Yes, bears are hibernating in the winter. I discussed that at the end of the video. I'm still curious about the possibility of seeing bears at this time of year. Has anyone had a bear encounter in winter? UPDATE: Unfortunately there was a bear attack in Haines over the weekend. Try not to wake them up! www.cnn.com/2021/02/09/us/coast-guard-rescue-skier-mauled-bear/index.html

Born and raised in Palmer Alaska. I have only heard of one bear sighting in the winter. It was January of 2018. It was about 45°F most of the month, when normally it is about -30 to + 10. It's Alaska, just carry a large caliber handgun or ?? when ever you are out and about! Gald you came back to Alaska!

There isn’t food for bears at this time of year...except for garbage. Maybe a male woke up early....but usually they stay hidden.

The content king! Love your chill vlogs man. Giving me hope to travel this year! Fun fact there was a court case just finished that challenged the law that required people to get permits to film in national parks. IT IS NO LONGER ILLEGAL!! So spread the word. One of my favorite youtube travel vloggers (kara and nate) got a huge fine last year for making videos in national parks without a permit. Those days are over!! Safe travels mr Canada.

A flume is an artificial construction that directs water, usually for mining purposes. In the summer you would see that it is not a railroad track but a wooden construction (like an exposed pipe) through which water can flow.

Pretty walk. Glad you showed a bit more of town at the end. Also you said it was 25 degrees F there and it was cold, but I did not think it sounded that cold. So I looked it up, do you know Buffalo NY is colder than Juneau in the winter? So it's not that cold in Juneau. Close to the ocean I guess, which warms it a bit.

    • @warreneckels4945
      @warreneckels4945 3 года назад +1

Exactly. Juneau is on the Pacific Ocean so its average high in February is somewhere in the mid-30s. 21 F by day is relatively cold by Juneau standards.
They pay for being close to the Pacific Ocean by persistent cloudiness, frequent precipitation and cool summers (60s F by day, 50 F by night.). They don't get the break from clouds that Seattle does during the summer.
Now, if Gabriel were to show up in Fairbanks, he would learn what real cold is, by American standards.

Many animals once thought to hibernate, including bears, really only enter a lighter sleep-state called torpor. Like hibernation, torpor is a survival tactic used by animals to survive the winter months, and is triggered by colder temperatures and decreased food availability. Torpor also involves decreased breathing and heart rates, and lower metabolic rate. A bear’s body temperature reduces slightly. Bears can sleep more than 100 days without eating, drinking, or passing waste!
The main difference between hibernation and torpor is during torpor, the animal is able to wake up quickly to avoid danger, or if the opportunity exists exit the den to feed. Waking expends energy and involves violent shaking and muscle contractions, much like shivering. The energy lost is offset by how much energy is saved in the torpid state. Females bears awaken from torpor to give birth.

Alaska is a place where people who live near there can travel. I would be surprised if many Europeans would go to Alaska when they can go to the Alps or Scandinavia to experience winter breaks. I remember a New Zealander who mentioned that he wouldn’t go to Iceland to see volcanoes when there is plenty in his own country to view. Plus costs of travelling to Alaska from Europe would be more expensive. Alaska seems to be more for the North American consumer. Discuss. 🧐

Yep: layer the gloves & have a pair of mitts tucked into some inside stash pockets. I recently learned to put the down layer near the inside to keep it dry. I was surprised that the layer of down against my arm was dry, and the sleeves of the outside down parka were pretty wet. I like those hem-pit, pass-through jacket vents because I can tuck my entire hands easily to the inside of the jacket. I tuck water & dry mitts & batteries in there so they do not get too cold. Maybe the vloggers suffer less wildlife attacks due to them speaking to we fans. Saw a lady get attacked by a squirrel the other day: tore into her pretty good...lol.

If you put one hand in the bear's mouth and tickle it under the chin with the other hand, the bear gets very confused.

At least you could go into the wood with a dog, so that if a bear comes up you throw the dog at him and while he's chewing the dog you have time to run away LOL

The Inuits gave me a tip to catch a bear.
Dig an ice hole and circle it with dried peas.
    Hide a short distance away.
When the bear comes for a pea you kick it in the ice hole.

Be aware of the bear. Be bare aware. Got it. I think I’ll bring a pot and spoon with me the next time I hike in the woods. It gets tiring repeating “Hey there, Bear 🐻, coming through.” Ha! Yeah, I thought they all hibernated. Juneau - dead vs. kinda dead! Ha! Beautiful though.
