I think that we'd all appreciate an update on how this fix is working out (now that it's almost a year later). Is the weather stripping adhesive still holding and sealing out the water after the winter cold and the heat of the summer???
No leaks as expected, and this car ia still my daily driver. EDPM holds up very well under extreme temperatures, the main reason I chose it for this application.
@@1D10CRACY That's great to hear! Clearly your method is superior to gunking it up with silicone sealant, as your way the two parts can easily be take apart and put back together after the fix.
I too am having an issue with water on the passenger side and plan to do this fix. After looking at the "seal" (as everyone calls it) on my low mileage car, mine looks to be in great condition and complete all the way around the opening. What I am seeing is that the "seal" looks to be nothing more than a foam material that reminds me of what you'd use in between your home windows if you were putting a window air conditioner unit in a window opening. After testing the area with a water bottle, the water easily penetrates the "seal" and goes down the vent and into the cabin by the upper right hand corner of the passenger foot well. Tell me that this isn't the factory seal / engineering design! If so, then that's nuts!!! What's your thoughts???

Imma try this, i fixed my driver's sde leak frm sunroof! Thks for vid and up date!
Same problem
This is The First Video in RUclips history that actually is informative and 500% helpful. Thank You
Wow, you're way behind. Like this comment🤣🤣🤣
Would have been very helpful if showed HOW he did it
I have to thank you for this video! Water on my 99 Lincoln Town Car's floorboards was driving me crazy- & mold was forming on the door sills! No mechanic would take on the job to define the problem; I thank God for your info- no more water leaks & taking it to the detail shop tomorrow to get everything dried up & cleaned up! You're in my will- hope you don't mind the debt! :)
Keep helping people man. You don't know how much it means to us brother. So much love to you. Thank you!!!!!!!!
And here I was, blaming my kids for spilling drinks on my floor. But I woke up this morning with water inside my car, on the pool passenger side again. Definitely going to fix it now. Thank you!!
Same here😂. Now I know! Thanks for the informative video.
Apologize to them kids
I know this is a old video, but I just bought a old car that the floor was getting wet,and I had no clue why. This was very informative and helpful. I just took it apart and there was all kinds of leaves etc in there. So thank you...I wasn't sure what was going on til I saw this video.
I was losing my mind on why my 2000 Town Car was leaking. This video solved the problem. Thanks for sharing!
Oh my goodness you have no clue how extremely thankful I am for you posting this video!!!!! You literally just lifted so much stress off of my shoulders and out of my mind! Thank you bunches
Thanks for this video, I'm doing this right now, I managed to find the exact product at Canadian Tire. UPDATE: I'm done, a tip is to make sure to press down hard on the area by the windshield when tightening those two rear screws. I didn't push down and tested and some water leaked in, but I pressed down and re-tightened and then it is leak free. Cheers!
Wow once again RUclipsrs like you give me hope for a quick fix. I was thinking windshield or door leak. Tomorrow i will investigate
You are my savior. You have no idea how long I have wondered about that same suspect seal from my Dodge Nitro. The car gets soaked front passenger and back too. This is the ultimate solution. I needed this confirmation that it's that seal
This year my passenger side floor has been growing a wet spot and it was driving me crazy. I was thinking heater core leak or somehow water was penetrating from underneath from wet roads. But none of those made any sense as I didn't smell coolant and the wet spot grew when I wasn't driving the car. I was about to rip out the carpet before I decided to see what the YT community had on the issue. This post looks like exactly what I am experiencing now. This was Grandma's 1996 Mercury Sable that she barely drove. Once the rain stops (so I don't melt) I will disassemble my cowling and see if this too is my problem. Thanks!
This fix was informative and right to the point!! Most DIY videos are wordy and take forever to get the point...not this one!! Great video!!! Two thumbs up!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Home Depot has these seals in various widths and styles. In the weatherstripping area.
Hey I have an o5 mercury grand marquis, low miles, set alot when my dad owed it, had same problem with water in floorboard on passenger side, came across this video, great content, really helpful, don't know what I would do without RUclips, if you have a problem, RUclips to the rescue, thanks for the help, video was right on.
You deserve a medal for this, thank you
If you're having a problem with this in an f150. Check your 3rd brake light that's on top of your cab. I have a 2004 F150 Lariat. The gasket there became loose and water traveled all the way down to the front passengers side. Take off the plastic peice that's right before the door. There are wires there and that is where water comes in.
