just returned mine. The screen is absolutely beautiful and i loved watching content on it while traveling, but that's been literally it's only use case other than acting as a mobile second monitor for my Macbook (albeit limited to 60hz over screen sharing which kinda removes a lot of the appeal). I purposely tried to do everything I normally do on it, and there were multiple instances where i just had to pull out my Macbook. Again, incredible display and if they eventually stop gimping iPadOS I may get another one, but as of now an $1,800 travel content consumption machine just isn't worth it. If they put the same OLED panel in the upcoming Macbook Pro, that will be the ultimate device
@@tomsop As a photographer i still use Lightroom Classic on the mac because it's just better at file management IMO, but i certainly could get away with using Lightroom on the iPad. Photoshop on the other hand, is just a non-starter and was one of the main reasons i'd always have to pull out the Macbook. Final Cut, Photoshop, terminal and things like homebrew, file management, multiple audio streams, etc. They fix all that, and then maybe i'll give it another shot

I’ve just been running into more and more web apps in Safari that are plagued with bugs. Particularly these apps are focused around business, that is making the iPad experience more and more frustrating which results me living in Remote Desktop session more and more for a chromium based browser. Otherwise love it.
Yes, I switch between Chrome and Safari for web apps, picking the best ones. Safari hasn't been quite right for a while, including a significant memory leak on macOS.

Me too... At $3k plus, and not even fully loaded. It costs just as much as my gaming laptop with a 4080gpu... I swear, if after wwdc the ipados is still this lame, I wouldn't even consider upgrading I'm rocking a 4th gen ipad pro with M1 chip, it still works really well and honestly, if the os is still gonna be the same. I really don't see the point in upgrading. As for AI, I hardly use it enough to justify the jump.
Not much to make a difference. The OS updates don’t come out until late in the fall/ early winter. New Siri should drop in 2025 I read. If you want it just buy it. Most of the app updates won’t come out for 6-12 months to maximize M4.
I’m passing on it, while I like the subtle updates it just doesn’t take advantage of the M4 chip in any productive or meaningful way for me right now. I don’t care to have my iPad be a Mac, but OS needs to keep maturing, doesn’t need to become a Mac to do so.
The M4 iPad Pro seems to be much more of an upgrade than I initially thought based on other reviews. I really enjoy seeing your workflows and all the things that you do on the iPad Pro. I’m still cruising along with an 13-inch M1 iPad Pro and it’s doing quite well for me, though I’m not doing my video editing on my iPad (still running FCPX on a Mac Mini M2 Pro). This was a great assessment and has inspired me to start using my iPad Pro more, and I’m strongly considering the upgrade to the M4 once I get my head wrapped around FCP on the iPad. Thank you!
Great Video Chris! I have been waffling back and forth between the 11 and 13”. I checked out the 13 and felt it would be light enough to use it in tablet mode more than the 12.9 (which I returned) I liked the 11 but missed the real estate when docked in the keyboard. Thanks! I am going to try the 13 and see if I can use in tablet mode more. Not like holding for hours but at least 45 min. Thanks I appreciate your views and your videos!
Hey Chris. As I find myself using AI more and more, I recently upgraded from an 11inch M1 iPP to the new M4 11 inch iPP (my main computer). The M4's far superior neural engine enables me to complete my AI related tasks in more than half the time! 😎. Thanks for the video! 🙏
I am curious what do you use AI for - I see it being used as an encyclopedia resource or for transcribing and summarizing notes - I wanted to use AI to help screen for stocks but it does not let me - there must be some work around but beyond my ability to develop. For instance asking AI to give me a list of companies that reported 30% increase in sales and revenue based on certain capitalizations and industries - you got to pay $1000 a year for access to such data - AI could help knock down that barrier.
What AI tasks are you doing that actually get use out of the M4’s chip? The majority of AI tools I use are not ran locally (i.e., cloud LLM processing)
Honestly, for photography and light video work, I don’t think there’s anything better than an iPad Pro. It’s just great to edit photos on location, show the client, and then even airdrop them samples pretty much immediately. Very convenient. Unfortunately I cannot run the printing module from my iPad (or I haven’t even tried) but I use my Windows machine at my desktop for that. Same thing for archiving projects and photos. But I just prefer using my iPad and iOS. It’s just more comfortable and more focusing than a regular desktop computer.
I just saw the WWDC announcements for the iOS updates. The Apple Intelligence looks great. None of the iOS changes does anything to make the pro experience on the iPad Pro any better. I was hoping for some of the changes like file manager improvements. Heck, I would have loved being able to mirror the Mac desktop onto my iPad. But the didn't happen either. Apple still does not see the iPad as an extension of the Mac OS and I suspect they never will. This confirms my decision to get the iPad Air for this cycle and see what happens in the future.
You should make a whole video about how you buy, modify and attached the controller and how to modify game streaming services and stuff like that (Emulators, etc.)
Im using my ipad pro 11 inch M1 version and still running smooth....i think I'll keep this for another 3 years....price of a new unit is getting insane.
My biggest want from WWDC is for the black bars to be gotten rid of when plugging into an external monitor. When just using most apps, or browsing the internet. When I airplay my iPad to my TV, any movie players on a website show up even smaller and condensed on the TV. The aspect ratio is terrible :(
I really like the display of this ipad pro m4 13" screen. It's beautiful and easy on the eyes. Use it with night mode. It's great for watching movies and watching RUclips or applicatoin full screen.
If you are using the 13” IPad Pro to watch films / movies if you lift your iPad up to the normal reading distance and have it front of your tv at the same distance you normally watch it from it you probably can’t see your tv screen.
Hi, Christopher! Thank you for the video! Your insights regarding the iPad are always interesting. I enjoy using the iPad, especially for writing and reading. I think it's a great alternative. But one thing that I find very poorly implemented on the iPad is the fact that it doesn't have a PDF viewer app, like on the Mac. When we open a file to read, it's very impractical: we can only open one file at a time and the file always starts from the first page, for example, and if I want a better experience reading a PDF file I have to import it into another app, like GoodNotes (for example). I think this is such a basic thing and I think it's a purely economic strategy, which makes the synchronization experience for those who use Mac and iPad poor. For things like this, it's shameful for Apple when it comes to iPad users.

