A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Author George R. R. Martin Interview on the Hound/Sandor Clegane and the history of House Clegane
I think Sandor is the most relatable character in the book. He is pretty much a nobody, except that he is big, strong, and good at killing. His redemption ark was really very enjoyable to read. He starts out with an apparent lack of morals, but the struggles of protecting the Stark girls slowly chips away at his heart of stone. Rory McCann did such a great job playing Sandor.
Hes definitely not a nobody, maybe a nobody in terms of royalty, but he was technically from a noble family. Which puts him above 90% of Westeros's inhabitants.
I think that title goes to Davos. My two best characters in GOT are Davos and the Hound.
I think whats most important about Sandor is that he is very intelligent, despite not being highly educated like most of the lords and their sons. Not in a sence of "professor of quantum-physics" intelligent. But because he was on the "backline" most of the time, he had time to see, evaluate and think. His grumpy demeanor is more of a fasade, to fool the ones that can get rid of him just because they were born into slightly more importand house.
He knows when to act, and when to back off. Knows what he can and he cant do. Sure, he has some ideals and you can see it. But he also knows that dying for some ideals is not worth it, if you can wait things out. I wonder how would the political game of the series turn out, if he would be one of the main "players".
@@alexxander9428 They probably meant a nobody compared to most characters the story revolves around. Sandor is not a knight, nor is he the heir to his family's fortunes. He's the second son, so he must seek his fortunes elsewhere. Writing this I realized that the mercenary company "Second Sons" is named that just because of the same reason. They are not the inheritors of wealth, so they take up a life of sellswordsmanship.
Does The Hound look out for Sansa because he sort of saw himself in the cruel treatment Joffrey gave her much like Gregor did to him when they were boys?
I love the way he speaks like a historian as if all of this is factual.
This reminds me of my grandfather. He was the only relative who spoke about WWII (we were on the losing side and my grandparents were all damaged in one way or another). He didn't make any side look good and didn't paint himself as a hero nor victim. He didn't care to look good, nor was he bound by an ideology or hatred. He has seen the most terrible things and nearly died on multiple occasions, but visited his former enemy for fun. Meanwhile, I've met people who continued to bear a grudge against their former enemies two generations later.
He might have been a psychopath, but compared to the latter people, I think better of him. Seriously, I know someone who nearly had his fingers cut off because of the sins of his ancestors! Personally, I had to see as a kid our car getting deglassed because we had the _wrong_ license plate... That was more than half a century after the frigging war ended!

The thing is I always thought that the Hound deep inside was a good man. He actually wants to be a better man, and believe in justice, but he is angry that there is no justice.
It might be slightly more complex than that.
@@prawngravy18 Maybe maybe not but try and make a case.
I wouldn't say a good man, instead i would say a man loyal to his thoughts. Because in a Sansa's chapter he admits that the thing he enjoys the most is killing people and survive in that world destroying the "weak people", those who aren't able to protect themselves.

In a lot of ways, Sandor is as honest as a Stark. Sure folks don't like what he has to say, but he doesn't sugar coat anything. Jon, Ned, Robb, and the other Starks were kinda similar in many ways. Wolves and dogs are pretty similar, regardless of the differences.

Not just one of the best characters on the show, one of the best characters in the history of television. Almost every single scene with him was amazing.
Sandor truly is the Prince that was Promised. He meets all the criteria. Especially being touched by fire.
Damn, this was a thinker 🤔
Criteria:
Born again amidst salt and smoke
Under a bleeding star
Wake dragons from stone (only a king's blood can)
Pull a sword named Lightbringer from flames (forged first in Water, then in the heart of a Lion then in the person they Love)
Use it to combat an impending darkness, defeat the Long Night
Theirs is the song of fire and ice
Sandor: max 2 of them but it's a stretch
Stannis: weak 2-3 and soon another but he'll die at some point
Jon Snow: 4 by the end, he's also literally the prince that was promised by Ned
Daenerys: solid 4 so far, likely all of them by the end