One note about doors leaking... I had a weird leak in the passenger footwell. My drain holes were fine, there's even cavity wax evident. What caused my problems is the foam sound insulation (actually to be correct, it is in fact a vapor barrier based on the same principles as roofing vapor barier) that is behind the door trim panel. That stuff which is usually glued with awfully sticky black butyl rubber. If that butyl doesn't stick anymore, your feet will be wet.
Thanks very much for not only showing the problem you had, but also for suggesting a few other possible causes of the problem!
This is great information. I recently purchased a 2000 Lincoln Town Car (42,000miles) and noticed the floor mats were soaking wet after it rained the day before. I took the car to Goodyear and they advised me to take it a body repair shop. That led me to do some homework and your youtube video zeroed in on the problem with a simple fix. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Patrick Nedrick How did you dry the carpet out? Mine had about a half inch of water and I can’t dry it out. Any suggestions?
Geoff Barlow shop vacs do miracles too
Omg thank you...i finally understand why i can hear water sloshing underneath my car whenever i start the car or turn into a side road. It has actually caused a massive erosion on the metal under the passenger side.
Question: How do i remove the water that is trapped underneath my car?
There should be drain holes. Yours might be clogged. Look up your vehicle drain hole locations
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. I was shocked to see how much water had accumulated in the rear seat foot area. I have a 2009 Town Car. The fix was simple. Drying out the carpet and foam underneath is proving to be a challenge.
Don Corrigan try the high powered vacuums at a car wash. Drag them super slow across the carpet.
How did u fixed it
@@SonnyGTA that's what I have been doing lately, my car otherwise gets super stinky
Having fixed a quite large herd of Town Cars, Crown Vics and Marquis from early '90's through 2006, I will add just a couple things to this fix advice. I always used 1/4 or 3/8 inch diameter 'windshield' tape, this is the butyl rubber compound that holds the windshields in back then. It comes in a round 'rope' and is available at NAPA if they are still around and if they're gone, any auto glass should have some. You will need about two feet of it.
The primary problem is the foam gasket that is OEM disintegrates with time, and since I lived in Florida the 'with time' could be less than a year with the heat. Disassemble as per the vid, but instead of using more foam tape, use the butyl windshield tape. Be careful but you just clean the mating surfaces completely, using solvent of alcohol to remove the old foam rubber adhesive and the dirt and grime. 'Be careful' means most of those exposed metal edges are very VERY sharp. Install the new butyl seal on the black plastic part, carefully following the outline where the old foam tape was. Carefully install the plastic plate and gently press it down to get a good seal between the plastic plate and the metal cowl top. Once that is in place, reinstall the other parts as shown.
Wed carpet. Town Cars have very thick rubber insulation made on to the carpet. Remove your rubber floor mats and leave 'em out until the carpet is completely dry along with the insulation under it. If you the time, space and ability, the best way to dry the carpet is remove the right front seat and rear seat cushion, remove the plastic kick panel and the plastic sill plate front and rear doors, fold the carpet back over the center as much as you can, prop it up and put a couple fans to blow air over the exposed bottoms of the carpet. This can literally take a couple days. If you have not the ability to do this carpet fold back trick, leave your rubber floor mats out for the two and more weeks it will take for the carpet to dry.
This same trick works with Crown Vic and Marquis, difference is their carpet insulation is nowhere near as thick. Also, sign where you worked, I used date and what looks like 'FAN' . Anytime I was in anywhere I had to remove anything, door panel, IP, seats, carpets, anything, I signed and dated it. Sorry, I moved east 12 years ago so you will find nothing with 'FAN' and a date since then.
Thanks for the Advice. Im gonna try this. Sounds better than gasket sealer silicone
@@TomTom-pg3db I also sign everything I did, with date. 99% of my work was warranty, back when Ford still paid good for warranty by their book. I signed it and dated it where the signature could not be seen unless one was actually exactly where I did the work. I did this for years and actually won a bet from a service manager at Davidson Ford when he said there was no way I had the IP out and back in a Ranger in the time I punched in. I bet him I'd pull the IP out, put it on the floor pad, then reinstall it in less time than the first gig, but he had to pay me for the first R&R and double time for the second R&R. He said OK, I did it in less time by about fifteen minutes and he stayed true to his word. After he agreed to pay the double second book time, I told him to forget it, it was fun to beat the clock in front of him. Neither he nor any other SM questioned me after that deal.
