Marvel's might and fan base makes game of thrones look like nothing. Besides, there arent 7 avengers movies, those are the big titles. The others do well, but there arent 7 avengers
There’s no way a movie per book would be sufficient or true to the text. Anyone who’s read Lord of The Rings and the Harry Potter books know how much was cut from the books in order to fit into a movie
GRRM told D&D how the story would continue and how it would end when the show reached the end of the books so what's happening in the show will happen in the books.
@@theM4R4T actually it's true. In philosophical sense the main story is justifiable. But, in practical sense no, because the reasoning is not solid enough. The problem with GRRM writing pace is not that he dont know the ending (he always know what the ending will be mainly), but like what he said in this video, he struggle with the journey to the ending. Every small details always keep coming up, and he want a perfect story. I dont blame him though, the story have grown much bigger than how he intended or imagined. It's his magnum opus after all. @@TheAndymacm Well he told them the end of somme the characters, Bran King, Jaime and Cersei deads etc, etc. But he didn't told them how thats going to finish like that, first cause he haven't wrote that and second the series ignored several plots from the books, so is quite imposible we are going to see the same exact end.
Martin is very fortunate that as a living writer he's been able to maintain a high degree of creative control on the adaptation of his work onto the screen. Tolkien's response to the preposterous outline screenplay sent to him in 1957 by Ackerman and Zimmerman gives I think, some insight into what his response would have been to the 'Hobbit movie Trilogy'.

The source material ran out at the end of Season 5, though. And Season 6 was definitely better than Season 5. I think D&D just got a little too carried away by the coke binges and stopped giving a shit about something they were bored of, and wanted to move on to greener Star Wars pastures. GRRM said he had enough material to feed them material for 3-5 more seasons, and HBO gave them a blank check, but they simply were not interested. GRRM himself stopped being actively involved in production in Season 5, which coincides with the point at which most people consider it to have "gone bad." I don't necessarily agree that GRRM portrayal of women has been negative at all. I feel like its been actually very wonderfully real and at times has shown just how much power women have had in history and in general, but that reality has often been overlooked. If anything one could argue that his stories are even wonderfully feminist. I mean... by the end of season 7 of the show many of the major houses are leaded by women. Cersei is the queen of Westeros on the iron throne, Dany is the last dragon come to claim the throne for herself, Sansa has taken up the role of wardeness of the north as Jon bends the knee to Dany. Arya has rebelled completely from her role as a women in her family to instead become this badass assassin defending her family. Even Brianne of Tarth goes against tradition to become a knight, and a damn good one too. Even the women of Dorn conspire to overthrow the ruler there and his son and take control. The Greyjoys are run by yara now that Theon has been reduced to a eunuch. The women are essentially running the whole of Westeros by the beginning of season 8 and obviously there are some leader male characters too but to call GRRM story sexist in any way is absolutely ridiculous. I mean he even wrote the whores in the story as complex and intelligent characters. And thats part of why I love the story... it's not just that he writes powerful women, but he writes them earnestly. He writes the pain they go through and their trials as well as their victories. And most importantly he doesn't write the men strictly as villains. The men are equally fighting for the throne as much as the women are. Which is something I loath from stories that just want to make a bland feminist story for the sake of feminism. I know he didn't go out if his way to write something feminist, he was just writing truth... and thats whats great. I think people who want to complain about sexism in the story like Sansa getting raped or maybe even cersei (although the way that scene was written was different from the way it was portrayed), people complaining about these things just want to see boring stories of strong women without ever seeing how they are hurt or the trials they go through. That kind of feminist is just... in short, not very smart. The story is a brutal one with very graphic sex and violence. Its not for children whatsoever. I would argue not even for adults if theyre not mentally prepared or mature enough... But its truth, and the truth about life is that it is fucking brutal as hell. To everyone.
GRRM’s genius changed TV and pop culture, proving how powerful a writer’s imagination can be. Without these incredible storytellers movies and TV would’ve never been revolutionized.
Money surely did play a role in this disaster. Filming at night means you can skimp on the costs to animate the scenes. If you can´t see shit, you can´t spot the mistakes. There was so much source material to provide a better story finish, that the way they went is insulting. I always envisioned the end to happen at King´s Landing, and that the cache of wildfire would play a role. Or even have The Mountain deliver the killing blow to the NK, since he is already dead, but under magic control. Picture the possibilities. So many ways it could go, and we got this abomination! I lost all interest in the show now. If all the characters have plot armor, the chances of an exciting conclusion are nil.
