    When I see footballers from the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s that can dribble and make moves like this man I have so much respect for them. You gotta remember, these guys invented moves like that. They didn’t have the internet or could see clips of other footballers doing it to replicate. It’s almost like they invented something. Some of his moves were just incredible

      @mikemurphy8996 Actually we are indebted to this channel for bringing these comparatively obscure players. This guy is even more talented than Hugo Sanchez! Definitely looks one of the best CONCACAF players. There is also one more point apart from inventing new moves: Protection of attacking players was abysmal so a double achievement.

    • @BeaverThe01.
      @BeaverThe01. 3 месяца назад +2

      You don't invent dribbles to develop your game, rather your dribbling develops as you play, this is why players use it less as they age no matter the culture of the game, not because they can't do it anymore but because they realize it's a waste of energy unless you're trying to hold up play. The game was much more static back then, only certain players made runs and dribbling was considered low brow in much of Europe for a long time which is why a lot of these guys became such legends in the first place, they dared to be different, these days young players try to emulate them and thusly become the antithesis to them. Kinda ironic....

    • @kevinbadalkar9740
      @kevinbadalkar9740 3 месяца назад +2

      @@BeaverThe01. While I see the point you are trying to make but it is not true that dribbling is a "waste of energy" or that you develop dribbling "later." In fact, its a super-saver of energy in certain situations as well as one of the few things that can create chances and unpredictability in today's tight games. Otherwise, you might as well just hire the best and fastest sprinters for football. Dribbling is encouraged in Latin America and Southern Europe at youth level. It is too risky to deploy something that you are uncomfortable with later. Even Pep Guardiola in a recent press comment said that we need the dribblers and individualists more than ever as tactics have compressed time and space so much that even a medium level team can hold off a superior team with tactics. By the way, just because something is low-brow in one part of the world does not make it less legit. It was just that certain footballing cultures discouraged it. Average European players in fact use dribbling now much more than in the 80s/90s when only top stars used to employ it. Now they've integrated it from youth level so players are comfortable using it at top level.

    • @BeaverThe01.
      @BeaverThe01. 3 месяца назад +1

      @@kevinbadalkar9740 I think I left you with the feeling that I agree with what I said, I just said how it is seen and how it was perceived back in the day, I do agree with you on all accounts...I just don't think dribbling skills are as essential to the game as is believed, in the end it comes down to mentality and if you have that then I"m interested in seeing you dribble because it has purpose, but dribbling for the sake of it is just a waste of time in my opinion... Like, I loved watching Zidane dribble for example because I have never seen him lose the ball over a failed dribble. That's exactly what made it so special, he only ever used his power to benefit the team which is the point of football, it's about teamwork, not the individual... Most players these days dribble for highlight reels cuz they want to be superstars, in of itself nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't win trophies...

    Salvadoran here. I actually met the guy and he was extremely chill.
    The neighborhood had this basketball court that doubled as a football court. Not too big, but I'd always ask my dad if I could go play there for a bit even if it was by myself. I must've been 12 or 13 playing soccer by myself when Magico came in with what I presume was his grandson. I knew who he was and went like "uuuuh, Magico??!". We played some pickup for a bit, and he also bought a bunch of trading card packs for the 2010 WC sticker album. He proceeds to give me all his duplicates (about 300 stickers) and then we all leave after a bit. Turns out he lived in that neighborhood and would frequently play with people in that court. Looking back, I wish I had asked him for an autograph before I moved to the US.
    He may be a lazy troll, but he's a super down to earth guy, very kind.

      Magico was a natural talent. He almost scored the best goal in the 1982 world cup tournament when he left 4 belgian players in the dust. If it weren't for the 5th belgian player who poked the ball from behind. Belgium at that time were european runners up in 1980. I would say Magico is the most talented soccer player to come out from Concacaf. He hardly trained which boggles my mind to this day. No wonder Maradona was jealous of Magicos natural talent that he had while Maradona had to train a lot in order to be the greatest condition.

      If I were the owner of a soccer team, I would hire El Pescadito Ruiz rather than Mágico González. The reason is productivity. Carlos Ruiz scored 68 goals for Guatemala, Jorge González only 28. Although Guatemala never qualified for the World Cup, they are the nation to have produced the greatest goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history in Carlos Ruiz. El Mágico disappeared for El Salvador in the games to qualify for 1986 and 1990. It was Baltazar Zapata who scored more for el Salvador. Speaking about magic in soccer, one time I saw El Pescadito score a fantasy goal against Costa Rica with a bicycle kick.

      elastico was "invented" by a youth team mate of Rivelino's who he learned it from and popularised it. Tons of footage of him doing this. I imagine learning it is some sort of Brazilian right of passage for their elite dribblers. Hard work? He was also famous for drinking, drugs, lazy for training. I've always doubted "stars" with a dark backgound.

      @@rudyvanhern I didn't say Magico worked hard. He was good based on talent alone. He would have been great if he had worked & applied himself.

    This story reminded me of Dobrin, the mysterious player who was not let to become the GOAT by the communists, he could've played in Hererra's Inter and Santiago Bernabeu's Real Madrid, the dictator refused to let him go for what would've been an insane record transfer fee for those times. He was a genius on the pitch, but a tragic character, with other people making all the important decisions in his career, none of them benefiting him. The streets will never forget, though! Love your content

    I’m surprised at how many comments saying they’d never heard of him, I guess it’s mostly youngsters here but el Mágico was a legend and anyone who watched the game in the 80s knows who he was.

    My dad was from El Salvador and when I was growing up and watching soccer I told him how players like Messi, Zadane, Beckham, Ronaldo, Pelé, and Maradona were the GOATS and he looked at me scoffed and went “go watch El Mágico he’d run circles around those guys” i didn’t believe him until I went and watched his highlights, after watching them for the first time I remember getting chills

    Nice content. I think you could do a a similar video about Matt Le Tissier.
    He was one of the best players in premier league, but he isn't considered a worldwide legend because he stayed loyal to a small club (Southampton) even though big clubs were after him.
    On the international stage, England coaches didn't fancy him and he didn't get picked for big tournaments. They put him in the B-team and he scored a hat trick, but he still wasn't chosen for the first team.
    I recommend you to check out his goal highlights. Some of the best goals ever scored in the premier league.
    He also is the best penalty taker in history with only one miss in his career (98% accuracy)

    I had the chance to talk to him once in my neighborhood on a Christmas' eve about 10 years ago.. He's the the most humble guy you can ever talk to... I told him an anecdote That a coach of my neighborhood told me about him when he was a little kid.. He came from across the city in San Salvador to a sandy little football field just to play in a football school(that's how we call football or soccer academies) and he didn't like to practice just to play.. He'd come to "don Antonio" the football coach and tell him he had a stomachache and wasn't able to practice And the coach told him to sit and observe the practice.. After the practice was done and the coach was ready to make the line up to play, magico stood up and told him the stomachache was gone and he was ready to play... He never liked to practice just play.. as any other kid.. He always saw football as fun not as work.. He confirmed that anecdote "do Antonio" told me about him and he said... "Don antonio was right I never liked to practice just play that's the way I was" grande el mágico... The difference between him and the rest of football monsters is that he never played for money, just for fun as that kid he's always been..

    IMO this dude is a legend. Prob the best concacaf player ever. On the field. Off the field, unsure lol. But as a Mexican I acknowledge that Mexico rules the soccer media and will be louder and both media and fans prob will never acknowledge this guy as a great or greatest.