I also signed in Russian: ГАИ, State Automobile Inspectorate initials, GAI. For today's time, you would use 'ДПС', DPS. They changed names few years ago.

Thanks for that great info .
ps
What is an IP?
You can find just about anything on RUclips and I'm having this exact problem. Very helpful advice thanks
I'm having this same problem on my 02 Taurus
i’m having the same problem with my 2005 Honda Civic! very frustrating so i’m glad i found this video! thanks 😊
Did you have the same problem as this video? Having a problem with my civic 2005 as well.
me too
Thank you! It was driving me nuts trying to figure out where the water was coming from! Ever since Hurricane Irma I've noticed that after strong rainstorms, everything was perfectly dry in my car's left passenger side - except for the floor on that one side where there was always a puddle!
were you able to fix the leak? What did you find?
It's amazing how many different vehicles have this problem. 2001 Suburban
Chris Monita 2007 Tahoe too!
Chris Monita 03 rav4
I finally figure it out! Who ever installed my audio left a whole leading into cabin with a huge wire going through it. The water was going right into my car and under my carpet!! Finally! Now to buy new carpet because I totally ripped it out looking for the leak.
Awesome job solving, reverse engineering and reengineering the solution to this problem!
Thanks man. Your idea to use weather stripping was perfect. I did not want to use that goop stuff to create a seal. Town car is fixed and dry.
Nice work!! I have to redo mine on my Ford Escape. However, if you check all these things and they all look good, if you have a sunroof, don't forget to check the drains for the sunroof. Mine were plugged, and both sides 5:39 were wet. So I just took a long piece of trimmer string and ran it down through the two holes in front. All better!
Lol I bypassed the heater core.... And recently was surprised after a carwash the passenger side mat was flooded again... This was a great vid 👍🏼
You saved my car! Like 7 months ago I got a Honda Civic 2002 and not long ago I noticed my passenger floor side was wet and I had in mind that I might have had cracked the floor panel when I hit a bump but now I know what’s the issue I will definitely take care of this on my day of thanks a lot!!
Did this fix the issue with your civic? My 05 has the same issue.
I had water in the same spot on my Chevy Colorado, but the culprit was my High Mount Tail Light seal. The water come in there, and that the front of the truck is lower than the back, the water would make it's way to the front of the cab. I replaced the light and the seal. No more wet floors.
Our 2014 Subaru Forester had a wet passenger floor. I discovered the AC drain hose was clogged. Took 5 minutes to fix by blowing air into the drain hose with my air compressor at about 100 psi. Can be done from under the vehicle or by peeling back the carpet.
Couple of reasons for this, ac drain-off plugged, your window will fog up if that's the case, poor design on cabin filter allowing water in during rain (which is this video), and heater cores.
Just did repair, it worked!!!! Thank you Sir.
This is the best explanation and fix on the internet for this problem!! Thank you!!
Very helpful. I've got a 2000 Ram that just started doing the same thing this summer rain or shine. Now I know where to start looking. Thanks!
I'm having this same problem right now. Thanks for being so thorough with this information. I'll get someone to check this section out.
THANK GOD FOR RUclips 😍 I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT'S GOING TO GET FIXED BY THE HUBBY!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.
I think you have given me new hope with this issue. I'll have to try it out! I have other things to address first, but now I think I can get rid of the wet carpet (for years, on and off)!
Most people get rid of their cars within 5 to 10 years!
It’s a good thing some people are starting to realize it’s better to keep the old ones around as long as possible!!
Thank you for the video. Had this issue for years and kinda suspected that being the tha area of the problem. But didnt remove all the parts. Just started parking it in the garage.
I JUST purchased a 99 as well. SAME thing. Damn....I hate doing work like this...I always run into problems. But I liked your video very much. I have leaks on the back floors as well....I removed the black plastic caps on the bottoms of the doors...there was dirt packed in there. I guess I will have to do this to that box.
I've got the same problem.
I'm gonna try this and hope the problem will be fixed.
Thank you for the update
Kind regards
Thank you for the video, it’s been raining here in Cali like crazy and I’m starting to find a soaked floorboards on my Lincoln specially in the back pax side, I’ll definitely try the tomorrow first thing 👍🏽
I had a seriously wet floor in the rear passenger side of my car (Honda Accord). There was no indication whee the leak was coming from but by studiously masking off parts of the car with painters tape and plastic wrap I finally traced the problem to the sunroof.
