Picked up a La Grange a few weeks ago. It is stupendous. Gorgeous, dynamic, shimmering Plexi tones. At stage volume, an audience would never know the difference between the La Grange and a Marshall. It turns literally any amp into a screaming Plexi. Two thumbs WAY up.
The Bogner has fucking great midrange gnarl and it sounds like a bitchin Marshall. I hear shades of Hendrix, EVH. Everything about it is authentic. The muting, the string noise & I swear it sounds like it’s coming out of a 4x12 cab. It’s all there. I’m sold
The Dirty Shirley sounds like a very good distortion box (emphasis on "box"). The LaGrange sounds like a very good amplifier with more string to string note definition and a much more open and juicy sound. I prefer the LaGrange.
Great sounding demo! I own both and they are both awesome but shine in different areas. Keep in mind the DS mid control is a mid boost. Meaning at zero the mids are flat. At 12 oclock the mids are boosted.
The Lagrange is the best plexi/Marshall amp in a pedal I've ever heard and is a mainstay on my board. I've been playing 20+ years and threw a clean amp it sounds like a 4 cab Marshall! Buy one, I promise you will be amazed of the dynamics and tones you get outta this magical pedal!
I've owned both at the same time. Side by side in the room, the Bogner makes the Friedman sound like a toy, and I wanted to like the Friedman better because of the size difference.
I think both sound great. I've owned the La Grange and it is an outstanding pedal. For me, however, I wish it had a bit more in the way of EQ options because it had a midrange I could never get quite right. It ended up causing a bit of ear fatigue for whatever reason. I think I may have been using it with a more mid-prominent amp, which it's probably not designed for. I currently have the DS and I think it's pretty great. It's important to keep in mind that while the DS is vintage voiced, it's not exactly replicating a plexi. Pete Thorn has a brief section of his demo where he explains the power and pre-amp sections that Dave Friedman used in putting the DS amp together. Anyway, if a vintage voice is what you want, either of these will do the job in spades.
Love my LaGrange pedal, but rarely use the "Variac" on setting...I think I need to explore that more. I feel like it takes out some of the immediacy of the effect, less attack. But the settings you use with it on sound good! Thanks for running through some different settings. I think it's a very flexible pedal.
Im returning La Grange because of huuuuuuuge noise, lack of EQ and sometimes its too muddy, anyway the best pedal I ever heard, I'm disappointed, I want something similiar :(
I fully agree and can't understand why there was such a big hype about the Friedman pedals. For a very short period of time the Friedman was the best selling overdrive pedal in the world. Now all those dudes seem to come round to their senses only to find out that the best was already on the market for quite a few years. Listen, folks - what more can you ask for? ruclips.net/video/9aFPTe6IV9U/видео.html
@@MrJohnnz You need to set the controls right to avoid noise. Listen to Pete Thorn's demo of the La Grange, this will leave you jawdropping. This video here is of poor quality compared to Pete's which are always brilliant. After all, he's a studio pro and a real genius on guitar. If you're still not happy with your sound, try the Bogner Ecstasy Blue and Red pedals - you'll get all you might ever want. ruclips.net/video/9aFPTe6IV9U/видео.html This is how it's supposed to sound! Period.
Been searching for the best MIAB I can find. Was sold on getting the DLS until I found the La Grange. I do wish it had a regular EQ but to my ears it sounds better than the Friedman or DLS fromn Catalinbread. The only other I found that seems close to as good is the Tsakalis Room #40 but its expensive and hard to find. Might just settle on the La Grange and call it a day.
@@blakemansfield2356 I think at this point the only real challenger is the Room #40 by Tsakalis Audio. Liked the Angry Charlie by JHS and also the Purple Plexi by Lovepedal but neither have in depth AIAB features that the La Grange or Room #40 have. The AC and PP just seem like good dirt boxes with a Marshall "voicing".
The "On" switch quit working on mine and since I didn't buy it new Bogner said I would have to pay shipping both ways and $60 for a repair and hope the repair is permanent. Now all I have is a fancy boost pedal. Great sounding pedal when it worked though. It seems they've had problems with these switches from what I've read online.
@@2204JCM Well, after flipping the switches around I am wrong. It's not a switch problem. I moved the boost switch to the "on" position and it still doesn't work. Something else went bad inside. I only use it at home and it doesn't bet banged around. Since it was used when I got it I don't know what kind of history it has. I do know I won't be buying Bogner pedals again and that's a shame because it really does sound good.
It's hard to tell the difference in the sound but the EQ is more controllable on DS, it's always better to have knobs than mini switches with only 3 ways. The video doesn't show it but I don't think the Bogner has enough gain for metal. the DS can go really far with the internal pot of gain until extreme metal.
Was happy to see someone post you were using a Princeton in this demo That's exactly the amp I want to push You can't use a ton of pedals with them or it's just too much and doesn't sound right My old 808 works great for the Fender tone but thinking the Dirty Shirley for lead and rock (R Montrose) tones And the TS should compliment it if set low gain and higher output how SRV uses it So basically SRV one way Montrose the other way
Mark Bouras The Shirley sounds a little more classic to me and the Bogner a touch more modern. The Shirley can get a little boxy sounding. I really like the low gain mode on the Bogner and that’s what I use daily.
@@blakemansfield2356 Thanks for reply, your demo is awesome btw. Do you find not having a mid control or other eq in the bogner makes it not as versatile or lacking?
Not at all. Tons of EQ options on the Bogner. I'd be surprised if someone couldn't make it work with their rig/guitar. I've had plenty of success with it in front of Fenders, Bogners, Marshalls, and Germinos (and even the clean channel of a Diezel!). I wouldn't recommend the normal OD section in front of a Dirty amp- best results into a (mostly) clean amp. Then again, you have independent boost side that would be cool into a dirty amp- I actually need to try that!
@@blakemansfield2356 I just got back from guitar center and played both. The Bogner was amazing to me, sounds like a real amp. You're right tons of options. I think with the extra voltage that happens inside the bogner, really makes a difference, variac and blend option is next level. Amazing. Thanks!
Hey that's awesome! Both are great- but I lean towards the Bogner, too! I agree- it's one of the least "pedal" sounding pedals I've played. I'll choose a real Marshall cranked up every time, but the Bogner is mighty convenient for day to day jamming around the house. Did you buy it?

