I had three mechanics try and locate the leak in my car over the last year and they couldnt find it. Today I fixed it myself after watching this video. It was caked with mud and leaves behind the wheel well. A thousand Thank You's for making this video! No more frustration and worry about mold and rotting floorboards 😊
ive owned my civic for 11 years and am just now starting to get a water leak on the passenger floor board. i routinely clear out pine needles from the cowl, but i never would have guessed that they were filtering through the grate. much less thought that they were the cause for such a common problem. thanks for the tip! one tip for you though, if you start getting a leak through the roof, start by checking the antennae cover plate. i am actually replacing mine with a solid plate that replaces the antennae altogether ... found it on rock auto!!
very helpful video! took my car to a mechanic and couldn’t find the leak and drain my hvac instead and found this video and follow what you did. did a pressure wash test and did a carwash and no more leaks! thank you so much
Thank you, this is exactly what I needed for my old Honda that leaks onto the passenger side floorboards every winter. Very clear, and thanks for explaining where all the drains go. I had not even thought about the lack of drainage leading to my foggy window problem in the winter.
This makes so much sense. After a long rain, if i make a tight turn, water floods in from under the floorboards coming from the passenger foot area. With the cold weather coming in, the heat doesn’t just evaporate the moisture anymore so every morning i’m having to defog my windows with a towel lol. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for your help Dan. My wife's 98 Civic had this problem today. It didn't take much debris plus a lot of rain to cause a flood in the car. I had to use a wet/dry vac to suck out over a gallon of water from the floorboards. I did make one small modification to Honda's design. I added a bit of aluminum flashing to prevent water from dripping into the air intake so that if this happens again, I won't get the water inside the car. This also explains an earlier problem I had with a bad engine computer several years ago. The water ran in and rusted it. I could see the damage, but had no idea where the water came from. Mystery solved.
This is exactly what was wrong with my 99 civic ex today thank god I found the leak it's in the heater box right there and the seal was rotted out so now I gotta seal it and it'll be fixed finally ! This video helped a lot thankyou
Thank you, I have been looking for why my 99 Accord has been leaking and found nothing, it did not occur to me it might be through the heating ducts. I live near a bunch of pine trees so this makes perfect sense, you saved me a bunch of time and money replacing a bunch of weatherstripping.
Be gentle when checking the tubes for clogs, you definitely don’t want to damage them, I would suggest trying to test them using low pressure water first.
I have the same problem right now with my 93 Honda Civic coup . Water leaks right from where you point it out. Definitely gonna clean all that because I see I have small tree branches there
This was really helpful to us! We will know after the next rainstorm for sure but we think we have found and fixed our persistent problem! Thank you for your help!
@Wailingmongi two additional places that are common to cause leaks are the door weather stripping molds (inspect the weather stripping for damage and clear out any built up debris) another thing I’ve come across is damage/cracks on the frame welds (Check any weld seems in the area where the leak is accruing) these can be difficult to see but I have actual shared videos of sealing these welds. ruclips.net/video/Ya7RpaqLQfs/видео.html
@@TweekerDan1984 the car has the original molds and gasket so i really think that could be because of that. Though isn't easy to find all the brand new parts at decent price here in Europe. Anyway thank you man 😉

If this doesn't help you and theres no mud and stuff inside of the wiper area take out the carpet where your pedals are located. You will find a little rubber pipeline that runs through the body of your car on the ground of the car on the left side of your seat (driver side). This pipeline has a rubber plug that makes sure no water comes through the hole right where your pedals und fuses are on the left hand corner. The plug was loose in my eg hatchback. If the plug is loose water drains in even if the car's wiper area is clean ;) Might help you. Tried to explain it best I could I'm german.