@@Biden_is_demented exactly, this last season had so luch source material and potential but what HBO did with it was a slap in the face to all viewers that arent braindead.
@Kevin Begley >"If HBO did care about keeping the thinking audience, they would never have produced 8e03! You could argue the same with some previous episodes, but this one can’t be denied." This is just ridiculous conspiratory nonsense revealing you have little understanding of how stuff works. HBO's production team may have a say in terms of budgets, and also input in the quality of the product, due to its huge popularity. But the overwhelming responsibility is with the writers of the show -- and the directors (who are actually the saving grace of GoT; even in episode 3, the direction was really well, with all of the strongest parts coming from there) of course. But in regards to the issues we talk about, the writers have the sole responsibility here. And it's fairly obvious people like you, who didn't start criticizing before episode 3 of season 8, are very unaware of any of this. Game of Thrones took at a nosedive already from Season 5 and onward (with clear examples of bad quality in single episodes of season 4, even). Season 5-7 were all full of bad writing and story-lines as well, especially season 7 and 5. As for season 8, all the episodes have been "bad" (as in compared to season 1-4) overall. And it's not due to some HBO conspiracy, but to Benioff and Weiss being terrible writers. In the earlier parts, most of their job relied on adapting the brilliant storytelling and dialogues of GRRM, with the "weak" parts, aside from budgetary limitations, being how well or bad they did the adaptations. But in later seasons, where they've been forced to make original content, you truly see how bad they are as screenwriters. Sociopolitical and historical depth and themes of the story, that were engraved in everything Martin wrote, is long gone. Characters are just caricatures of themselves, repeating the same lines and actions as before, with minor variations, rather than actually providing new stuff ( Mormont girl does the same "I'm not a little girl schtick"; Jon keeps having his "doom and glory" monologues; Jorah gives Dany "hard truth" advice that she inevitably accepts; Davos gives convincing speeches, etc.). And the stories, actions and consequences, all engraved in the super-realistic and anti-conventional style that defined GoT is now full of conventions and Hollywood cliches; conflicts and battles that used to have strategic weight behind them in earlier seasons, with focus on troop numbers, movement, logistics and positions, is thrown out of the window in later ones. Characters that used to die randomly and unjust, due to bad decisions, now continuously survive the most ridiculous situations (Beyond the wall plot i S7, Jamie charging Dany in S7, everyone surviving everything in S8E3). And even those who die, die a heroic death (Jorah, Edd, Mormont girl), in complete contradiction to GoT storylines (Robb, Ned, The Viper, etc.) Even deus ex machinas, which GRRM absolutely hated, are appearing all over the place. And notice that this has been going on for quite some time. Despite that, people like you did not even once complain about it, and seemed to enjoy the show quite a lot when it was going on. The chessy dialogues and cliched screewriting, that has been dominating since season 5, and the complete reversal of everything the world of Song of Ice and Fire was, and also in many ways demonstrated in earlier seasons, was not criticized by any of you in all that time. No criticism of inconsistent pacing, with unnecessary filler in some places and rushed plots in others. No criticism of plot directions that are full of logical fallacies. No calling out of the butchering of certain characters, or the awful dialogues (like the Sand Snakes). You then go on writing "Finally, HBO offers nothing for the thinking audience (save Real Sports, which is brilliantly ironic). They do offer some shows which masquerade as thoughtful", again demonstrating how you're completely out of touch with reality. Last year HBO produced Sharp Objects, which along with AMC's The Terror was the best show of 2018 and a masterpiece worthy of a spot alongside the greatest shows of that channel. Over the last few years, Olive Kitteridge, The Deuce and Big Little Lies have also continued to substantiate HBO's quality TV reputation. It may not be the golden days of The Wire, Sopranos and Rome, but the channel is still providing great quality among all its other mainstream stuff.
Kevin Begley well the imagine this: I got this from an acquaintance at HBO. Game of Thrones was intentionally ruined. The ending was butchered on purpose. In about a year and a half or so, just before election season, they will announce that they have an alternate ending or something like that, but they will only release it if Donald Trump does not get re-elected. I hear that HBO was directly ordered to do this 2 years ago by whoever controls Hollywood. (Most likely politicians). Btw I don’t give 2 shits about politics. I don’t even vote. It sounds crazy just wait and see.

