-out nutter on the pitch. If the opposition refrained from turning it into a fight, Keane would just play the match. If the opponents were aggressive, Keane would step that side of his game, and his character up to meet them head on and let them know they weren't going to scare him into losing the match