It looks like one of the drains in the sunroof going through the rear panels to an outlet near the wheels is clogged or defective. I'm not going to go to the expense of fixing it as I never open the sunroof to the air. Instead I will simply seal it with black silicone compound.
Awesome video! I Have the same problem on the drivers side. I want so bad to take off, but concerned I may not put it together properly. Thank you.
I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that is about perfect except for this issue. I am pretty sure you have helped me find the solution. Big Thanks!!
Excellent Detail: I have a similar issue with the LEXUS LX 570 truck. After replacing the windshield, I thought it was a windshield seal that needed to be done correctly. The replaced Windshield with OEM. STILL, it was a leak on the passenger side. Remove the COWL Cover.
It was a fu(kiiig Air intake seal under the Cowl cover it. Water passed through the metal air intake housing wall as the rubber seal was terrible. It really made me spin. How were 130K cars poorly designed for the significant and essential components?
Thanks for showing exactly how to check and fix the problem
This video saved me alot of time and money I never thought the reason I was taking in water would be this but it was cheers
Hi.
Thank you for the helpful tips and video.
Question.....how did you drain the water out of the container at the fresh air duct?
Thank you again. Have a great day.
I have brought my car to the dealer twice to have my Camry serviced on this issue . There has to be some sort of recalls on some cars . I owned several cars in the past and I never had this issue until I bought a car recently. The issue didn’t get solved completely. If I have to go to auto zone constantly for this . I need another car. You probably mean well on the video however it’s a little more complicated than your explanation
I'm sure different cars are more or less complicated. :) This was a town car and really was just as easy as it looks in the video. It also solved the water problem and I never had another issue with it
I have a 2012 Jetta Sports-wagon, Both my passenger floor and the back seat floor behind it get soaking wet. Also the inside of my car fogs up. There was a puddle in my trunk where the spare tire is but I drained it. Someone claimed my weather strip was missing from my trunk but it’s not.. I will check out this method, hope this is it.
Did you figure out problem??
Thank you for your video, I have the same leak on my passenger front and rear sets, I will buy the same seal and check the front…. Verry helpful thx
This 100% was the issue on my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis 👍
I had the same problem but I found a much easier fix. Basically, I sucked out the blockage with my shop-vac. Here's how; I took a dollar store funnel and glued the funnel's wide-end to a short piece of 2" PVC pipe.
I then duct-taped that PVC pipe to the end of my shop-vac and, using a short piece of 1" plastic tubing, I connected the funnel to the AC drainage port (located underneath my 2021 Equinox) and sucked out the blockage along with a quart of backed up water to boot.
That cleared everything out and water is now flowing normally. Please feel free to share widely.
Kindest Regards, Omar 🙂
Thank you, I have the same leak problem. Your method is the best method.
My 05 mdx has this issue.... it rains heavy here in Oregon and I didn't see the issue and literally had like small cloves or something growing..... now it takes like 5 solid towels to soak up the water....
Thank you so much I happen to have the exact same problem. Leaking on passages side n seals are all new.
Thank you so much. I thought it was the heater core leaking. Now I have something else to look at.
I have the same problem, in my 2007 town car. It will be parked for several weeks, and the rain will come and behind the front passenger seat will be water standing in the floor. thanks for the info.
Seems most car have this problem.. Great video Sir..
Thanks for this helpful video! I have a similar situation in my 99 Camry, passenger side is wet after rain. Any suggestions for a 1999 Camry as to how to find the leak area?
Very good information. I am having the same problem on a Chrysler Town & Country. I have not tried the fix yet but this looks like it might be the issue. Much appreciated video
this happens to the UK Vauxhall Corsa vehicles and like you stated the Vents and drain sites block up with leaves and debris twigs dirt and the rainwater back flows under the floor Wells. happened to me till I spent a couple of hours scraping the Vents drains and any areas dirty clean
Thank you for the video. I also have a 1999 LTC and have the same problem. I took apart the front trim and my seal is also gone so, I used your like and ordered the seal from amazon. Thanks again!
Thank you sir. I really like people like you take your time and video and show us how to fix the problem thank you once again
Home Depot sells that white gasket you are using
Had problem with rainwater leaking out on rightside rearpassenger seat floor...NO water in engineroom/battery area tough..! Audi a6 2.4 2004 model
Excellent! I have a similar problem and that's my project for this weekend
My son has a 2005 mercury sable premier soft top with sunroof
Flooding every time it rains & we noticed underneath has a rusted out hole as a result.