Willoughby Krenzteinburg yeah well no film adaption in this genre has done true to the books. LOTR was great film, but a disservice to the original content. The first season here was great, it naturally missed a lot of great stuff, but as I said consistently deteriorated. 6,7, and 8 so far are pure GARBAGE compared to Martins writing
@@factbeaglesarebest You're being far too hard. The writing has definitely lost a step, but what is the alternative really? You are clearly partial to Martin's writing, and that is a perfectly reasonable opinion. When they signed on to do the show 10 years ago, Martin was confident he would have the story finished. That didnt happen. Martin has literally added nothing to the story that existed at the time they signed on and were told the source material would be there by the time they needed it. It wasnt. Are they supposed to just go on hiatus for an amount of time Martin doesnt even know at this point it will take to finish the story while all the actors age by 5, 10, 15, who knows how many years? I would love to read the two books that remain unwritten. But I'm SO glad and thankful for the five books I've read and for the hours and hours of great films I've watched over and over that even if the show doesn't end as I would like to, or even if the 6th and 7th books never hit bookshelves, I'm still fascinated with what I've experienced and humm The Rains of Castamere or Jenny's Song and remember how I got to care for a one handed incestious knight that murdered childern, a dragon queen and a bastard with the bluest blood as I walk on the streets. "I should be doing that right now. You're interfering with me. I'm sure this book will be a year late just because of you." Martin is genuinely funny. I love his humor so much! 😂
It's been a great story so far, but we will have to wait until the end. The ending of a story is the most crucial part and it separates great stories from true masterpieces. I really hope and believe that the ending of GoT will make it a masterpiece.
Kasey Lee lol the Bible has some great stories in it , I suspect none of you have actually read it front to back, you’d be surprised how much literature is derivative of it in one way or another. You don’t need to believe in God to appreciate it.
Seeing George in that black RX-7 got me thinking, is he still a car guy? I'd gladly be his mechanic, build him some rotaries and such. He can easily afford to enjoy the hobby now.
I just keep watching the series and for example when Jon joined the wildlings, he told Mance Rayder the story of how Craster gave his babies to the white walkers and that lord commander Mormont knew about it and chose to ignore it. After this Jon said something along the line of "I want to be on the side that fights for the living. Did I come to the right place?". Jon thought to say this to Mance on the spot and if he hadn't said something similar I doubt that Mance would ever take Jon into his wildling camp. In the history books, though, I know that the books will most likely only say "And then Aegon Targaryen joined the Free Folk, led my Mance Rayder" and I think that that's pretty interesting
i hope he takes the time to finish the story on his own terms. In my mind there is the part of the series inspired by the books which is a pure joy: paced skillfully, high stakes and deep character development with very complex morals and ethics, aaaaand then there is the rest which is a significantly skinnier plot, feeling sort of rushed event-wise, with a biased writing and low stakes. and that is an understandable choice because they dont have entire books to harvest inspiration from anymore. I really hope he finishes it. im not a booky guy, but man would i be glued to such a book.
The world will likely never see the likes of Tolkien and Martin again. Those two minds devizing the most complete worlds down to geneology, geography, languages, history, religions, mass characterizations, other-worldly beasts and beings ect. And they did it each in their own way....their own style. Neither is better than the other. They are equal but different. Two geniuses whose minds had no limitations.
His life's work is forever stained with the travesty that is ep3. He should've never allowed such hacks to create a show based on his unfinished work. Sad. Tolkien stands alone.
It’s always baffled me how these types of writers come up with so much depth. Tolkien obviously was ocd about his world and I think Martin is too. You have to really start caring about characters to make up an ancestory and languages for them.
Hearing David and Dan speak about the books so passionately makes me feel sad to think about how they basically froze George out of the writing process after season 4 and wrote a fanfiction with a budget.
Just more democrats using Hollywood as their stepping stone after they inevitably sell their soul to the kiddie touching devil , who happens to be the father of all polticians and hollyweirdos.
Well, maybe it would be for the best that he never finishes it then? The show will end and the fans will always wonder about what could have been the most amazing ending to a series ever. I have a feeling that by creating an alternative ending (tvshow) it messes with how he see the ending in the books. Especially considering how the audience will react to the ending of the tvshow.
