good video. My MKV was plagued with the same issue. had to remove the whole headliner to find the source. the drain hose adhesive for the coupling had melted over time on top of the fact that the nipple was clogged. had it replaced and cut the nipple a bit to allow water to flow more free as per a VW tsb for earlier models. Headliner removal is a pain in the ass.

I saw a Touareg and watched mostly to confirm that it was the access leak as I suspected. Super common, although I've seen all of these leaks.
if you have a $500 one and can't get the headliner out, I just put tape (normally painters, masking) over the hatch for a while. It might eat the paint, it might fall off, but it leaks less until it can be taken care of.

I have a mk5 GLI and I've had my car at a local VW dealership and was charged $50 per drain x4 drains.

On Golf MkV and maybe later there are two vents either side of the rear bumper. They are to relieve cabin pressure when the airbags deploy. If the vents are cracked water will leak in to the car. I had the issue after an accident repair and the shop left the vent cracked. My rear seats got wet when we had very heavy rain and big puddles.

On my 2010 Tiguan, the water pooling up in the spare wheel well came from the bolts attaching the bumper cover to the body. Water was flowing into the body through those bolts and draining into the trunk when it rained.

For anyone with an 2007-2014 Audi TT Mk2 Roadster, there are two drip trays that should be inspected periodically. They are located directly below the left and right convertible top mechanism, where the roof flaps are situated. From these drip trays are large 3/4" diameter drain tubes that channel water from the drip trays, through the center bulkhead, and out of the bottom of the car. The tubes are located in-board of the drip trays.
Any debris which collects in the drip trays may block the drain tubes resulting in water over flowing the trays and into the vehicle. As they are rather difficult to get to to inspect (since the roof mechanism blocks access) open the top about half way, set your smartphone to video, and place it down into the drip tray upside down so the camera is on the bottom (Note - be sure it's dry down there first!) With the cameras facing towards the center of the vehicle you'll get a good views of the bottom of the drip tray and the opening to the drain tube. If there's anything in the drip tray you can use a telescopic gripper or a 1" tube taped to a vacuum hose to get the bits out of the tray.
Another potential problem with the Roadster drain tubes is if the car has had the low pressure fuel pump replaced (located behind the drivers seat) or if anyone has worked on the speakers in the rear seat panel. It's quite easy to accidentally knocked the drain hose loose from the bottom of the bulkhead. If this happens water will drain into the vehicle. The problem in this case isn't just a wet carpet, but water can pool around the top of the fuel tank and corrode the wires. The rear seat bulkhead panel comes off easily enough and the drain tube is located directly behind the large speaker opening.
One of the worse cases I've seen is where someone forgot they placed a bottle in the convertible top stowage area. At some point it slid down the side and into the bottom of the drip tray. When the top was fully opened, the mechanism crushed the bottle into the tray which not only shattered the bottle, but broke a large hole through the bottom of the drip tray. In order to replace the drip tray, the entire convertible top assembly had to be removed and reinstalled.
So for Audi TT Mk2 Roadster owners, If the carpet behind the seats is wet or damp, check the convertible top drain drip trays and drain hoses.
    Cheers from Switzerland! :-)

Thanks for the video. On my mk7 I'm seeing water coming down the sunshade cover front pas side as well as the side handle. Drains are not clogged. All I can see is that the rubber edge that meets the body of the car is sunk right at the corner which creates an opening. I would have thought that opening would not come back to the inner side of the car but I guess that's probably what's happening. Any recommendations?

Hello. I have VW Tiguan 2010. I have a major issue with a roof leak. I dropped the headliner and I repaired the hose and cleaned the drains front and back. Just when I thought my nightmare is over, I tested the roof of any leaks prior to re installing the headliner back to its place, the roof started now from the small white tube surrounding the sunroof frame. Do you have any idea how to tackle this issue?

My 06 V8 Touareg had a leak one day where the water dripped from around the sunroof dial/upper console area and directly onto the air suspension controls(which was another problem in itself). It was a rainy day but it hasn't happened since and it's been through multiple car washes and rainy days even worse than the one it leaked on. Now, the day it leaked, I had the sunroof tilted for about half an hour in the rain and then closed it when I parked it. The next morning the entire center console was wet. My question is, do you think its the nipples(hehe) clogging up that would cause it to leak like that or was it from me driving through the rain with the sunroof tilted up?