Does this video apply to his type of car?
I really liked your video...recommended a quality product+ easy to follow even for an old lady like me with no experience....I had the water problem & just cleaned my drain flap area which was full of leaves...if I need to go further, I'll be trying this next :-)
Terry Brown terry you had me at FLAP.🍆🍑
Thanks for the vid man this give me an idea of why my truck is also leaking but on driver side carpet, im still not sure it it is indeed that seal or maybe its the window rubber part will check both but this really helped me alot in narrowing it down. Also I had paid a shop to clean the drain since he said it was clogged but this rainy season proved wrong so it must be one or both of the things.
Im having the same issue with my BMW i had a pool in the back passengerand fron passenger area , thank you for the info
Cool. Hope this will help my 04 Colorado. Wet wet wet ..
thanks man! will try to do check my car tomorrow. i thought its an AC issue and thinking about spending money. thanks to you :)
I once had a Nissan Pathfinder that I bought for cheap. The owner didn't mention the clanging noise when you turn on the heater fan and the wet passenger side floorboard. I popped off the grill and there was a rust hole where there was a pocket where water could pool. Rust had fallen into the blower motor. I siliconed a piece of plastic over it. I wonder how long that guy had been driving around with water pouring in, for something that took me 15 minutes to fix.
Great video! I suspect my 2006 Honda Accord is having the exact same issue. Thanks.
I think mines is clogged because the blower is not working and water is just leaking out ……how do you clean out the debris?
Thank You a Ton !!!!! What about Mercedes-Benz windshiel cowling ??
Mines a 07 C230 Sport .
That's not what is causing my pax side floor to flood. Rain is coming in higher up in my car. It's not from the sunroof, as the entire ceiling is dry, but the metal frame that holds the windshield has rainwater running down inside of them and draining some into the floor. It is also making the interior material on the frame wet (to the point that it drips a bit of water).
Paid $200 today to have my carpet shopvac'd and to have the mold killed. The cause has not yet been found.
My 2005 Honda Civic Ex is having the same problem, thanks for the informative video.
I have a toyota aygo 2008 and i have a lot of water at the back right seats, maybe this fix helps or is it only if i get leak at the front seats?( i have check the most commons problems of leaks)
This seems to happen about the time a car is 16 +/- years old. I don't know WHY it's not part of the maintenance schedule. This happened to me and I paid a couple hundred dollars to have someone do this. I would have preferred to take care of it BEFORE there was water all over my car floor. About a year later it happened in the back seat because the drain holes in the door were clogged. Again, water all over the floor. Sometimes it's DAYS before you realize you have water in your car and your car starts to smell/mold. It could have all been easily prevented if only this was common knowledge!!
I’ve done this in cars that are 5 years old.
It’s not related to the cars age, it depends on where you park it and where you live.
What kind of shop work on this problem? Please let me know.
Is that EPDM Seal fit all trucks and cars?
How did you dry out the wet floor mats given they are a sponge type product and hold the water. Leak sorted, but drying things out is tricky.
Great video nicely done. How’s the seal holding up now? Did you do anything to dry the drivers floor?
It never leaked again. I've since sold the car. As far as the floor, I dried it best I could with a wet/vac.
Liquid gasket sealer . Put a bead on the between the windshield and plastic. Done. 7 dollars 6 minutes .
Might work, but the gasket has been holding up very well and I would consider it a permanent fix.
How would I fix when the water is appearing in to the back seat behind the driver’s sear only?
I’m female 72 and can’t afford expensive mechanical work.
This is good compared to what I had to do. My car had a rusted hole to the rear of the front tire. After a while salt got through the hole and rusted through the firewall, partially. So I had patch all the holes. I used: window screen, tarp, Dynaflex 230, Dynaflex Ultra. Now, there is a tiny leak left which I am going to stop.
Thank you so much! Your video is extremely helpful and you know how to explain everything clearly! Keep it up!!
Thank you for this well-informed video. This is extremely helpful ! I will be subscribing !
Is it possible for it to reach the passenger back floor as well? Only happens when i am driving
What about the drivers side? Can this be done on that side as well?
Hey How can you identify that this is indeed the source of the problem without disassembling the parts of the drain?
It was a hunch. :D
Did you remove a wiper arm?