If you are okay with a product being in the middle of an iPhone and a Mac, like Steve Jobs said, go for it and the sacrifices that brings, if you are that human an Ipad makes all the sense of the world, but if you want to be in the middle and fight to be on the MacBook side... you will forever fight. I’m surprised Apple didn’t add ports to the aluminum keyboard casing which would truly convert the iPad Pro into a laptop.. It’s like Apple just won’t make that final leap. Also why hasn’t Apple just combined the iPad and laptop as one device. iPad could easily be a removable screen from the laptop and when it gets removed it loads the iPad OS and when reattached to the keyboard and hub you can switch to the full os or not. This seems easy.

If Apple doesn’t make this a setting then I’m going to bug the hell out of Apple haha 😂For the rest it’s all working like a charm. Love the new Magic Keyboard. I always had the Folio Keyboard. This is so much better 👍
I believe you can change this in the sound settings from dynamic volume buttons to fixed / static buttons. I’m not near my iPad right now to say for sure though. I’m honestly trying to get myself used to it since it would be the same layout as the Nintendo Switch’s volume buttons.
Biggest issue for iPads is they lack the software functionality of a $300 dollar computer running Windows or a $800 MacBook Air. If Apple allowed them to be better general purpose computing devices I’d upgrade my M1 IPP today. Honestly, there’s very little tangible differences in functionality from an IPad 5 years ago to the M4IPP today. Wonderful hardware though.
I wouldn’t worry about your AirPods Pro having only two speakers for Dolby Atmos - you only have two ears and having speakers in front, behind, above and below won’t change the number of ears you have. Just saying …

Until iPadOS takes advantage of the available hardware it has the iPad is pretty much useless to me except to play some small games or check email. I do a lot of IT work and I need the full advantage of the hardware so I either work on my Mac or using the company provided Azure Virtual Device.
I went with the 13 Pro 2TB. I’m hoping it handles my daily workload and won’t lag or overheat. I use it only for E-mail, RUclips and some light porn on the weekends.
For anyone thinking of using an ipad pro for photo editing (lightroom) Do not buy the 8gb ram models. (256, 512 storage models) You NEED at least 16 gb of ram to do anything productive. You're paying for a 1,500 ~ 2,000 dollar editing setup My editing experience on lightroom was absolutely disgusting. I'm working with fuji raw files and my entire screen would just freeze 5 mins into working. Masking, using the brush, doing any sort of deleting/cloning will kill this device. The device uses 80% of the ram in it idle state and will max out if you open any productivity app. I would recommend checking out the macbook pro m4 pro model with 24 gb ram and a 512 ssd Its cheaper than this setup (1tb 11inch)

Until iPadOS takes advantage of the available hardware it has the iPad is pretty much useless to me except to play some small games or check email. I do a lot of IT work and I need the full advantage of the hardware so I either work on my Mac or using the company provided Azure Virtual Device.

I went with the 13 Pro 2TB. I’m hoping it handles my daily workload and won’t lag or overheat. I use it only for E-mail, RUclips and some light porn on the weekends.

Do not buy the 8gb ram models. (256, 512 storage models)
You NEED at least 16 gb of ram to do anything productive.
You're paying for a 1,500 ~ 2,000 dollar editing setup
My editing experience on lightroom was absolutely disgusting.
I'm working with fuji raw files and my entire screen would just freeze 5 mins into working.
Masking, using the brush, doing any sort of deleting/cloning will kill this device.
The device uses 80% of the ram in it idle state and will max out if you open any productivity app.
I would recommend checking out the macbook pro m4 pro model with 24 gb ram and a 512 ssd
Its cheaper than this setup (1tb 11inch)
