I attended Japanese language school in Hawai’i for many years in the 1960s as an after school program. I remember mindlessly filling practice books with hiragana characters. Now that I’m older, I appreciate the care and beauty in your calligraphy. I’m going to return to writing practice, only this time with care and mindfulness. Thank you for the inspiration.

I’m so glad I found your channel! I hope to improve my Japanese reading and writing, and I’m sure your videos will help. In case you read this comment, I have some questions that you might be able to answer in a future video. When you write き “ki” and さ “sa”, you leave a space in curve of the bottom. If I wrote them as they are above, as found on the kanji keyboard, would that be marked “wrong” if someone were testing me? The character ふ “hu/fu” is a similar situation, your handwritten character looks much different than the one offered on the keyboard. I want to write properly in order to one day (maybe) have a Japanese pen friend, so I don’t want to learn any bad habits now! ありがとうございます、先生
For all three characters (き、さ、ふ), you can either connect or leave a space; there’s no right or wrong. For き and さ, most Japanese people including myself leave a space as written in this video. For ふ, some people leave a space, and some people connect (I personally connect my ふs) Hope this helps! :)
Im learning japanese, and in the app im using one of the first things they said to me was that in the keyboard japanese letters are not connected when it should be. Everytime i started learning some new hiragana they pointed out that they may be connected at certain point, but the traditional japanese righting doesnt connected them. I was a bit confuse at first but I ended up learning it in the "traditional way". Im not japanese or something, im just sharing you my experience with this
This is similar to Swahili language because we use the same sounds but write them differently. Sa, se, so, si, shi, ra, re, ri, ro, wa, we and many more are Swahili sounds. Swahili language and Japanese language are highly similar. This has motivated me to learn Japanese!!!! Thanks for this video.
i subscribed to this channel years ago because of calligraphy.. but i never expected that I'll be needing this tutorial video... I'm learning hiragana (yet) currently..i can read and write but not accurately since there are different stroke variations per character 😞 thank you so much for this. this is so helpful 😍
Thank you for sharing this. I just started learning Japanese 2 months ago. I can tell my Hiragana handwriting is sloppy even though I look at printed Hiragana, stroke order charts, and even animations. Simply watching someone closely with a pen and paper is helping me understand the proportions and shapes better! (Also, it helps me to slow down and not go into “writing English quickly” mode, to stop me turning my る into 3s for example.)
I'm just learning Japanese. Can you tell me how to improve my language? My teacher will teach me every day five characters in hiragana and katana and also some words
@@kalesy-b3r I am only a beginner too but in my experience the following helped me clear things up beyond the initial “memorize travel phrases” stage: 1) Start with a solid foundation of Hiragana and learn correct pronunciation of not only consonants and vowels but timing and stress. Use Romaji only at the very beginning and don’t become reliant on it. 2) Purchase a good pen you enjoy using. Get either a handwriting practice book or print out free sheets with the square grids. Pay attention to proportion, stroke order, and lifts (where you gradually lift the pen to produce elegant hooks). Printed Hiragana has a few small differences to handwritten. 3) Learn grammar, particles, and basic verb conjugation so you can form basic sentences. New vocabulary can be looked up and plugged in easily enough, but syntax is foundational. IMO this part is actually quite fun to learn as you can finally start stringing words together. Accept that, unless you speak Korean, Japanese is very different from your native language and forget translating word for word. Soon you’ll see how textbooks and computer translations make many assumptions to create dramatically correct English translations. (eg stating a subject when subject is often omitted in Japanese) 4) My favorite RUclips source is Yuko Sensei. She is native Japanese who teaches at a US college. She’s very thorough and shares many beginner’s mistakes she has encountered. She posts many free videos and also has paid courses. She uses the textbook Genki. Another useful textbook is “A Guide to Japanese Grammar” by Tae Kim. It is extremely dense and intimidating and you won’t absorb all of it on first reading. But if you are up to the challenge it helps provide a strong foundation of grammar and mentions many of those translation pitfalls I mentioned. 5) Don’t skip Kanji. Learn not only how to write them but how alternate pronunciations work in Japanese. Just as you should learn Hiragana and not rely on Romaji, you should also learn Kanji and not rely (solely) on Hiragana. 5) Don’t neglect listening practice. You can delude yourself by getting good at set examples and find out you don’t understand a word when it’s spoken at full speed. Personally I watch Japanese tourism vlogs of people visiting my hometown. They speak very naturally in realistic scenarios but i have some context of what they’re likely saying. Closed captions (when accurate) and titles can be copied and looked up. 6) Don’t forget the culture. With Japanese in particular the culture and language are inseparable so learning polite language, cultural practices, and etiquette will help you be a good visitor to Japan if you ever go. 7) Accept that this process will likely take years, so pace yourself and don’t be hard on yourself if progress is slow!
