Thats why its good to be different, this version is much less produced and polished, but Robert Knight hasn't got Steve Ellis's voice - Love Affair by the same miles in my opinion..
There is also a remix of this on youtube, with the piano mixed back and the Farfisa organ up front. This version here is the real deal. Thanks for posting. And this version is the gold standard.
I think Carl Carlton does a good job with this song but to me I think Robert's version is definitely the best. Love the way he does it and the music behind him. I remember when it came out in 67. And thinking wow what a great singer and song. He should have had more hits.
Just found this video and have listened to it 8 consecutive times. I was privileged to be Bob's friend and coworker at Vanderbilt from 1971-1976. His real name was Robert Peebles. He was a wonderful friend and he shared with me all his fabulous stories from the late 1960's, touring with Aretha and Al Green. During the time I knew him he never quit recording, trying for a follow up hit. He put out a second album and had a successful tour in Europe in about 1973. I'll never forget the party we threw upon his return . By the way, he knew his chemistry too.
How well I remember this from the Fall of 1967. Our troops were fighting in Dak To in Vietnam. After graduating from college I served as a Marine officer in command of a rifle platoon. This song takes me back to that time...
There's a very good reason why this is by far the very best recording of this song. The song was written for Robert by Buzz Caison and Mac Geyton. They were Robert's friends as well as his manager and producer and were responsible for every aspect of this recording. I had the privilege of being Robert's friend and coworker for the six years I lived in Nashville.
I just started to weep ! I just found out that Mr. Knight has left us, however this song ''Everlasting Love" will continue on forever ! Thank you Mr. Knight, God Bless You !!!
@Tim's Tips 🌿Those bongos blow me away, Tim. I live 60 miles from Detroit and loved hearing the background singers were Motown! I was a teen in '67 and for me, Robert Knight's version will always be the best. I picked up 580AM tonight on the car radio and they played it, so I had to Google it and hear it a few more times! Thanks for mentioning the other instruments. You're right...pure perfection❣️
@@diananutt1517 The background singers were probably The Anita Kerr Singers. They were the predominant background singers in Nashville in the 60's and 70's. I used to live in Ann Arbor.
@@tomzsenyuk2003 🌿 So nice to hear from a neighbor! And I love hearing details about those great songs. Did you ever listen to Randy Bachman's "Vinyl Tap" on CBC radio? He would tell about background info, like the Wrecking Crew, which I'm sure you are aware of. The 2 of you could probably talk for hours! I used to go to a lot of concerts at Meadowbrook and Pine Knob and the Fox Theatre. Bet you did, too! Sad to have lost Gordon Lightfoot, and then not so long ago, Art and Charles Neville. Keep on sharing what you know, Tom, especially about the oldies. P.S. When Joe Cocker came to Pine Knob (I'll never call it DTE!), his musicians and backup singers were so good, it was hard to focus on just one area! He just really wanted to present the best of everything to his fans.
Even though the melody is very repetitive the song completely captures me - I can't stop listening to it. What a flood of good memories it brings back! Oh, to be 75 again!
He worked menial jobs late in life at Vanderbilt, where it all started for him, singing in the frathouses. There is something authentic about that. I like to think he was treated fairly with regard to royalties.
Reminds me of Wildwood NJ in '67. Met the love of my life .Remember looking out a window with him at the Wildwood water tower while this song was playing on the radio thinking Wow did I luck out. Unfortunately he past at a young age and I never got to spend my life with him but he'll always be with me. Always is when I hear this song. Thank u Mr Knight....
Love all the versions of Everlasting Love. Robert Knight from '67, David Ruffin's version from his first solo album "My Whole World Ended" from '69,Carl Carlton's disco version from '74,Rex Smith and Rachel Sweet's rock version from '81,and Gloria Estefan's dance pop version from '94. That song is timeless and priceless.
Used to play a local oldies station at night while I slept as a teenager and they played this song a lot, leaving me waking up singing it. Man, was I heartbroken when the oldies station disappeared. Wish they'd bring it back. Always slept better when I would listen to oldies.
Both versions are great, imo. Not so much Gloria Estefan's version. She desecrated this wonderful song. Her version of _Turn the Beat Around_ by Vicki Sue Robinson also makes me cringe.
As a Brit, I only ever heard Love Affair's version, which I love. But this is wonderful. Love Affair's version will always have my heart because it is my youth, but credit must be given to the original.
Right. I don't think Carl Carlton's version was "disco-fied" but, in comparison to this version, it was unnecessarily "busy". This song is a good example of "Less is more".
Bought this 45 as my very first record with babysitting money. Absolutely still love this record, thanks for putting the picture. I remember watching this 45 go round and round 1000 times on my record player and of course singing along. Carl Carlton's version is true to the original. I also liked his voice but Robert Knight is a Heart Stopper.
I remember this song like it was yesterday. It reminds me of the girl I was dating. I was a junior in high school and now I'm 70! Where did all the time go?
Carl Carlton's version was great. It came out the year I started university. Some of the early disco like Barry White, Three Degrees, George MacCrea, and KC was pretty good, it wasn't that far removed from the Four Tops. But one of my teachers told me that there was an earlier version that was a minor hit when he was a student. That was Robert Knight's. I believe it has that 1967 "feel" so maybe there is such a thing as "zeitgeist". I won't say either is better than the other. I like both and think they're equally good.
This was a popular song back in my High School days. This will always be my favorite version; but I like the other 2 as well. Very sad, my High School is closing very soon....Lancers forever!

So many memories, I was 14 when this came out. It was mine and a very special girl's song together. When I hear this, it reminds me of her and I wonder how her life turned out. Beautiful song, beautiful girl, ah, young love, lol.

Let's dance
@@moemcgovern7345 They both came out in 1967.
This version rarely gets played, Robert Knight had this 1967 hit, and this version certainly deserves it's share of airtime
Hacked my girlfriends account? Fuck, why bother? If your at that point in a relationship you, her, or it is fucked. Just be single
I had to choreograph a dance for physical education class and I did it to this song.
I heard this version on the radio just 1 time. I believe it was KRIM-FM in Tuscon, AZ circa 1995.
Thanks Rick!
True!
The original version and the best in my opinion. It beats the other versions by a mile!
Thats why its good to be different, this version is much less produced and polished, but Robert Knight hasn't got Steve Ellis's voice - Love Affair by the same miles in my opinion..
BUT I LIKE CARL CARLTON'S VERSION PRETTY GOOD TOO.
For me it's one of those songs that you (almost) can't ruin. I grew up and am a big fan of Sandra Cretu's version
I also love the Love Affair version and video ,
Every generation needs to keep this song alive
I certainly agree with you 👍
Madonna should cover it
Listened to other versions and this original is hands down the best
I agree with you Lena 100%!!!
Like it soooo much more than the Little Carl Carlton version. RIP Robert.
That's a matter of opinion, isn't it? I like Carl Carlton's version much more. Again, opinion.
There is also a remix of this on youtube, with the piano mixed back and the Farfisa organ up front. This version here is the real deal. Thanks for posting. And this version is the gold standard.
Carl Carlton slayed this.
The first and greatest version of the song. Robert Knight rocks!
You've got that right!! Just as I remember it ... had the 45rpm back in 1967.

1967. My high school graduation year. This song is as good as it was then. Time has added a patina which enhances its value today. Wonderful!