I assumed it was a passage lifted straight from the books.
The Hound was one of my favorite characters. His character development was so well done and he easily has some of the best one-liners in GOT
The f***s a Lommy?
Quite simply a fantastic character and more importantly portrayed by a brilliant actor to bring it to life from the pages.
"During the Middle Ages, a squire on the night before his knighting ceremony was expected to take a cleansing bath, fast, make confession, and then hold an all-night vigil of prayer in the chapel, preparing himself in this manner for life as a knight. For the knighting ceremony, he dressed in white as a symbol for purity and over that was placed a red robe to show his readiness to be wounded, over which a black robe was placed as a symbol of his willingness to die for his king."
The Stark sigil animal, the Direwolf, protects them. The Lannister sigil animal, the Lion, tried to kill him. The Irony of Got never gets old.
ASoIaF is the post modern answer to Tolkien’s idealism and love for myth. Here’s hoping Martin can stick the landing with the final book(s).
Amen to that
I mean the kids also raised their direwolf from babies once their mother died. The lion was a fully grown. Lions are only friendly up to a certain age, once their older they very aggressive to people they dont know. If tytus raised the lion from a cub she would protect him too
@Jcorb House Stark's symbol is obviously the Direwolf, and the children are protected by theirs, hwoever House Lannister's symbol is the lion, and Tytos Lannister is almost killed by one. It's ironic because House Lannister claims to be a proud house, yet their symbol has tried to kill them, while House Stark has no such claims and befriends their symbol.
@@EvaRavian That's because Tytos wasn't a real lion it's symbolic of how he wasn't really like a Lannister he was weak and let people take advantage of him.

What is the Sandor accent ? I can't quite place it ....there might be hint of Scottish ? ( though nothing like McCann's real voice).
@@Simpleburger1968 It is certainly Scottish, much more than a hint. He used to iron it out with a bit of non-rhotic delivery in the early seasons but he had mostly gave that up by the end.

The Hounds story from beginning to end was flawless.
My favorite character of all time, made truly whole by the actor who portrayed him.
the saddest thing about george just giving up, is that when he is on, he might be one of the greatest storytellers in the history of literature. the depth of the world he created is amazing, the story he was telling was so detailed an in depth that I think he overwhelmed himself.
I don’t know if he gave up, but he definitely has either the most severe case of writer’s block, or has written himself into a corner and has nowhere to go. A Song of Ice and Fire will never be finished.

@@ryanbellerose9065 I wouldn't say he was "no work ethic". I mean I drive myself half insane trying to write a research paper longer than 5 pages. Writing 1000-page books full of world building takes a lot of grind especially when you gotta to make it compelling.
this is what makes great writers. they dont just write the story, They live in it. he talks as if they actually existed. amazing!
It's easier than you think when you base something off of actual history.
I feel if Sandor was to meet people or go to somewhere where honour is more there like Middle earth or to meet Percy Jackson or such, he'd believe in the knightly things. Because he'd have people who don't think of Gregor as a knight, who actually give justice and who would make him feel whole, he'd probably pledge his service to those like Aragorn and Percy, people who really look and act like leaders, kings, etc.
The Hound meeting Percy Jackson is something my brain cannot come up with a scenario for
The kings and leaders in got are the ones who act like kings and leaders do irl, only in fantasies to kings and leaders across history have any sense of morality.

This is why i love George R.R martin. Every one has a story, a background. Deeper meaning to the character. Love the hound.
My wife is in love with book Sandor.
I always wondered if Sandor protected Arya and Sansa because of his sisters death.
I always felt he sympathized with sansa in kings landing because it was similar to how he grew up. Yes the cleganes land was theirs, but he didn’t feel safe with his brother and also his dad’s protective nature for his brother. He felt vulnerable at all times the same as sansa, then Arya. That’s my thought.
I thought it was because underneath all that rough he is a good man
@@dericmccoy8175 Nope. He despised people like Sansa. He didn't act like Sansa as a child, he faced the worst yet still grew up to be so strong. He just pitied Sansa and changed in the end for Arya.

