P.S. If your pride is too big to accept a psychological, imaginative ways of memorizing Japanese, then so be it, just don't let your phallogocentrism insult people who actually LEARNT Japanese using the method that your "maturity" didn't allow you to.

The traditional way is to learn hiragana, then katakana, then kanji, simply because that's the most straightforward way to do it. There are only 46 hiragana. Each represents a single sound, and has a corresponding katakana. Learning hiragana is an essential first step to learning Japanese. ❤

Wow this works so well. Went onto the website and bought the full version for browser. (less that £2 via paypal, worth it). I'd say about 3 out of 4 of your (Dr. Moku's) mnemonics stuck in my head and I actually remembered the different symbols because of them. The ones that didn't I created my own related mnemonics based on a mnemonic that I did remember; similar to how ぬ and め use interconnected mnemonics. It took about 2 hours and I was getting perfect scores on the test in the browser version. Will keep doing this repeatedly for a few days to make sure the memories stick in my long term memory, but I think it's a very good product. Very clever. Would recommend to any true beginner who's struggling to learn Hiragana as I found that first step a difficult one too. I've got the Genki books with me now, and Dr. Moku is making it far easier to move into learning the words, grammar, and phrases without relying on the Romaji which is what I've been doing up until now... or at least it feels that way anyway. YMMV, and admittedly this is only after one day, so whether what I've learned will stick or not I suppose falls on me, but either way; I recommend this to beginners, definitely.

Of course using mnemonics to learn Japanese is a lot more difficult, but anybody reading this. Get a head start with this stuff. Its really good. just one thing I would add is that once you know hiragana and katakana Don't forget to practice vocalising the letters every day once a day! It will make pronouncing easy!

i cant seem to keep the hiragana in my mind. i use an app called Memrise which is pretty helpful and most of the characters ive learned, ive forgotten their sounds, and thats making me forget their words/phrases. at the moment, all i currently remember is の (no) を (wo) あ (a, which is easiest) ん (n) and i believe thats it T_T

Try to learn a complete Row in One day, a second one tomorrow, etc.
i learned . A I U E O, then KA KI KU KE KO, then GA GI GU GE GO, etc.
Its no too much dificult. Also, try to write the characters so you remember more easy.
My main languaje is Spanish, so i think is more easy for me the pronounciation of the words.

Alan Peralta ^I started out this way. It helps. Additionally, learning to say a word or the name of something you like and then practicing writing it helps.

I know you're either far past the hiragana (and katakana) or have given up Japanese by now, so this message is for those learning the kanas right now: Power through it! I thought I wouldn't have been able to make it through, but guess what? I did! Think about what motivates and about why you're learning Japanese in the first place. You've come this far, don't give up now!

In two years you should easily know enough to hold a conversation. If it helps, I spoke to a guy that spent eight months learning, he learnt enough to travel to Japan and get a job on his work visa there. He didn't have any problems, but even though he wasn't fluent, he was after a couple of months merely because he was surrounded by only Japanese speaking people. Even if you don't have a full understanding, you'll pick it up quickly once you move there. You still need to study first though :)

HA! What Kriss and the rest might find interesting: Read a study a few years ago with this finding: Those that studied a foreign language one year before going to their target country excelled in that language. Those going knowing very little, rarely got above an intermediate level. Exceptions, of course. But studying before you go will enable you to learn faster and expand your base much more quickly than those that don't. (Regardless of taking a class IN Japan starting from zero).

Man this works! In just a couple hours I learned the Hiragana characters. I have tried to learn Hiragana using "Study Japanese for Ipad" but it was just not working. Not that SJI is a useless app, on the contrary, it is more effective now that I have used Dr. Moku's mnemonic method. I don't understand why all learning apps do not incorporate mnemonics. It is a proven and highly effective method for learning. I still remember the ABC song I have learned 40yrs ago.

This is good! the only problem is you will start associating the different Hirigana with what you learn from this, instead of associating it with what they really are. I recommend a website called real kana, you can learn both Hirigana and Katakana in as little as a few weeks. But, this is still good either way.