This past late December in California when we were beginning the first phase of our never-ending atmospheric river, I had water just pouring into my 2011 GTI. I called my long term mechanic...and found he had retired. In desperation, I found one available mechanic, and took my car in. "Water leaks?" He said. "Join the party," pointing to the cars stacked up in his lot of all makes and sizes.
$750 later, he fixed several leak sources (sunroof, antenna, doors, bumper vents). I threw kitty litter all over the car and vacuumed it up every couple of days. I still have a slight leak in one door, but it's all much better.
Turns out, leaving your car out in the hot sun for years will do a number on your seals, and parking it under a pollen-filled walnut tree will clog up all your drains.

I have an 08 Touareg that had an issue with the A/C vent drain clogging which caused water to build up in the system and dump into the front passenger footwell. It was so bad that at one point about 1-2 liters of water dumped out in one go when I cleaned out the vent in the footwell and then it would be a contestant stream of water when driving. Had to fight tooth and nail to get them to cover this under warranty but then had the same issue less than a year later at which point I was beyond warranty and they told me the car had been flooded and I had to now replace all the corroded wiring in the floor boards. Needless to say due to this experience my wife will no longer buy a VW and I now drive 90 minutes to the next VW dealer for my purchases and warranty work.

I went thru tons of water ingress issues on my mk7. The speaker seals on the front doors were leaking and resealing them with silicon was the fix. The drain tube for the hatch handle/logo failed and was bringing water into the trunk. The seal on the pressure vent or flaps located in the trunk near the taillights failed and was bring water into the trunk.

I have been battling water leaks on both of my VW's for quite some time. One is a 2007 Jetta and the other is a 2007 City Golf. Neither of them have sunroofs. I have the drains under the cowl cleared regularly and the air intake for the heating system taken apart, cleaned and use silicone to help the seal when put back together. None of this has stopped the water from coming in. I just can't seem to find the entry location on either car. The floors will get up to an inch of water over night if it rains which I then have to use a wet vac to remove it all. I've done the garden hose flooding method...can't find it. Any other ideas as to what to try and where to look? I'm quite ready to sell them both and be done with them. Mold is certainly a problem.

My last leaky VW was an Mk1 jetta back in the day (rusty floor).
But this week my super trusty Jetta Mk5 was literally flooded both on the driver side and on the spare tire well.
I have cleaned the cowl, the front sunroof nipples (driver side was actually clogged with dirt) and, after taking out what seem to be several liters of water, I think I have managed the front leak.

My 2017 golf sportsvan rear sunroof drains were clogged, trunk flooded.
There's also gaps or metal pockets with no drains that water collects. Under the rear seats.
    Watch out for that.
Used a spray bottle attachment part to suck the water out.
Fix: Rear rubber nipple was found at each rear corner of the rear bumper.
No need to remove wheel covers.
Vw has a special tool for cleaning which method is entering from the nipple ends to the drain port.
I just used clothes wire with a plastic cover and smoothed the end.
Didn't do the front as access is non existing without removing wipers and other plastic stuff.

How was the leak fixed? Was it the clogged rear drains? You mentioned the shocks and rubber covers caused the leak; black flex caulk coverings left and right?

Really? My 2017 GTI is my first leaky car ever, and there are tons of complaints about leaky VW/Audi vehicles on the internet. German cars are nice pieces of engineering but also complete crap. If only German engineers spent as much time and energy focusing on durability as they do on cheating on emissions. Japanese cars are like Swiss watches compared to German cars. I

These damn useless vehicles are designed to break. I had this problem on a Q5 where the water from the windshield creeped inside the ECU compartment and corroded the wiring harness and ECU. The damn TCU 12+V wire was corroded along with other ones. Couldn't shift and start. Had to wire it up. Stupid vehicles. I have a 25 year old Toyota with very little issues. Sold the damn thing.

Just had the water leak issue with a brand spanking new 2021 Tiguan. After months of "fixes" that did nothing VW finally gave us a new 2022 Tiguan. My advice on how to avoid water in your vehicle. Don't buy a VW.