Wow, the DS sounds like a pedal, the LG sounds like an amp. This is great, thank you!
I like both, but the La Grange sounds like an amp vs. the Friedman sounding like a pedal

Didn't know that!!!
Inside Out!! Nice. 😎 That Bogner pedal sounds awesome! The Friedman is no slouch either. But the scales tip toward the Bogner for me.
Agreed
That is such a bad ass riff. They should have been huge 👍

It's just a Zvex Box of Rock with a SHO boost.
the Bogner all the way,....I already own the red and blue...killer quality pedals
noworries DS is a nice pedal but yeah, the LG gets my vote if I have to pick one. Have had it for quite some time now and it’s tough to beat.
Both sound really good but the Bogner is decidedly a notch better!
Paul Bordelon Agreed
Isn’t it also like $100 more?
I've owned both at the same time. Side by side in the room, the Bogner makes the Friedman sound like a toy, and I wanted to like the Friedman better because of the size difference.
My experience exactly. As a lifelong Marshall player, to me it's more Marshall like than some of the actual amps I've owned. Superb pedal.
I like both. But I am leaning toward the Dirty Shirley

The La Grange definitely sounds more amp-like.
I’d agree

La Grange sounds more organic. The harmonics sound more natural.

Joe Pastriami No problem! I lean towards the Bogner as well
I love my la grange so much. here too it sounds like the better of the 2.
Both sound great ,but I find dirty Shirley more focused ,seems more controllable..
Not even kinda close. Listened the whole thing with my eyes closed and then got back to it. La Grange for me by a mile
5 STARS JUST ONLY FOR THE INSIDE OUT BY XYZ RIFF!!!!
Haha thanks!
I SECOND that, lmao.....one of my fav riffs to play...and it sounds much better on the Friedman. Most of the riffs do.

The Bogner sounds better for less heavy distortion and rhythm. It's very flubby but still has nice tone. The dirty Shirley seems more well rounded.
I don't know how you can use the DS with gain control at 3 o'clock! I put it at 9 and it's already so angry and aggressive.
Turn down the internal trim pot. Doing this will reduce considerably the gain on tap. Just open the back of the pedal to access it.
Holy sh*t balls you getting these tones out of a Princeton!?! Killer demo
Oh that's great to know because I'm looking for a pedal to beef up my 61 Princeton
Should you drive the pedal and turn amp master down? Or other way about??
I have the la grange through a fender 40w bass man
la grange will be my next pedal to replace my already great bogner blue and red
Came here for the La Grange, left with the Dirty Shirley.
Sounds like daddy peppered up his big one in a way only the big n saltys with taste during thunder.
I have LA GRANGE & EXTACY RED .. awesome pedal btw 🔥🎸🤘🤘

No that’s not accurate. The other pedals such as the Burnley and Wessex have the crappy switches. Not the La Grange.
$5 repair really!

I think I'm the only one who likes the Dirty Shirley in this video
Sounds more open to my ears
I like it but then I read all the reviews and most like the la grange hmmmmm what am I missing
the La Grange sounds better
Love the XYZ !! 🤘🤘🤘
5:17 Ha! Little blip from the past....
Some Dan Patlansky at 6:30 nice
Good ear man. It’s been a while- I Forgot about that little progression
Which sound is that at 2:19?
I think it's a Collective Soul song...
Whatcha playing with our guitar a Amp?.......
Bogner good sound win
Wich have better string separation?
Bogner
Which AMO and guitar?
Bjorn, it's an American Pro Telecaster and Princeton Reverb Reissue- listed in the description. Thanks for watching!
La grange is more delicious.
Sean Marks Agreed
La Grange for my money .. Friedman is overly compressed..
Which do you prefer of the two? I like having a mid knob on the Friedman

La Grange wins by a substantial margin
to much low end on the La grange, can that be tweaked out with the switches? Thats problematic live .
La Grange by a mile
Bogner 低澡真舒坦
DS more clarity 😅
Friedman sounds brighter???? don't know fuck sake if this is benefit??
Are you playing a acoustic guitar through a Peavy bandit..set at noon.
To me both sound too fat, as well as too metallic at the same time. I don't know how to describe that? Pretty much unusable tones for my taste.
lol
