Hello! I located this from an interview Mr.Norton was doing for a movie called Birdman (from Fresh Air on NPR), answering the question on why he wasn't returning:
"I think that, you know, my feeling was that I experimented and experienced what I wanted to. I really, really enjoyed it. And yet I looked at the balance of time in life that one spends not only making those sorts of films, but then especially putting them out and obligations that rightly come with that. And there were just a lot of things that - I wanted more diversity - I sort of chose to continue on my path of having a diversity of experiences. Maybe on some unconscious level, I didn't want to have an association with one thing in any way degrade my effectiveness as an actor in characters. I think you can sort of do anything once, but if you do it too many times it can become a suit that's hard to take off in other people eyes. And if I had continued on with it, I wouldn't have made "Moonrise Kingdom" or "Grand Budapest" or "Birdman" because those all overlapped with - and those were more the priority for me. But I totally, you know, I continue to be a fan. And I'm really, really happy I got to do it once. That particular character I think has a really proud tradition actually of really good actors playing him. And I think I'm really happy to be part of it."
Was just scrolling through comments and hope this gives a bit more light to it. Cheers!

I think that's the real reason they got rid of Norton as Banner. They knew what they were going to do with the Hulk character in the MCU and that Norton wouldn't stand for it and so they brought in a yes man like Ruffalo who didn't really care what they wanted to do with the character. Imagine him going along with what they've done to Hulk and Banner since Avengers. You can't. He wouldn't have. He actually cared.

Abomination was also a great villain. He felt like he could really beat Hulk. He was a badass too, and that was made it feel dire. Cause if he did beat Hulk, there would be no backup and no one to come help. Their fight was epic and tense, but of course we rooted for Hulk to win. The feeling of being an underdog, and the back and forth of the fight.. it had great choreography.

  • @GrubKiller436

They made so many good decisions. They made the body looks like flesh, which was really good. I'm glad they went with the final haircut over the military haircut, and they went for a more linebacker body. Every little detail pays off. The movie came out well. And with most media the actual product doesn't look as good as the concept art. But looking at those concept art, I can say here they managed to bring those to life.
I'm happy that they had Edward Norton as the Hulk. I've heard some people say that he's hard to work with (though honestly there's no evidence for that), but every great creative artist has that energy about them; it's only evidence they're inspired and want to lead with great ideas. It's actually a boon, not a bane. Like they said, Edward was invested in it. It shows he cares.

@Shreyash More they had to nerf the hulk in order to give more screen time to other characters. That’s the reason why they also nerfed Thor in endgame because he might be too powerful and he might take the spotlight from Captain America, Ironman or Captain marvels, even though Captain Marvel didn’t had that much screen time.

Mark Ruffalo made Hulk his own and did an amazing job but it can't hold a candle to Edward Norton's Hulk.
    FIGHT ME!!!