I’m curious you see how passenger side drips water or gets wet but where does it leak into the car on drivers side? Or is there just a channel the water runs down to the drivers side from passenger side of firewall or dash?
Yes there is a long channel that will allow water to flow to the passenger and driver side drains. If the channel gets full of debris the water will build up and usually overflow into the heater area on the passenger side or sometimes the water may overflow dripping water onto the fuse block causing all kinds of finicky issues throughout the car. Please let me know if this did not answer your question and I will try again. 👍
I think I have the same problem with my 2004 Honda Civic. However I have a hard time removing that plastic cover, because it is different from what you show in the video. Do you have nay advice of how to remove it? Thank you in advance.
+Daniela Georgieva the cover will still have similar plastic clips and screws. You most likely will have to disconnect your wiper fluid hoses. If you unscrew and create a good opening near the wheel as shown in the video you may be able to spray a garden hose into the drain from the topside without removing the upper valance panel. Spraying the hose down through the drains may help any debris flow out of the drains as long as you create a large enough space for the debris to exit.
Hey man is this my problem in my 2000 coupe? I park where the front is faced downhill a bit and front floor gets soaked anytime it rains. If I park the opposite way the water will be sitting in the backseat floor. I can’t tell where it’s coming from. I was thinking the top of the car where the gutters are but have no idea.
These drains could cause water in the front and rear of the car. The other common culprits are the real taillights, trunk weatherstripping and then possibly damaged door weatherstripping. Do you know if you have water in the trunk where the stair tire is located?
@TweekerDan1984 Okay, so I have a '97 honda civic that has a floor leak. But I noticed that water only gets in when I drive in the rain. Also, I took the carpet off but there wasn't any hole anywhere. Any idea where the water could be coming from?
+Marky Mark Did you try pulling the upper panel off and clearing the water channels? Have you been able to tell the general area of where the water is coming from? Like possibly from the heater box or window weather stripping?
I would recommend checking the weatherstripping for damage or debi build up within the rubber seal. Do you have a sunroof? If that is not the case then I would consider pulling off the upper valance panel to clear out any debris from the drain channels.
Well done thank you. While you are there you may want to renew the caulk at the seams and by the hood hinge. You can google service bulletin Reference Number: 92-050 for a diagram of the area. The service bulletin is for this similar type of leak for 92-97 civic. "SYMPTOM A water leak into the footwell from under the left or right comer of the dash. PROBABLE CAUSE Not enough sealer on the cowl side of the panel -to-bulkhead seam. CORRECTIVE ACTION Apply sealer to the seams where the side panel joins the bulkhead."
Are you 100% sure that the front floor boards and trunk have no water? It is common for these two areas to overflow into the rear floorboards. If those two area are dry your weatherstripping around the doors may be loose or failing.
Hopefully I am able to point you in the right direction. I would check the front floor boards. There is a chance the water is coming in from the front of the car through the drains. If there is debris in the track under the front window or in the those side drain channels it wouldn’t take much for water to back flow into the car while parked facing uphill. You could try parking the car downhill to help with your issue until you have time to address the leak.
I took the plastic vent off and sealed everything was fine all year till I stormed like crazy last night and water was near my ecu again!?!? Plz help I paid like 280 last year because of this

The local auto part store has a wide variety of clips in stock.
What sealant to use on the cowl assembly if you don't mind me asking?
Weather stripping adhesive works well, or you can go with a good silicone adhesive from your local hardware store.
Thanks for the answer and where would I add the sealant to? On the edge of the valence or near the front side where the water goes down on?

I would recommend checking the weatherstripping for damage or debi build up within the rubber seal. Do you have a sunroof? If that is not the case then I would consider pulling off the upper valance panel to clear out any debris from the drain channels.
thanks

Well done thank you. While you are there you may want to renew the caulk at the seams and by the hood hinge. You can google service bulletin Reference Number: 92-050 for a diagram of the area. The service bulletin is for this similar type of leak for 92-97 civic. "SYMPTOM A water leak into the footwell from under the left or right comer of the dash. PROBABLE CAUSE Not enough sealer on the cowl side of the panel -to-bulkhead seam. CORRECTIVE ACTION Apply sealer to the seams where the side panel joins the bulkhead."
Thank you for sharing 👍
Come by and fix my car . Are you in Florida?
My 2006 honda civic back floor is soaking both sides, any ideas on how to fix it ?
Are you 100% sure that the front floor boards and trunk have no water? It is common for these two areas to overflow into the rear floorboards. If those two area are dry your weatherstripping around the doors may be loose or failing.
TweekerDan1984 im not 100%as car us always on a hill and haven't taken the front seats out, where could it be coming from? Cheers
Which end of your car is facing up the hill?
TweekerDan1984 tlthe front is going uphill
Hopefully I am able to point you in the right direction. I would check the front floor boards. There is a chance the water is coming in from the front of the car through the drains. If there is debris in the track under the front window or in the those side drain channels it wouldn’t take much for water to back flow into the car while parked facing uphill. You could try parking the car downhill to help with your issue until you have time to address the leak.
