About the bear situation here in winter. Although I've worked in national parks in Alaska and Canada before and seen lots of bears in the wild, that was always in summer. So I wasn't sure what the likelihood was of seeing bears in the winter when they're hibernating. As much as I've figured out since I've been here, it's far less likely than in summer, but it can still happen. Unfortunately there was a bear attack on a skier near Haines, Alaska just a few days ago. Apparently they had somehow woken the bear up from hibernating. Luckily the man survived but got some pretty bad injuries. Here's a story about it: www.cnn.com/2021/02/09/us/coast-guard-rescue-skier-mauled-bear/index.html And a local Juneau resident commented under another video of mine that he usually sees a bear once or twice each winter. So they can still be out and about, but much less likely that you will see them. If you have any further info or tips when it comes to bears, feel free to comment below.
Thanks for sharing this video Gabe! I've always wanted to go up to Alaska, especially to places like Juneau or Denali National Park. I'm working in Yellowstone National Park for the winter season and the bears are hibernating during winter of course, but there is always the possibility they could come out of hibernation if there is an elk or bison carcass around they could pick up the sent. I am always thinking of bears when I'm out hiking or cross country skiing in the wilderness. So I do often still carry bear spray on me so I'm told it can also work on other animals such as bison, elk or even cougars.
wow.. I guess being in backcountry like the skiing was there is always a chance to come close to a Bear den.. I'm sure you don't have much to worry on trails close to town. I can certainly understand being on your mind as I have been in Grizzley country and it is certainly a different feeling and you are aways on the look out......
@@samantha1877 Yeah you're right but I am a lone wolf and I have done many solo hikes while in bear country. I always make a point though to carry bear spray and I also carry a whistle and clap and make noise in case there may be a bear in the area.
We can tell you have great conditioning because you can hike, hold the camera and talk without running out breath. I'm watching from a wheelchair; in a way you're my legs and eyes. Hopefully one day technology will help me smell and feel a little of the experience too. Thanks for what you do!
Gabe, this is one of the best places/videos I've watched from you. Just the sheer beauty, no people, nice trail, cool history signs, blue skies. Wishing I was there walking with you!
This just hit me, this is why you are in such good shape, all the hiking on trails and lots of walking. Good job, keep it up especially on mountainous regions like this. Walking is one of the best things for you to keep in shape especially when you hit middle age.
Wearing a light windshell over a skin tight wool/synthetic base layer is probably you're best bet to help with your body temperature flucuations. But at the end of the day it's always better to be a little chilly than hot and sweaty when your're in freezing temps! Loving the videos!

I flew into Juneau for eight days, two summers ago, and did all the hikes that you did, Gabriel, but wondered how things look in the dead of winter. Thanks for taking me back . . . and in the middle of winter! Breathtaking.

Hi Gabe. Watching this from Australia where it's late summer. It's almost 30C today about 86F. Man can you hike ! 12 miles in the heat here would be too much for me . I would go through litres of water. Then need a cold beer. I would like some snow for a change . But not at -30C or whatever it is there. I'd love to visit Alaska when this awful Covid pandemic is over. We have no bear problem here. Unless you are scared of Koala Bears.🐻
Gabriel, you are a brave soul!! I really enjoy watching your excursions whilst I am currently sitting in 67 degrees on the Gulf Coast. Don't get me wrong I would love to be out that way but **it happens!
Wow! I just hiked there, it’s one of my favorites. I got back there in the woods(Silverbow basin) and it started to snow and it was so relaxing. That’s the creek that started the gold rush to Alaska.
Beautiful hike on a beautiful trail. You have discovered the secret of wintertime hiking in calm winds - don't overdress and keep walking to stay warm and comfy.
Wow Gabriel! I got a workout just watching you! 😀😎👍🙌 nice and peaceful, what a calming effect listening to the water! Beautiful! Thank you and be safe! 😊❤🙏
That balance of what to wear vs. comfort in freezing weather is always a challenge, can definitely relate. Even if I start off freezing, I tend to heat up and sweat pretty quickly inside the multiple layers, which then leads to me needing to take things off - which then causes me to quickly getting too cold when I stop or if wind picks up, due to the sweat taking in the cold. Socks and gloves is probably the most difficult to get right, and those thermal inners are often a case of do I/don't I? Props to those who get it right every time.
U really put your heart and soul, and legs, into this one. Much appreciated. Also, in addition to the beautiful natural scenery, I’m always impressed that such effort has been put into making the trails, signs and even bridges. Well done, Alaska and well done Gabe. 👍 👍
I grew up hiking those trails along with Mt Roberts, Douglas Is. and the glacier of course. Definitely some of the most breathtaking views you'll ever see. My favorite was Mt. Roberts after you get above the tree line.
Back in 1983 when I first lived in Juneau the entrance to the mine was accessible. I went way into the mine with a friend one day. There were boxes of old dynamite laying around dated 1944. It was a very dangerous place.
Too bad the mine was closed. It’s ok, I’m glad I got to see more of that hike. You do such a great job, I feel like I’m right there with you. If you ever decide to come to Michigan for some hiking, give me a call, and we’ll burn one. Thanks for all the memories, Gabe.