"when we went to Goerge it was probably like that bluff where you mistakenly think you have it straight but u actually don't" now that explains a lot about the shit that has been going down in Season 8
That exchange between Catelyn and Jamie is probably the best detailing of how what seems black and white can very much be grey. Probably one of the best exchanges Martin ever wrote. 17:40 "Nobody's going to commit to that (seven movies)" Oh George, if only you could've known how big of a hit the MCU would be.
Gosh, I've not watched many interviews with this guy until recently and he seems like a thoughtful and chill dude. I hope he lives long enough to finish his story. I'm not reading the books till they are all written and I would love to see this story finished by the author himself.
Well it seems that D&D have broke their promise to a faithful adaptation of the books. The series needed to be 13 or 14 seasons long. I know people say it would get old and people would lose interest but that’s only true if you don’t have a compelling story to tell. Shows like the Walking Dead are different because they are telling the same story over and over but adding new characters. Game of Thrones has so much more to offer but they set a end date regardless of the amount of story left and needed to be told to bring about a satisfying ending. They rushed the last two seasons and left fans confused and upset because we didn’t see the characters evolve enough into what they ultimately become. I know it’s not realistic to perfectly adapt a book to television but they just decided they wanted to move on and they threw it together. I know HBO wanted them to continue the series and so did George but they wouldn’t budge on going past 8 seasons. I know George wanted like 14 seasons. It’s really sad because it could have been so much more than what we got. Don’t get me wrong, the cinematography was absolutely stunning and the production was amazing but the story really suffered due to the rushed ending. Regardless, in my eyes Game of Thrones is by far the best show to ever be on television and I am hopeful that some of what we as fans feel like was missing from this series will be addressed in the sequel.
Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the performances, directing, episodic writing, cinematography, directing, visual effects, or production value; surely not!
As an amateur writer myself I highly suspect George has an issue myself and probably a lot of others have with writing.. That being we get in the zone and have our stories "pour out" like Grrm mentioned but there comes a point where that spring dries up and it feels more tedious and offputting to finish, likewise in big sprawling epics it can be daunting trying to figure out how to tie all the plots and points together. It can feel similar to writers block, daunting and tedious, however the lack of knowing where to go isnt an huge issue, just trying to make it all fit in a way that writing and finishing it doesnt feel like a chore. In other words, once that "pouring out" phase ends it can feel very monotonous to work on something so big for so long. Either way I just hope George gets his inspiration for these stories back before myself or him dies.
" I wanna a faithful adaptation of the books." "That's what we want too..." Oof. Maybe seasons 1 - 4 were as faithful as they could but season 5, it was just sad. And it's not because George hadn't finished TWOW. There is so much material left out of AFFC and ADWD that could've supplied at least two more seasons! Plus D&D added a lot more unnecessary scenes and characters that aren't in the books! So even before George missed the deadline... D&D were off the rails, not being faithful.

Exactly and what’s sad are many people haven’t read the books and think those last seasons are actually part of the real story
GRRM himself stopped being actively involved in production in Season 5, which coincides with the point at which most people consider it to have "gone bad." But honestly I think that cutting the Tysha plot at the end of Season 4 (and thus removing all of Tyrion's character development in the following season) was the writing on the wall. Alas, what might have been.

I don't necessarily agree that GRRM portrayal of women has been negative at all.

You could argue the same with some previous episodes, but this one can’t be denied."
This is just ridiculous conspiratory nonsense revealing you have little understanding of how stuff works.
Kevin Begley well the imagine this:
I got this from an acquaintance at HBO.
They knew what they were doing before they lost all the source material and decided they were too stressed and bored with it by season 5.

@@factbeaglesarebest You're being far too hard. The writing has definitely lost a step, but what is the alternative really? That didnt happen. Martin has literally added nothing to the story that existed at the time they signed on and were told the source material would be there by the time they needed it. It wasnt. Are they supposed to just go on hiatus for an amount of time Martin doesnt even know at this point it will take to finish the story while all the actors age by 5, 10, 15, who knows how many years? After this Jon said something along the line of "I want to be on the side that fights for the living. Did I come to the right place?".
Jon thought to say this to Mance on the spot and if he hadn't said something similar I doubt that Mance would ever take Jon into his wildling camp.
