    This guy is setting people up for failure. I have a Master in Cybersecurity and my curriculum was up to date and provided certs. Tech in general is becoming highly competitive and HR is just looking for reasons to trim candidates. Don’t let someone with a degree tell you not to get one lol

      @@mitchellgriffin6380I’m not saying it’s necessary. What I’m saying is that the market is becoming increasingly more competitive and as the industry becomes more saturated the requirements to make a higher salary is starting to increase. I’m a Security Engineer as well and I’ve made well over $150k, and I can say that your degree enables way more negotiation power.

      Get the degree. You will need it down the line when you are climbing the corporate ladder. You will not be a technologist behind a desk forever. These people are trying to "water down" the profession to make it easier for anyone to get in. You NEED EDUCATION, certifications should be an option or icing on top of the cake.

    Skills and experience and certifications > traditional degree due to technologies advancing so quickly. I've been told this at my first job and now I am earning one rather than heading back to college for Masters.

    Like all things, everything has its context. In the US, a degree is not a big deal if you have certifications and hands on. Outside of the US or coming from an impoverished community, a lack of a degree wont even allow you to get referred or an interview.

    Get the degree(s) if you want to go beyond Cyber Security techie position. You cyber courses that you take for your degree is not outdated, especially if it is a Masters program. My Masters program had up to date courses and some were taught by govt. and industry professionals at the time. I agree with what she said, it depends on the school and the program.

  • @upshawsm

    I have numerous degrees and certifications at all levels. You do not need a degree to get into Cybersecurity. Save money, time and energy and focus on skill building. University provides knowledge, not skills. Case in point. Just before finishing my second Master's degree in Cybersecurity, I disenrolled with having only to complete my Capstone course. The entire Cybersecurity program was outdated and useless (Theory only).
    I started my career in Cybersecurity and have not looked back. You learn by actually doing. Employers wants skills. They don't want to hold your hands for two years before you become productive and add value to the organization. I recommend getting into Cybersecurity first and having your employer pay for your four-year degree to round out your professional skills and prepare for management. The young lady made a great point. Get some experience first, then go back to a traditional school. All the technology concepts and terms will make better sense and you will get more out of your college experience.

    You're better off getting a computer science degree. Even though this is slowly changing, cybersecurity usually isn't going to be your first job out of college. A computer science degree can make you more qualified for a better entry level job(jr sys/net admin, software engineer, application support) then be able to transfer into a security engineer role after a couple years. If you do get an entry level cyber role with a cyber degree, it's going to be something very basic like going through phishing emails and running vuln scans, or you're going to just end up on the help desk making $20 bucks an hour with 100k worth of student debt. I'm going for a cyber masters but I've been in cyber for 3 years now and want to move up.

  • @SmooveQ50
    @SmooveQ50 6 месяцев назад

    In my opinion you do not need a degree to get right into cybersecurity it's more about the skills you have developed and are you able to apply it to the real world if you were to obtain a job most people get a degree but don't know how to apply what they have learned which is the biggest issue the employer does not care that you have a degree it just tells them that you went to school they care more about actual skill than just a piece of paper. You can have as many certifications and degrees in the world you still won't get hired unless you can prove that your the right person for the job and that you know what you are doing. 🤷‍♂

    Its simple. Can you get a job without a degree? Yes..many have done it. And those ppl most likely got in b/c they already worked for the company or knew important ppl. Bet they didnt get it applying online! Go on Indeed, type in your target role and look at the requirements. 90% ask for some kind of tech degree. If you want to get thru the online HR filter, get one.

    I disagree with dude, while living what he’s saying. I do believe no one should expect a college to teach them whatever, the thing is that the resources he listed are available to college students as well. College is great for some people at a certain point in life, it also enables a person to explore while they study, build a network, mess up a little and hide it if need be, a lot else. Other than that, to me it shows that even if the content is irrelevant, this person can brave bull shit which a huge part of corporate work and they have the ability to think on things that are outside their direct line of view. I always say go for the degree, just if you can without the debt

  • @Phyclone

    Context is everything and cats like the man in the video sounds like he's doing a setup to sell you something. At some point some need to have due diligence in what their getting into instead of believing everything they hear. I'm personally getting a degree currently because I chose to look past the right now. Yea you can gain the XP but make no mistake when you're competing, you need every tool and asset in your arsenal.