Tyrion was only great until they made him tell dick jokes most of the time.
'The hound' character is so alive and so real! This is true masterpiece. Many people can relate to him and his struggles. To see wrongs in this life and just move on. My favorite character :)
The sad thing is that while Sandor sees through the lies of knighthood and chivalry, all it does is make him more cynical, violent and cruel. It makes him depressed, drunk and on some level disgusted with himself, but he never quite takes the step to leave it all behind. (except if you believe the gravedigger theory, which I do) Sansa, Brienne and Dunk, perhaps naievely, believe all or some of those stories but grow into much kinder persons (book Sansa, not that cynical rubbish that the show did with her character), even as they grow to understand how little those ideals are lived up to and how they are used cynically for personal gain.
Yeah because its a historically accurate depiction of how politics and government worked back in that time. What the fuck was he supposed to do, take a sabbatical, vacation in Miami and come back refreshed? This is GoT, not dragonlance.

My fav character in the series .Totally pure ,no minced words nothin
People complain about how long George is taking to write these books and for a while I was the same and I don’t blame them for how they feel but...
With how much depth and story he gives you, about how basically every side C-F tier character in his books have stories that are interesting enough to be whole novels in thier own right, especially after I have been trying to write myself, I more then understand why it’s taken him so long. I mean seriously characters I’d write and forget about as soon as they aren’t serving the story get their own entire sub plots that for most writers, would just be a novel/Novella unto themselves. It’s seriously mind blowing.
So how did he write the first books then? What are you talking about? He got super rich and famous from the shitty HBO series. There’s no need to search for the reason when it’s staring you in the face.

The Hound and Jaime are very much alike I think. Both are men with a good heart who have lost their way because of the evil that surrounded them. If one is surrounded by butchers it is only a matter of time before one simply gives up and follows the same path.
Good men dont kill 19 year old stable boys or push young boys off buildings to kill them
@@johnnycombs7459 indeed. Which is why i said they have lost their way. Yer wholly evil men do not regret or try to make amends. The best character of the series for me, bc he doesn't care for changing the world nor does he expect it to change, he sees and accepts humanity for the shit that it is and always will be and doesn't sees himself as an exception, bc he knows what he is, knows that he's no better, and ironically that alone makes him an exception, he doesn't make false expectations, and he doesn't seek power or empty titles, but still he's willing to defend what he believes is still good, even if he doesn't want to.

I liked the father of Sandor and Gregor too. He's only in lore, but he is not bad character
The Mountain is pretty badass though ngl.
@@jonathandevers6609 Well, as badass as a rapist can be.
@@imonymous Well he is really badass in most ways but he is (also) really bad. As bad morally in most world views, having murdered and raped innoceents, helpless and... by the drove just for self gain and more importantly here fun.
But then again I guess "most badass" characters in stories ("movies/books") or got are quite bad morally speaking. The Hound for example while not being a pure sadist he has killed and maimed countless for his own benefit. But he has his own kinda code and his capable of love and kindness and has become a real fan favorite really quickly as he formed a (cool or funny,...) relationship with a lot of the main characters (Sansa and Arya Starks, Tyrion,...) and stands out as being someoen true to himself even if the things he does are bad. In a world that is quite realistic where ideals are mostly ideals and idealist often get there throat slit and seem helpless.
So yeah you are right and you can be real badass for helping people or doing epic things that don't really harm others or really benefit or save others. But people who are considered badass often have done bad things. :)

It’s Rory McCaan. Rory McIlroy is a pro golfer.
Give Daenerys some slack, she's been living on the other side of the world without TV
@@TheLordofDarkness1995: His name is Rory McCann!
Sandor is probably one of the best writtten characters in fantasy. Hes the everyman.
Ok but now I'd like to know more about Westerosi fauna. Lions in the Westerlands?
There were lions in Europe at one time, as recently as the common era if I recall correctly.
@@meghanjamieson6133 Yeah shit. I knew they used to have a larger habitat but a quick google indicates they inhabited S. Europe as early as 3rd century BC. That's cool.
The other thing is that Westeros while based on Europe is not Europe. They eat corn in Westeros which is from indigenous people of North America, not Europe. When people asked Martin about this he said he knew and that Westeros isn't Europe.
@@alexhoward1884: An welcher Stelle im Buch wird Mais gegessen?
The reason i always loved the Hound both in the series and the books is because he, despite all his flaws and and deep seated anger, is still a protector (of women) at heart. He could've easily kidnapped and r-worded Sansa during the blackwater, or done similar things to Arya, yet chose not to.

I could listen to Rory read all day
He was a dope character. The mountain could have been better, I think if maybe one actor had played him throughout it would have been better
