I was 11 in 1972. The words of this song hit me later in life. My father passed two weeks before my 38th birthday. His funeral was on the day before my birthday. It poured rain that whole day of the funeral, like the sky was crying with me. There's just no good time to lose someone you love.

I was born is 69. I was deeply moved by this song. My dad passed at the age of 61. I was only 38. Like you and so many, I felt lost and alone. What comforts me is the universality. Not one person is not affected by loss. "Want do we do?". Collectively. No one is immune to pain. Sure that doesn't minimize your own grief, but instead makes you cognizant others may be better equipped to comfort the mourners or those experiencing grief as they were themselves equipped to handle it and now can help another. Bless you. And, God never left His alone. Hugs.

I was 19 when this wonderful song was recorded. I felt so grown up then. Now suddenly I'm 71 and I don't know where all those years went. Looking back across the years, I had so much growing up yet to do, and now I'm the older generation.

I understand completely. My amazing Father died when I was 11 years old, in 1975. My Mom and Dad were 42 years old when he passed away from a sudden Heart Attack. I dreamed about his passing 3 days before it actually happened. My Mom fell apart and couldn't even dial our push button phone. I had to handle the whole thing, which is what I did in my dream. God truly prepared me for what I had to do and I'm grateful for it. Four years later, the last dream I had of him, he said, I have to go now. He hugged me and disappeared. Fast forward to 2023, I had an NDE, and I got to see my Dad, and his Parents, my wonderful Grandparents. Dad smiled at me, walked up to me, and spun me around and I came back. Not my time, but just seeing them even briefly, did me a world of good. It was indescribable, but so amazing. I miss all 3 of them, and the pain of losing them has never left me. I was just too young. However knowing I will get to spend eternity with them in Heaven, gives me such great peace.

There's so many of us. Orphaned later in life - just the way life is meant to be. If you're lucky, you will have so many great memories to cherish. I know I do, even when it wasn't all a bed of roses. But I'm truly grateful for what my parents gave me. I try to pass those many good things on to my children - just the way life is meant to be, if you're lucky enough to be blessed with children.
It's allright to mourn. To miss your parents. To feel sad about the loss. But remember: it's a good sign. The feeling tells you that life has worked out just the way it should. Count your blessings. And know that you're not alone. Naturally.

Why do Boomers always have to come to the comments and attempt to elevate their generation by putting down those that came after? In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
    And visit a nearby tower
    And climbing to the top
    Will throw myself off
    In an effort to
    Make it clear to whoever
Wants to know what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Were people saying, My God, that's tough
    She stood him up
    No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
    Alone again, naturally
    To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
    Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
    Cut me into little pieces
    Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
    Why did he desert me
    In my hour of need
    I truly am indeed
    Alone again, naturally
    It seems to me that
There are more hearts broken in the world
    That can't be mended
    Left unattended
    What do we do
    What do we do
    Alone again, naturally
    Looking back over the years
    And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
    And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
    Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
    Despite encouragement from me
    No words were ever spoken
    And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
    Alone again, naturally
    Alone again, naturally

I was a little girl when this song came out, I was a teenager in the eighties and light simple pop and rock was my thing. As an adult I started broadening my musical tastes,of course, and I can whole heartedly say nothing beats the music styles and the songs from the seventies. Songs told stories, some were catchy, some were intense, some were sad ,but 99 per cent were well crafted and you could feel there was talent and hard work behind. Please show me any of that in any of the lame tunes you hear now. Gilbert O Sullivan, like Tod Rudgren,Scott Mckenzie, Brian Protheroe or Al Stewart wrote some of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to, I'm so glad we have Spotify or RUclips to keep enjoying them and to discover dozens of others who belonged in that glorious decade and are there for us to discover and listen to! Thanks for the video of this young Gilbert,!

I always thought it sounded like a bright, cheerful, upbeat type of a tune all of these years, until I listened to the lyrics, just today. I can’t believe how depressing those lyrics are. And that “kid” was only 21 years old when he wrote that stuff. So, what did a 65 year old man do after listening to about the saddest song in history? Like the tune says, “”.

We didn't get by "day by day"...it was "one second after the next and one breath after the next" until it all slowly added up to a year and we could go home. I was surrounded by thousands of other GIs going through the same deep, dark depression in a shit hole eight thousand miles from home. For those of you who've never experienced something like this, you have no right to ever criticize combat veterans.

I can imagine that would be so good played on sax. Gilbert O’Sullivan was my teenage music days - loved his music and all the rest of the 70’s music - such a wide range of great music in the day and didn’t know we were so lucky. So many favourites - Slade was a favourite for a good while, wizard, David Bowie, sweet, just so many different genres - not to forget elvis of course and just coming off the back of the fabulous 60’s - we were so lucky to have all that wonderful music in the day

What a hauntingly sad but beautiful song. I remember it from the good old days of the Second half of the twentieth Century when truth and reality had the upper hand.