In the history books, though, I know that the books will most likely only say "And then Aegon Targaryen joined the Free Folk, led my Mance Rayder" and I think that that's pretty interesting

That exchange between Catelyn and Jamie is probably the best detailing of how what seems black and white can very much be grey. Probably one of the best exchanges Martin ever wrote.
17:40 "Nobody's going to commit to that (seven movies)"
Oh George, if only you could've known how big of a hit the MCU would be.
I hope DnD get around to making season 7! I'm so hyped how they continue the insane cliffhanger of season 6, as it's been 6 years since then
I adore George!! Just love him.
i had this very soft warm yet sadden smile in my face around 3:00 when the image of sir TOLKIEN appeared ..
may his soul live always
I feel like currently, George Martin enjoys giving interviews about his masterpiece way more than actually completing it
as long as he completes it i dont give a shit how long it takes.
And how many masterpieces have you written? Then again, an interview for anything you have accomplished?
@@joseallende8046 A very silly reply, thanks for the laugh.
@@LOLERXP silly reply to a douchy comment.
@@notyou4616 What's douchy about it, was just a half-joking observation. Some people are really touchy about this it seems.
Now this was an intelligent, truly informative video. Thanks for sharing!
The first chapter just came to me , he said it like he was possessed or something.
He was.
Don't know how this guy managed to make me more interested in a fantasy world, more then the one we live in.
His talent is out of this world
stoked that I've found Aegon Targaryen's youtube channel
I never get tire listening to G.R.R.M talking
Thanks for the long one!
21:00 "we never produced anything for television before" while the other is chuckling. gods it was right there before us the whole time
Total respect to George !!!
Gosh, I've not watched many interviews with this guy until recently and he seems like a thoughtful and chill dude. I hope he lives long enough to finish his story. I'm not reading the books till they are all written and I would love to see this story finished by the author himself.
17:30 "nobody is gonna commit to that"
ARE YOU SURE GEORGE
Never heard of the mcu I guess.
@@studiocigsplain8588 superheroes appeal to all ages. Can't have kids watch GOT lol
thanks qyburn. great narrating
I mourn GoT for the masterpiece that it started off as, not the fanfiction that it came to be.
Watching this scene with D&D makes me want to scream.
He has a very cute laughter. Mr Santa Claus. Can I give you a hug?
Live long and write plenty, George!
I thought I was listening to Dave Ramsey at 19:00 payoff your debt and learn to say no
what a beautiful piece of art ! the books and the series ! thank you to all
Such a brilliant mind!
to hear George talk about his baby is so bloody awesome & shit at the same time cos we all saw season 8 that should have never come to light.
Not an english map mate its britian. The north remembers.
The Norse Rememberers
After episode 3.... 'look how they massacred my boy'
The Narrator sounds like the Discovery channel dude
Pretty sure it's the guy who did the audiobooks aka the High Sparrow
It's Melvin Bragg
I just saw this scene about tyrions trial again.. and then i tought of last s8ep1 tyrion... sad.. :(
And episode 2 and 3 in season 8
3 years later...still waiting.
22:35 he is part of the reasons the show is so succesfull...part of the reasons!! more like all of the reasons .
" I wanna a faithful adaptation of the books."
"That's what we want too..."
Oof.
@Anjelica Snorcket yes!! One of my favorite reveals from book 3. I was so disappointed that it wasn't in the show.
This dude....man he's too good for this world
Fuck, I remember when Game of Thrones had good dialogue. These seasons are even more painful to watch after seeing these clips
He basically gathered all the greatest perspectives and knowledge on the humanities topics, mainly on history and literature, and created a legendary medieval world.
Lol he asked them "who is Jon snows mother?" they looked at him all smug like and said "it doesn't matter, none of the storylines matter" next thing they got the gig.
as a student of anthropology I would really like to talk about history, with Mr. George
Ok he was a big well known author before the show but he can't deny that DD multiplied his fame all over the world and now he is producing prequels which he had never done before, at my knowledge, perhaps after seeing the success of DD for the last 10 years. I have been a reader of his many books starting from 1995 and admire GRRM but D&D deserves appreciation also.
THANK you DD for making it possible for such a great visual arts at the least.
Thanks to D&D for bringing this to the screen. But No thanks for their terrible handling of the last season.
Dumb and Dumber also completly butchered the later seasons...
He crafted an intriguing world of characters and a career for which he doesn't have to slave away for someone else, every day, 9 through 5, till retirement. Chapeau Mr Martin!
